This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with Seattle-based multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter, and soul innovator Brittany Davis. Originally from Kansas City, Brittany began playing piano and organ at a young age. After relocating to Seattle about a decade ago, their exceptional songwriting caught the attention of Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, leading to a deal with his label, Loosegroove Records, and the birth of two outstanding albums. Blind since birth, Brittany describes themself as a “vessel of sound,” experiencing music in spirit and colors. To Brittany, everything is an instrument — every sound, object, and moment holds musical potential. Their work spans genres, blending elements of soul, R&B, rock, and hip-hop. Her latest album, a stunner entitled Black Thunder, is the focus of this episode. Black Thunder is a profound, fully improvised, fully realized collection that recalls artists like Nina Simone and Roberta Flack in its immersive, incantatory spirit. Produced by Josh Evans, it features Davis on keys and vocals, Evan Flory-Barnes on bass, and D'Vonne Lewis on drums. The trio — who barely knew each other prior to recording together — improvised Black Thunder in a surge of interactive creativity across two days in the studio. The short window in which to work did away with overthinking and brought each musician's A-game. Steeped in Black and Afrocentric cultural influences, this is Davis's most poignant and cathartic work to date. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We're off on a haunted pub crawl through Edinburgh's Grassmarket — a charming old square with a dark and bloody past. Once home to executions, riots, and witch trials, it's now a paranormal hotspot packed with ghosts, legends, and cursed bar stools. Steeped in history and hauntings, the Grassmarket is where you can find spirits such as "Half-Hangit" Maggie Dickson, a woman who was executed at the gallows and LIVED to tell the tale (seriously), a mischievous ghost child named Maria who haunts the Last Drop bar and steals hot chocolate, and a pair of disembodied legs that wander through the White Hart Inn's cellar. We're talking phantom touches, haunted beer taps, and an infamous gallows that claimed over 100 hundred lives during ‘The Killing Times'. Join us — and the ghosts — for a round.

Join us Sunday for “A Tragedy Steeped in Tradition” as we fix our eyes on our one and only hope: Jesus.

In this episode of The Curious Realm, host Christopher Jordan welcomes researcher Richard Smith to discuss the temple of Solomon. We all have “favorite places”, and for this week's guest, it is the island of Nantucket. Julie Gerstenblatt has been spending her summers there since she was just a child. Accessible by air or by ferry, Nantucket is located 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. Steeped in history, Nantucket was once the whaling capital of the world, and even today, it seems frozen in time. Rooted in the story of the Great Fire of 1846, Julie's historical novel required years of research. Focused on three complex, strong, and determined female characters, Daughters of Nantucket explores the lonely lives of whaling wives, the secrecy of sexuality, and race relations on an island influenced by Quaker values. A lifelong writer and the proud mother of two grown children, Julie holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Teachers College, Columbia University. In this interview, she shares the struggles writers often experience. Says Julie: “You write in silence and in secrecy, but you have to share it at some point with people, and you hope it does well, but there is so much rejection.” Always inspired to write books that teach AND entertain, Julie has another historical novel scheduled for release in 2026. She's also ready to share her wisdom about what success really means. “Success is balance and fulfillment on a deeper level. It's not about the material things and the “having,” it's about being content in the “being.” Ready for a little inspiration? I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is the esteemed American painter, Lois Dodd. At 98-years-old, Dodd is famed for her paintings of her immediate surroundings, from landscapes to house roofs, windows and stairs. She paints the Night, day; outside, inside; doors that are painted, chipped; new, worn; and loved. While there is a seemingly absence of people, Dodd's paintings capture whole worlds and narratives – whether it be hose fires, or laundry hanging from a washing line. It's as though the colour, weather, light, frames, stairs, or cracks retain years worth of stories