Today's episode felt like a long time coming, but we're happy to finally welcome Eric Gregory of Gallaudet to D3 Glory Days. We started this episode with a conversation with head coach Byron Moore, getting his insights on what makes Gregory such a special competitor. Moore and Gregory have a unique opportunity in the track world to head to the startling together, as Moore will give Eric a hand signal when the starting gun fires. We also get into the nuts and bolts of coaching a bit, especially considering the length of Gregory's season as he pursues an Olympic Trials Qualifier after running 45.73 to win nationals. It was clear in our conversation with Gregory that he just loves racing track. Before attending Gallaudet, Eric had never left Louisiana, now three national championships later, he serves as a beacon of inspiration to the community he came from, along with the deaf community, for which is the 400m world record holder. We talk about Eric's willingness to take on a big training load to prepare for the triple at nationals this year, as well as what it's like to be a part of the deepest sprint field D3 has ever seen. Thanks to Eric, and Coach Moore for taking the time to sit down with us. Special thanks to the Gallaudet athletic department, and sign language interpreters who made this conversation possible. More runners are attempting to tackle the marathon distance each year. Whether it's a runners first marathon or 10th, one thing all runners have in common is that we want to do and feel our very best. One important variable to be able to do that is a structured, indivualized, and intentional marathon program. So, in this episode, run coach and Olympic Trials Qualifier, Jon Mott discusses how to build your perfect marathon program…Generally, what are some requirements to consider before even committing to the marathon distance How long is a normal training block for a marathon? What are some key workouts that are important for marathon runners to do during training, explain what makes these workouts important to focus on for the marathon distanceHow to periodize a perfect marathon program goals you focus on every few weeks, how many buildup weeks vs drop down weeks, training considerations within that block When should a plan hit peak mileage in a training cycle? When should a taper start and what should that look like?Do runners need to run 26 miles to run a marathon?Do runners need to run 20 miles to run a marathon? Coach and professional runner Jon Mott has been involved in running, whether it be coaching or competing, for the last 19 years. The journey throughout his whole running career has allowed him to gain all the knowledge and experience it takes to be a successful and well known coach. He has qualified for the Olympic Trials three times, placed top 20 in a World Major, and has won many marathons throughout his career. And the success he's had with his own running had transferred over to his coaching. That's when RunnersFix Coaching Services officially got started. Jon still competes to this day at a high level and will be racing in the Olympic Trials in Orlando this coming February. He also coaches over 100 runners. Riley Spitser was an All-Conference swimmer and multiple school record-holder at San Jose State University as well as a 2016 US Olympic Trials qualifier. After her four years of NCAA swimming, she didn't feel like she was done swimming, so she trained with a few other recent grads and a group of high schoolers at a local club team while working part-time jobs, making ends meet while chasing her athletic dreams. After a year of this, Spitser felt ready to move on from her lifelong pursuit of sport. Over time, she found other outlets to pursue in the creative field, namely singing and music. Her 2nd single, "A Shadowy Place" (Riley Rex on Spotify) was written during a time of anxiety and uncertainty. The track is out now with an accompanying Alice in Wodnerland-inspired video, filmed with the help of Riley's brother Jack (who happens to be SwimSwam's chief photographer).
Guest Michael Mannozzi joins the show! Michael is a 7-time Team USA Track & Field member, a 4-time Olympic Trials Qualifier (first for Youngstown) the 2020 Air Force Male Athlete of the Year and a 2010 Collegiate National Champion.

