The 2025 Boston Marathon promises an exciting blend of redemption stories, debut intrigue, and head-to-head rivalries across both elite fields. On the men's side, defending champion Sisay Lemma returns after last year's audacious front-running victory, facing off against 2024 Chicago champ John Korir, two-time Boston winner Evans Chebet, rising Kenyan Daniel Mateiko, and U.S. hopeful Conner Mantz. Other contenders include Lesotho's Tebello Ramakongoana and Americans Clayton Young and CJ Albertson, each hoping to outlast the pack or capitalize on race-day chaos. In the women's race, Hellen Obiri is chasing a rare three-peat in Boston, entering as the clear favorite despite a strong field. She'll be challenged by past podium finishers Amane Beriso and Sharon Lokedi, 2:16 marathoner Yalemzerf Yehualaw, and rising marathon star Irene Cheptai. The American field is led by Keira D'Amato in her Boston debut, Emma Bates returning to form, and Dakota Popehn riding Olympic momentum. Young talents like Gabi Rooker, Jessica McClain, and Jackie Gaughan round out a promising domestic squad, with veterans Des Linden and Sara Vaughn adding experience to the mix.Cooler temperatures, slight winds, and the Newton Hills promise another unpredictable Patriot's Day. Tactics, toughness, and timing will determine who claims the tape on Boylston.SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. Fueling & Nutrition for Young Runners: A Guide for Coaches & Parents with Michele Pettinger

Our diet and fueling habits are setting important examples for our kids. Are we doing it right? Joining me is coach Michele Pettinger. She's a Level 2 certified coach through the Road Runners' Club of America, a certified specialist in fitness nutrition through the ISSA, and she's the author of the new book The Young Runner's Guide to Nutrition. We discuss how young runners should be fueling and approaching nutrition (which during the teen years is a formative time period). It's critical we get the basics of sound nutrition habits right early so that we can set kids up for success. We also chat about practical strategies for families and coaches, the impact of puberty on our nutritional needs, simple ways to make optimal fueling easy, and why Michele thinks my tradition of bringing my kids to McDonald's after a hike in the mountains is just fine. As a dad, this topic is really important to me. I've been around young runners and unfortunately, disordered eating is not rare. Hopefully this conversation will help you navigate food, nutrition, and fueling in a more thoughtful way with the young people in your life. You can also download a bonus episode with Registered Dietitian Anne Mauney on fueling / diet Q&A here. Thank you Previnex! After resisting most supplements for the better part of my life, I'm cautiously changing my tune. I'm now a Masters runner and in my personal life, I'm optimizing for longevity. I want to be my healthiest self for as long as possible and I'm excited to partner with Previnex to make that happen. Previnex uses the most bioavailable, clinically tested ingredients, the optimal form and dose of each ingredient, pharmaceutical grade manufacturing, testing of raw ingredients and finished products. For every purchase you make, they also donate vitamins to kids in need. Their new Muscle Health Plus is something I'm now taking. Turning 40 – and having a thin frame – has made me realize that I need to prioritize lean muscle mass to stay healthy and age well. Muscle Health Plus has creatine, essential and branched chain amino acids, and it's designed in a way to maximize protein synthesis and the absorption of amino acids. Muscle Health Plus will help you prevent muscle damage, which is particularly important for aging runners who want to protect themselves from muscle loss and recover faster after hard workouts. As is true for all of their products, Previnex adheres to the highest of standards: their ingredients are clinically proven to do what they say they're going to do. They're now offering international shipping so if you live in the UK, Canada, Australia, or anywhere around the world, you can try Previnex as well. Previnex offers a 30-day money back guarantee. If you don't feel the benefits of their product, you get your money back no questions asked. With their focus on quality and customer satisfaction, I hope you'll try it! No runner wants to get injured. But the worst part of an injury is often the mental side of it, not the physical! Sure, you can go to the PT or self-treat your injury. That will help you physically heal.  