In Council Bluffs, Iowa stands a unique structure that served as the Pottawattamie County Jail for over 80 years.
Lindsay and Madison discuss the Squirrel Cage Jail, as well as why a solid metal structure is just a bad idea, that you shouldn't trust something that involves a hand crank, and how to be historic while also being a bad idea. This week we are at the sister location of one of our favorite investigations to date, the Crawfordsville Rotary Jail. Another rotary jail, this one being the only three story one ever built, this one is unique in its design and the inmates it held. It housed one of the most infamous murderers in the state. With five deaths inside its walls, and executions on the side, this location is primed for some good hauntings. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! In the 1880s, the Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was considered a revolutionary concept in housing inmates. They claimed the new concept allowed for "maximum security with minimum jailer attention." It was a "19th-century marvel,” constructed so that only one jailor could watch an entire prison full of prisoners. The cells were all positioned on a central carousel that, when a hand crank was turned, would rotate the cells so that only one could be entered at a time. However, it didn't take long to realize this concept didn't work as they thought it would. While the jailer could attend to the one cell – the others were trapped. Of the 18 prisons built, most were closed within a couple of years after opening – however – the Squirrel Cage Jail remained in operation until 1969. But it seems some of those who were once there are still there. Reports of hauntings date back to the 1950s when a jailor refused to sleep in his quarters because he believed it to be haunted. In this episode, we talk about the hauntings of the Squirrel Cage Jail with Kat Slaughter, Director of the Squirrel Cage Jail and RailsWest Railroad Museum. This is Part Two of our conversation. Grab yourselves some M&Ms (be sure they're not Skittles) and join us where The Activity Continues. Opened in 1885, the notorious Squirrel Cage Jail ran its operation up until 1969. The jail was known to house everyone from petty perpetrators to violent criminals. Designed as a rotating jail, inmates were confined to their cells and could only be let out from the entire jail spinning to a single opening where a guard was stationed. This had its faults as inmates arms and legs would be severed, with one inmate having his head crushed. Now a museum, this infamous jail is home to many of the artifacts and spirits that still roam its cylindrical corridors. We sit down to discuss our most recent investigation at the Squirrel Cage Jail. Despite all my rage, I am still just a squirrel in a cage. This week, I am bringing you the story of the Squirrel Cage Jail, AKA Pottawattamie County Jail, in Council Bluffs, IA! More specifically, I'm bringing you the story of my friends and me getting LOCKED DOWN inside the jail for an entire night. I'm truly living my Zak Bagans fantasy.
In the 1880s, the Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was considered a revolutionary concept in housing inmates. They claimed the new concept allowed for "maximum security with minimum jailer attention." It was a "19th-century marvel,” constructed so that only one jailor could keep an eye on an entire prison full of prisoners. The cells were all positioned on a central carousel that, when a hand crank was turned, would rotate the cells so that only one could be entered at a time. However, it didn't take long to realize this concept didn't work as they thought it would. While the jailer could attend to one cell – the others were simply trapped. Since the beginning of this podcast, we have strived to bring humanity to the offenders we cover. However, we have never talked about the treatment some have received while incarcerated - until now. Today we cover the conditions of The Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs, IA. Condemned 22 times by the city in the first 75 years of operation, it continued to remain open and operational for another nine years. Listen in as we tell you how the inmates housed there lived. We've covered Jails and Prisons but have you seen one that's done in a rotary style?!?!?!?! Yes it's not a traditional jail but a cheaper version only requiring one guard and lots of danger. It was doomed to fail and came with a lot of death and now a lot of ghosts stories. We travel to Council Bluffs, Iowa to visit the Squirrel Cage Jail to see its modern (for the 1800's) layout and visit with the resident ghosts there. Come take the tour with us and decide for yourself if it's haunted or not?? Make sure to ask for Jake Bird. The Pottawattamie County Jail is also known as Squirrel Cage Jail is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It's built like a giant Lazy Susan and the cells are pie shaped. There is a single door on all 3 levels, but you need to use a hand crank to spin the jail and line it up. Some very infamous prisoners served time in this jail, including Jake Bird, also known as the Tacoma Ax-killer. Join me again in episode 22 as I cover the Pottawattamie County jail, aka Squirrel Cage jail, and the unsolved murder of 4 young ladies in the Austin yogurt shop Murders of 1991.
Happy Spooky Thuuuuuuuuursday? WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING? While the timeline may be a bit different this week, the stories are as good as ever. It's a shabby to chic week as Kala tells us about the run-down and broken Pattowattamie Jail House Museum (better known as the "Squirrel Cage Jail") in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Brittany gives us the details of the adorable and fancy Terrace Inn and 1911 Restaurant in Petoskey, Michigan. While they're two very different buildings, they're both haunted AF. This episode has poorly designed buildings, maybe ghost cats (??), the weird basement boy, a piano that plays by itself, and Kala breaking out into song... again.
