Touted as one of the most beautiful places in the world, there really is something special about Banff. Combining the striking stature of the Rockies with the snug, quaint charms of small-town Canada, it's the sheer splendour of accessible and abundant wilderness that casts you under its spell. Just as visitors to Sedona routinely talk about “the healing energy” that seeps from its stones, Banff also brags about its revitalising powers. It's widely considered as a sacred place, ever since indigenous people were drawn to the region thousands of years ago, taking to the healing waters of the natural hot springs and gathering various plants for medicinal purposes. It was First Nations guides who introduced Europeans to the area in the 1800s, and by the 1880s the natural hot springs on Sulphur Mountain were a wildly popular Victorian tourist attraction. It was the railway that opened Banff's treasures to the world. Mercifully, the Canadian government had the vision and wisdom to safeguard nature's riches by creating Canada's first national park in 1885, Banff National Park. They run a very tight ship in this town. To live in Banff, you must be an eligible resident. This generally means your primary daily employment must be located within the Banff National Park boundaries. The permanent population is only 9000. There are no vacation homes. Buying property for holiday use or weekend getaways is strictly prohibited. Even if you own property, you must actively work in the park or rent it to someone who does. Similarly, residential property cannot be used for short-term rentals (like Airbnb) unless the property is owner-occupied and licensed specifically as a Bed and Breakfast. Perhaps some over-crowded but underpopulated New Zealand tourist towns should consider this model, like Tekapo. The main artery of Banff Ave is a swanky tourist mecca, lined with lodge-like hotels, many built in Rocky Mountain style, with the accent on lodgepole pines, limestone, and steeply pitched roofs. I love how all the side streets are named after local animals. I even saw roaming elk prancing down Elk Street. The best time to visit Banff depends on whether you snow-dappled vistas, wildflowers or larch season. I suggest the spring months are best, with show-mopped peaks and thinner crowds. Wildflower season runs from July to August, but it's chocka with visitors taking advantage of the warm weather for high-alpine hiking. “Larch madness” is a short, specific window from mid-September to early October, when the larch tree needles turn a brilliant gold. The beautiful natural display draws dense crowds to popular trails like Larch Valley. After alighting from two ravishing days aboard the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver, it fast became apparent that my short time in this mountain oasis would not be enough to do full justice to its surrounding wonders. But here's a round-up on some tried-and-true must dos. For the view of views, do not leave town before you have taken a ride to the rooftop of Sulphur Mountain, on the Banff Gondola. The eight-minute ride to the summit of 7,486-foot mountain delivers a horizon-wide alpine panorama. Six distinct mountain ranges unfurl their grandeur before you, along with the Bow River Valley and the town of Banff itself. Beyond the top station, the boardwalk trail climbs even higher, leading you to Sanson Peak. Alongside savouring the snow-flecked scenery in the heart of the Rockies, I was also intrigued by the remnants of the Cosmic Ray Station, perched on top of Sulphur Mountain. This throwback to the 1950s became Canada's most important cosmic ray observatory, contributing to our understanding of how the sun effects the earth's environment. Needless to say, even in summer the mountaintop temps can be chilly. If you need a warm-up, just below the gondola base station, Banff Upper Hot Springs will put some pep in your step. Discovered by Canada's First Nations people, they've been regarded as sacred waters for centuries, rich in minerals like sulfate, calcium, bicarbonate, magnesium and sodium. Give yourself a therapeutic soak in the toasty waters, that average 39C, gazing at the sprawling heft of Mount Rundle. Savour some solitude on an easy, in-town hike, just off the downtown thoroughfare of Banff Ave. The Bow River Trail follows the north shore, while the Bow Falls Trail hugs the south side. The south shore is particularly scenic if you head east to the Bow Falls Viewpoint. It's also a dreamy spot for a photo of the waterfall and the “Castle in the Rockies”, the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel. Waterfall hikes top the list of things to do in Banff any time of year. Johnston Canyon is a cracker, close to town and easy. The walkway is attached directly to the canyon walls. It takes you right to the thunderously