But what about your loss of identity when you can't run? What about the loss of a future goal? How will you respond to feeling like you lost your community? Perhaps more importantly, your mental outlook will affect how you treat your injury and the level of success of that treatment. We have to get this right! Joining me is mental skills coach and psychologist Carrie Jackson. She is the author of On Top of Your Game: Mental Skills to Maximize Your Athletic Performance and coauthor of Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries. She's worked with elite and pro runners around the world and her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Runner's World, and most other major media. We discuss: How to practice acceptance Fear management strategies How to adjust goals Why "recovery is training"  As a formerly injury-prone runner, this conversation really impacted me. I remember how each injury made me feel. And there's almost no worse feeling for a runner! It's one of the major reasons why my coaching practice and training programs all revolve around consistency and staying healthy so you can focus on your running. It's officially that time again: The spreadsheets are out and the ranking formulas are loaded. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia have returned with the kind of number crunching that would make a tax accountant blush.Yes — we're talking about The Ten, and more broadly, the increasingly anxiety-inducing state of the 10,000 meters heading into the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.Because apparently World Athletics took one look at the event and said, ‘What if we made this harder, more confusing, and fully dependent on vibes, shoe tech, and whether your country's federation knows how to read the rankings page?'So here we are. The women's standard dropped to a vicious 30:20.00. The men's remains at a world-class 27:00.00. And unless you're from Kenya or Ethiopia—or somehow running 10Ks on the road in super shoes fast enough to melt tarmac—you're probably counting on the whims of the World Rankings gods to punch your ticket to Tokyo. In the U.S., Weini Kelati is still the queen of consistency. Parker Valby and Karissa Schweizer skipped The Ten entirely. Elise Cranny has re-entered the picture and Jessica McClain quietly garnered some valuable points by PR'ing by half a minute. On the men's side, it's a little simpler: Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks, and Woody Kincaid are qualified. All they have to do is battle at USAs.There's still time. A 10K at Mt. SAC is coming. Maybe Pre will host a last-minute 10K.  So let's break down who's up, who's down, who's close and who's hoping UK Athletics doesn't screw them over again.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Preet Majithia | @preetmajithia on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. How I Built This: Bandit Running Co-Founder & CEO Nick West

In the fall of 2020, while much of the world was still stuck inside wondering when things might go back to normal, Tim West was lacing up his racing shoes, logging miles, and building something new – not a tech startup, not an app, but a running brand, out of his basement. He quickly recruited his brother Nick on his vision. They didn't spend money on big splashy ads or influencer campaigns. Instead, they listened, they ran, and they asked questions. They built gear starting with socks that runners actually wanted. Over the next few years, what started as a side project for the two brothers and their designer turned co-founder Ardith  Singh, grew into one of the most exciting new names in running: Bandit Running – a Brooklyn-based company that makes premium performance apparel and centers community at the heart of everything it does. But Nick West didn't come from the fashion world. Him and his brother Tim were working in e-commerce at Jet.com. They grew up immersed in the New Jersey skate and surf scene where the coolest brands weren't built in boardrooms. They were built by friends on the street and from the ground up. That ethos is what stuck with them.Today, Bandit makes everything from race day singlets to streetwear inspired track pants. They host events that pack the sidewalks of New York. They've launched the unsponsored project celebrating professional runners who don't get the financial support from the major shoe brands and they're building a brand-first model that doesn't just sell apparel; it tells stories. So how did a couple of brothers go from zero marketing budget to a brand that's evolving what running looks and feels like? That's what we find out in this episode. It's 10 a.m. in Brooklyn and Nick West is refreshing his phone again and again. We're sitting in the Bandit Running headquarters. The coffee's still hot, and the 2025 spring collection, nearly a year in the making, is officially live to the public. This drop: It's the result of 11 months of long days, late nights, and that's just how those days go.On a previous drop, there was even a 2:30 a.m. production shoot involving a whiteboard, an iPhone, and Nick himself modeling shorts that he didn't expect to be in. These are the kind of stories that don't make the product page on the website, but at Bandit, they're kind of the point because this isn't just an apparel company. In this episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast, Nick West joins me on how he and his team built Bandit Running, a company rooted in connection, performance, and that little bit of rebellion that every runner knows by heart. It's a brand built by runners, forerunners, driven by storytelling, community, and the belief that there's a better way to build a business in this space.