and memories, or are even characters in themselves. Steeped in American art and cultural history, referencing the likes of Hopper or Hitchcock, Dodd's works emphasise a voyeuristic, but also familiar nature. Born in 1927, Dodd was born and raised in New Jersey, mostly by her three older sisters after her parents' untimely death when she was young. It was then to Cooper Union in the 1940s, where she was amongst the burgeoning New York art scene, opening the artist-run space, the Tanager Gallery in 1952, at a similar time to iconic exhibitions such as the Ninth Street Show. Venturing to Maine, living by her artist friends Alex Katz and Jean Cohen, she took to painting views of the landscape, and by the end of the 1960s, this was now framed through a window: a perspective and device she has constantly reworked and reinvented, whether it be pressed up against her window on the Bowery, looking out onto her New York view, or of the cracked windows set in the lush, verdant countryside. Dodd allows her viewer to see something we thought we knew so well. She is an observer of nature – her works are about seeing the things that pass others by. As the critic Roberta Smith wrote in 2013: “Ms. Dodd loves the observed world. [...] She always searches out the underlying geometry but also the underlying life, and the sheer strangeness of it all.” I would also add that she is acute at highlighting the things that others iss - take her window portraits of New York City, a favorite being one fro November 2016, of her view that although is taken p by windows, places emphasis on a golden tree or blue sky, as if to latch on to the nature that grows even in the city, and the hope and beauty that exists even in the most unexpected places… Today we are recording in Dodd's home/studio in New Jersey… ahead of her major exhibition at Kunstmuseum Den Haag that opens this August in The Netherlands… Being here, I feel set in a Lois Dodd painting, brought to life by the motifs that surround me – and I can't wait to find out more. https://www.kunstmuseum.nl/en/exhibitions/lois-dodd https://www.alexandregallery.com/artists-work/lois-dodd#tab:slideshow;tab-1:thumbnails -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Mikaela Carmichael Technical support: Viva Ruggi Music by Ben Wetherfield

The memory of the Soviet triumph in World War II, or what is known as the Great Patriotic War, has become the centerpiece of Russian nationalism today. Penn State Professor Katya Haskins argues that the propensity to remember the victory over Nazi Germany and to forget Stalin's terror contributes to the Russian willingness to support the war in Ukraine. Steeped in the memory of the Great Patriotic War, Russians are inclined to believe Putin's claims about foreign threats and the need for a “special military operation” in Ukraine. How the memory of the Great Patriotic War hinges appeals to family memory is the focus of Katya Haskins' book and the subject of this episode–Remembering the War, Forgetting the Terror: Appeals to Family Memory in Putin's Russia.

We're full on this planet; there are two options. Either we kill each other, or we help each other. An eco-friendly song? Maybe. A social song? Maybe. A topical piece? Definitely. There once was a lady named Charlotte Leclerc, Who sailed on an iceberg from here to afar. "Comme un iceberg," she'd rhythmically chant, While wearing her Moiré dress for a nautical jaunt. "Delodio!" she'd cry to the curious fish, While balancing teacups on top of her dish. Her iceberg spun 'round like a crystalline top, With nary a reason or purpose to stop. The porpoises laughed and the sea turtles cheered, As Charlotte's strange vessel completely disappeared. Then popped up again near the Isle of Kazoo, Where nonsensical creatures said, "How do you do?" Charlotte Leclerc just curtsied and smiled, Her journey, though frosty, was wonderfully wild. "Delodio Moiré!" became her strange call, The most elegant iceberg captain of all! 'Moiré' is the second album by French musician and singer Charlotte Leclerc. Deeply influenced by Reunion Island, where the artist grew up. Steeped in the humid heaviness of the Indian Ocean and caressed by the freshness of the primary forests, Charlotte's songs are nourished by the small details of everyday life that we rediscover when we slow down the pace of our busy days. She uses the sound of her synthesisers and drum machines to create a blend of ambient, electronic music, and pop, and speaks to us about human relationships. Two-person relationships and universal relationships, those that connect us all and allow this planet to function a little better. Remember, "Moire" means "changing."

