New Zealand's new bill is finding support from a women's sport advocacy group. The new bill wants to codify sex-based language, defining a woman as an “adult human biological female” and a man as an “adult human biological male”. It comes as Britain's Highest Court ruled that only biological women —not trans women— meet a definition of a woman under equity laws. Save Women's Sport Australasia NZ Spokeswoman Ro Edge told Francesca Rudkin the bill is a protection for the sex-based rights of women. She says all it does is reinforce the urgent need for the likes of Sport New Zealand to prioritise and protect safety and fairness for biological women. Edge says they play sports with their bodies, not their identities. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcoming Susan Glasgow, CEO of Variety New Zealand, to Purposely where she shares her charity's mission to lift children out of poverty and discusses her journey from a fundraiser to the leader of a nonprofit organisation. We will also delve into the captivating origin story of the Variety movement, tracing its beginnings in early 1900s Pittsburgh, USA, to its current role in making a positive impact on young lives globally. Variety New Zealand's vision is clear: all children in Aotearoa should realise their hopes and dreams. With a purpose to raise vital funds to tackle child poverty and create opportunities for children to thrive, Variety has become a cornerstone of support for disadvantaged youth in New Zealand. Variety's roots trace back to 1927 when a group of actors in Pittsburgh took in a child left on their theatre doorstep. This act of kindness sparked the creation of the Variety Club, which soon began fundraising for children in need. Today, Variety operates as a global movement, with each country adapting to local needs while sharing a common goal of supporting disadvantaged children. Established about 35 years ago, Variety New Zealand has evolved from event-based fundraising to a more focused approach. Their flagship programme, Kiwi Kid Sponsorship, matches donors with children living in poverty, providing crucial support where it's needed most. Susan Glasgow, who joined as CEO in 2020, reveals shocking statistics about child poverty in New Zealand: 143,700 children live in poverty (as of June 2023); 1 in 6 kids in New Zealand will suffer food insecurity at some point in their childhood; and 1 in 10 children in the poorest communities doesn't have a bed of their own. Variety New Zealand works closely with initiatives like Healthy Homes, providing beds for children who would otherwise sleep on floors or sofas. They also partner with Sport New Zealand to break down financial barriers preventing children from participating in sports and recreational activities. Glasgow emphasises the resilience and resourcefulness of families living in poverty, challenging the stigma often associated with seeking help. "People who are putting their hands up to ask for help are the ones who are putting their children first," she states. The Kiwi Kid Sponsorship programme has shown significant results. Children sponsored through Variety for four years' experience about 50% less material hardship compared to those on the waitlist. This improvement spans various aspects of life, from school essentials to food security and housing stability. Since Glasgow joined Variety in 2020, the waitlist for sponsorship has grown from 300 to 3,000 children. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic challenges have exacerbated the need, pushing more families into hardship. Despite these challenges, Variety New Zealand raised over £10 million last year, distributing about £6 million in grants. However, the need continues to outpace available resources. As Variety New Zealand continues its vital work, Glasgow and her team remain committed to raising awareness about child poverty and the transformative power of sponsorship. They strive to bridge the gap between those who have and those who have less, ensuring every child in New Zealand can reach their full potential. Susan Glasgow's journey to becoming CEO of Variety New Zealand is a testament to the power of diverse experiences. With a background in performing arts and literature, Glasgow spent 12 years in the UK, where she transitioned into fundraising at Westminster School. Returning to New Zealand in 2007, she applied her expertise at the University of Auckland Business School before joining Variety in 2020. Her role as CEO combines her fundraising acumen with her passion for helping children access opportunities, a cause she had personally supported as a Variety Kiwi Kid sponsor since 2016. Chris Bishop: Sports Minister on the open letter regarding transgender inclusion in sport

Minister for Sport and Recreation Chris Bishop says he is considering updating the guiding principles for transgender athletes participating in sports, after more than 50 Olympians and high-profile sports identities signed a letter challenging the Government to ban male advantage from women's sports. The group, including gold medal winners Barbara Kendall and Joseph Sullivan, accuses Sport New Zealand's guidelines of disregarding the rights of female athletes. It argues the guidelines allow males who identify as female to compete in women's sports without any explanation or transition. They believe that accepting self-identification as the sole criterion for inclusion goes against scientific evidence and disrespects female athletes. Yesterday, Bishop was presented the letter by former Olympic cyclist Gary Anderson, professional ironman athlete Candice Riley, and Save Women's Sport Australasia co-founder Ro Edge. “I think they make some fair points and we are considering updating the guidelines,” Bishop told the Mike Hosking Breakfast this morning. “The major point I think they make which I think has some merit to it is that the guidelines don't say anything at the moment about fairness. “It's a document-based, all-around inclusion, and that's really important because we want everyone, no matter their gender or how they identify