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Nick West | @nicholas_west on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. “I also learned that I just love working with athletes who truly have that passion about seeing how good they can be. The outcome isn't as important to me as I thought. It's just, ‘Let's go see how good we can be and see where that lands us...' Stepping away from college and taking this really windy journey to where I am now, I've been able to work with all different levels of athletes and it's been equally rewarding to those who run their first mile without stopping all the way to the world stage. It's been a non-conventional path, but I've been loving it.”My guest for today's episode is someone who's seen—and shaped—American middle-distance running from just about every angle. Juli Benson was a 1996 Olympian in the 1500 meters, a world-class competitor in her own right, and now she's one of the most respected coaches in the sport.Over the past two decades, Juli's coaching journey has taken her from college programs like Georgetown, Air Force, and Penn to working with World Champions, Olympians, and emerging pros. She coached Jenny Simpson to her gold medal at the 2011 World Championships. She guided Kevin Sullivan back to the global stage. And today, she's the coach behind Nikki Hiltz, helping them chase a 2028 Olympic dream of their own.In this episode, we get into it all: – What makes Nikki tick and how their partnership is evolving – The differences between coaching NCAA athletes vs. pros – How Juli learned to balance intensity with recovery—the hard way – Her reflections on being a woman in the coaching world before there were many to look up to – And what it's like now to see coaches like Shalane Flanagan, Diljeet Taylor, and Laurie Henes rise to national prominenceWe also talk about Juli's time at Air Force, the unique challenges of coaching across every level of the sport, and what it's meant to mentor everyone from Olympic finalists to first-time runners. This is a conversation about resilience, evolution, and quiet excellence—and it's one of my favorite coaching deep-dives we've done yet.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Juli Benson | julibensontraining.comSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. We had dominance. We had Jakob Ingebrigtsen running off with two gold medals and made it look like a tempo run. We had Gudaf Tsegay breaking a championship record and redefined what a full send means. How I Built This: Ali On The Run Show's Ali Feller

Let's go back a couple of years. It's 2017 and Ali Feller is a writer, runner, self-described talker, and she's sitting in her living room in her house with a microphone, an idea, and a whole lot of enthusiasm. She doesn't have a fancy studio, a producer, and any guarantees that anyone is going to listen. What she does have is a belief that runners, pros, weekend warriors, and people chasing something big have stories that deserve to be told. So she starts talking, listening, and asking really good questions.Today, the Ali On The Run Show is the biggest running podcast in America. It's downloaded millions of times a year. It's where elite marathoners, Olympians, and everyday runners come to share their journeys – whether they're chasing gold medals, breaking barriers, or just figuring out how to balance running with the rest of their lives. At the center of it all, this endlessly curious, deeply passionate, and incredibly warm person has built not just a podcast, but a community. But Ali's story isn't just about the show and the podcast; it's about resilience. It's about saying yes, even when it's scary. It's about navigating Crohn's disease, pregnancy, motherhood, and most recently, a breast cancer diagnosis, all while showing up, microphone in hand, ready to tell the next great story. Through it all, she's been a race announcer, a marathoner, a friend to just about everyone in the running world, and somehow the nicest person in America. So how did she do it? How did Ali go from a kid who loved dancing to magazine editor to podcaster with sell-out live shows, an engaged audience, and a voice that runners turn to every single week? That's what we're going to find out today. I'm joined by my wife Kari Lynn to chat with Ali Feller on how she built the Ali On The Run Show into the biggest running podcast out there.