Oh my! What a turnaround. This morning the White Ferns beat the West Indies to secure their place in the ICC Womens T20 World Cup final. South Africa awaits in a final bereft of the two biggest teams in women's cricket, the almost peerless Australians and the other perpetual thorn in the side of the Kiwis, England. This victory represents a changing of the guard at the pointed end of the women's game here. The transfer of power from the old school to the next generation looked to be a step too far for the side, who had relied on the immense talent of Devine, Bates, and Kerr for some time. This is not to dismiss the contribution of Tahuhu, one of the better stories of redemption in the team, nor the efforts of Green, Halliday, etc. The next tier of players though, had not shown the way forward, and the team had been staggering in transition. It took the World Cup for previous efforts to crystalize, with the likes of Eden Carson and Georgia Plimmer paying back the faith shown in them. This morning's game was a ripper but won't mean much if the title isn't secured on Monday. A note about Suzie Bates. She took the ball for the final over, after not bowling a ball in the tournament to date – a huge punt, but one that paid dividends as she showed that the veterans are far from a spent force.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To talk us through the upcoming game we are joined by Ebony Rainford-Brent MBE. Ebony is a World Cup-winning cricketer, now turned presenter and pundit. We begin by looking at the grassroots game which is growing at a fast rate. We hear from girls at Carlton Cricket Club about why they love the sport, also from 16-year-old Honor Black who's clothing company, Maiden, designs kit specifically for girls. We also hear again from Ebony Rainford-Brent. Ebony was the first black woman to play cricket for England and founded the African-Caribbean Engagement Programme, ACE, which creates opportunities for young cricketers to take up the game. Nuala gets a tour around the 'Home of Cricket', and the spots of most significance to women's history at Lord's. Woman's Hour also looks at the situation for women's cricket in 2024. How far has the sport come and what is left to do? Beth Barrett-Wild is Director of the Women's Professional Game at the England and Wales Cricket Board and joins Nuala live. They will discuss the many successes in the women's game but also a damning report which found that women were treated as ‘second class citizens' in cricket and recommended that the ECB strive to ensure equal pay on average at domestic level by 2029 and at international level by 2030.Ahead of England's match against New Zealand in the culmination of the five-match T20 International series, New Zealand's star player and former captain Suzie Bates joins Nuala to look ahead to the game and discuss women's cricket in NZ. The White Ferns will face England for the bronze medal after taking Australia to the final over but losing by five wickets at Edgbaston tonight. It was a much more creditable performance from New Zealand after they had been crushed by the hosts in their final group game, a result that set up a semifinal against the tournament's firm favourites. But Australia never seriously looked like ceding their chance to play for gold, now set to do so against India tomorrow, while the White Ferns have 13 hours to prepare for a clash with a side who restricted them to 71-9 two days ago. They will at least take heart from pushing the best team in the world tonight, especially since the bowling effort was hindered by several missed opportunities. Sophie Devine top scored with 53 from 48 balls while Lea Tahuhu proved the folly of initially omitting her from this squad - and excluding her from the national contract list - by taking 3-20 from four overs. It wasn't quite enough, however, as Australia paced their chase well enough to survive a few late setbacks, reaching their target with three balls to spare. Considering the White Ferns began their innings on the verge of calamity, and considering how poorly they had batted two days ago, 144-7 represented an admirable - if not defendable - total. After being sent in and seeing Suzie Bates chop on for a first-ball duck, Georgia Plimmer could hardly have asked for more difficult circumstances in which to make her maiden appearance. And the 18-year-old almost suffered a disastrous debut, being given out the very next delivery after being rapped on the pad before surviving on review. That reversal was greeted with a huge cheer from the crowd, perhaps not wanting such a fate to befall a teenager, perhaps merely wanting New Zealand to make a match of it. That's what the White Ferns set about doing, with Plimmer stroking a few morale-boosting boundaries before falling for 17. Devine and Amelia Kerr then laid the platform for New Zealand to post a target that would at least take some chasing, sharing in a 73-run stand from 64 balls. The skipper looked in position to launch when her side