Looking at history through this lens has always been one of his, call it, past times. One could say it's fun. Currently though, he has stepped up that custom to include the protracted process of attempting to archive as much of these unusual and odd articles confined by time that, once found, get dusted off and given their day in the light once more. These now relics of a bygone era and their tales of high strangeness get neatly tucked away within the Odd Old News Substack, nested there for everyones entertainment, but also specifically for research purposes for himself and others. Why, one might ask, would someone spend hours and hours reading the old tombs of dusty newspapers, chasing down these gems of our history. Well, It all started one day long ago with a question, he wanted to see if there where any old newspaper articles about giant hairy wild men{What they used to call Big Foot} reported on in the last 200+ years or so. Low and behold, there were, and lots of them. The search was now on and soon expanded to other topics derived from a lifetime of interest that he has had in all things of high strangeness. Sea monsters, ghost, lost cities, wild man and more. A late-night sighting of an unexplained "six-foot Man-Goat" has got local residents spooked according to the local paper. The incident happened on the A425 near the village of Staverton at around 2am in the early hours of the morning on Sunday February 2022A foul-mouthed ghost who tells walkers to “f*** off” is still said to be haunting locals who are growing fed up of the rude and nasty spirited apparition. The local legend of an angry ghost who shouts and swears at visitors to Dead Woman's Ditch, a beauty spot in the Somerset's Quantock Hills areaI never expected to find anything on my Mother's side as I believed as she did that her paternal and maternal ancestors came from Ireland when the Manchester ship canal was built. But now, after tracing her heritage I was amazed to find that is not the case and it led me to a mysterious death never investigated, a coach with a heraldic flag, and a Victorian child born out of wedlock who it is said is descended from a certain Lord through DNA on my Mums, Fathers side.As the map has now outgrown its data usage I have to remove a vast amount of information from it as people are having difficulty accessing it. In this segment of "The Strange Reality with Dave Emmons," my guest is Mike Bass. Mike has written an entertaining book about "Frightful Folklore of North America." He tells us short stories that originate from Greenland to the Panama Canal. There are some stories that most people might remember, like the Headless Man and the Headless Nun, Sasquatch, the Goat Man of Texas, Vampires of Mexico, Chupacabra of Puerto Rico origination, The Haint Spirit of the US, and The Banshee of the Badlands. Mike gives a history of some of these Folklore Tales. He claims these stories have some truth to them throughout history. Mike tells us stories from Canada, including Ogopogo from British Columbia, Canada, and the Devil's Island Giant from Manitoba, Canada. Most stories you might have heard as a young child. We had a fun time reliving these age-old stories - campfire stories, I called them. Mike Bass started in the supernatural as a child growing up in a house with spirits. Since then, his interest in folklore expanded, and he began researching these stories. He is a printmaker, and he and his wife developed artwork using ink and pencil drawings. The book has the illustrations they drew. They make opaque palettes that work well with folkloric subjects. Together, they own The Zip Dang Shop in Madison, and Mike is the author of two Folklore books: Frightful Folklore of North America and Folklore Oracle. They drew cards of Folklore creatures for the book Folklore Oracle. Mike's book can be found on Amazon and other outlets. I've received countless inquiries about the Goatman phenomenon over the years, usually referencing 2 well-known accounts from the past and present. These would be the Maryland Goatman and the Pop Lick Monster. Numerous urban legends exist about the creature's origins and the methods it employs to claim its victims. According to some accounts, the beast uses hypnosis or voice mimicry to lure trespassers into their lair. Other legends explain these creatures' origins, including that it is a human-goat hybrid and a circus freak who vowed revenge after being mistreated. Other versions claim that the Goatman is a government or military experiment that escaped a top-secret facility. There are no limits to various theories and conjectures.But is there proof that these creatures exist among us? Let's explore the possibilities together. In this episode of Expanded Perspectives, Kyle is solo in Skelekin Studios, as Cam has been under the weather all week before heading off on vacation in Oklahoma. Wasting no time, Kyle dives straight into some eerie stories. First, he shares the unsettling experience of a Pennsylvania teenager haunted by visions of a Goatman appearing in his bedroom at night. However, the creature hasn't returned in the 22 years since the man still feels lingering anxiety from the encounters. Next, Kyle recounts the story of a Wisconsin resident who ventured into the Northwoods backcountry. After stopping his truck to get some rest, something mysteriously rocked the vehicle. Though he didn't see anything, he quickly drove away, unnerved by the experience. After the break, Kyle brings us some strange stories about time slips. We encountered a peculiar story several years ago while working on the show. Some hikers had reportedly spent the night at the Wythburn Inn, only to be later informed that this was impossible—the inn had been submerged during the creation of the Thirlmere Reservoir in 1894. A similar tale emerged from France, where British travelers stayed at an old-fashioned hotel but, on their return journey, found that it no longer existed. Another account involves tourists on a bus who spotted an appealing hotel, got off at the next stop, and walked back, only to find the area wholly different and the hotel nowhere to be seen. There's also the story of two young women who set off one evening to attend a village dance a few miles away but traversed an eerie and unfamiliar landscape that seemed far from the one they knew. These strange anecdotes are examples of what's known as a "time-slip"—a type of psychical phenomenon. These incidents seem to fall into two main categories: in the first, people inadvertently find themselves in a place that existed only in the past; in the second, they enter a familiar place that is altered, leaving them confused and disoriented. Explaining these occurrences rationally is challenging, especially when those involved appear genuinely shaken or perplexed. Dismissing them as fabrications seems unfair, and in cases where the experience is shared, attributing it to hallucination feels overly simplistic. Like many paranormal phenomena, rational explanations may be more comfortable, but these stories remain mysterious and difficult to explain fully. Nestled between the Texas towns of Denton and Copper Canyon is an unassuming old bridge steeped in demonic legend.  "Goatman's Bridge" is a humble wooden structure with an eerie reputation. Goatman's Bridge isn't just a relic of the past; it's a hotbed of paranormal activity. Many believe the surrounding forest is haunted by an evil presence summoned by satanic rituals, with documented accounts of physical attacks. Legend has it that it is haunted by a half-goat, half-man creature with glowing red eyes and a menacing snarl. There is a legend suggesting that this demonic presence was summoned by the ghost of a Black goat farmer who the Ku Klux Klan brutally lynched at the bridge. Others believe that the bridge is haunted by malevolent spirits conjured by local occultists, who are said to have performed sacrificial rituals in the nearby woods.