to be able to participate in community sport – that is really important. We've also got to get the balance right between making sure that people feel like they can participate but also that there's fairness in the sports and safety for people participating as well. “I think the document could be updated to better reflect what I think the community expects from that so just having to think about that and once we've got a position on that, we'll we'll take it forward.” In June, the Herald revealed that following a comprehensive survey of 63 taxpayer-funded New Zealand national sports, 18 (29 per cent) of sporting codes have a transgender inclusion policy in place. Of those, 11 used Sport NZ's guidance to develop their policy. Some 45 (71 per cent) organisations did not have a policy, but 21 of those were developing one. At the recreational level, boxing and Triathlon NZ have open categories in which anyone, including transgender people, can participate. Setting age and stage conditions for the inclusion of transgender people in the gender they identify with is another approach. NZ Rugby League has a policy that at age 13 and over participants must compete in the gender they are assigned at birth. Other sports such as netball require participants, at certain levels, to have either undertaken hormone therapy, testosterone levels below a stated level, or provide a document confirming their legal gender. Bishop emphasised the guidelines were simply that and weren't mandatory. “Some sports are doing this quite well and are grappling with it. Others are sort of yet to kind of turn their mind to it, particularly comprehensively, and the guidelines will help in doing that,” he told Hosking. “They're just, it's meant to be just helpful guidance for sports to use as they navigate through this issue.” Asked whether Sport NZ shared Bishop's views, the minister told Hosking it was a government department that reported to him and was required to give effect to government policy – if he asks them to update the guidelines, they will have to. Over 50 high-profile sporting identities and former Olympians have signed an open letter urging the Government to rethink the guiding principles for transgender athletes participating in sports. The letter claims Sport New Zealand's guidelines disregard the rights of female athletes and go against scientific evidence. Former Olympian Dave Gerrard says allowing athletes to compete under self-identification ignores the science - and dismisses female athletes. "I'm not, for one moment, trying to exclude transgender individuals from participating - I'm just trying to get some logic to this. How far do you allow somebody to go?" Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.Dave's Affiliate Link - Support our show by clicking the link belowUS Audible LinkCanadian Audible LinkUK Audible LinkSupport the show!...

There is a group called "Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington".  That proves, apart from anything, there is clearly a group set up for everything and a weird name is no barrier to existence. They have concerns over the councils charging for facilities. Their complaint appears to be, the more expensive you make sport, the less sport people will do, which appears to make perfect sense. The deal in Wellington is the council charges 15 percent of the cost of providing sports fields and the ratepayer picks up the rest. On the surface seems perfectly fair, if not a little in favour of the sports. Not that Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington sees it that way.We also know from Sport New Zealand that weekly sport participation is down 7 percent. So, if you tie those two things together, you can see the issue. But, my suspicion is we are missing a couple of key ingredients. And in looking to get the council to foot more of the bill and therefore make sport cheaper, we have fallen into that age old hole of looking for someone else to fix our problem. From my experience, and given I have five kids believe me I have a lot of it, cost isn't necessarily the barrier to organised sport, life is.When I played football for the Rangers in Christchurch, rugby for Shirley, league for Linwood, or tennis for Edgeware, I walked. I walked to practice, mainly walked to games, and the away games we used a parental car pool. But they were simpler times. They were times when we lived closer to the things we used. We don't do that anymore, not in the cities anyway. School finished at 3, you played a bit of sport, and you went home. These days the kilometres required to participate in sport are inhibitive. The distance to clubs and fields is vast. Pressure from other aspects of our lives, rightly or wrongly, has overtaken us.The ability to move in cities efficiently has gone and we have made the gathering of groups to kick a ball too hard, hence we don't bother.I doubt sport, per se, is down, just organised sport. Being able to go to the local tennis court, squash club or park is still real. But the time and energy for parents is often a bridge too far. School demands more, especially at the higher NCEA levels. At a certain age you realise you aren't going to the Olympics so you move on.There is a lot at play here; I've seen it over the past 15 years at our house.Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington might just be looking at the wrong person to blame.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Zealand Rugby has appointed the former Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy to its board. Dame Patsy joins respected rugby administrator Rowena Davenport as new NZR Board appointees. The move comes in the wake of the damning results of the Black Ferns cultural review. The nine-person board now has three female directors - still falling short of Sport New Zealand's 40 percent diversity threshold for boards. In a statement NZR board chair Stewart Mitchell said the organisation still had work to do around gender diversity in rugby governance. Davenport says NZR is moving in the right direction when it comes to diversity.
