1 Kings 16:21-17:7: The House of Omri Can't Stop the LORD's Word

Omri, the commander of Israel's army, came out on top when the dust settled after Zimri's death. Although Omri established Samaria and brought Israel to greater political prominence during his reign, the writer of 1 Kings judges Omri as an unfaithful king whose wickedness before the LORD is the worst so far. Omri didn't remain on that pedestal for long, as his son Ahab was more wicked still, influenced by his pagan wife Jezebel. Nonetheless, the LORD remained faithful to Israel in those days and sent Elijah as one of His greatest prophets. Elijah's ministry began by predicting a drought as judgment against Israel's wickedness, even as the LORD provided for Elijah during that time of no rain.  Rev. Stephen Preus, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 Kings 16:21-17:7.  To learn more about Trinity Lutheran, visit trinitylcmsvinton.org. "A Kingdom Divided” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Kings. The division in the kingdom of Israel in this part of history was greater than a matter of north and south. The biggest division was between the people and their God. Yet even as the people rebelled against the LORD as their King, still He remained faithful to call them back to Himself through His prophets, working through history to send the good and gracious King, Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

As they were originally one long book, 2 Samuel begins where 1 Samuel ends. News of the death of Saul and Jonathan reaches David from an Amalekite who likely thinks he will be rewarded by David. After David confirms the death of the LORD's anointed by hearing the testimony of the Amalekite a second time, David rightly executes his office by putting the Amalekite to death for being unafraid to lift his hand against the LORD's anointed. David leads the people of Judah in mourning the death of Saul and Jonathan. He does so in forgiveness for the man who had tried to kill him and in love for his best friend.  Rev. Stephen Preus, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Samuel 1:1-27.  "A Kingdom Unlike All the Nations” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Samuel. This time in Israel's history has its highs and lows, but the LORD's faithfulness never wavers. He provides His Word to be proclaimed faithfully through prophets like Samuel and Nathan. Even as princes like Saul and David sit on an earthly throne, the LORD remains King over His people, even as He does now and forever through the Lord Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Tonight's guest, Justin Pladsen, was born and raised in Vinton, Iowa. Vinton is a quiet, little farm town that's ideal for raising a family. When Justin was growing up there, he got into a lot of the things boys did in Vinton back then. One of the things he liked doing, more than anything, was running around town with his buddies, Mark, Tom, and Charlie. On June 7th of 1993, he and his buddies decided that they wanted to go tubing down a creek called Mud Creek, that's just east of Vinton. They planned to source the inner tubes at a local Firestone tire shop. When Justin told his dad about his plans to go tubing down the creek, at dinner one evening, his dad made it clear to him that he wasn't allowed to do that. It was too dangerous. Being an 11-year-old boy, his dad's words went in one ear and out the other. He went tubing the next day, with his buddies, anyway. That was a decision he came to regret. He and his friends came very close to dying the next day. Less than 24 hours after being told by his dad that he couldn't go, Justin was running as fast as he could, through the woods, trying to get away from a Sasquatch that was coming after him. What happened that day? What lead up to Justin running for his life? We hope you'll tune in and listen to him lay it out for you.If you'd like to help support the show, by buying your own Bigfoot Eyewitness t-shirt or sweatshirt, please visit the Bigfoot Eyewitness Show Store, by going to https://Dogman-Encounters.MyShopify.comI produce 3 other shows that are available on your favorite podcast app. If you haven't checked them out, here are links to all 3 channels on the Spreaker App...My Bigfoot Sighting https://www.spreaker.com/show/my-bigfoot-sighting Dogman Encounters https://www.spreaker.com/show/dogman-encounters-radio_2 My Paranormal Experience https://www.spreaker.com/show/my-paranormal-experience Thanks, as always, for listening!