In Episode #50 of the More Than Miles Podcast, physical therapists Dr. Kate Mihevc Edwards and Dr. Kacy Seynders interview professional runner, mom, and owner of the coaching business, “Running Joyfully,” Kaitlin Goodman. Kaitlin is a 4-time Olympic Trials Qualifier, competing in the 5,000meters, 10,000 meters and marathon distances. In addition to competing at a professional level, Kaitlin has coached hundreds of runners to achieve their own running PRs and goals through her business “Running Joyfully.” Kaitlin is also Dr. Kacy's running coach! During the interview, Kaitlin talks about her early introductions to competitive running including running for her father at Davis Senior High school and how inspiring he has been as a positive influence on her career and mindset towards running. Kaitlin was originally drawn to running because of her father's coaching in the sport and passion for running, though she did also play other sports, such as soccer before focusing more on her running career. After high school, Kaitlin went on to compete for the University of California at Davis track and cross-country teams and shortly following that moved to San Francisco to pursue her professional running career. She went on to race multiple distances from the 5K and 10k races all the way up to the marathon and has found success at each of these distances. While talking about her running clearly lights her up during this conversation, Kaitlin is equally excited about her coaching business and helping others succeed in their running goals and journeys. Kaitlin also talks about some of the lessons that she has learned coming back (but not “making a comeback”) to running after her recent pregnancy and birth of her son.Dr. Kate also adds to the discussion with tips for those returning to running post-partum including having realistic expectations, the individual nature of how and when to get back to running, and ways to transition back to running safely. Check out the episode as these women share their combined wisdom! Kaitlin sincerely wants each of her runners to experience the joy that she has found in running as a lifetime activity and sporting pursuit. From her “Running Joyfully,” website, she states, “I'm the runner who finds the joy in every mile.” She also contributes immensely to how the runners she coaches relate to running and as Kacy can attest to, inspires this joy of running in many others! The interview also includes some of Kaitlin's tips on how to have a positive mindset and relationship with running and more!
Dr. Kate and Dr. Kacy interiview Dr. Amber Zimmerman, PhD., sleep researcher and elite runner. They talk all about Amber's approach to running and the "little things" that have turned in to big things. She is the 2022 Philadelphia Marathon winner and owner of PR's of 15:37 in the 5k and 2:31 in the marathon. In this conversation, Amber discusses everything from her research on the genetic contribution to sleep and physchiatric disorders to how slowing down on easy runs have helped her make leaps and bounds in her improvements as a runner. She emphasizes the importance of recovery, particularly sleep, for getting the most out of your training and the most out of your body. She uses her own research and science background to provide some key tips on how to improve your sleep quality and quantity. Amber already has her 2024 Olympic Trials Qualifier and is chasing the Olympic Standard for Paris. Her advice to runners seeking high performance: Don't talk yourself too seriously and eat the donuts.
We welcomed registered sports dietitian and two-time Olympic Trials Qualifier, Kelsey Beckmann Pontius, back to the podcast. In this episode Kelsey maps out a fueling blueprint for Boston that can also be used for any marathon. Nutrition is the one element of our training that we can control, so why not optimize it now?! Kelsey is the owner of Meteor Nutrition (www.meteornutrition.com) through which she provides nutrition services to runners of all levels. Kelsey grew up playing competitive soccer, and eventually ended her career as a D1 soccer player to become an elite distance runner. Her advice in this episode is golden. With less than two months to go until the Boston Marathon, now is a great time to map out a nutrition plan, and implement that plan during training runs to train your gut well before race day. Kelsey shares how and why training with fuel and racing with fuel are game changers for runners of all levels. In addition to her website, Kelsey can be found on Instagram at www.instagram.com/sportsdietitankelsey or on Facebook at @meteor nutrition. We are so thrilled to share Kelsey's knowledge and expertise with all of you. Please leave us a five star review on wherever you get your podcasts. This helps other listeners find us. Carmen Graves began distance running after becoming a 5 time All-American in the 800m at Roanoke College where she also played soccer. After college she decided to opted to pursue pro running. She found the 3k steeplechase which tested her endurance, speed, and athletic abilities. Like many elite runners, Carmen prioritizes her training outside of long work hours. She works in the non-profit sector as a Program Advisor for the Center of Work Education and Employment, coaches horizontal jumps at Englewood High School, and is the meet director for the Denver Twilight