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Kari Lynn Cotone-Chavez | @karilynncotone on InstagramGuest: Ali Feller | @aliontherun1 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. “The really great athletes – they all have a superpower. [It's about] what makes them uniquely excellent and helping them understand what their superpower is and how they wave that sword around…You may not have laser vision, but you can fly. How do you use your ability to fly and max that out?”In just two years, Will Palmer has overseen quite a bit of success for the Florida Gators distance program. In 2023, as the associate head coach for cross country and assistant track and field coach, Palmer led the Gators' women to their highest national ranking since 2009, an SEC championship, and a second place finish at the NCAA East Regionals. In addition to all of that, he and his wife Samantha were the coaches behind Parker Valby's record-breaking dominance, guiding her to NCAA titles, collegiate records, and her first Olympic team. Before arriving in Gainesville, Palmer made an impact at Alabama, helping the women's team to an SEC title and a podium finish at the NCAA Championships in 2022. His coaching career also includes stops at Georgetown, Western Kentucky, Iowa State, and Oklahoma, shaping some of the best distance programs in the country. So today we dive into the vision behind Florida's rise in cross country, what made Parker Valby's training and mindset so unique to be part of, his coaching philosophy, and what he's building in Gainesville – plus lessons from a career spent developing talent and much more.If you've been enjoying these office hours episodes, shoot me a message with other coaches that you'd like to hear from. Running gets harder as we get older. Being a master's runner makes it harder to focus on health, speed, and improvement.  But with a sound approach, we can thrive in our 40's, 50's, and beyond. Joining us is Coach Michael McGrane, who has been in the running industry for more than 40 years. Currently the head coach of the Norwich University Cross Country team, he's won "Coach of the Year" awards, holds a 2:30 marathon PR, and is currently training for his 24th Boston Marathon. We're going to discuss the physical and psychological changes that have to occur as Master's runners if we want to stay healthy and keep running well. Michael is pulling insights from his long personal running career, his work as a college cross country and track coach, as well as his prior experience coaching with the Boston Athletics Association. If you're a runner in their 40's or beyond, get proven training programs that prioritize your health and strength here. Use code jason15 for 15% off your first order at Previnex! Thanks to Ketone-IQ! Ketone-IQ increases the levels of ketones in your blood – and raised blood ketone levels do increase focus and alertness, which is why I take a shot before every podcast recording and have for almost two years even before their sponsorship. I feel dialed in and quick for these high-stakes conversations. There's also promising research – and loads of anecdotal evidence – that ketone supplementation can help with recovery if taken post-exercise. I know some of the best ultra runners in the world, Boston Marathon champ Des Linden, and the pro cycling team that won the TdF in 2022 and 2023 all take ketones post-race to aid recovery. Go to Ketone.com/strengthrunning to save 30% on your first subscription and receive a free 6-pack of Ketone-IQ and try for yourself today. Thank you DrinkLMNT! A big thanks to DrinkLMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at DrinkLMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best.  DrinkLMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. If you're not familiar, LMNT is my favorite way to hydrate. They make electrolytes for athletes and low-carb folks with no Sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. I'm now in the habit of giving away boxes of LMNT at group runs around Denver and Boulder and everyone loves this stuff. Boost your performance and your recovery with LMNT. “My mentality is if I'm going through that high mileage and adding that stress in, I don't want to also have to worry about workouts and putting my body in a hole where I can't recover for a week or two down the road. I think that's very different than how a lot of other people approach training, but for me it's been working.”For the first time in over 30 years, an American man has won the Los Angeles Marathon. On Sunday, Matt Richtman stamped his name in the history books, breaking the tape in 2:07:56—a massive personal best and a statement win in only his second marathon. The 25-year-old ASICS athlete didn't just claim victory; he dominated, pulling away from a world-class field with a decisive move that turned the streets of LA into his own personal proving ground. The performance did have so many people scratching their heads thinking: “Who?” I am here to answer all of those questions.Today, we sit down with Matt to break it all down:– The moment he knew he could win—and the fearless move that sealed it– Why he had no set plan going in but let instinct take over– What's next after a 2:07 breakthrough in just his second marathon– Why his training on Strava doesn't make sense but maybe after he explains it - it makes a bit more sense– Why he's got a traditional and old-school approach to training– And how it feels to be part of the next generation pushing U.S. marathoning forwardThis episode is for anyone who loves the thrill of a bold race and the promise of what's to come.