Black Caps v Pakistan series review: NZ depth on show in dominant display

In this episode of the show, Baldy, Raj and Stu look back at the two white-ball series between New Zealand and Pakistan, which the Black Caps won in dominant style - 7-1 across the ODI and T20s combined. We start the show as we mean to continue, with huge praise for NZ and the depth on display during the two series, but also with a big question to answer: Were the Black Caps fantastic or was Pakistan terrible? As things get specific, plenty of New Zealanders are thrust into the spotlight. Jacob Duffy is now the world's number-one-ranked T20 bowler, Ben Sears took back to back five-wicket bags and Will O'Rourke continues to impress. On the batting front, we saw impressive debuts from Muhammad Abbas and Rhys Mariu, Mark Chapman continued to take his opportunities, Mitch Hay produced an innings of real substance and Tim Seifert blasted his way to the Player of the Series in the T20s. Who are we most excited about? And when might there be more opportunities for these players to shine? To round out the show, there's also a word for Neil Wagner's fairytale finish - a five-wicket bag to seal the Plunket Shield for Northern Districts in his final first-class appearance in New Zealand. Over the past year, the Supreme Court has taken a far more active role in reviewing cases reflecting fringe arguments supported by federal district court judges and appellate circuits. The Western and Northern Districts of Texas have become the destination of choice for "judge-shopping" to receive the benefits of far-right conservative judicial ideology. But when attorneys challenging the ban on gender-affirming care used a similar approach to dismiss a case before a hostile right-wing conservative federal judge, the Alabama district court subjected them to a two-year secret investigation for purported "judge-shopping". Chris Geidner, a noted Supreme Court reporter and author of the newsletter "Law Dork" joins SideBar to discuss how federal "judge-shopping" is allegedly being used to manipulate outcomes and how the current Supreme Court is responding.

David Johnston: Kane Williamson's first cricket coach on his dedication and skill at the sport throughout his life