No matter how many prayers were whispered, strange noises filled her nights—footsteps stopping at the top of the stairs, a bizarre humming that slowed the world around her, and an unsettling presence no one could explain away. Years later, her brother heard a phantom voice calling him by his full name to come upstairs. Was it the spirit of someone left behind by Scranton's challenging past… or something darker? Stephanie here! We are taking a temporary break from the Book of Proverbs to immerse ourselves in the two major Jewish and Christian liturgical events happening this week, roughly at the same time (which is unusual): Lent and Purim. I always find it fascinating to find fresh ways to worship Jesus Christ through the connections between different feasts and seasons. So today I invite you to delight in Christ through the unexpected juxtaposition of Purim and Lent. We invite you into a delightful exploration of the divine tapestry that intertwines the ancient traditions of Purim with the solemn reverence of Lent, ultimately pointing to the redemptive Lordship of Jesus Christ. You can purchase the Spring Feasts workbook to take notes while you listen, including the gorgeous visuals we created to accompany your experience: https://www.gospelspice.com/offers/ct6coMYd Purim, a joyous and festive Jewish celebration, commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people as detailed in the book of Esther. The intricacies of the story, from the absence of God's name in the book of Esther to the sovereignty and deliverance of His people, provide a rich tapestry to explore. In the Christian tradition, Lent serves as a period of preparation and reflection leading up to Easter, encompassing forty days marked by fasting, sacrifice, and repentance. Both Purim and Lent share a dark background of struggle and the hope of a joyous feast, creating an intriguing juxtaposition. Steeped in history and tradition, Purim and Lent leads us to worship Jesus at their intersection. It's compelling to note that while Purim is celebrated with joyful feasting and the giving of gifts to the poor, Lent involves fasting before the celebration of Easter. Both observances intertwine notions of hardship and hope, underscoring the resilience and faith exhibited by believers. Purim and Lent beckon us to seek and find Jesus in the heart of these sacred observances. So, join the conversation today! Don't forget to check out our essential workbook to accompany this study. The DTC Wine Symposium Podcast Extravaganza – Part 2: The Wines and the People of Monterey County Okay, we admit it—we're Sonoma homers. Occasionally, we branch out and interview someone from Napa (gasp!). But despite our regional prejudices, the growers and winemakers of Monterey County welcomed the podcast crew—not to mention 700+ DTC Wine Symposium attendees—with open arms! Jokes aside, the Monterey County wine community were fantastic hosts all week long. We were lucky enough to sit down with friend of the pod, Adam Lee—a longtime proponent of Monterey fruit—and let him guide us through a fascinating conversation with some luminaries of the Monterey wine scene. Adam introduced us to legendary grower Gary Franscioni, owner of ROAR Wines, who helped develop and farm the vineyards that put the Santa Lucia Highlands on the winemaking map. We also met Sabrine Rodems, winemaker at the acclaimed Wrath Wines and owner/winemaker of Scratch Wines—an awesome lineup of wines that scratched an itch for the acid-driven, racy wine lovers among us. And we spoke with Rhonda Motil, VP of Marketing at J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, a family-owned winery with deep roots in the region. Jerry Lohr was one of the first to believe in Monterey's potential back in the early ‘70s, and today, J. Lohr continues to produce intricate, terroir-driven wines from over 4,000 planted acres. Of course, this was just a fraction of Monterey County's wine story. Steeped in agricultural history, the Salinas River Valley and surrounding hillsides make up one of the most important farming regions in the country—possibly the world. We learned about the power of the Monterey Canyon, the vast and deep submarine trench off the coast that plays a defining role in the region's climate. We also explored the rapid shifts in temperature, soil composition, and terroir that unfold as you travel north-south and east-west across this fertile wonderland. All in all, we hope we didn't make total fools of ourselves—because the wines were beautiful, the vineyards were stunning, and the people were fantastic. Here's hoping they invite us back! Ep.230 Carl E. Hazlewood (b. 1951) was born in Guyana, South America. Parallel to his studio practice, Hazlewood co-founded Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, NJ in 1983. Steeped in modest materials, such as polyester, push pins, map pins and metallic string, form is foregrounded and the slippage between drawing, painting and sculpture places his work in a space that challenges the conventions of each medium, and forces the viewer to experience form on its own terms. Hazlewood explains, “Like a sculptor, I work to find 'shapes' and 'volumes', implied or actual. And like painting, the layering becomes an intuitive search for textures, color and form…I define edges, where things begin and end, where they may find relationships and multiple transitions against or into each other. I think of this as 'drawing' the accumulation of parts into active and resonant connections. Then those 'active' parts are pinned into a final configuration, something that feels properly 'evocative' yet stable as plastic form.” Solo exhibitions of his work include BlackHead Anansi: Constellations at Charlotte and Philip Hanes Gallery, Wake Forest University, South Carolina (2023); Racing Thoughts-Fever Dreaming at Art Basel Miami Beach (2022); and BlackHead Lyricism at Welancora Gallery (2022). Hazlewood has been the recipient of fellowships at the MacDowell organization (2023, 2015); the Brown