On March 16, 1974, a sketch appeared on The Carol Burnett Show featuring Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence and Harvey Korman portraying a “normal” American family -- warts and all. This sketch, known as “The Family”, led by a then 25 year-old Vicki Lawrence playing a gray-haired 63 year-old ‘Mama', spawned 30 more sketches, a TV Movie (Eunice) and finally a spin-off series of its own (Mama's Family) which ran for 130 episodes over six seasons both on CBS and in syndication (1983-1990).In “The Family”, Carol Burnett played the melodramatic, ambitious, brow-beaten daughter of ‘Mama'. Mama, played by Vicki Lawrence, is an exaggeratedly mean-spirited and insult-spitting widow and mother of five children: three sons played by guest stars Roddy McDowell, Alan Alda and Tom Smothers -- and two daughters: Eunice & Ellen (played by Betty White). Eunice's husband Ed Higgins was played by Harvey Korman. How did one simple sketch take on such a huge life of its own, creating a sprawling TV empire that some are calling “The Mama-Verse”? Susan and Sharon put on their housecoats and curly gray wigs to find out!THE CONVERSATIONCarol Burnett's career started with a Broadway role starring as the lead in Once Upon a Mattress and then as a rising star on The Garry Moore Show. The Carol Burnett Show was hugely successful, running eleven seasons, garnering 70 Emmy nominations and winning 25.Carol Burnett was encouraged to “speak up for herself” by another TV comedy legend -- Lucille Ball.A fan letter from then 18 year-old Vicki Lawrence to Carol Burnett led to her actually being cast as a regular on the show!“HARVARD SCHOOL OF COMEDY”: Lawrence cites Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett as her show business mentors during the 11 years she spent on the show.ONE-HIT WONDER: Five years into her run on The Carol Burnett Show, Lawrence had a hit song, recording “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”!In the TV movie Eunice, Mama suddenly only has three children instead of five -- what happened to the others? And why is one of them suddenly Ken Berry?Vicki Lawrence was nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of ‘Mama' in Eunice. The TV series Mama's Family was aired first as a prime-time network comedy and later as a nationally syndicated series. It originally ran for two years on CBS, was cancelled in 1984 -- and then revived TWO YEARS LATER in 1986 by Lorimar Syndication to run for additional 100 episodes!NAME SWITCH: The character Ken Berry played started out as “Phillip” in the TV-movie but then became “Vinton” in the TV series. The TV show introduced “Fran” played by future Golden Girl, Rue McClanahan -- playing Betty White's aunt! The TV show also introduced Vinton's children Buzz and Sonya played by “80's TV Ladies” alum, Eric Brown and actress Karin Argoud.Mama's neighbor, Naomi Oates, was played by “Another World” “The Nanny” and now “80s TV Ladies” alum, Dorothy Lyman! So join Susan and Sharon as they talk Lou Grant, social justice, Julie Andrews and the first Live Televised Cinderella musical, “Raytown, Missouri”, Kamala Harris, Matlock, driving your own story -- and “Miss Fireball of Inglewood”!AUDIO-OGRAPHYWatch The Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family across many platforms. Psalm 147 not only reminds us that it is good to sing and give thanks to God alone, but it also gives us good reasons why. First, we give thanks to God as the One who redeems His people: past, present, and future. Second, we give thanks to God as the One who cares for His creation according to His steadfast love. Third, we give thanks to God as the One who speaks His Word to bring His peace and blessing.  Rev. Stephen Preus, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 147.  "Psalms of Thanksgiving” is a series on Sharper Iron that looks to several psalms to help us give thanks to God. The LORD gives blessings to His whole creation, even all evil people. As we pray the psalms, He teaches us to receive all His gifts with thanksgiving, knowing that He is good and His steadfast love endures forever.

Grace Cordovano is an expert healthcare navigating solutionist and award winning, board-certified patient advocate, and Grace Vinton is an account director at Amendola, Patient Advocate, and the host of Like a Girl Media's Podcast "HITea With Grace”. In this discussion, recorded at Digital Health and AI Summit in Boston, they discussed AI use cases for improved patient experience in healthcare, how patients already use AI, and more.  Read the summary of the event in our newsletter: https://fodh.substack.com/p/ai-digital-health-pharma Key points:  AI can significantly reduce the administrative burden on patients, especially those managing chronic conditions, caregiving responsibilities, or complex medical records. Patients are using tools like ChatGPT to prepare for medical appointments by generating lists of questions and organizing medical records. AI can assist with translating complex medical information into more understandable language. Patient advocates emphasized the importance of involving patients in the design and implementation of AI in healthcare, ensuring tools cater to different types of patients (e.g., those with terminal illnesses, multiple comorbidities, etc.). It is critical for healthcare companies to involve diverse patient voices throughout the development of AI tools and offer fair compensation to prevent bias. The healthcare industry needs to improve digital literacy among patients, ensuring they understand how to use AI tools effectively and responsibly. Resources like the Patients Included Charter and organizations like the Light Collective and Savvy Coop were highlighted as valuable for patient education and advocacy. Advice for Patients on Using AI: 1. Start with Questions 2. Refine Prompts 3. Check for Errors 4. Be mindful of security and data privacy https://www.facesofdigitalhealth.com/

In the small town of Vinton, Iowa, you'll find the Horridge House, a two-story, red brick home built in 1859 by Dr. Hewitt Clingan. It was sold to George and Elizabeth Horridge a decade later, who left their mark on this storied residence. Visitors to the Horridge House today will be transported back in time with its period furnishings, clothing displays, and numerous artifacts. But there's more to this house than meets the eye. Now housing the Benton County Historical Society's Archives & Museum, the Horridge House is a repository of historical knowledge and artifacts and a potential hotspot for ghostly activity. The house is filled with peculiar and unexplainable occurrences, from shadowy figures to strange noises and suspicious footsteps. Many believe these hauntings are linked to the historical artifacts stored within its walls. Could it also be that the spirits of Mr. Horridge, along with both his first AND second wives, still reside in the home? Today on the Grave Talks, what is haunting the Horridge House? A conversation with Katie Hopkins, Benton County Historical  Society Vice President and Paranormal Tour Manager. This is Part Two of our conversation. Emily Dalfrey lives across the street from Niblett's Bluff Cemetery, where generations of her family are buried, in Vinton, Louisiana. In 2016, a period of prolonged rainfall caused flooding so severe that people could drive boats over the cemetery. Some of Dalfrey's own family members' caskets were carried away and deposited in her yard.Unsure how to restore the cemetery, the community contracted Gulf Coast Forensic Solutions, a company that helps people locate and rebury loved ones after natural disasters damage cemeteries.Read the rest of this article on sciencefriday.com.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