Mile. Despite a full schedule, she is training hard, competing regularly in bigger track events, and has her sights set on some big goals: making the US team in steeplechase and qualifying again for the Olympic Trials in 2024. Meet Neely Gracey, 4-time Olympic Trials Qualifier (12, 16, 20, 24), top American at the 2016 Boston Marathon, and the 11th American female EVER to break 70 minutes in the half marathon. Neely is fresh off her 9th place finish at CIM—this year's USATF Championship Race—where she rocked a sizzling 2:30:29 PR (5:43 per mile)! Neely opened up about not being able to run during her first pregnancy, losing her "identity" as a runner—going from one of the top distance runners in the country to "no one" for years, despite being sponsored and feeling a pressure to return to a high level. It was a rough phase from 2017-2020, but feels she is a better person on the other side—ultimately feeling that her body needed that break—and has completely reframed her relationship with running and her approach to training and racing. We discuss: -Reframing her identity and relationship with running -Evolving her approach and mindset to training and racing -The husband & wife coaching dynamic & partnership (complete with a funny story from the Indy Monumental 1/2M) -How coaching helps inspire her to keep chasing big goals as a runner, coach, and mother -Mantras: "You're right where you're meant to be" and "trust the process" -Her new book: Breakthrough Women's Running: Dream Big and Train Smart where she shares her experience from both an athlete and coach perspective to provide a road map for women runners who are chasing big goals Such big INPSO and so many great takeaways! Episode SummaryNeely Gracey is a three-time Olympic Trials Qualifier and Founder of the run coaching group, Get Running Coaching. Today, Neely joins the show to discuss racing strategies such as running the tangent, navigating water stops, and other tactics to consider. Neely shares her thoughts on running etiquette, how to settle into your comfort zone when you find yourself running alone, and what to do when things don't go as expected on race day.Episode SponsorRunner Click Pro – https://pro.runnerclick.com/Key Takeaways01:01 – Whitney Heins welcomes Neely Gracey back to the show to discuss her training and how the altitude has impacted her12:08 – Running the tangent and other race strategies18:19 – Running etiquette19:34 – Navigating water stops26:33 – Other tactics to consider prior to race day35:29 – Settling into your comfort zone when you find yourself running alone41:08 – Turning off the self-doubt and tuning out the excuses51:00 – What to do when things don't go according to your plan1:03:45 – Whitney thanks Neely for joining the show and lets listeners know where they can connect with herTweetable Quotes“So the tangents are something that you often see in the Elite race. In a major, for example, all the majors have a blue line, and that is the tangent. The blue line is where the measured course is. So, if you can run the blue line, you're gonna run 26.2. If you run off the blue line, you are not going to be taking the most efficient, measured route. And, therefore, you may run further.” (14:15) (Neely)“For my athletes, I always tell them to grab two cups at every stop. Every single water stop capitalize with two cups, because you know you're only getting an ounce or two out of each cup. So, over the course of a marathon, you're gonna need every single stop with two cups each to get in the appropriate amount of fluids that you need for that distance.” (21:07) (Neely)“In my book I actually have a whole chapter on breathing and how to run on effort by utilizing this strategy. So, it's you breathe in two steps and out two steps and that's one. So in two, out two, in two, out two. And I do this in every race that I run and every workout that I do. It really helps me stay really focused and engaged and get the most out of myself on the day.” (37:42) (Neely)“One of the things that you can do is utilize ‘you' instead of ‘I.' Research has suggested that we respond better when someone else tells us we can do it. So, when someone else cheers, ‘You got this' your brain is gonna register it better than if you're just saying, ‘Ok, I can do this. I can do this.' And so, if you talk to yourself as someone else - as a coach, for example - and you say ‘You can do hard things. You can get up this hill,' whatever it may be, that is going to be more effective.” (43:46) (Neely)“I was on a team with multiple Olympians. It was really, really special for me on that day. And, at the end of it, I realized it was because I was prepared mentally that if anything didn't go my way, it was still going to be ok. And I could only control myself, my attitude, and my approach to what was happening out there. And I feel like it made all the difference on that day. From that time forward, I've pretty much entered every race with that attitude of, ‘I can only control myself.'” (57:14) (Neely)Resources MentionedWhitney's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5The Mother Runners Club – https://www.themotherrunners.com/Neely's Twitter –