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Matthew Richtman | @richtman13 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. "I think that it has gotten to a point where we've taken the racing out of racing. We've taken the sport and turned it into something else. Track is about racing. You have eight athletes on the track for a reason. You award a champion or award a winner of the race for a reason: because they outperformed everyone else. And that's not easy. That's one of my fears: that people will start to think that it's easy, because the winner is not really being highlighted for having won. They're being highlighted for having run a personal best. Ultimately, if you're not careful, you end up with this deconstructed competition where it's not about the athletes in the race… We're very excited about what we're bringing...I can't wait. That's what you want. One of the things that's funny to me is when I see people in the track world on social media talking about fantasy matchups. It's like: We have the real fantasy over here. It's real. It's not fantasy. It's actually happening."The countdown is on. We are just one month away from the launch of Grand Slam Track, a bold new league that promises to shake up the sport of track and field—and today, we're talking to the man behind it all, Michael Johnson. We've done multiple episodes with MJ as a four-time Olympic champion, world record holder and one of the most respected voices in the sport. If you haven't listened to those, I suggest you go back and do so. Our 2022 CITIUS MAG Live at Worlds interview with him is one of the best big picture conversations we've done on the state of the sport. Johnson has spent years analyzing what's missing in professional track. His solution? A structured, high-stakes, athlete-driven competition that puts rivalries, personalities, and pure racing at the forefront. With 48 signed Racers, a multi-platform media deal, and a $30 million investment, Grand Slam Track is designed to change how the sport operates, creating a true professional league that's built to last.Today, we dive into:How the league is strategically structuring itself to maximize the talent track What success really looks like in Year 1 from a business standpointInside the TV deal and how it came togetherThe lessons from other sports (even WWE) that can help track engage more fansAnd more on what to expect when the first meet kicks off in KingstonMichael Johnson isn't here to wait for change—he's making it happen. Picture this: you are a marathon runner – but not just any marathon runner. You've got a personal best under 2:45. You're a Stanford grad with a background in computer science and design. Instead of heading off to business school, you decide to start a company – one that's rethinking human metabolism from the ground up. That is the story of Michael Brandt. He's the CEO and co-founder of Ketone-IQ, a company pioneering the future of metabolic health. Their flagship product, Ketone-IQ isn't just a supplement – it's an entirely new category of fuel. In just a few short years, it's taken off. It gained traction with elite athletes, high powered execs, and even the U.S. Department of Defense, which awarded the company – then known as HVMN – a $6 million contract to study how ketones can optimize soldier performance. But Michael's story isn't just about biochemistry and business strategy; it's about thinking differently about seeing opportunity where others see obstacles. It's about choosing to put yourself out there even when it feels uncomfortable and about the unexpected connection between running a business and running a marathon, from testing the limits of human performance to building a multi-million dollar company. In a brand new category, Michael Brandt is a founder who's always running fast and thinking ahead with Ketone-IQ.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Michael Brandt | @michaeldbrandt on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. “You can't be someone who shies away from sticking your neck out. I tell our guys: ‘We are trying to win.' I'll say it publicly. I will say it to anybody. Maybe that puts pressure on us. But life is pressure. Athletics is practice for life. You need to figure out how to handle pressure, how to handle stress, how to handle others' expectations, your own expectations, and manage it”.We continue with our office hours episodes as I sit down with Coach Dave Smith, one of the most accomplished coaches in NCAA cross country history and the architect behind Oklahoma State's dominance. Since taking the helm in Stillwater, Coach Smith has built a powerhouse program leading Oklahoma State to four NCAA men's cross country titles and a Big 12 record of 13 conference championships. He guided the Cowboys to a historic team performance at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championship, scoring just 49 points, the third lowest winning total since 2000.Coach Smith's accolades don't stop there. He's a four-time National Coach of the Year, a Team USA coach on the world stage, and a leader of a program that has consistently produced NCAA champions, All-Americans, and world-class athletes like German Fernandez, Taylor Roe, Alex Maier, and Sinclaire Johnson. In today's episode, we dive into his journey from athlete to coach, how he's cultivated a championship driven environment at Oklahoma State, what's next for his program, his athletes, and his take on the future of distance running in the NCAA and beyond.