He's done just about everything in the running industry—from professional runner and run specialty store owner to race director and Olympic-level coach.Ben spent nearly a decade as the head coach and executive director of NAZ Elite in Flagstaff, AZ, where he guided professional athletes to national titles, World Championship appearances, and an Olympic Trials Marathon victory. Now, as the Co-Founder & CEO of The Marathon Project, he's creating a world-class racing opportunity for athletes who are fast—but not necessarily pro. And if you're an everyday runner, you might also know him as the co-author of Run Like a Pro (Even If You're Slow), where he shares training principles anyone can apply to improve their running. In this conversation, we discuss why Ben felt the need to bring The Marathon Project back, what sets it apart from other races, and where he sees it going in the future. An entrepreneur at heart, Ben has been the mastermind behind some of running's most exciting projects, and we dive into the lessons he's learned from each venture.Connect with Ben:Instagram: @marathonprojWebsite: themarathonproject.comBook: Run Like a Pro (Even If You're Slow)Matt Fitzgerald's book about training with Ben/NAZ Elite: Running the DreamConnect with Carolyn:Instagram: @inspiredsolescast or @carolyn.c.coffinYou can help spread the running love! This episode features longtime professional runner, entrepreneur, mother of three, wife, and so much more, Stephanie Bruce. In this episode Bruce, who is 41, shares the purpose and passion that's driving her these days, as she moves into a new chapter in her running career. It's a time of transition and exciting new paths forward. As a professional runner in her early 40s, Bruce shares valuable experience and information about what it looks like to age as a elite athlete, and how she's processing it. She continues to explore what's possible as a professional athlete, and also how she's making that happen–how she's navigating the changes that come with getting older. Bruce has been racing professionally for over 15 years, and in that time she has accomplished so much as a runner, and she's not done yet. Some of her many career achievements include 10th at the New York City and London marathons; 6th at the Chicago Marathon; 12th at the Boston Marathon; 3 national championship titles–once in the half marathon, and two times in the 10k; 6th at the 2020 Olympic Trials Marathon–and the list goes on. But the significance of Bruce's pro career goes way beyond times and places. She's been very open about her running journey and how she's navigating living a full life outside of running, including having her three children–Hudson, Riley and Sophia–while continuing to show up year after year ready to perform at her best. Bruce is known for being a tough, smart, gritty racer and a powerful supporter of teammates, as well as other runners in the field. Last year, 2024, was a big transition year for Bruce: for the past decade, Bruce was a member of the HOKA Northern Arizona Elite team, also known as NAZ Elite. She learned part-way through 2024 that her contract wouldn't be renewed, and her time with the team would be over at the end of year. In addition, Bruce had her third child, at age 39, in September 2023, which meant that 2024 would be a postpartum return to full time training and racing. This is all to say, 2024 was a tumultuous year for Bruce. And she gets into it all in this episode. She also shares the pivotal experiences in her life that have played a huge part in shaping how she shows up for running and for life. Ben Rosario is a leading figure in distance running, known for his work with Northern Arizona Elite, The Marathon Project, and his book Run Like a Pro (Even If You're Slow). As the head coach of NAZ Elite, he developed one of the premier training groups in the U.S., coaching athletes like Aliphine Tuliamuk to a U.S. Olympic Trials win. With a passion for coaching and a knack for innovation, Ben has made a lasting impact on the sport.---

In December of 2024 Ben stepped away from his involvement with NAZ Elite to focus on the next iteration of The Marathon Project, a race that he co-founded and put on for the first time in December of 2020.In this episode—Ben's third appearance on the podcast—he and I talk about the return of The Marathon Project, his career as an entrepreneur in the running industry, running's third "boom," and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by: — Tracksmith, New Balance, Precision Fuel & Hydration, and Final Surge. Today's podcast will give you three tangible ways you can improve your mental performance in 2025. Body follows mind. Yet we as athletes rarely focus on (or know!) how we can improve our mental game. Luckily for you all today I have the privilege of sitting down with my good friend, Shannon MAPP, NCCP! If