noisy Lower Falls and then up to the taller Upper Falls. In winter, the canyon completely transforms as the waterfalls freeze into massive blue ice pillars. You'll need ice cleats to strike out on the ice walk. Good eats? In the heart of Banff town, in Bear St, Bison is the go-to for "Rocky Mountain comfort food," with an emphasis on slow cooking. As the name suggests, it's a great place to try bison dishes—bison tartar and slow-cooked braised bison short rib are signature dishes—but there's also Wild British Columbia halibut, wood-fired duck, and Alberta beef striploin. Sunday brunch buffet is a celebrated pastime at the Fairmont Banff Springs, the iconic “Castle in the Rockies.” The setting is postcard perfect - exactly why the Banff Springs Hotel was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway company in 1888 to woo the world to the rugged Rockies. Make a brunch booking at The Vermillion Room to nosh on signature dishes like smoked Wild Pacific salmon and slow-roasted Alberta beef. Be sure to add a side of maple brownies.Banff has a soft-spot for fondue, a hangover from the hordes of Swiss guides who were recruited over a century ago to spirit visitors through the Rockies. If you're up for fondue with a difference, head to the Grizzly House. Nearly 60 years old, it's a dining experience that's hands-on, unconventional, and uniquely Banff. Hot rock meat is served raw and cooked at your table. Alongside prime cuts of Alberta beef and fresh seafood, you'll find wild game and exotic meats including ostrich, elk, bison, frogs legs, alligator and rattlesnake. Like the classic Swiss cheese and chocolate fondues, they're all designed for sharing. Across the Banff area, a sequence of jewel-like lakes are the stars of the show, tinted a dazzling turquoise hue due to the presence of glacial flour (ground up rock particles). The dazzling Moraine Lake, Abraham Lake, Lake Minnewanka and Lake Louise are the best in show. Hike the Lake Agnes Tea House trail through gorgeous old-growth forest which does indeed bring you to a quaint old tea house on top of a mountain, just north of Lake Louise. Built as a refuge for hikers, it started serving tea in 1905, and still does today. Their hearty homemade soups, will hit the spot, too! Just off the Trans-Canada Highway close to the town of Banff, soak up the tranquil Vermilion Lakes, a network of marshlands and lakes. The lakes have wonderful views of jagged Mount Rundle, the town's signature peak. It's an awesome spot for picnicking, paddling, relaxing, and reflection photography. Grab a rental bike from town and pedal your way around this soothing slice of solitude. I didn't have time to explore the Icefields Parkway on this trip, but I will be back to do it. Many fellow travellers in Banff were raving about this 230km-long drive, connecting Banff National Park with Jasper National Park. Powerfully rugged mountain scenery, glaciers galore, and a gob full of wildlife including moose, wolves, bighorn sheep and grizzly bears: the Icefields Parkway comes highly recommended. A hotel guest remarked to me that it felt like the road had been carved inside the earth, with massive mountains clinging to the Continental Divide. If you're up for some cultural dabbling, check out the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Founded by the late Peter and Catharine Whyte, two Banff artists, the museum exhibits artworks and artifacts relating to the cultural heritage of the Rockies. Many of the earliest photos of Banff National Park can be found here, and the gallery of prized landscape paintings are sublime. Where to stay? One of the newest offerings in Banff is the Otter Hotel, delivering a winning blend of comfort and nature. This four-star mountain luxury hideaway is in the uptown district, on Banff Avenue. It's conveniently close to the bustle of downtown – just a ten minute walk away, but you're also blissfully removed from the tourist throb, tucked away in a calming forest setting. That's what Otter Hotel really excels in providing, a calmer escape, wrapped in nature's splendour. It's nailed the sweet spot, basking in the charm of Banff at a relaxed pace. You'll definitely want to dine on-site at one of Banff's newest upscale culinary destinations, Good Folk. Refined Canadian flavours and an intimate ambiance are to the fore, with exquisitely prepared dishes like bison burgers, Alberta wild boar chop, King Cole duck breast and Icelandic Arctic char. Their creative cocktails are a masterclass in wizardly mixology. The hotel's thoughtfully designed rooms feature contemporary comforts, elevated finishes, and inviting spaces to relax after an intrepid day out exploring. Surrounded by towering lodgepole pines and framed by sweeping Rocky Mountain views, nothing beats unwinding in the rooftop hot pools or lounging