The Devlin Radio Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2024 12:42

The man who has scored more Test runs and more Test centuries than any other player from New Zealand was always likely to be a childhood star - but Kane Williamson's first cricket coach says it wasn't just his ability, but the way he carried himself that set him apart and set him on the course to be our greatest ever. David Johnston worked for Bay of Plenty Cricket for many years and came across a young Williamson playing junior cricket, already making a name for himself. At a regional primary school tournament Johnston told Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine he witnessed something that told him that Williamson was not only a player of supreme talent, but one that understood and respected the game of cricket. “It was in Gisborne at a Northern Districts primary school tournament, his Dad Brett was coaching them. He'd peeled off three centuries in the first three days so his dad changed the batting order, Kane came in at about eight I think. The team was in pretty serious trouble, maybe six down for not too many. “He proceeded to work his way through and he got to the last partner and I think they might have put on about 60 or 70 for the last wicket - Kane ended up with a hundred.” “As they walked off the field, the players stood to clap Kane and he stood back and let the young guy, who was about three or four not out at the other end, leave the field first because Kane recognised and respected he couldn't have done that without the young man that had been batting at the other end. That's just the mark of the boy back then at the age of 12 - and nothing's changed.” Williamson has become one of the most well-liked and respected cricketers in today's game and Johnston told Pine it comes down to an insatiable desire to be better - not better than his peers, but better than himself. “His father Brett had coach him in his early years and he'd done a very good job of establishing some pretty strong foundations in his game and once I got involved it was very obvious early on that he was not only quite talented but he had this prodigious desire to improve and I think that's the greatest thing about Kane.” “The desire to be better and it's nothing to do with being better than everybody else, it's just being better than himself. He used to practice harder than anybody else.” “Those who know Kane and those who have thrown cricket balls to him over the years would attest to the fact that nothing's changed he just loves to practice and loves to become better.” One of the marks of Williamson's ability is his appearance that things come easy to him when he is batting - Johnston says that wasn't always the case but that is one of the factors that led to his greatness. “I think his first game for Northern Districts he actually got a pair, playing against Auckland. So as a 16 or 17-year-old batting first drop I think it might have been Andre Adams got him LBW twice. “So right from the start, it didn't always happen but he had this thirst for improvement, this thirst for knowledge and thirst to be better. He dealt with it a lot better than anybody else and that's why he's one of the greats of today's cricket.”  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The IPL is about to dominate the world cricket calendar in April and May, but before it does we take a look at the many series and tournaments going on across the globe. We start in New Zealand with the Black Caps taking on the Netherlands, and discuss impressive performances from Will Young and Michael Rippon in the first ODI. At the IPL, it looks like it might be a tough season for Kane Williamson's Sunrisers Hyderabad, but why don't the betting agencies rate the Rajasthan Royals? And are we in for a run-fest over the next few months? Bangladesh beat South Africa in an ODI series and now sit at the top of the Super League table - can they repeat the dose in the Test series with the Proteas missing their entire first-choice seam attack? And back in Aotearoa, the Women's World Cup continues to deliver exciting finishes as we reach the semi-final stage. We talk about the drama of the final pool game between India and South Africa, potential departures from the White Ferns and Australia's ability to keep marching on no matter how tricky the situation gets. We finish with a few highlights from the Plunket Shield action of the past few days. The Auckland train keeps rolling, with Simon Keene continuing the amazing start to his first-class career, and Jeet Raval and Bharat Popli bat through an entire day for Northern Districts. We'll be back later in the week with a red-ball recap, covering the West Indies v England and Pakistan v Australia Test series in detail. Welcome to the Inside Edge Podcast with Bhavi Devchand, this is the show that turns the journeys of some of the leading coaches, athletes and leaders into actionable lessons you can implement into your own lives. Our guest today is Jo Broadbent. Jo averaged a staggering 109 in tests, took 38 ODI wickets and was a World Cup winner in 1997. Like our recent guest Charlotte Edwards, Jo made an incredibly successful transition to the coaching world, leading NSW to over 10 WNCL titles, and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2018 for her services to cricket.  She gives incredible insights into managing a wide variety of teams, from the superstars at NSW to ICC developing nations and now in her role as head coach of Northern Districts in New Zealand. A common theme in Jo's philosophies is connection. Connection with each individual player - understanding what makes them tick and allowing them to embrace their quirks and individuality. At the same time, it is about connecting to a common purpose, taking a group of varied individuals and getting them to work towards a common goal. In essence, she creates environments where people can belong, rather than have the need to fit in. There is a big difference. Belonging is where you can be your most authentic, natural self and now that despite your imperfections, the people around you still accept you. Fitting in occurs when you think you need to change who you are, in order to be accepted by those around you. By creating a psychologically safe environment, we can clear some of this noise, creating space to be in the moment and focus on the task at hand. All of this is easier said than done, however, Jo has done a great job of articulating some methods you can use to move towards a culture based on connection.  Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to know more about how you can leverage the power of connection in your own life. The amazing part is that you don't have to be a professional athlete or coach at the elite level to apply some of the tools and techniques discussed, you just need to be open and willing to go into the weeds, do the work and know that you'll be ok on the other side. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/insideedgeprojectLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bhavi-devchand-85302892/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/insideedgeproject/Twitter: https://twitter.com/insideedgeproj

Watch GTP on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKdeO4IodggpSLyhWVdcWKw   Episode Details: The Stone Law Group's trial team -- comprised of father Bill Stone and sons James Stone and Ryals Stone -- explain how they thoroughly investigated a fatal car accident and proved that their client, a promising 19-year-old University of Mississippi student, was not the proximate cause of his own tragic death, as law enforcement investigators initially concluded. In the early morning hours of March 29, 2013, University of Mississippi freshman Price Thornal was attempting to travel from Oxford, Mississippi to his hometown in Tallahassee, Florida to celebrate his father's birthday. Price's Honda Civic was hit head-on by the defendant, who was driving a Dodge Durango on the wrong side of the divided US Hwy 84. Trial lawyers Bill, James and Ryals Stone used the GPS system in Price's car to plot his trajectory and utilized the defendant's cell phone records as evidence of her negligence and opposing trajectory. In spite of the defendant's attempts to cast blame on Price, the Stone Law Group used basic physics as well as expert accident reconstruction to show the jury which car was traveling in the appropriate direction. In November 2021, after just 20 minutes of deliberation, an Early County, Georgia jury found the defendant's negligence to be the proximate cause of Price's death and awarded $26,141,628 in damages.  Click Here to Read/Download Trial Documents   Guest Bios: William Stone: Bill is a trial lawyer from Blakely, Georgia, who specializes in personal injury, wrongful death, professional malpractice, product liability, commercial and consumer fraud cases. This week on RNZs Extra Time, Bridget Tunnicliffe poses the question to Stuff sports journalist Paul Cully, sports commentator Hamish Bidwell and RNZ sports reporter Joe Porter. We discuss the relationship between the media and well known sportspeople in New Zealand in light of a Stuff article that heard from the neighbours of one-test All Black Josh Ioane. Residents said the Dunedin property of Ioane had turned into a notorious "party house" where noisy, alcohol-fuelled gatherings frequently happened at weekends. The story came after the news that Ioane and five other players were stood down by the Highlanders after they went drinking following their round five loss to the Hurricanes. But some people didn't like the story including Hurricanes captain Ardie Savea. How should sports journalists approach reporting when it emerges that elite athletes have been behaving badly? Also, this week we hear from Australian cricket great Joanne Broadbent, who now coaches the Northern Districts, about the gulf between Australia and New Zealand in the women's game.