reached 101-2 at the end of the 15th over, but after pulling brilliantly for six to bring up her 50, she holed out two balls later. Kerr (40 from 36) would depart in similar fashion, showing fine touch to guide one to the third-man boundary before top-edging a slog sweep next ball, and that's when the runs dried up. The promotion of Tahuhu didn't work - bowled for three to drop her T20I average below 10 - and only a couple of confident drives from Brooke Halliday lifted the total above 140.Back in her primary role, Tahuhu immediately set about making that total more challenging. With her first delivery, the veteran had Alyssa Healy strangled down the leg side for a brisk 14, and the next ball Kerr spilled a difficult chance at backward point to snare the prized scalp of Meg Lanning. Tahuhu's second over started with another drop, as Izzy Gaze failed to glove Beth Mooney's thick edge, before Lanning pulled the following ball over the midwicket boundary. But Tahuhu would have the last laugh, bowling out the world's No 1 batter with a brilliant yorker to reduce Australia to 28-2. Unfortunately for the White Ferns' chances, the worst drop was still to come, Hannah Rowe contriving to grass a simple chance at mid off from Tahlia McGrath. Australia were well in control at 75-2 after 10 overs and, although Kerr ran out McGrath before Tahuhu had Mooney caught in the deep, the current run rate rarely threatened to fall below the required. Gaze missing two good stumping chances didn't help, but with Australia needing 34 runs from the final five overs, they were always in command and eventually advanced. - by Kris Shannon, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Two sports will debut at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham - Women's T20 cricket and 3x3 basketball. One New Zealand athlete - dual international Suzie Bates - knows a bit about both. Bates is representing the White Ferns in the milestone event for cricket but in 2008 she was playing at the Olympics with the Tall Ferns. With a few links to the 3x3 squads in Birmingham, Bates is taking a keen interest on what is happening on the courts three kilometres away from the Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Bates, who is the longest-serving member of the New Zealand cricket team at the Games, can see some links between these two additions to the Commonwealth Games schedule and for the women competing. For Bates and the new-look White Ferns side the T20 matches in Birmingham will be the first competitive games New Zealand has played since the home world cup. Coach Ben Sawyer has been in the job eight weeks and Bates is clear about what needs to happen on the cricket pitch during a big moment for the both sport and the New Zealand team. The White Ferns first game is against South Africa is on Saturday - the same day the new Zealand men's and women's 3x3 basketball teams open their campaigns against England.

Welcome back to the Inside Edge Podcast with Bhavi Devchand, this is the show that turns the journeys of some of leading coaches, athletes and leaders into actionable lessons you can implement into your own lives.  Now for our guest today featuring one of the all-time greats - Suzie Bates. A staggering 288 caps for New Zealand, over 8000 international runs to go alongside 125 international wickets. She is a highly sought after cricketer on the domestic T20 scene, and all of this doesn't even include being an Olympian in Basketball!Suzie and I first met when she came over to play for WA under well known coach, Steve Jenkin. She immediately struck me as self-assured, confident and very successful. As with most of the stories we've had on the show, we soon find out this was not the case at all. Suzie had many struggles with self-doubt, body image, performance anxiety and fear of others opinions.  She has since been on a remarkable journey where she now talks openly about the importance of owning who you are and then having the courage to display that version of yourself to those around you, especially when you're not feeling great. So many of us want to withdraw when struggling as it can be a lot easier. However, as Suzie mentions, the depth of connection that we all crave is done through being brave and opening up to the people close to us.  