After a series of streakers interrupted the opening round of Super Rugby Pacific over the weekend, Matt Heath and Tyler Adams asked what the motivation is and whether there's a solution to it. That prompted Aaron Bain to call, one of the infamous streakers who interrupted a Bledisloe Cup test in 2002 covered in Vodafone branding. While he says he wasn't paid by the Australian telco for the stunt, he revealed there was a deal that if he made it to the field he would get paid $500, and if they got on TV they would get $1000, and all their fines would be paid for. 23 years later, he told Matt and Tyler that he had a a good time. "I'll tell you that it was funny, everybody knew me, my grandparents were proud." And his only regret? "I regret that we lost the game." Ian Foster: Newly appointed Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit

Holiday Breakfast

Surprised, and humbled. That's the reaction of former All Blacks coach Ian Foster after being made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Having spent decades working in rugby, including 12 years with the All Blacks, Foster's contribution to the game has earned him inclusion in the New Year's Honours list. But Foster's contribution to the sport extends far beyond what he did at the highest level. The 148 matches Foster played for Waikato are still a record for the province and the tally is unlikely to be bettered. Among active players, only Liam Messam, aged 40, gets close at 104 games. As a coach, Foster's spells with both Waikato and the Chiefs paved the way for him to step into the All Blacks, where he lifted the World Cup as an assistant to Sir Steve Hansen in 2012. And speaking to Newstalk ZB's Summer Breakfast with Tim Beveridge, the 59-year-old is happy to deflect praise towards those who have helped him get to where he is, rather than take personal credit. “It's always for other people, isn't it? It's never for you,” Foster said. “But upon a little bit of reflection, I'm incredibly grateful for the acknowledgment. “That's, I guess, for my involvement in rugby, and something I've loved. You don't do it for any acknowledgment, but it's been pretty special. “With every layer, there's special memories. There's people that have been a massive influence, and people that have helped you along the pathways. “Every level has its own highs and lows. It was never a written goal to be coach of the All Blacks. “It was always about enjoying the moment and enjoying the group of people I was with at the time. “The thing that's been most special for me is seeing the support I've had over the years from family and friends at those different levels.” A year on from the All Blacks' heartbreaking one-point loss to South Africa in the Rugby World Cup final, Foster has taken his coaching acumen offshore and been reunited with former mentor Hansen at Toyota Verblitz in Japan. The move to Japan came after New Zealand Rugby acted to replace Foster before a ball had even been kicked in 2023, as Scott Robertson was backed as the man to lead the All Blacks into the future. Despite that, though, Foster's tenure ultimately showed his worth as a coach. Ian Foster and Sir Steve Hansen in 2019. Photo / Getty Images Aside from his World Cup campaign as head coach, where the All Blacks ended Ireland's run before losing to South Africa, Foster defended the Bledisloe Cup every year, and also kept hold of the Freedom Cup against the Springboks. One year on, that prize has been surrendered to South Africa. And while public praise may not have flowed during his tenure, Foster never lost the support of his players. In mid-2022, when Foster faced the sack while the team were away in South Africa, a group of senior players personally pulled NZ Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson aside to outline that the coach needed to keep his job. After the World Cup final defeat in the bowels of Stade de France, assistant coach Jason Ryan was asked what he thought Foster deserved to be remembered for. His answer was how much Foster cared for the All Blacks. That care is consistent with Foster's approach to coaching on the whole, and the credit Foster gives to the players who have been part of his career. “For me, coaching is about caring for the people you work with. You get the best out of them if you care for them, if you try to understand what they're going through. “I love coaching, it's a great chance to influence people. But to do that, you've got to walk a little bit of life in their shoes, and understand the pressures they're going through. “Quite frankly, the players, every week we put them out, we expect high standards, so they should expect the same out of us.” Now, though, Foster's challenge lies in Japan. His Toyota Verblitz have opened their Rugby League One season with defeats to Kubota Spears and Honda Heat. Japan has become a destination for Kiwis, coaches and players alike. Foster is joined at Toyota by Aaron Smith, while former All Blacks charges Sam Cane and TJ Perenara have also just moved to Suntory Sungoliath and Black Rams Tokyo respectively. But as seen by the large number of quality internationals moving to Japanese clubs, playing there is about so much more than earning a paycheque. Foster is no different. “It's a great new challenge, a new culture, a new language, new food, new road to drive to work, new personalities — a new Ian Foster,” he said. “It's a great chance to try and teach an old dog new tricks. I want to keep growing as a coach, this is a great chance to do it. “But what I've learned is really, rugby players are rugby players — whether they speak Kiwi, Aussie or Japanese. “The beautiful thing is there's some great people over here, and I'm enjoying getting to know them. “I love what I'm doing.” Alex Powell is an Online Sports Editor for the NZ Herald. Carlos Spencer: Former All Black previews the second Bledisloe test, discusses Damian McKenzie's rough time on 10