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Dave Smith | @coach_dave_smith on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. On today's show, we have a lot to talk about. Josh Hoey just ran 1:43.24 for 800 meters—indoors. That's the second-fastest time ever run indoors, behind only Wilson Kipketer. We'll break down what this means for the American 800m scene, how he's addressed skepticism that inevitably comes with a performance like this and whether Hoey is suddenly a legitimate outdoor medal contender.Hobbs Kessler doubled at USAs, taking both the 3000m and 1500m titles like it was just another weekend at the track. We'll talk about what impressed us the most about Kessler's double, how the men's middle distances are shaping up for 2025 and why it was OK for Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker to skip out.And then there's the "rivalry" that was quickly dispelled by the athletes – Nikki Hiltz vs. Shelby Houlihan. Just a few years ago, Houlihan was untouchable. Then came the four-year ban, and now, she's back—and already battling for the top spot. In the 3000m, Houlihan got to the front, squeezed the pace, and dared anyone to come with her. And Nikki Hiltz? They came with her. And then passed her. In the final strides of the women's 3000m, Hiltz outkicked Houlihan, officially stamping themselves as America's best championship racer in the middle distances.Plus, we'll get into the results of the sprints and why the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing might be one of the weirdest global meets we've ever seen—between withdrawals, travel logistics, and a US team that's missing some of its biggest stars.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Sinclaire has proven time and time again that she belongs among the best–not just in the United States, but also in the world. But the road hasn't always been easy. 2024 was a year of highs and lows for her: a two-second personal best and a stunning 3:56 at the Olympic Trials final, but also a 4th place finish that left her just outside of the team for Paris. Adding in her two injuries that disrupted both her Trials buildup and her postseason, it's been a year of recalibrating. It's also been a year of reassessing and figuring out what comes next.In this episode, we get into the emotional rollercoaster of the Trials, her decision to leave the Union Athletics Club, why she's taking full control of her training under the guidance of her fiancé, Craig Nowak. We also talk about what she's learned from years of navigating injuries, her new approach to staying healthy, and how she's setting herself up for success in 2025, starting with this weekend's U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Sinclaire Johnson | @sinclairejohnson on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. BeRad, the podcast is BACK and has a new take. Carson and I got burned out with how we were structuring podcasts and wanted to offer a different take on our lives. One day, I was looking through our numbers. It struck me that the episodes Carson and I recorded together were some of the most listened-to episodes, second only to those we recorded with universal stars like Laird Hamilton and Des Linden. They were some of my favorites to record, too. On this first episode or the 36th, depending on how you look at it, is our 2024 in review, with some fun life updates and in-depth looks at what went wrong and what went right at my races last year. “People asked me if I was shocked crossing the line. To be honest, I didn't feel like the shock set in yet when I crossed the line because I thought I could run 3:48 or 3:49. I was really excited, but I don't feel like I was as shocked as other people. It was afterwards when someone told me I was number eight on the world all-time list. That's when I was like, ‘Wow.'”My guest for today's episode isGary Martin, a fan favorite here at CITIUS MAG since his high school days. Now he's a junior at the University of Virginia. Gary just delivered one of the fastest miles in NCAA history at the prestigious Millrose Games, running an incredible 3:48.82 – a performance that shattered his own school record and puts him at No. 2 on the all-time collegiate list and No. 8 on the world all-time indoor list. What makes this even more impressive is that he was the only collegiate runner in such a stacked field of pros and ran a very well-executed race surging through the field from being last at halfway to finishing 5th overall. Today we're diving into what this performance means for his season, his mindset going into that historic race, and how he's approaching the upcoming championship stretch. Plus, we talk about the evolution of his career at UVA and the rapid rise of collegiate milers pushing the 1500m and the mile to new limits.