We are all craving the need to belong and connect, however there is a specific type of connection termed "high-quality connection" by psychologist Dr. Scott Barry Kaufmann. The difference between the general feeling of connection and the depth of high quality connection comes down to the ability to let yourself be seen at the most authentic level, and then having someone else respond empathetically to make you feel safe and worthy despite your imperfections. One of the great distractions occurs when we think we can get to this depth of connection through external achievements, looking good to others and being superior to them. However these are all temporary states that are ultimately out of our control. Getting sucked into this world of chasing the next goal post, only results in an unhealthy cycle that keeps our stress response chronically activated. Something special happens within each of us when we are vulnerable and experience moments of high quality connection: Our stress response is downregulated as our calm and connect system comes alive. On a biological level, we see an increase in oxytocin, which is a neurotransmitter commonly known as the love hormone, that increases our willingness to trust and cooperate with others. The strength of our vagus nerve increases, resulting in an increased ability to adapt to stress phsycially and mentally. This parasympathetic response also soothes a racing heart and opens up more activity in our frontal cortex allowing us to make rational decisions under pressure. From a leadership point of view - this is the science behind unlocking performance by allowing each individual to be themselves. It is a hot topic at the moment, empathy and a human-first approach. And for good reason. You can have the perfect structure and tick all the boxes physically, However, if you want to unlock true performance, you have to start with connection. The only way to get to this level of connection is by shedding the masks we wear. They are usually there to protect us from rejection, however the irony is that they serve as a barrier to the depth of connection. The first step of removing the masks is to embrace our imperfections. And Suzie's story is a wonderful example of how she has done this to find contentment and plenty of runs on the other side of it. Listen above as White Ferns player Sophie Devine speaks to D'Arcy and Goran following their 33 run loss to Australia in the World T20.The White Ferns are dreaming of a World Cup miracle, but they're about to be woken up.A 33-run defeat to Australia in their second game of the Twenty20 Women's Cricket World Cup has dropped the White Ferns to 0-2, and left them requiring a series of outcomes ranging from "Plausible" to "Preposterous" to have any hope of qualifying for the semifinals. What needs to happen for the Ferns to make the semifinals? Well, a lot:• Ireland need to beat India on Friday morning• Australia need to beat India on Sunday morning• The Ferns need to beat both Pakistan and Ireland• The Ferns need to end up with a higher net run rate than IndiaIn reality though, you could stop hypothesising after the first proviso.Remember Ireland? They were the team who the Ferns beat by 305, 306, and 347 runs in three ODIs earlier this year, and have been swatted by Australia (by nine wickets) and Pakistan (by 38 runs) so far in the World T20.So, yeah, the White Ferns are out of the World Cup, and worse than that - set for their worst result in the history of the tournament.Only once before have the Ferns not made the semifinals, and in that year – 2014 – they won three of four games, only to miss out on the semis due to net run rate. This time, they'll go no better than 2-2, and they can't have any complaints, after Australia proved why they are the prohibitive favourites to win the whole shebang.Batting first, Australia's target of 154 didn't seem overwhelming; in fact it appeared moderately hopeful for the White Ferns, after they had pegged their rivals back from a dominant position at 71-0 through eight overs. The spin of Leigh Kasperek (3-25) did most of the damage, but while some elements of a moral victory had been accomplished, an actual victory was still going to prove difficult on the Guyana wicket against a classy Australian attack. So it proved as the Ferns' hopes and dreams dissipated within three overs. Back to the pavilion went Anna Peterson, Sophie Devine and Amy Satterthwaite, and at 13-3, their World Cup was realistically over.Suzie Bates, as she has so many times before, gave the Ferns some hope, hitting 44 from 41 balls and putting on 62 for the fourth wicket with Katey Martin, but the required run rate was always rising, and once Martin fell, so did the rest of the Ferns. From 75-3, the Ferns were bowled out for 120; what will be a limp end to a tournament which had the potential to springboard the White Ferns to greater relevancy in the New Zealand sporting landscape.Admittedly, their chance of creating mass interest back home wasn't helped by a front-loaded schedule. Had their upcoming games – and likely victories - against Pakistan and Ireland appeared earlier in the schedule, the White Ferns could have slowly built up support and interest, culminating in plenty of intrigue for their decisive showdowns against India and Australia.Instead, the reverse happened. With the Ferns 0-2 and likely eliminated from the tournament before their clash with Pakistan on Friday morning, the remaining two games are set to go by without fanfare – denying a rising group of players a superb chance to hit the spotlight.Still, there's an easy solution to that – win games. The White Ferns haven't, and instead of hitting the spotlight, their Cup campaign faces a gloomy conclusion.

