After a series of streakers interrupted the opening round of Super Rugby Pacific over the weekend, Matt Heath and Tyler Adams asked what the motivation is and whether there's a solution to it. That prompted Aaron Bain to call, one of the infamous streakers who interrupted a Bledisloe Cup test in 2002 covered in Vodafone branding. While he says he wasn't paid by the Australian telco for the stunt, he revealed there was a deal that if he made it to the field he would get paid $500, and if they got on TV they would get $1000, and all their fines would be paid for. 23 years later, he told Matt and Tyler that he had a a good time. "I'll tell you that it was funny, everybody knew me, my grandparents were proud." And his only regret? "I regret that we lost the game." Joe looks at the All Blacks Bledisloe Cup win and to the tough tests ahead.
Rugby podcasters Brett McKay and Harry Jones launch into another Test Match post-mortem before giving it any thought at all, with this week's fulltime focus on another weird and curious Bledisloe Cup contest in Wellington, where the All Blacks overcame some first half issues to put the Wallabies away 33-13. After their almost comeback in Sydney, this loss in Wellington will have to be one that the Wallabies review harshly after one of their strongest first halves of the year, while the All Blacks made some impressive defensive shifts to regain an even share of possession and territory, which allowed them to get away in the second half. The Wallabies gave the All Blacks an almighty scare last week. They look to build on that performance to pull off an upset against the All Blacks in Wellington. Off the top of your head, where do reckon the Wallabies currently sit in the World rankings? Sure, they're behind us. They're behind South Africa, of course. But they're also languishing behind Scotland, behind Italy, would you believe. According to World Rugby, the Wallabies of September 2024 are the ninth best national team in men's rugby today. They only just squeak in ahead of Fiji. When I was a kid, the Bledisloe felt like the biggest thing in rugby outside of a World Cup. It probably wasn't, of course. Tests with South Africa were at least comparable, I guess, and Lions tours had their prestige. But I would get so worked up for Bledisloes because they always felt like anyone could win. I still remember epic Bledisloe clashes. The John Eales era. George Gregan and that tackle, Jeff Wilson spilling the ball as he dived for the line, the Wallabies just holding on for Bledisloe glory. But what happened? New Zealand Rugby's had its issues, but arguably no country that plays rugby has experienced anything like the decline that Australia has experienced. Those epic Bledisloe clashes of the past are becoming ancient history. It's 22 years since Australia last held the Bledisloe - we now have an elected Member of Parliament who has never seen the Wallabies win it. And get this: according to the Australian Sports Commission, rugby is the country's ninth-most-popular sport by participation. Aussie Rules has four times as many kids who play. Basketball is five times more popular. Rugby loses out to rock climbing and badminton. There are a range of things that have likely contributed. The private school rugby culture in Australia has isolated the sport from a huge slab of the population. Concern over head knocks will have impacted participation. The domestic rugby competition was hollowed out and ultimately scrapped, which means the Super Rugby teams are the only real professional options for young players. The AFL has 18 teams. The NRL has 16 Australian teams. Super Rugby will now have just four. It's telling that a city of five million couldn't sustain a side. How many people in Melbourne didn't even know the Rebels were a thing? And as a TV entertainment product, sorry, but the Brumbies vs the Force rarely compares to the thrill of the NRL. All of this is not to diminish this evening's game. And I'm certainly not hoping for a Wallabies win. But ultimately, it's in our interests for Australian rugby to somehow work its way back into something akin to the force of the past. New Zealand rugby needs better competition from across the ditch. We need the spectre of potentially losing the Bledisloe! Maybe I'll eat my words, but as much as I'll enjoy the game this evening, right now... it doesn't feel like all that much of a contest. The All Blacks are set to defend the trophy they have held for more than two decades this weekend. Scott Roberton has named his side for the first Bledisloe Cup test in Sydney on Saturday, sports reporter Jonty Dine spoke to Lisa Owen.
Today we are joined on the phone by Damian Mackenzie, First Five for the All Blacks ahead of the Bledisloe Cup series.
Will Jordan's move to All Blacks fullback has been short lived. Jordan shifts back to the right wing for Saturday afternoon's Bledisloe Cup test in Sydney, with Beauden Barrett restored to fullback and Caleb Clarke on the left wing. It's the same back three that started in Johannesburg against the Springboks, before Barrett switched to the bench for Cape Town. Coach Scott Robertson says they believe it's best for this week with Clarke now fit again. Jordan told Mike Hosking that while Australia is not South Africa, they all know how important the Bledisloe Cup is, and losing that certainly provides plenty of fear. He said that it's about maintaining or even lifting their intensity from over in South Africa, and making sure they put Australia on the back foot from the start. Cut cheese into 2cm cubes and grate in Thermomix 8 sec/speed 8. Remove from bowl and set aside. 2. Place milk, oil and salt into Thermomix bowl and heat 5 mins/90C/speed 1. 3. Add tapioca starch and mix to combine, 20 sec/speed 6. 4. Allow to cool for 20 mins or so. 5. Add eggs and cheese and mix 20sec/speed 6. 6. Place mixture into a large bowl and set in the fridge or freezer to completely cool and become firm (at least 30 mins in freezer, or 1 hour in fridge – can be left a day or two in fridge in a sealed container). 7. Meanwhile, prepare a 12 hole muffin tin by greasing with some olive oil or butter, or line muffin tin with paper liners. 8. Preheat oven to 200C. 9. Scoop out cold mixture into muffin cups with a nice cream scoop or large dessert spoon, so the cups are approx 3/4 filled witha rounded top. (Mixture will be very stiff and even have a dry, crusty layer – that's fine, the crusty bits will melt and they will cook perfectly.) 10. Bake for 25 mins, or until golden brown and crunchy on the outside. Make sure they are firm to touch before removing from oven, so they don't fall. To make them even crunchier on the outside, you can turn off oven, leave door a little ajar, and leave them there for another 10-15 mins. 11. Serve hot for super crunchy outside and chewy inside! Conventional method: 1. Grate cheese and set aside. 2. Heat together milk, oil and salt in a saucepan on the stovetop over med-high heat, just until milk is hot but not boiling. (Stir now and then while it heats.) 3. Remove from heat, add tapioca starch and mix to combine. Cool mixture for 20 mins or so. 4. Add eggs and cheese and mix well in a food processor or blender, until quite smooth. Place into fridge or freezer so mixture is completely cold before continuing with recipe above. 1. Keep batter in fridge for up to 3 days. Keep baked puffs in a sealed container/bag in the fridge for up to a week, or in freezer for a month or so. They're yummy served cold but will be chewy, not crunchy on the outside. Leftover puffs can be halved, turned upside down, and heated in hot grill to bring back the crunch! DID YOU SEE THAT?