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Gary Martin |@gary.martin20 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. Nick Thompson is the CEO of The Atlantic, the famous American magazine and digital publisher founded in 1857. Before that, Nick was an Editor at both Wired and The New Yorker, developing a reputation for his great reporting, unique perspectives, and impactful stories across a range of subject matter.     In addition to his amazing professional career, Nick has also been a committed runner for life, a talented marathon runner, who is now dabbling in trail and ultrarunning. Back in 2021, Nick set an age group American record for 50k running 3:04, famously at the same time that Des Linden broke the Women's world record at the distance. Now, Nick is experimenting with trail and ultra running, doing a few 50 milers and a 100k, with at least some curiosity about the 100 mile distance. I've been a massive admirer of Nick's for a while. A media guy who is also a runner, Nick is an inspiration for me and I'm honored to have him on the show.     FOLLOW NICK ON LINKEDIN     FOLLOW NICK ON IG     FOLLOW NICK ON STRAVA     MOSTLY HARMLESS STORY & FOLLOWUP     VOTE FOR TROY     VOTE FOR TPOY     Sponsors: Use code freetrail10 for 10% off Speedland Footwear Grab a trail running pack from Osprey Use code FT15 for 15% off Gnarly Nutrition Go to ketone.com/freetrail30 for 30% off a subscription of Ketone IQ   Freetrail Links: Website | Freetrail Pro | Patreon | Instagram | YouTube | Freetrail Experts     Dylan Links: Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn | Strava

Use the power of your mind to get the results you want on race day. This episode is a little different than usual. I will guide you through a race visualization just for runners. For best results, lie down in a quiet place, use headphones, and have an open mind.  You'll experience a detailed picture of race day from the time you awake to the finish line including: Everything you'll need to go through to have the race of your dreams, What you'll do when things go wrong, and you'll imagine All the sights and sounds you'll encounter for a complete sensory effect With practice, your brain will feel like you've already experienced a successful race. If nothing else, you will finish the practice more relaxed and calm. And if all goes well, you will reach the starting line of your race calm yet excited to do your very best.  In my own running, I used visualization before every race. It was one of the many tools that I relied on to run my 2:58 marathon at age 42 and I recommend it to all the athletes I coach. Welcome to the Planted Runner. I'm Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. Love The Planted Runner's episodes, the variety of topics and short length! As a mostly plant based runner, Clare's tips are always great! Highly recommend for any type of runner! Dreamer517  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Mental Strength! I found The Planted Runner blog and podcast when I was in the midst of training for my first half marathon this past spring. Coach Claire's information on a variety of running topics have really helped as a beginner; I especially love the mental strength minute segment! I never thought that running would be a part of my life, but I started a running habit in order to combat postpartum depression. I'm so thankful to have this podcast as a resource so that I can continue to train in an intelligent way, with a lower chance of injury. In the fall, I am planning to run my second half marathon. I am so excited to start my Half Marathon training plan from The Planted Runner in a few weeks.

Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! After reading her book, "The Longest Race: Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike's Elite Running Team", I was eager to connect with Kara Goucher for an in-depth conversation. For those less familiar with the road running scene, Kara was one of the top American distance runners of the 2000s and 2010s, achieving podium finishes at prestigious events like the Boston and New York City Marathons, as well as the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. She also claimed victory at the US Half Marathon Championships the same year, among numerous other accolades. In 2004, she joined the Nike Oregon Project, led by distance running legend Alberto Salazar. Behind the scenes, however, Salazar was pushing the boundaries of anti-doping regulations while fostering a toxic culture of misogyny and athlete abuse. Despite the risk of losing everything and facing immense pressure, Kara found the courage to speak out and successfully advocate for meaningful change. In our discussion, we explore various themes from The Longest Race, and we also discuss current events, including her podcast with Des Linden - "Nobody Asked Us", and the challenges with today's anti-doping investigative models. Before we dive in, please note that this episode is a crossover from my guest-hosting stint on the Run To The Top podcast earlier this spring.
