In the five-plus years of the podcast, I'd say that we have spent a LOT of time on various “hot button” issues - I mean, we live quite squarely in the ones that surround race and identity, wouldn't you say? - but one of the facets of identity that we don't often explore is that of religion. Not because we don't want to talk about it, but a lot of times the opportunity doesn't really present itself. That's why we were so excited to talk to one of the authors of Healing Our Way Home, a new book that addresses white supremacy and identity through the lens of Black Buddhist teachings.  What started out as a series of conversations between three practitioners morphed into a whole book, focusing on self-care and Buddhist teachings with the goal of collective liberation in mind, but in a way that's totally different than what we've seen out there thus far.  Can't wait for you all to listen and learn more.   What to listen for: A brief explanation of the Buddhist history and teachings What it was like knowing Zen Master Thich Nhat Han Three powerful questions we should all be asking ourselves, as we work to remain centered in our own selves while experiencing the world in its current poly-crisis state. About the authors:    KAIRA JEWEL LINGO is a Dharma teacher with a lifelong interest in spirituality and social justice. Her work continues the Engaged Buddhism developed by Thich Nhat Hanh, and she draws inspiration from her parents' lives of service and her dad's work with Martin Luther King, Jr. After living as an ordained nun for 15 years in Thich Nhat Hanh's monastic community, Kaira Jewel now teaches internationally in the Zen lineage and the Vipassana tradition, as well as in secular mindfulness, at the intersection of racial, climate and social justice with a focus on activists, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, artists, educators, families, and youth. Based in New York, she offers spiritual mentoring to groups and is the author of We Were Made for These Times: Ten Lessons in Moving through Change, Loss and Disruption and co-author of the forthcoming, Healing Our Way Home: Black Buddhist Teachings on Ancestors, Joy and Liberation (Feb 2024) from Parallax Press. Her teachings and writings can be found at www.kairajewel.com.   VALERIE BROWN, True Sangha Power (pronouns she/her), is a Dharma teacher in the Plum Village tradition, ordained in 2018, and a member of Religious Society of Friends. She transformed her twenty-year, high-pressure career as a lawyer-lobbyist into human-scale, social-equity-centered work, guiding leaders and organizations to foster greater understanding, authenticity, compassion, and trust.   MARISELA B. GOMEZ is a co-founder of Village of Love and Resistance in Baltimore Maryland, organizing for power, healing, and the reclamation of land. She is a meditation and Buddhist teacher, physician-scientist, and holistic health practitioner. She lives in the lands previously stewarded by the Piscataway, Lumbi, and other tribes, colonized as Baltimore Maryland in the USA. She is the author of Race, Class, Power, and Organizing in East Baltimore along with other scholarly, political, and spiritual writings. We will take time to share great inspiring accounts and building moments of the Black Church and others, depicting religious traditions and spiritual awakenings that contributed to the foundation of the church and our faith today.  We will also explore great businessman and women of faith that contributed to the faith and made our communities better by pursuing their God-given purposes. At times we will share inspirational words to educate and encourage individuals on their journey of faith in God.We are introducing a series called "Black Solutionists", focusing on the individuals that took chances on pursuing their dreams and brought to our culture a wealth of knowledge and life lessons on success that made a difference in history and our world. We start our journey with Reginald F. Lewis, the first black billionaire (3 part)."The dream is free, but the hustle is sold separately." (Reginald F. Lewis) Reginald F. Lewis was born on December 7, 1942 in an East Baltimore neighborhood he once described as “semi-tough.” Lewis was strongly influenced by his family. His parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunts always encouraged Lewis to “be the best that you can be.” Reginald's grandmother would teach him the importance of saving, even cutting and peeling strips from the bottom of a tin can and nailing it to the floor of a closet to protect his savings. At the age of ten, Lewis set up a delivery route to sell the Afro American newspaper. After building the business from ten customers to more than a hundred in two years, he sold the route at a profit.Reginald attended Dunbar High School, where he distinguished himself as an athlete on the playing field and a hard working student in the class room. He was quarterback of the football team, shortstop for varsity baseball, a forward on the basketball team and was team captain of all three.  In 1961, Lewis entered Virginia State University on a football scholarship. In 1965, the Rockefeller Foundation funded a summer school program at Harvard Law School to introduce a select number of black students to legal studies. Reginald lobbied for his acceptance and got in. After graduation (HLS ‘68), Lewis landed a job practicing corporate law with a prestigious New York law firm. Two years later he, along with a few others, set up Wall Street's first African American law firm.A desire to "do the deals myself" led Lewis to establish TLC Group, L.P. in 1983. His first successful venture was the $22.5 million leveraged buyout of McCall Pattern Company. It was a struggling business in a declining industry.Just months after his first successful exit, Reginald F. Lewis's unknown two man team outbid huge firms like Citicorp to secure the purchase of Beatrice Foods (64 companies in 31 countries). At $985 million, the deal was the largest leveraged buyout of overseas assets by an American company at that time. By 1992, the company had sales of over $1.8 billion annually, making it the first black-owned business to generate a billion dollars in annual sales. To find out more about Reginal Lewis visit www.reginaldflewis.com. Why is this, and what can we do to finally make an impact? Co-founder of The Shared Humanity Project, Mark Bergel, is joining host Jamie Truman on this episode to answer these questions and more. He says that we've been addressing the poverty crisis all wrong, addressing the symptoms instead of the cause, exploiting those in poverty, and spending money on programs with no evidence that they'll be effective.Poverty has an impact on crime, education and more issues that affect our communities. In fact, 97% of people born into poverty in East Baltimore never get out of it, and poverty plays a role in three deaths per day.   In this episode, Mark shares the “truths of poverty” and The Shared Humanity Project's National Plan to End Poverty. You'll also learn how The Shared Humanity Project is amplifying the voices of those in poverty, becoming a resource of information, and aiming to make a difference in every local market. Tune in to find out how we as a society can merge compassion with action to alleviate poverty, and how to get involved with The Shared Humanity Project! Connect with The Shared Humanity Project:Website EmailLinkedIn Twitter Instagram Facebook Connect with Jamie at Truman Charities:FacebookInstagramLinkedInWebsiteYouTubeEmail: info@trumancharities.comThis episode was post produced by Podcast Boutique https://podcastboutique.com/

Growing up, Muggsy Bogues was always told he should do something else, anything besides basketball. He never acknowledged his many doubters except to prove them spectacularly wrong. Twenty years after receiving his first basketball as a toddler, he stood proud—at five-foot-three—as the starting point guard for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA. From the East Baltimore playground courts where he earned his nickname by muggin' opponents for possession of the ball to Dunbar High School where he excelled alongside future NBA players, Bogues set the tone in his early years for the great heights he'd reach professionally. In Muggsy: My Life from a Kid in the Projects to the Godfather of Small Ball (Triumph, 2022), Bogues delves deep into his life and career, reflecting on legendary battles with Michael Jordan, John Stockton, and other generational stars of '80s and '90s hoops. He shares far-ranging anecdotes from playoff runs in Charlotte, filming Space Jam, and even watching a young Steph Curry grow up. Conversational and clear-sighted, this is a story of uncompromising vision and fleet-footed determination during a golden era for the NBA. Paul Knepper covered the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020.
