Yesterday, during nearly three and a half hours of raw, emotional, and often irate testimony, four police officers who were on the front lines of the January 6th battle with pro-Trump rioters at the US Capitol gave the House Select Committee investigating the insurrection detailed accounts of their harrowing experiences on that fateful day. Their remarks were punctuated by video montages that demonstrated the unrelenting and vicious violence that greatly outnumbered law enforcement personnel encountered. The videos showed an unhinged crowd that was brutal and relentless in their attack, animated by their belief in the fiction that the election of Joe Biden was illegitimate. Officer Harry Dunn repeated, verbatim and unfiltered, the hateful, racist vitriol that the rioters spewed at him. Tom begins the conversation today with analysis by Luke Broadwater, a longtime friend of Midday who covers Congress for The New York Times. In 2019, as a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, Luke broke the story of the Healthy Holly scandal, which led to former Mayor Catherine Pugh and others being sent to prison. Luke and his Sun colleagues won the Pulitzer Prize and a George Polk Award for their reporting of that story. Luke Broadwater joins us on our digital line from his home in Columbia, Maryland. Then, Tom speaks with William Braniff. He is the Director of START, the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism and a Professor of the Practice at the University of Maryland. Tom's guest now is Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck,. She's been joining us regularly throughout this pandemic, while the region's many stages remain dark, to tell us how theater companies are keeping their audiences engaged with a mix of outdoor and virtual streaming productions. Today, she spotlights two local theater companies who've come up with unusual ways to create and present new work during COVID.  The first is Baltimore Rock Opera Society's Puppet 6-Pack, a collection of six short puppet and animated films produced by Baltimore-based artists. Three of the films premiered last Friday. The last three of the films are live-streaming in a ticketed event tonight at 7pm, and all six films will continue to be available on demand for ticket holders. The second is a virtual, phone-based production of Healthy Holly’s Hidden Hideaway, an original political satire by Agyeiwaa Asante and April Amara, written in collaboration with the itinerant Baltimore troupe, The Single Carrot Ensemble. It’s streaming for ticketed patrons through February 15th. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Journalist Luke Broadwater helped his paper, The Baltimore Sun, earn a 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting with his investigative work in breaking and covering the Healthy Holly story in Maryland last year that involved the mayor of Baltimore, Catherine Pugh. It’s just another title the Maryland native can add to his resume. What’s also on there? Wrestler and coach. On Episode 604 of Short Time, Broadwater talks about what it took to break that news story, how the real world of local reporting differs from those attacking media as “fake news” and his background as a high school wrestler at McDonogh, a Division III wrestler at Ithaca and a college coach at the NCWA program at Maryland-Baltimore County. It’s engaging and interesting if you like the world of breaking news or talking about the old days and what you remember learning from your coach.   If you'd like to SUPPORT THE SHOW and all the on-demand audio offerings, free newsletters and historical research AND you want to get some of that cool Compound gear, you can support this program by making a small monthly contribution to the network by following this link.   SUBSCRIBE TO ROKFIN, HELP THE NETWORK Subscribe to Rokfin, a content-creator driven news outlet with exclusive and dynamic content and know your subscription revenue goes to help the independent content creators, like Mat Talk Online. The Pulitzer Prize is journalism’s most prestigious award. Yesterday, the Pulitzer committee announced that our local paper, the Baltimore Sun, won the 2020 Pulitzer for Local Reporting. Its series of reports on the Healthy Holly scandal, which began in March of 2019, were described by the Pulitzer judges as “illuminating and insightful.” The Sun’s reporting led to the conviction and upcoming imprisonment of former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, and to some significant anti-corruption legislative reforms. Tom's first guest today is one of the reporters on the Sun team. Luke Broadwater, who currently serves as the paper's State House reporter, broke the story about former Mayor Catherine Pugh’s financial relationship with the Board of Directors of the University of Maryland Medical System, and similar relationships the board had with other members. Broadwater describes the Sun staff's reactions to the Pulitzer -- the paper's first in 17 years -- and how it reinforces the value of local investigative reporting at a time when newsrooms like the Sun's face uncertain futures.

The rise and ignominious fall of former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Elizabeth Pugh. Her humiliation has unfolded in what feels like slow motion over the past year, and Thursday, Feb. 13, delivered what looks to be the penultimate chapter in this saga. Federal prosecutors, in a sentencing memorandum, requested U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow sentence Pugh to 57-months in prison. Pugh’s defense attorney has asked the judge to sentence the 69-year-old West Baltimore resident to a year in jail. Pugh pleaded guilty in November to four of the 11 charges she faced in federal court involving conspiracy and tax evasion stemming from her scheme to finance her political campaigns with sales of her self-published “Healthy Holly” children’s books. Pugh is slated to be sentenced on Feb. 27.

Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh /pyu/ pleaded guilty to several charges relating to a book scandal. Pugh, the mayor of Baltimore since 2016, came under public scrutiny in March this year. At the time, The Baltimore Sun was conducting a standard review of public officials' financial records. According to the publication, Pugh made $500,000 from selling her self-published Healthy Holly books to the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), where she was a board member. The mayor also failed to report the profit she made to the government. This prompted the government to begin a formal investigation in April. Shortly after the beginning of the investigation, Pugh stepped down as mayor because of public pressure. In November, the government released its findings in an indictment. According to the indictment, Pugh encouraged foundations and non-profit organizations like the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) to buy her books. However, Pugh reportedly violated business agreements through actions like not delivering the books or selling them twice to double the profit. Pugh also used the profit from the books to fund her election campaign in 2016 and to purchase and renovate a residence in Baltimore. The prosecutors charged Pugh with multiple counts of tax evasion and fraud, most of which she pleaded guilty to. The former mayor will face a prison sentence of 35 years for her crimes. After the indictment's release, United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert Hur commented that Pugh betrayed public trust. He added that public officials involved in corruption deceive the people and cause them to lose trust in the government. Because of this, the attorney believes that public officials should always prioritize the interest of the citizens over their personal interests.