Foundation at the Dora Maar House, Ménerbes, France (2018); and the Bogliasco Foundation, Italy (2018). His fifty-two-foot-tall wall work, TRAVELER (2017), was commissioned by the Knockdown Center, Queens. In a world filled with both enormous wealth and pockets of great devastation, how should the well-off respond to the world's needy? This is the urgent central question of Being Good in a World of Need (Oxford UP, 2024). Larry S. Temkin, one of the world's foremost ethicists, challenges common assumptions about philanthropy, his own prior beliefs, and the dominant philosophical positions of Peter Singer and Effective Altruism. Filled with keen analysis and insightful discussions of philosophy, current events, development economics, history, literature, and age-old wisdom, this book is a thorough and sobering exploration of the complicated ways that global aid may incentivize disastrous policies, reward corruption, and foster “brain drains” that hinder social and economic development. Using real-world examples and illuminating thought experiments, Temkin discusses ethical imperialism, humanitarian versus developmental aid, how charities ignore or coverup negative impacts, replicability and scaling-up problems, and the views of the renowned economists Angus Deaton and Jeffrey Sachs, all within the context of deeper philosophical issues of fairness, responsibility, and individual versus collective morality. At times both inspiring and profoundly disturbing, he presents the powerful argument that neglecting the needy is morally impermissible, even as he illustrates that the path towards helping others is often fraught with complex ethical and practical perils. Steeped in empathy, morality, pathos, and humanity, this is an engaging and eye-opening text for any reader who shares an intense concern for helping others in need. Larry S. Temkin is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Rutgers. He graduated number one from the University of Wisconsin/Madison before pursuing graduate work at Oxford and earning his PhD from Princeton. He is the author of Inequality, hailed as "one of the [20th century's] most important contributions to analytical political philosophy" and of Rethinking the Good, described as a "tour de force" and "a genuinely awe-inspiring achievement." Temkin's approach to equality has been adopted by the World Health Organization. An award-winning teacher, he has received fellowships from Harvard, All Souls College and Corpus Christi College at Oxford, the National Institutes of Health, the Australian National University, the National Humanities Center, the Danforth Foundation, and Princeton. Justin Kuritzkes is the very talented writer behind Challengers, the Luca Guadagnino love triangle topping all sorts of end-of-year lists right now. The film is a tennis drama that declared game-set-and-match with critics and audiences alike on release in April, becoming a pop culture sensation in ways usually reserved for franchise films. Steeped in the messy wants and desires of three complicated characters, it's the sort of film that doesn't often dominate discourse. But that didn't stop Challengers becoming a phenomenon whose influence altered fashion, music, memes and more in 2024.Which for most writers would be enough achievement for one year thank you very much. But Justin's 2024 didn't end there. Queer – also directed by Guadagnino – is a William Burroughs adaptation that hit cinemas this month. The film stars Daniel Craig as William Lee – an American expatriate living in 1950s Mexico City who becomes obsessed with a younger man and goes on a quest into the jungle in search of unlocking drug-induced telepathic communication. Both films bear the hallmarks of a storyteller insistent upon bringing deeply nuanced explorations of flawed people searching for connection into multiplexes. In the double-bill episode you're about to hear, breaking down in spoiler-filled detail both acclaimed films, we discuss the overlaps between Challengers' carnal chaos and Charli XCX's Brat Summer, and what both say about this moment in the culture. We get into the tragic real-life death of Burroughs' partner, killed by the famed author in an supposed accidental shooting, that lends uncomfortable context to the story of Queer (and that Justin threaded into the movie). And you'll also hear his thoughts on whether both of these films could be a bellwether moment for movies. In a year that saw franchise after franchise struggle for critical applause and box office might, does the success of a movie like Challengers suggest that an appetite might be growing again for original stories? Now there's an exciting thought to carry into 2025.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. We are back with our good friend Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Since the last time we interviewed Kenny, he has released a follow up album to "Dirt On My Diamonds, Vol 1" iornically titled, "Dirt On My Diamonds, Vol 2". In addition to the new album, we talk about Kenny's experience actually playing Jimi Hendrix's "Woodstock" guitar and his upcoming tour, plus 2 new albums set to release in 2025. Kenny is a five-time-Grammy-nominated guitarist. The new album was recorded at the Legendary Fame Stuios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This project chronicles Shepherd's journey of musical evolution, touching on stories of loss, redemption, and memorable melodies. All crafted by an elite team of songwriters. Born in Louisiana, in 1977, Shepherd's own life has never followed the script. Steeped in classic blues and rock 'n' roll from an early age by his dad - a respected Lousiana radio personality and promoter - Kenny soon reached for his first Fender stratocaster and found he didn't require lessons to make it cry and wail. Long before Warner Brothers subsidairy Giant Records offered a deal, Shepherd had toured in clubs which he was too young to drink in. Please also check out our precious KWS interview released: October 7, 2023.