you're not familiar with Shannon, she's the mental performance counselor who works closely with NAU, NAZ Elite, UA Dark Sky Distance, and a plethora of top professional runners. As an athlete and a coach, Shannon has always been fascinated by the psychology of well-being and achievement. Her interest regarding the power of the mind to impact an athlete's performance and overall experience drove Shannon to complete an undergraduate degree in psychology, and then a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Through listening to this podcast episode, you'll walk about with three big practical tools on improving mental performance that you can directly apply today. You'd be a fool not to listen. Free wisdom that many people pay for. Tap into the Shannon Thompson Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! "The marathon is the longest event. You have to believe in yourself: 'I can do this.' It gets tough at the end. If you don't have that belief, if you don't believe in your training, it's going to get tough. It's just the mindset that, 'I can do this, but I need to be patient enough so that I can finish strong." Wesley Kiptoo of NAZ Elite sits down with us for a live interview ahead of the 2024 NYC Marathon. He shares about transitioning from college racing to the marathon, his reflections from his debut marathon, how he prepared for the NYC course, and his race plan for tomorrow. "I want to reach the goals that I know I'm capable of reaching. It's going to require me to do things I have not done in the past. I feel like I just kept doing the same thing over and over in the past where I'm just coming top three, top four, top five. Sometimes I was satisfied with that. But I think if you want to be a champion, you can't be satisfied with that." Ahmed Muhamed of NAZ Elite sits down with us for a live interview after winning the 2024 Abbott Dash To The Finish Line 5K in 13:38. The race kicks off on Sunday, November 3rd with the women's race starting at 8:35am E.T. and the men following at 9:05am E.T. (Don't forget to set your clock back an hour the night before!) "The pleasure of being a coach is you get to bear witness to the process of what goes on behind-the-scenes. The fans only get to see what people do for a performance, but you get to know what's actually going on, the ups and downs... It makes those great moments mean even more." NAZ Elite's Head Coach Jack Mullaney joins us live in New York to reflect on his first year with the team. Jack shares what he loves most about coaching, his philosophy, what the transition was like going from coaching at the college level to pro level, and what's ahead for the team. Meet Lauren Hagans, the 2024 Grandma's Marathon Champion, who made a sensational marathon debut, scorching a 2:25:55—running the fourth-fastest U.S. debut of all time! Though Lauren has coached many marathoners—and is surrounded by strong, NAZ Elite rockstar marathoning teammates who shared helpful nuggets—this was truly uncharted territory. "You never get to a starting line by yourself! Little pieces of magic were shared with me at moments of doubt along the way to my first marathon. They helped me develop trust." We discussed: -Her build—Lauren was concerned about pushing her mileage too high due to past injuries, so her coaches built her a plan that played to her strengths -Mentors/coaches who've had an impact—Todd Harbour at Baylor, Ben Rosario, Jenna Wrieden -Her most meaningful races—1:09:46 4th-place finish debut at the USATF Half Marathon Championships -Her perfectly executed Grandma's race plan and how awesome it was to share the joy with her coach Jenna at the finish line. -Her "stay in the fight" moment -And what's next Lauren has competed in 3 Olympic Trials on the track and is stoked to compete in the marathon trials in February. She is hoping to rock a fast half at Valencia before then. I'm looking forward to following more of her inspiring journey! *had some technical difficulties with this one so please bear with me. Ben Rosario is the Executive Director of the professional distance running team, NAZ Elite. Ben has literally done everything in and around the sport from an elite professional running himself, to coaching youth, founding NAZ Elite, coaching the pros, working with HOKA through this team for product development…all the way to the position he holds now. We had some technical difficulties during the recording of this episode but Ben is nonetheless full of gems for running and life! I find it fascinating that it seems like everywhere he has gone, including in grade school, he ends of leading and/or building something. Along this journey of life and sport Ben has done a beautiful job at living, learning and evolving to better himself and the people around him. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed kickin it with Ben!