Myth Made Manifest Over 4000 years ago in ancient Sumer, some of the first mythographers inscribed the stories and myths of the Goddess Inanna on clay tablets in cuneiform. These incredible findings were unearthed, and the fragments were painstakingly pieced together and translated. What they discovered were the ways Inanna was heralded as a goddess who embodies polarities: impatient and deliberate, an attentive lover and fierce warrior, connected to fertility as well as death—making her an accessible, relatable, and inspiring representation of the Divine Feminine as she stands in her power and multidimensionality. The Way of Inanna: A Heroine's Guide to Living Unapologetically is a field guide to heart-centered living through the wisdom of the Sumerian Goddess of Love. Each chapter deconstructs sacred narratives in which the Goddess navigates the seven gates of her soul's journey from awakening to ascension. More than a simple retelling, the book is myth made manifest in which Inanna becomes a means to accessing our own ascension and alchemical magic within our modern, contemporary context. With a combined psychotherapeutic and spiritual approach, author Seana Zelazo offers rituals and practices to help readers connect directly with Inanna. From harnessing your sensual energy to reclaiming the generative capacity of the Divine Feminine and identifying and amplifying your life's purpose, you will discover the ways Inanna's process is your own. I'm joined by Steven Benedict, a professional track and field athlete and Olympic Trials Qualifier, to discuss his unique and inspiring story. There are over 400,000 children in the foster care system, and at just a few months old, Steven became part of that statistic. At eight years old, he and his younger brother were adopted by a supportive and loving family who encouraged him to try out every sport that sparked his interest. Though he was involved in all different after-school activities growing up, Steven felt naturally inclined and interested in track and field. Since then, he's done consistent work to build internal confidence and become a world-class athlete. In addition to competing in the Adidas Classic Diamond League and US Nationals, he ran for Nike for 2 years and was a Penn Relays Champion.Off the track, Steven is the founder of Empowering Movement, a coaching business that offers tailored programs to elite and up-and-coming athletes that utilizes his signature Performance Coaching Method. He's also the founder of a non-profit organization called Fostering Success, which pairs professional athletes with foster kids to create awareness, offer mentorship, and support ongoing opportunities for fostered and adopted children nationwide.Listen to today's episode to learn more about Steven's incredible story and how he's working to create sustainable change in the foster care system. In this episode, I interview two-time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier and author of “The Boy Behind the Door,” Emma Kertesz. She lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband Noah Droddy and their two elderly rescue dogs. Emma is a self-proclaimed “serious hobbyist” who trains with Boulder Underground and is coached by Evan Schwartz and Matt Hensley. When she's not running, working, or recording her podcast, you can find her taking a three-hour nap every Saturday after the long run.In our interview, she shares how she went through the painful process of redefining her relationship with distance running — and her identity — when she stepped back from the sport. We also discuss her book, “The Boy Behind the Door,” the role intergenerational trauma played (and still plays) in her life, her bipolar diagnosis and what helps her manage it (including lots of discussion around ketamine therapy), what the media tends to get wrong about bipolar, her creative process as a writer and podcaster, her Native American heritage, and so much more. As a professional track and field athlete and Olympic Trials Qualifier, Steven Benedict has run in some of the worlds most prestigious events. In addition to the Adidas Classic Diamond League and US Nationals, he ran for Nike for 2 years and was a Penn Relays Champion. Featured in 50 national and international magazines such as Train, ESPN Magazine, Mens Fitness, Mens Health and Fitness RX, Steven has expertise and contributions that extend. far beyond the track. These accomplishments were not what was expected based on his early years. Steven's childhood began in an abusive home which resulted in he and his brothers placement in foster care. Over the course of his first 8 years, he was moved between homes and motels with little certainty of what the next day would bring. At age 8, he and his brother were adopted by an incredible couple which possessed traits of joy, humility, sacrifice and unconditional love. The time with these parents would be short lived, however as both his mom and dad suffered untimely deaths within a few years of each other. The pain of these losses nearly ended Steven's professional career but as history would repeat itself, once again, Steven defied the odds and is back stronger than ever to be proof that experiences in life are nothing more than another day of training in becoming a champion for others. He is passionate to set the pace for the coming generations as an example of what relentless strength and faith can accomplish. https://fosteringsuccess.co/ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/whats-your-armor-with-steven-benedict/id1565606454 www.stevieyb.com