Hear all about our recent ghost hunt at the Squirrel Cage Jail! This unique location is a great stop in the Midwest to get your paranormal fix.

The “squirrel cage” jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa is unique in many ways. The largest of a rare 19th century design that featured a cell block that rotated, the 1885 former Pottawattamie County jail has increasingly come under scrutiny as a site of robust paranormal activity. Occurrences that were difficult to explain date to its early days as a jail. In modern times, teams of paranormal investigators have conducted tests with positive results. The building was featured on Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures, Serial Killer Spiritsmini series in 2019.In this episode, host Richard Warner talks with Historical Society vice-president J.W. LeMaster, Society Museums Director Kat Slaughter, and Sarah Stream, member of the Paranormal Research Institute and investigative team Paranormania. The trio discuss why the history of this building makes it particularly likely as site of activity, what types of evidence are being found, how investigations are undertaken, equipment needed, and tips for those new to the field that might want to participate in a paranormal event or investigation. For more information or to contact the Historical Society go to the website www.TheHistoricalSociety.org. The Marble Forest is back, after a week hiatus! This week Jessi takes us to Council Bluffs, Iowa. We visit the Squirrel Cage Jail, one of the last of it's kind. This jail was meant for maximum security and minimal attention, or maybe it's just a lazy susan for prisoners. Was this jail the inspiration for tea cup? Which prisoner will be the next fashionista? We then travel all the way to Suffolk England, where Amber tells us the tale of the green children of Woolpit. Where did the children come from and what makes them so green? Don't eat to many green beans or you might turn green next!
The Squirrel Cage Jail is very unassuming. This is a regular looking historic brick building in the middle of Council Bluffs, Iowa. No one would really know there was a jail inside, save for a few windows with bars in them. A black wrought-iron gate closes off the back of the jail and a colorful statue of a horse decorated with lights stands behind it. We had featured the Squirrel Cage Jail in Ep. 284, but this would be the first time we would actually get to go inside and tour the building. But we did more than just tour this location. This was the inaugural ghost hunt hosted by History Goes Bump and seven listeners joined myself and Kelly as we searched for communication with something from beyond the veil. And we believe we received that. Join me as I share the investigation of the Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs! The Moment in Oddity was suggested by Chelsea Flowers and features Jacob Miller, a war survivor and This Month in History features the premiere of The Magic Flute. Buildings that revolve or that have portions that do have been a dream for centuries, but generally never moved past the design stage. The rotary cell jail was very real. Touted as cost effective, modern, and escape-proof the concept spread quickly throughout the Midwest. Mechanization was coming of age; invention of the telephone and building of the transcontinental railroad fostered the notion man could solve any problem with his innovations. Nationally the enthusiasm for the rotary jails waned almost as quickly as it had spread. Decried as inhumane and dangerous, most were rapidly dismantled or converted to more traditional cells. Perhaps the most unique thing about the rotary cell jail in Council Bluffs is how long is lasted. Despite repeated efforts to close it, the “Squirrel Cage” remained the Pottawattamie County jail for 84 years. Learn more about Council Bluffs' unique jail at www.TheHistoricalSociety.org and join us on Facebook at Squirrel Cage Jail of Pottawattamie County, Iowa.
Lesson learned: when you meet a celebrity, do NOT ask to take a picture with them. Whether it’s the cast of Ghost Adventures or Robert the Doll: that embarrassing act will end up haunting you for an eternity. On this episode of For the Love of Ghosts, Juli tells us more about the Squirrel Cage Jail which, at the end of the day, is just a big, ghostly “poop shoot.” Maggie then overcomes her fear by diving head first into the story of Robert the Doll (aka Clay Aiken). Sit back, relax, and relish in the fact that your imaginary friend growing up probably didn’t kill people.
Make it past the intro and you are in for a true treat! Jules dives into the cheese curd movie projectionist's...murder? unexplainable death by indigestion? Mallory tells the history of the Squirrel Cage Jail in Council Bluffs, IA. STAY TUNED, BBS, IT'S WORTH IT.
In this episode we talk about our experience while investigating at the Squirrel Cage Jail. From crazy interaction through the mel meter and even being touched!?

Old jails just seem to be crawling with spirits as we have come to find from the several jails covered on this podcast. No matter the country, region or city and no matter the size, prisons hold spirits. One incredibly haunted jail can be found in Iowa. Council Bluffs was known as the Great Railroad Center of the Northwest. Before that time, it was a hub for trade between Native American tribes and white settlers. The Squirrel Cage Jail was built here in 1885. This jail has one of the most unique designs of any jail I have ever researched. This prison had a long run, being used until 1969. Today, it offers tours giving a glimpse into penal history and is said to be home to several spirits. Join me as I explore the history and hauntings of the Squirrel Cage Jail. The Moment in Oddity features Old Mike and This Month in History features Architect Stanford White Born. Our location was suggested by Jessica Garcia and Lynne Larsen Savage.