A 77-run knock from Suzie Bates wasn't enough to steer the White Ferns to victory in the second of three Twenty20s against Australia in Brisbane.Australia claimed a six-wicket win, reaching the 146-run target set by the White Ferns with nine balls to spare.Opening the batting for the New Zealand side, Bates hit 11 fours and sent two over the ropes on her way to a game high score, however she got little support from her teammates. Of the 10 White Ferns to have a stint at the crease, only Bates, captain Amy Satterthwaite (27) and Maddy Green (15) were able to score in double figures."She produced an innings we'd want her to play every day if she could," Satterthwaite said of Bates' knock. "The disappointing thing is that we weren't able to support her enough from the other end."Moving forward, I think we've got to keep looking at ways the new bats coming in can look to create a strike rate from ball one and look to find the boundaries early."Chasing 146 for victory, Australian opener Alyssa Healy led the charge with the bat, scoring 57 from 41 deliveries to set her side's innings up, and Elyse Villani's unbeaten 46 steered the hosts home. The sides will meet again on Friday night in Canberra for the third and final match of the series.LISTEN TO SUZIE BATES TALK WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVE

LISTEN TO HAIDEE TIFFEN TALK WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVEAmy Satterthwaite won't be short on spin bowling options as she embarks on her first assignment as new White Ferns captain this month.New Zealand has named a 13-strong squad for three T20s in Australia, starting at the end of this month, and 15 players for the women's world T20 in the West Indies in November. There are five spin options in Australia, with a sixth, Anna Peterson added for the world tournament.''We are blessed with a group of versatile cricketers and know that spin should play a large part in the Caribbean, especially with the slower nature of the pitches over there,'' White Ferns coach Haidee Tiffen said.Peterson and Hannah Rowe are the additions for the world tournament, while the Australian games will be played in Sydney on September 29, Brisbane on October 1 and Canberra on October 5.Tiffen liked the good mix of youth and experience in the groups.Satterthwaite has replaced Suzie Bates as skipper, Bates standing down last week.''Amy is a highly experienced cricketer and she has taken the captaincy in her stride,'' Tiffen said. The women's world T20 starts on November 9.New Zealand squad for world T20: Amy Satterthwaite (c), Suzie Bates, Bernadine Bezuidenhout, Sophie Devine, Kate Ebrahim, Maddy Green, Holly Huddleston, Hayley Jensen, Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, Katey Martin, Anna Peterson, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu, Jess Watkin.New Zealand squad to play Australia in three T20 internationals at the end of this month:Amy Satterthwaite (c), Suzie Bates, Bernadine Bezuidenhout, Sophie Devine, Kate Ebrahim, Maddy Green, Holly Huddleston, Hayley Jensen, Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, Katey Martin, Lea Tahuhu, Jess Watkin.

Suzie Bates is relinquishing the leadership reins at the White Ferns to focus on her game. She's stood down as captain of the New Zealand women's cricket team, after almost seven years in the role.Bates says the captaincy initially helped her perform, but in the last 12 to 18 months with the extra cricket she's played, it's weighed heavily."I think it has affected my performances in the long run, especially at the end of season when perhaps I've been more fatigued."Bates says she believed her side was capable of winning each world cup she attended as captain."The 2013 World Cup India, where were playing so well but lost to the West Indies in the finals hit a few of us pretty hard, and then to not even make the semi finals at the World Cup in England."Bates told D'Arcy and Goran that, despite not always agreeing with coach Haidee Tiffen, that wasn't why she stood down. Amy Satterthwaite has been appointed the new White Ferns captain, having been part of the leadership team for several years."Even just captaining at the Canterbury level, and fortunate enough last year to captain the Melbourne Renegades at the Women's Big Bash, so I've had some leadership opportunities outside of this, and hopefully that will help me."Satterthwaite's first assignment in charge will be the three match Twenty20 international series against Australia, starting in Sydney at the end of the month.LISTEN TO SUZIE BATES TALKS WITH D'ARCY AND GORAN ABOVE
