The Irish luck seems to be siding with the All Blacks who managed to score yet another weekend victory at Eden Park. In their first game of the year at the venue, they defeated Ireland 42-19 - quickly dissipating any fears of breaking their Eden Park wining streak. Ireland and New Zealand sports writers Cian Tracey and Hamish Bidwell spoke to Morning Report.
On the show today, we've been talking about your relationship with rugby. Hamish Bidwell has been writing about rugby for years now, he joins the show to chat about New Zealands relationship with rugby, and if it's still the same as it once was.
Athletes and social media. It's a combination giving sports fans increasingly more access to - and information about - the world's best sports people. It's also a combination that comes with pitfalls - as England cricketer Ollie Robinson has very acutely discovered. Robinson has been suspended from the England team - and an investigation is underway - after the revelation of racists and sexist tweets he made eight years ago. Join RNZ Sport's Clay Wilson on Extra Time as he's joined by Stuff sport's Zoe George and RNZ sport columnist Hamish Bidwell to discuss the situation, the punishment and the lessons for sportspeople when it comes to social media. We also get the thoughts of AUT senior marketing lecturer Dr Jessica Vredenburg. Plus we hear from rowing great Mahe Drysdale about his retirement from the sport.

Are sports journalists in New Zealand too worried about staying onside with high-profile sports people? This week on RNZs Extra Time, Bridget Tunnicliffe poses the question to Stuff sports journalist Paul Cully, sports commentator Hamish Bidwell and RNZ sports reporter Joe Porter. We discuss the relationship between the media and well known sportspeople in New Zealand in light of a Stuff article that heard from the neighbours of one-test All Black Josh Ioane. Residents said the Dunedin property of Ioane had turned into a notorious "party house" where noisy, alcohol-fuelled gatherings frequently happened at weekends. The story came after the news that Ioane and five other players were stood down by the Highlanders after they went drinking following their round five loss to the Hurricanes. But some people didn't like the story including Hurricanes captain Ardie Savea. How should sports journalists approach reporting when it emerges that elite athletes have been behaving badly? Also, this week we hear from Australian cricket great Joanne Broadbent, who now coaches the Northern Districts, about the gulf between Australia and New Zealand in the women's game.

The White Ferns have notched a morale-boosting - and thrilling - win over Australia in the second women's cricket T20 in Napier. Tuesday's result came down to the final ball, when a french cut from Maddy Green raced away for four to seal a four-wicket win. It levels the three-match series at 1-1 heading into Thursday's decider at Eden Park. Sports commentator Hamish Bidwell spoke to Corin Dann.
They've been there before and they know what to expect, but how will the Warriors cope with another NRL season based in Australia. Many players struggled without their families in 2020, it cost coach Stephen Kearney his job and they finished tenth. New coach Nathan Brown has bolstered his squad but the club's coffers certainly won't be bolstered by another year with no home games. Join Barry Guy on Extra Time as he and Hamish Bidwell are joined by former Warriors coach Frank Endacott to discuss the clubs prospects. Former cricket international Peter McGlashan also has his thoughts on the Blacks Caps in 2021, their pending World Test Championship Final and the desire to be among those to be vaccinated first. Extra Time is brought to you by RNZ, Stuff and LockerRoom.

In contrast the White Ferns have a battle on their hands to fight their way back into their one-day series against England after a heavy defeat in the opening game, can the New Zealand women compete with the World Champions or is the gap to the likes of England and Australia growing bigger? Super Rugby Aotearoa kicks off this weekend, can anyone stop the Crusaders from marching to a fifth straight title? And Joseph Parker gets back in the boxing ring with Junior Fa, what implications would a win or loss have for both fighters? Join Joe Porter on RNZ's Extra Time as we discuss the sporting week with sports writer Hamish Bidwell and journalists Barry Guy and Felicity Reid.

Is Super Rugby in fact the best way forward for Pasifika rugby? Saturday's match between the Maori All Blacks and Moana Pasifika in Hamilton essentially heralds Moana Pasifika's emergence as a Super Rugby side. They along with a Fiji based team are set to join the Super Rugby competition from 2022. Join Joe Porter on RNZ's Extra Time as he talks to Pacific Rugby Players boss Aayden Clarke, Samoa women's coach Ramsey Tomokino and RNZ sports writer Hamish Bidwell. Clarke believes two Super Rugby teams means more opportunity for Pacific Island players, which the world owes them. But Bidwell isn't convinced it will translate to improved performances by Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji and wants those unions to do a better job of organising their sport. We also hear from New Zealand squash star Joelle King, who's staying put in the UK in the hope she gets some tournament play. And she talks about undergoing a barrage of Covid testing.

After a historic loss to Argentina, the All Blacks came back from the brink to thump the Pumas in the final game of a difficult year. After successive losses to the South Americans and the Wallabies, a chastened New Zealand team thundered to a 38-nil victory. It means Ian Foster's team won three of their six Tests in this Covid-19-affected year. They also suffered those twin defeats and played out a draw with Australia. Rugby analyst Hamish Bidwell speaks to Corin Dann.

An extraordinary loss to the Pumas in Sydney has sent the All Blacks deep into introspection mode and sparked jubilation for sports followers in Argentina. New Zealand coach Ian Foster's position is suddenly under the blowtorch after suffering two straight defeats - this one coming despite fielding his strongest team against a Pumas side who hadn't played for more than a year. The 25-15 outcome has been described as one of test rugby's biggest boilovers and arguably the greatest day in the Pumas history. Argentina correspondent Frankie Deges and New Zealand rugby analyst Hamish Bidwell speak to Susie Ferguson.
Israel Adesanya retained his UFC world middleweight title last week and is set to become one of the biggest names in the sport. Mixed Martial Arts continues to grow as a global sport and has a strong following. But because it's a violent sport, should it get the promotion that it does? Medical professionals are against it. Is New Zealand Rugby to blame for the situation it now finds itself in? Join Barry Guy on RNZ's Extra Time as he, Hamish Bidwell, Ashley Stanley and Joe Porter discuss the pros and cons of MMA fighting and the saga that is the Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks will play test match rugby this year afterall. Two Bledisloe Cup tests against Wallabies have been confirmed for Wellington and Auckland and the side will then head to Australia for the rugby championship...although that seems to be up in the air with doubts over whether South Africa and Argentina will play.
