Albany, New York, isn't just the state capital—it's one of the oldest cities in America, layered with centuries of untold stories, buried secrets, and forgotten cemeteries hiding beneath modern streets. In this episode, we're joined by Maeve McEneny-Johnson, Director of Community Engagement with Discover Albany and a seventh-generation native of the capital city whose love for its past runs deep. Maeve shares how her childhood—riding shotgun with her father, the local historian—sparked a lifelong passion for preserving and sharing Albany's overlooked history. From colonial scandal at Cherry Hill, Abraham Lincoln's eerie local ties and hauntings to the 1911 Capitol fire—and the Civil War veteran night watchman some say never left his post—Maeve brings Albany's rich, strange, and sometimes unsettling stories to life in a way few others can. Whether you crave folklore, true crime, or a good historical, paranormal rabbit hole, this episode uncovers the heartbeat of a city that refuses to be forgotten. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! In the small town of Vinton, Iowa, you'll find the Horridge House, a two-story, red brick home built in 1859 by Dr. Hewitt Clingan. It was sold to George and Elizabeth Horridge a decade later, who left their mark on this storied residence. Visitors to the Horridge House today will be transported back in time with its period furnishings, clothing displays, and numerous artifacts. But there's more to this house than meets the eye. Now housing the Benton County Historical Society's Archives & Museum, the Horridge House is a repository of historical knowledge and artifacts and a potential hotspot for ghostly activity. The house is filled with peculiar and unexplainable occurrences, from shadowy figures to strange noises and suspicious footsteps. Many believe these hauntings are linked to the historical artifacts stored within its walls. Could it also be that the spirits of Mr. Horridge, along with both his first AND second wives, still reside in the home? Today on the Grave Talks, what is haunting the Horridge House? A conversation with Katie Hopkins, Benton County Historical Society Vice President and Paranormal Tour Manager. This is Part Two of our conversation. The King Opera House in Van Buren, Arkansas, isn't just a beautiful relic of the past—it's a living, breathing theater with a haunted history unlike any other. Today, Gavin Webb joins us to talk about his paranormal documentary that dives deep into the legends and lore of this 133-year-old opera house. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! For centuries, scientists, skeptics, and believers alike have been intrigued by questions like "What causes ghostly experiences?" "Are ghosts real?" and "Why do certain people report numerous ghostly encounters while others experience none?" Brandon Massullo's The Ghost Studies offers a glimpse into the research and theories that shed light on these mysteries. This book is far more than a compilation of ghost stories. It includes research on the role of energy and electricity in hauntings, examining how emotions, bioenergetics, and the environment contribute to supernatural phenomena. Additionally, it explores why some individuals are more susceptible to ghostly encounters. Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or somewhere in between, this book promises to challenge your understanding of the paranormal. This is Part Two of our conversation. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! The Graestone Manor Bed and Breakfast is a beautifully preserved Victorian mansion along the Erie Canal in Royalton, New York. Nestled in the quiet town of Gasport, this manor is a gem on the Niagara Wine Trail. Silas Newcomb, settled the property in 1833, planting apple and pear trees that still bear fruit today. Over the decades, the estate changed hands—from Silas's son Albert to neighbors Horace and Harriet Chapin and then to Curtis Root in 1865. Root, a racehorse enthusiast, left a lasting legacy with his racetrack and the famed racehorse Hamiltonian. But beneath its historical facade, Graestone Manor harbors a world of the supernatural. Visitors have reported the sound of heated arguments, the echo of ghostly horse hooves, and the chilling sight of a woman's apparition at the window. Whispers of a mysterious vortex in the basement and shadowy figures wandering the halls add to the eerie atmosphere. And what is it like to be a psychic medium living in this historic manor? And why are the former owners' spirits excited about Heather and her husband living in the home? Today on The Grave Talks, the Haunted History of Graestone Manor with owner and psychic medium Heather Rease Mattison. For more information, go to graestonemanor.com. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Beneath the quiet streets of Ellinwood, Kansas, lies a forgotten world—a sprawling underground city built in the late 1800s. Once a hub of activity, the tunnels connected brothels, saloons, gambling dens, barber shops, and even a harness store. Though most of this hidden network is now sealed off, parts remain open to the public, offering a glimpse into the town's bawdy and bustling past. My sister Cathy and I explored the tunnels and toured the historic Wolf Hotel, which sits atop the underground passages. The hotel, while beautifully preserved, has its own ghost stories—most notably the spirit of a man who took his own life in the dining room in 1927. While we expected history, we didn't expect the sudden cold spots, the odd feeling of being watched, or the lingering sadness in the air. For lovers of haunted history like us, Ellinwood was unforgettable—equal parts fascinating, eerie, and unexpectedly emotional. Today, on the Grave Talks, the historic Wolf Hotel and what's below it, with Amanda Coots, paranormal investigator and historian at the Wolf Hotel. This is Part Two of our conversation. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! In the late 1800s, the Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was touted as a revolutionary innovation in incarceration. A rotating "human hamster wheel" of cells promised security with minimal manpower. In reality? It turned into a logistical nightmare—and, some say, a spiritual one. Operating from 1885 to 1969, this bizarre vertical jail witnessed everything from despair to death… and apparently, some souls never checked out. Paranormal activity has been reported as far back as the 1950s, with even jailors refusing to sleep in their quarters. In this classic episode of The Grave Talks, we explore the unsettling legacy of this architectural oddity with Kat Slaughter, Director of the Squirrel Cage Jail and RailsWest Railroad Museum. Are the spirits of inmates still turning in their cells? Or has something else taken up residence in this rotating relic? This is Part Two of our conversation. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! In the 1850s, Kansas was a battleground—not just politically, but literally—as pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces fought for control of the territory. At the heart of this struggle stood the Free State Hotel in Lawrence, Kansas, built in 1855 as a symbol of abolitionist resistance. It was burned to the ground the day it opened. Colonel Shalor Eldridge rebuilt the hotel, determined to see it rise again—and some say he never truly left. The current Eldridge Hotel stands on the same site, with the original 1855 cornerstone embedded in the wall of the famously haunted Room 506. In Part One of our conversation with historian Dennis Sneed, we dive into the violent roots of the hotel, the eerie activity that continues to this day, and why some believe the spirit of Colonel Eldridge still checks in guests from the beyond. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Carthage, Tennessee, is situated at the confluence of two rivers, and it served as a strategic post during the Civil War, acting as a major Federal base in the battle for the Upper Cumberland River region. In the heart of this small town, you'll find the Smith County Courthouse, constructed between 1877 and 1879, standing proudly on the downtown square. This architectural gem, praised as the "handsomest in the state" back in the day, is a stunning example of the Second Empire style, and it's no wonder that in 1979, it earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. But behind its elegant façade lies a dark and eerie history. The courthouse, the second to be built on this site, has witnessed public hangings and untimely deaths, leaving restless spirits in its wake, like "Jeff," who seems to rule the third floor, Paul, who tragically died on the first floor during a Christmas event, and a mysterious lady who haunts the stairs. Tucked away in the heart of Springfield, Missouri, stands a towering limestone fortress with a past as layered and mysterious as its walls, the Pythian Castle. Built in 1913 by the secretive Knights of Pythias, it was never meant for rituals or brotherhood meetings. Instead, it was a home for aging members nearing life's end and orphaned children left behind by tragedy. But that was only the beginning. During World War II, the U.S. military took over, transforming the castle into a rehabilitation center and a holding site for prisoners of war. Rumors of confinement, hidden tunnels, and unspoken wartime horrors still linger in the basement shadows. More than a century later, the castle still stands—and, it seems, so do its former residents. Disembodied voices ripple through the marble lobby. Doors slam where no one walks. Children's laughter echoes in its halls, as does a woman's greeting, but who, and where, is she? Today, we step inside the haunted Pythian Castle with Melissa Thuro —where history never rests, and it seems, neither do the spirits. This is Part Two of our conversation.