Today's podcast is a short exploration into the world of mental performance and simple practical ways in which you can improve it to ultimately improve yourself as a runner and in every day life. We go through this exploration with the one and only Shannon Thompson MAPP, NCCP. Shannon is the mental performance counselor who works closely with NAU, NAZ Elite, UA Dark Sky Distance, and a plethora of top professional runners. In this conversation, Shannon goes deep on the benefits of focusing on mental performance, perspective, expectations, handling pre-race nerves/anxiety, and much more. I am 100% confident that you'll learn new things about mental performance by listening to this episode and be able to implement easy practices into your daily routine that will help you become a better runner and version of yourself. Through listening to this podcast episode, you'll walk about with practical tools on improving mental performance that you can directly apply today. On the podcast today is the one and only Jesse Williams. Jesse first came on my podcast almost two years ago (November 25, 2020) and since that first conversation, I've been incredibly fascinated with him and his ideas for our sport. If I could appoint a commissioner of track and field, it would be Jesse. Every few months it seems, Jesse is putting on another world-class meet. On December 1, the Fitness Bank Cross Champs will take place in Austin, Texas. Teams like the OAC, Brooks Beast, Tinman Elite, NAZ Elite, TaylorMade Elite, U.S. Army WCAP, and many more! Needless to say, this race is absolutely stacked and there are many storylines going into it. In today's episode, Jesse and I discuss the Fitness Banks Cross Champs, best ways to market our sport, running past celebrities, bold predications for NCAAs, and much more. It's always a pleasure to talk with Jesse and always a thoughtful conversation. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much we did! "In 2021, I had a really hard year of life and racing. Nothing seemed to go right, and I was desperate for answers. I feel like I trusted God, took a leap of faith and it's paid off big time." -Rory Linkletter After strengthening his faith, following his heart, and betting on himself, it paid huge dividends for Rory Linkletter in 2022. Rory set the Canadian half-marathon record at Houston in January, scorching a 61:08. Rory also competed gamely and ran 62:19 in the NYC Half, placing 10th in a stacked field. These and many other great results led to him being named to World Champs Oregon 2022 Team for Athletics Canada for the marathon, where he will have the great honor of competing for his country. On working with Ryan Hall: "Ryan has rewired my brain through his charisma, his wisdom, his faith. I couldn't have drawn up a better person to guide me through this transition in my career. In 7 months of working together, I couldn't have imagined someone working so quickly to change who I am as an athlete and as a person. Feels divine, super grateful it all worked out signing with Puma Running." Topics covered include: his coach & mentor, Ed Eyestone; online coaching with the Bruces (Steph & Ben); favorite races; Boston learnings; defining moments; Houston and breaking the Canadian record; mindset; his NAZ Elite experience; taking a leap of faith; Ryan Hall; exploring edges and reaching new limits; his respectful rivalry with Ben Flanagan; the lone wolf mentality; signing with Puma; drive, spirit, and the underdog mentality; deepening his faith; therapy; community service I'm stoked to continue following Rory's inspiring journey. This was such a fun chat with so many takeaways! I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! "There was an academy called the Transcend Running Academy. That's where I came through. It's sponsored by (2012 Boston Marathon champion) Wesley Korir. I was working out with Wesley when I was in Kenya during high school. He taught me most of the things about running. I didn't know I would make it in running but when he started talking to me about the benefits of going to school and continuing running, I started being serious in those two areas.” Wesley Kiptoo is the 2021 NCAA Indoor 5000m champion and put together a third and second-place finish at the last two NCAA cross country championships. He was a standout star at Iowa State but now it's time for a new chapter in his career. Wesley has decided to turn professional and sign with Hoka's NAZ Elite. He will be training under coach Ben Rosario and he will be making his debut tonight in the 5000m at the Mt. SAC Relays. While in college, Wesley shows fierce competitiveness by pushing the pace from the front. He earned himself personal bests of 13:14.74 for the 5K and 27:37 for the 10K. In this episode, you'll hear about his big goals as a pro but also a dive into his personal history with the sport. This signing is a dream come true as he hoped to be a pro runner while growing up in Kenya running and walking 40 kilometers to and from school most days. I hope you get to learn more about him and keep tabs on his future as a pro.