Sidney strives to set the gold standard of lawyers while representing individuals, corporations, and government in federal appeals in complex commercial litigation. She has practiced law, primarily in the Fifth Federal Circuit for decades. She has been lead counsel in more than 500 federal appeals—350 of them as an Assistant United States Attorney and Appellate Section Chief in the Western and Northern Districts of Texas. She is a past president of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and the Bar Association of the Fifth Federal Circuit, and a member of the American Law Institute. After seeing a core group of federal prosecutors break all the rules, make up crimes, hide evidence, and send innocent people to prison, she felt compelled to do what no other attorney has dared: expose corruption in the Department of Justice–and name the culprits. The result is a national best-selling book; LICENSED TO LIE: Exposing Corruption in the Department of Justice. The book reads like a legal thriller, but it names the prosecutors who then rose to positions of great power and the judges who turned a blind eye to their abuses of unfettered power. https://defendingtherepublic.org/

The Black Caps have been hit by a double injury blow ahead of their second test against England, with Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme both being ruled out due to injury.Boult, who could only bowl one over on the final day of the Black Caps' win by an innings and 65 runs in Mount Maunganui, went for an MRI scan yesterday, which confirmed he had strained one of the muscles overlying his ribs on his right hand-side, but cleared him of any bone stress. He will miss the test starting on Friday at Seddon Park, as will de Grandhomme, who sustained a tear to his left lower abdominal muscle during the second innings, which saw him not bowl after lunch. The pair will begin rehabiliation with an aim to be fit for the Black Caps' first test against Australia in Perth on December 12, and Black Caps bowling coach Shane Jurgensen was hopeful both can recover in time."It's as good as what it could be, and hopefully they won't be out for too long."[Boult's injury] is quite a unique bowling injury that's not been seen much before, but fingers crossed it will be a quick rehab."We want them to be on the plane to go to Perth, so we're certainly working towards that, but the initial plan is really just rest and rehab."Northern Districts all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has been called into the test squad as de Grandhomme's replacement, and will join the Black Caps today along with Lockie Ferguson and Todd Astle, who have rejoined the test squad after being released to play domestic one-day cricket.Colin de Grandhomme (left) and Trent Boult (middle) have both been ruled out of the Black Caps' second test against England. Photo / GettyMitchell, who has played nine Twenty20 internationals for the Black Caps, hit an unbeaten 170 for Northern Districts in his last Plunket Shield match, and played for New Zealand A against England in their warm-up match, taking 2-34 and contributing scores of 19 not out and 22 with the bat.He most recently took 3-54 and hit an unbeaten 62 from 54 balls to lead ND to a one-day win over Central Districts on Monday.A powerful batsman with good technique who likes to hit the ball straight, Mitchell averages 35.6 with the bat in first-class cricket, and 33.5 with the ball, having taken 61 first-class wickets with his medium-pace offerings.Daryl Mitchell is in line for a test debut. Photo / PhotosportHe would be a like-for-like swap with de Grandhomme, though Black Caps coach Gary Stead could opt for an extra batsman in Tom Blundell, or play four seamers or two spinners, with Mitchell Santner promoted to bat at No 7.Jurgensen was certain Mitchell has the skills to replace de Grandhomme's all-round production."It's a really fantastic opportunity for Daryl, if he's selected for this test he'd probably take a similar role – I certainly think he's got the capability to do what Colin's been able to do."Boult's ailment seemingly opens up a spot for Ferguson to make his much-anticipated test debut in a seam bowling trio alongside Tim Southee and Neil Wagner, but with Matt Henry also an option, Jurgensen wasn't keen to make any assertions just yet."All options will be considered – [Henry] has done a really good job for the team and is a genuine new-ball bowler, and so is Lockie. We'll look at the pitch and see what our best lineup is."