around the outdoor fire pits, drinking in the dreamy views of Cascade Mountain right in front of you. It's an elevated oasis of hospitality. All hotel guests also receive a complimentary ROAM transit pass, which is like a hop-on, hop-off bus, zipping you around all of Banff's top sites, with a high frequency schedule. otterhotel.com After soaking up the best of Banff, Calgary Airport is just a 90 minute ride away and Banff Airporter is the trusted ground transportation provider, with a comprehensive shuttle schedule. Highly-rated for their convenience, comfort and reliability, Banff Airporter operates a year-round, stress-free shuttle service to and from Calgary Airport and the mountains. For over 28 years, this locally owned and operated company has provided a dependable link, between the heart of the Rockies and the airport. Just sit back, relax and gorge on the scenery, as you pass by the serrated peaks spanning south of Banff, like the gorgeous Three Sisters, before the mountains give way to the rolling prairies surrounding Calgary. banffairporter.com Mike Yardley is Newstalk ZB's resident traveller and can be heard each week on Saturday Mornings with Jack Tame. Today's readings.. (Numbers 26), (Proverbs 18), (Philippians 1,2)We live in a world in which most of us are bombarded by information on all sorts of things, these include persuasive messages to spend money in acquiring or doing this or that allegedly desirable thing.  Very little, if any of this is of value in leading us toward greater spirituality: indeed, more often than not it will lead us in the opposite direction. Our thoughts followed along these lines as we read Paul's words of thanksgiving and encouragement to the Philippians.  Paul said, “One thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Ch. 3 v.13 onwards)  It is impossible, except for the elderly in a home, to ‘forget' the world!  The difficulty to “press forward” has never been greater!  Paul continues, “Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.  Only let us hold true to what we have attained.”  What have you attained? What a challenge this world is for those just starting or about to start on the pathway to attain heavenly citizenship. Paul laments about those whose “minds are set on earthly things” [v.19]  His next words are powerful, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body …”  Politicians are clamouring with ‘puffery' words to get us to vote for them, but we have the. only true citizenship – and just one candidate – and we wait for him to take his power and reign. Let us fix our eyes on him as “the sea and the waves” of the 21st Century foam and roar and there is “distress of nations in perplexity” (Luke 21 v.25)With Christ in the vessel we will smile at the storm!  But what of those who are not mature? Let us cull some words from the 5th chapter of Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians. “ … the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night … let us keep awake … we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith … encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all …pray without ceasing … may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. [v.2,6,8,1417,23,24]” Those “who are mature” today have a great responsibility.

The Gallic Sack of Rome - Part 6

The Partial Historians

We have finally reached the LAST part of our coverage of the Gallic Sack of Rome. Once again, whilst there are similar elements in our sources, it is astonishing to see the different way the authors weave the details together.Another Amazing Camillus Montage It is not often that Diodorus Sicilus is praised for his accuracy, but this is one of those rare moments. Savour it, everyone! Dr G takes us through the details of his account, in which Camillus is on a military rampage. Forget the Rocky training montage that Livy includes. This is a Rambo montage, with Camillus kicking ass all over Italy. He's taking down the Volscians, the Aequians, the Etruscans…. where does he find the time? It is during his escapades that Camillus recovers the ransomed gold, not the rather more dramatic intervention included in Livy's history. However, Diodorus and Livy are not the only sources to have different explanations for the return of the gold! Some sources claim it was the people of Caere who retrieve the ransom after defeating the Gauls in a battle, and others claim it was one of the Emperor Tiberius' ancestors who won it back in a battle with a Gallic chieftain. We will let you guess which version Dr Rad prefers…There's No Place like Rome Unlike Diodorus, Livy is content to keep the focus on affairs inside Rome. Camillus gets a triumph and then keeps his dictatorship because things are not yet as they should be. Camillus needs to make sure that Rome remains on the good side of the