Welcome to the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast, where we explore innovative strategies for creating more efficient and balanced clinical days. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Jattu Senesie, a board-certified OBGYN who has courageously reshaped her career to prioritize well-being and sustainability. Dr. Senesie shares her transformative journey from enduring the pressures and expectations of traditional medical practice to becoming a renowned coach for early-career physicians, focusing on intentional career transitions and life design. Join us as we explore how Dr. Senesie overcame feelings of dissatisfaction and burnout, and learn valuable strategies for keeping well-being at the core of your professional journey. Whether you're navigating the challenges of medical training or seeking a more sustainable approach to your career, this episode provides a wealth of wisdom and encouragement. Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: Start with Well-being: Success and personal fulfillment can coexist. It's crucial to incorporate well-being as a cornerstone in your career and life planning. Shift from Survival to Sustainability: Move beyond the survival mindset from medical training and cultivate habits that respect your own priorities as well as those of others. Recognize and Address Needs Early: Be proactive about understanding and meeting your personal needs to avoid burnout and enhance career longevity. Dr. Jattu Senesie Bio: Dr. Jattu Senesie is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, self-described recovering pathological altruist and native of the Washington DC metropolitan area. She is an alumna of the University of Maryland Baltimore County where she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Biological Sciences. Her medical training took her to Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. There she obtained her medical degree and completed her residency training in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Dr Senesie returned to the DC area after training and spent six years in a private obstetrics and gynecology practice in Maryland. Dr Senesie retired from clinical practice at age 35 in an attempt to find a balance between maintaining her own sense of well-being and living a life of service. Since leaving clinical medicine, she has become a personal and professional development coach and physician satisfaction specialist through her business Essence of Strength. Because of her own experience, Dr Senesie's particular passion is helping early career physicians to be as intentional about the factors impacting their sense of satisfaction and well-being as they have been about those contributing to their success. Through individual coaching, workshops, writing and speaking, she seeks to help her fellow healthcare professionals develop the mindset and the methods necessary to sustain their full potential inside and outside the clinical setting. -------------- **** Charting Champions is a premiere, lifetime access Physician only program that is helping Physicians get home with today's work done. This episode features a lively conversation with Fan Yang, Professor of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, about her new book Disorienting Politics: Chimerican Media and Transpacific Entanglements. The term “Chimerica” is a portmanteau word, blending “China” and “America.” The neologism denotes the economic, political, and cultural entanglements of the two countries. Fan Yang uses the concept of “Chimerican media” to explore how the conflicts and tensions between the world's two superpowers are played out in movies, television series, journalism, and media products that are often viewed by people in both countries.  Drawing upon media examples such as House of Cards, The Martian, and Firefly, Prof. Yang shows how the tendency of American media to portray the Chinese state as a racialized “other” tends to complicate the two countries' increasing geopolitical entanglement. The conversation also touches on the reconceptualized Netflix version of The Three Body Problem and the complex reactions on both sides of the Pacific to the depictions of Cultural Revolution violence in the series.

Here are some takeaways from the conversation I had with Shaness Kemp who happens to be a performing artist, choreographer, and dance educator. The first takeaway is you need time to replenish. Now this looks different for all of us but it's important to replenish so you can continue to pour out as an artist. Next, versatility is the key to flexibility. If you are versatile it's easier to be flexible and follow the road that unfolds in front of you. And third, that once you let go of the fear of not understanding, or looking silly, or being uncomfortable you will realize how much you can actually do. Shaness D. Kemp Kemp is a native of Nassau, Bahamas and holds both a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Master's of Fine Arts degree from Temple University. She is an Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and continues to work as a freelance dancer, choreographer and dance educator. As Master Teacher of the Umfundalai technique, she has taught at various institutions, festivals and intensives, both nationally and internationally. Kemp has trained and performed with several notable artists and professional dance companies, including Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, Kariamu & Company: Traditions, Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers, Eleone Dance Theatre, Philadanco! The Philadelphia Dance Company, Urban Bush Women, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Rennie Harris Puremovement, The Katherine Dunham Seminar and The American Dance Festival to name a few. Most recently, she has appeared as a guest performing artist with Tabanka African and Caribbean Peoples Dance Ensemble in Oslo, Norway. Tabanka is Northern Europe's largest all black dance ensemble. Memorable quotes “The work we do involves your cognitive abilities to think well and sort out challenging situations for patients and calls and circumstances. You've got to lift people and move them and those kinds of things, so there's a whole physical component, and the stress management is absolutely part of the wellness, and if you don't kind of have a handle on that, there's a lot of stresses this world presents to you – and poorly managed stress, we know, tears down your physical, psychological and emotional wellness.” —Mike Taigman “If you're in EMS or fire and you can't carry the med box in one hand and the defibrillator in another up two flights of steps and you're gassed and you can't work when you get there, then you're useless. And, for police, if you can't wrestle with somebody because you're exhausted in 30 seconds, it's a problem.” —Kevin Pannell   Together, they offer tips like: Pay attention to your plant-to-processed food ratio Start with pushups. You don't need all the equipment they have at the CrossFit Games, Pannell notes. “You can get a smokin' workout from just you and the ground.” Or take a walk. Take a holistic approach to fitness (weightlifting, something that makes you breathe hard and stretching); it's about balance About our guests Mike Taigman uses more than four decades of experience to help EMS leaders and field personnel improve the care/service they provide to patients and their communities. Mike is the Improvement Guide for FirstWatch, a company which provides near-real time monitoring and analysis of data along with performance improvement coaching for EMS agencies.  He teaches Improvement Science in the Master's in Healthcare Administration and Interprofessional Leadership at the University of California San Francisco and the Emergency Health Services Management Graduate Program at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. On November 26th, 2019, the first Inside JABA Series podcast was published. This series was the brainchild of Dr. Linda LeBlanc, who at the time was the incoming Editor in Chief, and I have to say, doing these shows has been a highlight of producing this podcast.  As I remind people often, I'm not involved in the production or publication of Behavior Analytic research, so you can imagine how much I've learned about this process in making what is now 13 Inside JABA Series podcast episodes.  At the same time, it's been an incredible privilege to share these shows - including the papers we've hi-lighted therein - with you. At the time of this recording, Linda recently transitioned out of the role of Editor in Chief. This position is now filled by Dr. John Borrero, from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.  As such, for the 13th installment in this series, the three of us got together to discuss a range of nerdy JABA topics, including how editors-in-chief are selected, what repertoires make for successful editors-in-chief, how to manage the review process, and more.  We also talked about what makes a paper a "JABA paper." I think you might find some of Linda and John's thoughts on this surprising. Linda also shared a story on how she solved a specific clinical problem she encountered early on in her career by getting inspiration from the pages of JABA.  Finally, we closed the show by looking back on some of Linda's accomplishments and discussed where John sees JABA moving forward. I won't spoil it here, but let's just say he has some really cool ideas, so please be sure to tune in for that segment. Even if you're not involved in conducting and publishing research, I think you'll find the discussion of how our flagship journal works very interesting.  Lastly, as I have expressed numerous times, I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to work with the JABA team, and I look forward to working with John on future installments of the Inside JABA Series.