The All Blacks start a test match on Saturday under coach Scott Robertson with someone other than Damian McKenzie at first-five for the first time. Beauden Barrett will instead run the cutter against the Wallabies at Sky Stadium, his first start at No. 10 since 2022, with a former All Black playmaker saying that should remain the case as he doesn't see McKenzie as being at the level of an international first-five. Carlos Spencer made 35 test appearances in black and only five players have scored more points for the All Blacks than him. A player of similar style to McKenzie with a prized ability to unlock defences through innovative plays, he tells Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine he sees the 29-year-old as better suited to fullback. “I almost feel a little bit sorry for him to be honest. It's been a tough little road for him, obviously on the back of a team that probably hasn't performed to its potential and unfortunately it's usually the No. 10 that takes most of the stick. “I've always considered Damian as a better fullback than a No.10.”Spencer says McKenzie's Super Rugby form in the position is evident but does not see him as a test-level first-five. “Personally, no. I don't think he is. I think he's great at Super level but when it comes to test matches I just don't think he's got what it takes to be a really assertive No. 10 unfortunately. “I like Damian McKenzie, I think he's a great player but I just find that he's better suited at fullback than 10.”More time and space on the ball that is found when playing with 15 on his back, rather than 10, is what Spencer says makes McKenzie more suited to fullback. “He's got more time to make decisions, there's a bit more space, he enters the line well. I think he can see more from at the back. “That doesn't stop him from jumping into first receiver occasionally from fullback, but I think those are the biggest points. I think he just lacks that direction at test match level where it's really important.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Off the top of your head, where do reckon the Wallabies currently sit in the World rankings?   Sure, they're behind us. They're behind South Africa, of course. But they're also languishing behind Scotland, behind Italy, would you believe.  According to World Rugby, the Wallabies of September 2024 are the ninth best national team in men's rugby today. They only just squeak in ahead of Fiji.  When I was a kid, the Bledisloe felt like the biggest thing in rugby outside of a World Cup. It probably wasn't, of course. Tests with South Africa were at least comparable, I guess, and Lions tours had their prestige. But I would get so worked up for Bledisloes because they always felt like anyone could win.   I still remember epic Bledisloe clashes. The John Eales era. George Gregan and that tackle, Jeff Wilson spilling the ball as he dived for the line, the Wallabies just holding on for Bledisloe glory.  But what happened? New Zealand Rugby's had its issues, but arguably no country that plays rugby has experienced anything like the decline that Australia has experienced. Those epic Bledisloe clashes of the past are becoming ancient history. It's 22 years since Australia last held the Bledisloe - we now have an elected Member of Parliament who has never seen the Wallabies win it.   And get this: according to the Australian Sports Commission, rugby is the country's ninth-most-popular sport by participation. Aussie Rules has four times as many kids who play. Basketball is five times more popular. Rugby loses out to rock climbing and badminton.   There are a range of things that have likely contributed. The private school rugby culture in Australia has isolated the sport from a huge slab of the population. Concern over head knocks will have impacted participation. The domestic rugby competition was hollowed out and ultimately scrapped, which means the Super Rugby teams are the only real professional options for young players. The AFL has 18 teams. The NRL has 16 Australian teams. Super Rugby will now have just four. It's telling that a city of five million couldn't sustain a side. How many people in Melbourne didn't even know the Rebels were a thing? And as a TV entertainment product, sorry, but the Brumbies vs the Force rarely compares to the thrill of the NRL.  All of this is not to diminish this evening's game. And I'm certainly not hoping for a Wallabies win. But ultimately, it's in our interests for Australian rugby to somehow work its way back into something akin to the force of the past. New Zealand rugby needs better competition from across the ditch. We need the spectre of potentially losing the Bledisloe! Maybe I'll eat my words, but as much as I'll enjoy the game this evening, right now... it doesn't feel like all that much of a contest. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New stats show we are no longer drinking like we used to, the dramatic fall in booze consumption. And Nicola Dally-Paki has come the full circle from being broken and totally distraught after her baby boy Moko was killed by caregivers, to now, being a leader, a mentor, and a role model to others. Remove from bowl and set aside. 2. Place milk, oil and salt into Thermomix bowl and heat 5 mins/90C/speed 1. 3. Add tapioca starch and mix to combine, 20 sec/speed 6. 4. Allow to cool for 20 mins or so. 5.  Add eggs and cheese and mix 20sec/speed 6. 6. Place mixture into a large bowl and set in the fridge or freezer to completely cool and become firm (at least 30 mins in freezer, or 1 hour in fridge – can be left a day or two in fridge in a sealed container). 7. Meanwhile, prepare a 12 hole muffin tin by greasing with some olive oil or butter, or line muffin tin with paper liners. 8. Preheat oven to 200C. 9.    Scoop out cold mixture into muffin cups with a nice cream scoop or large dessert spoon, so the cups are approx 3/4 filled witha rounded top. (Mixture will be very stiff and even have a dry, crusty layer – that's fine, the crusty bits will melt and they will cook perfectly.) 10. Bake for 25 mins, or until golden brown and crunchy on the outside. Make sure they are firm to touch before removing from oven, so they don't fall. To make them even crunchier on the outside, you can turn off oven, leave door a little ajar, and leave them there for another 10-15 mins. 11. Serve hot for super crunchy outside and chewy inside! Conventional method: 1.    Grate cheese and set aside. 2. Heat together milk, oil and salt in a saucepan on the stovetop over med-high heat, just until milk is hot but not boiling. (Stir now and then while it heats.) 3. Remove from heat, add tapioca starch and mix to combine. Cool mixture for 20 mins or so. 4.    Add eggs and cheese and mix well in a food processor or blender, until quite smooth. Place into fridge or freezer so mixture is completely cold before continuing with recipe above. 1. Keep batter in fridge for up to 3 days. Keep baked puffs in a sealed container/bag in the fridge for up to a week, or in freezer for a month or so. They're yummy served cold but will be chewy, not crunchy on the outside. Leftover puffs can be halved, turned upside down, and heated in hot grill to bring back the crunch! DID YOU SEE THAT?