gods. Purification and restoration of the temples was the name of the game. However, most of the remainder of Livy's account for this year is dedicated to Camillus giving the MOTHER of all speeches. The tribunes of the plebs were stirring up trouble by pushing for Rome to be moved to Veii. Urgh, the tribunes. They were the only people Camillus did not miss whilst he was in exile. Why go to the effort of rebuilding the city when there's a perfectly good abandoned one right over there? Well, Camillus can tell you exactly why and in a painful level of detail. To cut a long story short: · Rome is far too amazeballs to leave· It seems incredibly DUMB to have defended it fiercely against the Gauls if they just planned to up sticks · Um, the location?! The views? · You can't just relocate your religion – we JUST patched things up with the gods, guys · This is just lazy behaviour and he doesn't like it. In fact, it is UN-ROMAN Camillus' rhetoric was incredibly powerful, but a sign sent straight from the gods helped to seal the deal. The Romans were staying put! Time to get Bob the Builder on the phone. Whichever historian you prefer, we both end up in roughly similar places by the end of 390 BCE (or thereabouts): the gods have been taken care of, the city has been rebuilt, the gold is back in Roman hands, and Camillus is the most awesome general… well, ever! And THAT brings the Gallic Sack of Rome to a close. Things to Look Out For: · The famously preserved head that was allegedly discovered on the Capitoline · The possible founding of the Capitoline Games for Jupiter Optimus Maximus · The building of a temple to Aius Locutius who TRIED to warn them about the Gauls. Schwoops!· Matrons! Yes, finally some women briefly grace our podcast once more · A mention of the Social War (91-87 BCE) between Rome and its Italian allies over their rights. Some of Camillus' speech may have been shaped by pro-Roman propaganda that originated during this conflict. · Ancient building programs – state-funded, no less · Very sweaty historians by the end of this showFor our full show notes and edited transcripts, head on over to https://partialhistorians.com/Support the showPatreonKo-FiRead our booksRex: The Seven Kings of RomeYour Cheeky Guide to the Roman EmpireThere wasn't room to have the social media links in there as well so I've prioritised the books for now and our patreon. For our full show notes and edited transcripts, head on over to https://partialhistorians.com/Support the showPatreonKo-FiRead our booksRex: The Seven Kings of RomeYour Cheeky Guide to the Roman Empire Hosted on Acast. Why does Christmas feel so magical—and how can we bottle that feeling for our families? In this episode, Justin and Kylie unpack the science behind Christmas joy and reveal the seven psychological drivers that make the season feel warm, connected, nostalgic, and full of wonder. From sensory anchors to collective effervescence, discover how small tweaks to your traditions can transform a stressful season into a slow, meaningful, joy-soaked one. This is your cheat-sheet to creating the kind of Christmas your kids will remember forever. KEY POINTS Relationships are the heart of Christmas—intentional togetherness boosts joy and belonging. Anticipated joy (hello Advent calendars) fuels dopamine and lifts mood weeks before the day arrives. Sensory anchoring—smells, sights, tastes—creates powerful nostalgia and emotional connection. Collective effervescence elevates community energy when everyone enters the same seasonal rhythm. Permission for wonder gives adults a rare chance to play, imagine, and embrace childlike magic. Savouring and gratitude turn small moments into the big memories our kids carry into adulthood. Applying these principles can fix a stressful or disappointing Christmas and make it joyful again. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE “Christmas is culturally sanctioned slowness—and if we savour it, the joy multiplies.” ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS Prioritise connection over productivity—plan moments of slow, intentional togetherness. Create anticipation with rituals that build excitement (tree, lights, Advent, small traditions). Use sensory anchors—scents, recipes, music, decorations—to spark nostalgia and joy. Lean into wonder: play, imagine, and embrace the magic your kids already feel. Savour moments in real time—pause, breathe, and let the season be slow. Is flavour just a sensory experience? Or the secret key to eating for health? In this episode, Spencer Hyman, flavour expert and co-founder of Cocoa Runners, joins Professor Tim Spector, world-leading scientist in nutrition and gut health, to uncover how the food industry manipulates taste to make us overeat, and how rediscovering real flavour could transform our wellbeing. Spencer reveals