They called it “The Closest Thing to Hell.” A name scrawled on a wooden sign by a chicken thief, but backed by nearly a century of darkness. The Old Licking County Jail in Ohio shut its doors in 1987 after 98 brutal years—but the inmates never left. Join Anne and Renata as they step inside a fortress of stone and steel where tormented souls still linger. From chilling EVPs and shadowy apparitions to the slamming of unseen cell doors and eerie chants echoing through the halls, this is more than just a haunted jail—it's a prison of the damned. With infamous inmates like the murderous Laura Devlin—who earned herself a new name after a crime too twisted to forget—this place doesn't just hold echoes of the past… it replays them. The impact of Intel's two new massive semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Licking County, Ohio, will go far beyond the $20 billion investment itself. The two new plants – with more likely to follow – will generate tens of thousands of new jobs across Ohio and will in turn draw contractors and other high-profile manufacturers to Central Ohio. These new employees won't arrive alone: they're arrive with families in tow looking to make Central Ohio home. The impact means that Central Ohio's public infrastructure – transportation, parks, schools, water and sewer lines, and every kind of public service – will need to expand rapidly and to stay ahead of the growth. Chandler, Arizona, home to another Intel plant, had one high school before Intel moved in. It's now the second-largest school district in Arizona. Can Central Ohio's towns keep up with the region's exciting growth, and even stay ahead? Hear from the mayors of three key regional cities how each is planning for – and embracing – Central Ohio's high-growth future. The panelists are: Donald Barnard, Mayor of Johnstown, OH Laurie Jadwin, Mayor of Gahanna, OH Sloan Spalding, Mayor of New Albany, OH The host is Keary McCarthy, Executive Director of The Ohio Mayors Alliance and The Ohio Mayors Alliance Foundation This CMC forum was sponsored by GBQ and Otterbein University with support from the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. Described as “The Closest Thing to Hell,” on a sign made by an inmate incarcerated for stealing chickens, the Licking County Jail ceased operations in 1987 after 98 years of operation. Experienced investigators and guests have captured full blown apparitions, recorded ghastly EVPs that chill to the bone, encountered disembodied voices, chanting and the slamming of jail cell doors. This place has had some very sensational, and memorable inmates, including Laura Devlin, who was given another name after her dastardly crime, so it's highly likely that many of them will still be calling this place home.In this episode of the True Hauntings Podcast we lock ourselves away with the dead and deadly inmates of Old Licking County Jail. Many thanks to Adelaide's Haunted Horizons for their soundscape from Licking Jail. We all might one day be replaced by robots or ChatGPT. But for now, businesses still need humans to make computer chips or staff daycare centers. Problem is, too few workers in the US are actually working and too few people are having babies. That's a major concern for American industry, policymakers, and most immediately, tech giant Intel Corp. The company is trying to find 7,000 people in central Ohio to build its new semiconductor facilities and 3,000 more to staff them.On this, the season's final episode of Stephanomics, we dig into the super-tight US labor market, which is expected to get even tighter as more of the nation's skilled workers retire. First, senior reporter Shawn Donnan visits Licking County, Ohio, future home to a $20 billion chip plant that will pay workers an average annual salary of $135,000. The Biden administration hopes Intel's project sparks a wave of manufacturing projects in strategic industries like semiconductors and electric vehicles. Then reporter Ben Steverman offers some insight into the roughly 2.6 million US workers who've gone missing since the pandemic began. A recent study by Harvard University economist Raj Chetty suggests many of them waited tables, cut hair and staffed gyms in relatively affluent neighborhoods. When these wealthy residents slashed their spending and stayed home as Covid-19 bore down, it created a wave of business closures and job losses. Many of those workers, Steverman explains, never returned. Meanwhile the nation's working-age population is growing at its slowest pace since 1960, and total population actually dropped in at least 24 states, including Ohio. Host Stephanie Flanders follows up on America's demographic challenges with University of Maryland economist Melissa Kearney, also director of the Aspen Economic Strategy Group. The US birth rate, at just under 1.7 children per woman, is well below the so-called replacement rate of 2.1, and the share of working-age adults who are actually working is falling, says Kearney. Long term, fewer workers means fewer ideas and less specialization, she warns, all of which could mean lower income and living standards in the US and globally. Recently, food and agriculture groups released the sixth annual Feeding the Economy report, a historic farm-to-fork economic analysis revealing how these sectors influence the local and broader United States economies. The report shows that 1.5 million jobs in Ohio are tied to food and agriculture and those industries add over $10 billion dollars to the state's bottom line annually. As those numbers continue to grow, so does the need for improved and additional infrastructure and the recruitment of more workers into these career paths.