Dan sits down with pianist/composer/producer Corey Bernhard (currently a member of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert house band) about his journey from Boston to Philadelphia, and all the points in between. Steeped in the jazz and experimental scenes in Boston and New York, Corey landed in Philadelphia and founded Killiam Shakespeare, a beloved Philly insturmental hip-hop group. he's played with acts like Bilal, Snarky Puppy, Ed Sheeran, Ariana grande, Bootsy Collins, and so many more. Corey also gets into his upcoming LP, 'A Blessed Leap into Eternity', available January 24th (check out the pre-release singles), and how working with Michael Cummings (Trap Rabbit, Sun Ra Arkestra, Sophie Coran) was an amazing collaboration of creativity, experimentation, and patience.
Send us a textI am so excited for our THIRD annual Christmas Réveillon & Saint Nicholas show! When I moved to New Orleans almost 25 years ago from South Mississippi, my mind was blown to see how fancy and special these dinners were during December. Beautifully curated dishes that correspond with the vibes of the winter months set with a gorgeous Christmasy backdrop made the most perfect meal for me and Douglas. It was so nice that I brought my mama the following year. Come to find out, these fancy dinners are all about preserving the rich history behind the beginning of the "Réveillon feast. The Réveillon tradition is most commonly enjoyed by local families and/or friends gathered around a large table in an old French Quarter restaurant or reserving one of the small private dining rooms they offer. We have entered a new era Societal institutions, systems, and structures as we know them, are crumbling We need the world's next leaders to recreate, and rebuild A new, more welcoming world One we have never seen before One that is arriving From death, comes birth From labor pain, comes life From nothing, comes everything These leaders will be those who have always thought differently — By design, or even no choice of their own: The visionaries, Born to dream of and see in their mind's eye all that is possible The entrepreneurs, Wired to create innovation and make the impossible real The immigrants, Steeped in experiencing different cultures, languages, and perspectives, all at the same time Who know deeply, that there cannot be just one way This is the moment of our lifetime This is when heroes are created We face hate, fear, and terror Human rights abuses at massive scale Families and hearts, ripped apart Destruction, The fall of Rome. We also, have the opportunity to reimagine. Rebirth. Rebuild. Renaissance. But first, A revolution. Through resistance. Activism. Actively answering a call to action. Through community, Choosing JOY, Ruling, collectively, With shared purpose, in harmony Together, our power will always be stronger Saying NO Claiming equal rights for ALL Fighting for each other, Person by person. There's no more room for waiting No one is coming We must envision, demand, create freedom, justice, and equality With shared purpose, Collaboration, And in unity As an orchestra, A SYMPHONY. Together, translating vision into reality Leveraging new technology, Innovation, And equal rights, legally Coming together Protecting our planet, Our neighbors Building a welcoming community From dusk comes dawn From death comes rebirth From nothing comes everything From here, comes SYNARCHY -- Free Community Groups: For CHANGEMAKER entrepreneurs: https://www.internationalempowerment.com/freegroup For IMMIGRANTS: https://immigrantfinance.com/community

On April 3, 2011, a cemetery worker in South Africa stumbled upon an outrageously gruesome scene: large quantities of fresh blood and drag marks leading to a pair of blood-soaked jeans, and beneath that, a naked young adult male, butchered, eviscerated, and dismembered, barely recognizable as human. Cold as ice, this young man had been brutally stabbed and skinned; and when his remains were uncovered, they were missing numerous body parts, including his head. This is the absolutely devastating case of Michael Van Eck, who was murdered and flayed by a depraved woman posing as a romantic interest, Chané van Heerden (known as "The Female Ed Gein"), and her disturbed boyfriend, Maartens van der Merwe. Steeped in pseudo-occult practices and sadistic ritualistic behavior, this savage case is regarded as one of the most heinous murders in South African history. Please listen with caution.