the fascinating science of flavour and why we “taste” with our noses, how chocolate became the world's first hyper-palatable food, and why modern diets are full of fake flavours designed to make us eat faster. Tim explains how “big food” exploits the brain's reward system to override fullness signals, creating products that keep us hooked - and what we can do to fight back. For listeners curious about how to rebuild a healthy relationship with food, this episode includes a practical guide to retraining your taste buds. Spencer and Tim share tips on how to eat more slowly, savour each bite, and use flavour as a natural marker of nutrient-rich, satisfying foods. Could learning the language of flavour be the most powerful way to eat better - without restriction? Try ZOE's NEW app and gut health test: ZOE.com Unwrap the truth about your food

Being a working mother is a rewarding yet demanding journey—filled with moments of joy, chaos, and everything in between. In the rush to manage deadlines, meals, meetings, and meltdowns, stress often becomes a constant companion. But it doesn't have to be. Mindfulness offers simple, practical tools that fit into even the busiest schedules, helping you find calm in the chaos and reset your emotional balance. Whether you have one minute or ten, these techniques are designed to ground you, refocus your mind, and bring more peace to your day.4 Key Takeaways:You don't need extra time—just intention.Mindfulness can be practised in the moments you already have: during a commute, in between meetings, or while folding laundry.Small pauses create big shifts.Techniques like deep breathing or mindful transitions only take seconds but can reset your mindset and lower stress immediately. The body holds stress—release it intentionally.A quick body scan or stretch can help you recognise and relieve tension before it builds up.Savour the good, not just survive the busy.Mindfulness helps you fully experience life's small joys, your child's laugh, a hot drink, or a quiet moment, rather than rushing past them.CONNECT ON SOCIAL MEDIA Ig- https://www.instagram.com/drdunni.lifecoach/YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9C1oJwHyISEuqiX8USaYKgCH- https://www.clubhouse.com/@drdunni-druwaFB- https://www.facebook.com/druwaacademyTwitter- https://twitter.com/drdunniPatreon - https://patreon.com/wellbeing4mothers HOST BIO Your host, Dr Dunni, is the award-winning mum empowerment coach, Family doctor, International speaker, Best-selling author of the book ‘Every Mum is a Super Mum' and a mum herself who is passionate about health and wellbeing. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, the 8th of November, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Gospel of John 8:9: “And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.” Alone with Jesus, what a special time of the day! It must become your most privileged time of the day, a time never to be neglected, my dear friend. Maybe we feel a little nervous or shy being alone with Jesus, a bit like when you went out on your first date. Can you remember that? When you had to get all dressed up smartly to try and impress that young lady or that young lady putting on her best dress and asking her mom, ”Do I look all right because he's coming to fetch me in a few moment's time.”Aah, but when you've spent many years and you're married and you've got children and maybe even grandchildren, aah, it is so beautiful to know each other, to be in each other's presence, and so it is when you've walked with the Master for many years. You can't wait to be with Him in the early morning before the noise and the distractions of this world take away your attention from the lover of your soul. Do not waste precious time. Savour these moments because they might even save your life. He is gentle to your troubled soul. He will give you clear direction and even confidence and peace in your heart before you have to face the day. You say, ”But I get very busy and I don't have a time to spend with the Lord.“ Oh, you need to get up earlier in the morning, my dear friend. Yes, that is one appointment you must never neglect. That is the very appointment that could save your life. You see, Jesus was left alone standing with that woman. She was the woman that the Pharisees accused of being an adulterer but Jesus said, ”Woman, where are your accusers?” And she said, ”No one Lord.” And he said, ”Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.”That's what the Lord wants to do for you and I today. He wants to sit with us alone, He wants to encourage us, He wants to love us, He wants to direct us. He's a friend that sticks closer than a brother. He's not the accuser, the accuser is the devil. Early in the morning, spend time alone with Jesus. It will change your life.Jesus bless you and goodbye.
