If you're listening to a certain song and you hear an extreme tempo change, I say to myself: How can I incorporate that tempo change into the experience? When Jennifer Anderson became a mother, she - like many new parents - realised the uphill battle that can be mealtimes. Getting young kids to eat their greens, voluntarily, isn't always straightforward - and advice on how to encourage them is polarising. Do you force them to sit and finish their plate, bribe them with dessert... and at what point, do you just give up on the brussel sprouts? But Ms Anderson, a registered dietician, took that angst, and honed in on a specialty in feeding children and picky eating. She founded Kids Eat in Color - a resource to help families feed their children, from their first bite of solid food right through to elementary-aged nutrition needs.

In this episode of the Peaceful Parenting Podcast, I sit down with Jennifer Anderson, Registered Dietitian and founder of Kids Eat in Color. Jennifer, a leading expert in addressing picky eating and food anxiety in children, shares the importance of the 'division of responsibility' in feeding kids, noting that parents decide what food is provided, when, and where, but children decide if and how much they eat. We also talk about promoting healthy eating habits without instilling fear of 'bad food,' and explore how diet culture, neurodivergence, and parental fears can influence children's relationships with food. We talk about: [6:33] Why it's important to get kids to eat a variety of foods [10:15] Age as a factor in picky eating [11:50] Sensory issues with picky eating, and reasons kids might not just ‘grow out' of picky eating [16:31] Realizing our own capacity and releasing parental guilt [18:33] Child led exposure therapy vs. ARFID [19:45] The line between doing feeding therapy out of concern vs. pressuring kids into eating more [26:42] Two sides to a good relationship with food [28:04] Drawing the line between genuine needed concern and diet culture influence [33:28] Good food vs. Bad food [39:33] Suggestions for how parents can talk about food [42:48] Support families around feeling their kids are eating too much or little [55:45] Advice to her younger parent self As a mother, wife, registered dietitian, and founder of Kids Eat in Color®, Jennifer Anderson faced challenges in feeding her children, especially when her first child began falling off the growth chart. This experience led her to specialize in child nutrition and picky eating. After extensive research, she developed an approach involving small, evidence-based adjustments to mealtime routines that effectively reduced food-related stress. She established Kids Eat in Color and assembled a team of experts to offer practical strategies and resources to parents struggling with similar issues. Recognizing the impact of small changes and variety in a child's diet, her platform provides guides, courses, and tools to help parents manage mealtime challenges and promote their children's health. Christie Rocha's and Jennifer Anderson's Ah-Ha Moments “I am constantly reviewing the evidence and reading the research coming out every week. If at any point, I'm wrong, and certainly I have changed my position on things over time, I am more than happy to hear about it. I will acknowledge it, decide I will make a statement if I need to, I will change my position, and I will slowly shift over time.” -Jennifer “I've kind of just erred on not showing the kids until I'm really clear on how I want to show them. And I think that's ultimately what I'm getting from you is whatever you decide to do, just have the clarity and intention behind what you're doing.” -Christie More About Jennifer Anderson Jennifer Anderson is a mom of two, registered dietitian and has a masters of science in public health from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. In 2019, she founded Kids Eat in Color, a resource for families seeking evidence-based information and strategies on child nutrition and feeding. I recently saw a Kids Eat in Color post that talked about the Switch Witch. Do you know that tradition? Essentially, the Switch Witch allows kids to set out their extra candy and trade it in for a new toy.In the video, Jennifer says that the Switch Witch worked great for her oldest child - they loved getting a new toy and had no problem trading in their candy. But for her youngest, the whole idea was creating a lot of anxiety and damaging their relationship with food/candy.So, as we wrap up Halloween season, I want to invite you to consider what worked well for your family this year and what didn't. What traditions will you keep going? What will you drop next year?***Ready to get started with coaching?Learn more here. This is a public episode. As a mom and dietitian in the food freedom and body positivity space, I thought raising kids without food rules would be a sinch. But lately I've been overwhelmed by all the sugar! Is it okay to sneak healthy things into our kid's food? Whether it be in healthy muffins or a meatball, I know firsthand how tempting it is. We feel like our best option is often to sneak healthy foods in the foods our kids do willingly eat, all in the name of "getting" our kids to eat the foods that they otherwise won't. But is this best practice? Or does this backfire? Fellow moms may feel it is innocent enough and the benefits of sneaking healthy foods outweigh the cons of getting caught. That's why in this episode, I shed some light on what I advise as a feeding expert. I don't share this from a soapbox but rather from the trenches of feeding fussy eaters myself -- three for three, I understand this predicament firsthand with my own! However, if we are going to raise up the next generation to value health and fuel their bodies accordingly, it is important for us to really look at the short-term impact of "getting" our kids to eat healthy foods versus the long-term implications of fostering intrinsic motivation towards eating healthy foods. Want more support on how to build trust in the feeding relationship? Whether it be your child sneaking “forbidden foods” from you, or you are feeling the need to save a secret stash of “forbidden foods” until after bedtime (so your kids don't see), these posts can shed some light on how to handle such secrecy: Did you catch your kid with candy wrappers? How to handle hard situation (advice from a dietitian mom) Should you hide unhealthy snacks from your kids (like candy)? Sign up to work with me 1-on-1.
Our pediatricians hear it time and time again: “My child is a picky eater.” Many times, it starts when kids are young, which naturally creates worry for parents. “It's so innate in us that parents want to feed their children,” Dr. Dan Nicklas, our host, says. Researchers looked at the habits of children between 4 and 9 years old and found that because picky eaters don't tend to grow out of it, parents need to intervene before their child turns 2. When children reach the age of 1, the transition from formula or breast milk to whole milk and table food becomes a pivotal time, as children start forming opinions about food. In this episode, Stephanie Gilley, MD, and Rebecca McNab join us to provide strategies for navigating conversations with patients about their children and how they approach meals with their family. Dr. Gilley is a pediatric Clinical Nutrition Physician at Children's Hospital Colorado, as well as an assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Rebecca is an occupational therapist and certified lactation education counselor. They explain this is a journey many parents find themselves on without a single path, but there are ways to create healthy, intuitive relationships with food for their kids. There are many resources out there for parents to rely on but it's important to know what you're looking for. “Parents should not be following any account that makes them feel bad about what they are doing,” Dr. Gilley says. She suggests two resources in particular: Kids Eat in Color and Feeding Littles. Some highlights from this episode include: • Parent's responsibility versus child's responsibility • Importance of fostering a child's independence • Creative ways to make food exciting • How feeding disorders are different than picky eating Today's episode is underwritten by Aegon (ay-gone) Transamerica Foundation, a proud supporter of Charting Pediatrics and Children's Hospital Colorado. No better way to understand What Italian Kids Eat than speaking to two local Italian experts… age 4 and 8! My podcast guests today are a charming four-year-old girl, and an equally charming eight-year-old boy both born and raised in Rome, Italy. They give us the lowdown on what kids eat from breakfast to lunch to dinner, snack time (merenda), and what they eat when out at a restaurant. Riccardo and Sofia tell us all about what can't be missed at any and every Italian lunch, plus the special things kids eat when they're out at a restaurant. No Kids Menu here in Italy: kids order from an adult menu and mostly adult dishes, including Riccardo's current favorite, spaghetti with clam sauce. Do kids drink wine with their meal? No, but a few sips here and there are made available to all kids and because it's not forbidden most kids taste it and decide it's not for them and choose either water or a special out-to-dinner treat that's a kids favorite worldwide – Coca-Cola. Listen in for a fun and thoroughly charming episode that's also full of fascinating cultural information on Italian culinary tradition for children.
