It's time. We need to move different. We started the Pass The Mic podcast late in 2013, now, more than a decade later, the podcast as you've known it is coming to a close. This is not so much an ending, but an evolution. We still have several more episodes airing every other week, and after the final episode, Tyler will continue on with the podcast under a new name and with a new exciting focus and Jemar will make occasional appearances.   This episode is the announcement but not the ending. We're planning a live, online finale episode later this year that you will all be invited to.  So stay subscribed and stay tuned.  Let's address the natural question: WHY?!?  First, Jemar, Tyler, and Beau are all good.  There was no fallout, blowup, or disagreement that led to this decision.  We are glad to say that closing out Pass The Mic did not come as a result of interpersonal drama or conflict.  We have been engaged in this conversation for nearly a year. We reasoned together and concluded that this season of Pass The Mic has come to an end.  Then we gave each other the time and space to process both the bitter and the sweet that comes with such a significant transition. You'll hear it on this week's podcast episode, our genuine love and affection for one another has never been stronger.  Our deepest thanks for the labor, the wisdom, and the friendship of the whole team both seen and unseen who have made this show possible. So the shift is not about drama, it is about adapting.  This decision did not arise from a place of fear or scarcity but of health and growth. We've been saying for several episodes now that we have to move differently.  The culture is changing. Our political situation is in crisis. The church is being called to witness in a new way.  Tyler is doing life-shifting work as a pastor, and he has so many more ideas for other projects that he is now free to pursue. Beau is doing the vital work of storytelling employing imagination to spark conversation and joy. Check out his upcoming show at MidnightHTX.com. Ryan has a new day job, and is faithfully serving his church community. Jemar has been sensing the Holy Spirit moving him to do more online teaching and acting as a bridge between academic study and the church practice. Be sure to follow his next project  “The Justice Journey: A Biblical Guide to Making Wrong Things Right.”  We will, of course, miss Pass The Mic.  This has been part of our lives for more than ten years. We have had so many laughs, memories, and bonding moments.  Most importantly, you, our listeners and viewers, have been with us for the journey.  What we will miss most is the community we've formed around the show and the ways you all have encouraged us, challenged us, and loved us throughout this show.  In times when the broader evangelical and Reformed community rejected us for our commitment to Christ and the blackness he gifted us with, you have been our steady and supportive siblings in the faith.  Remember to keep listening. We still have more episodes coming, a live finale episode, and a new show by Tyler launching on the same podcast feed.  With gratitude for what lies behind and expectation for what lies ahead, we say:  See you soon on the next…? But Why Tho?We Have to Move DifferentlyThanks to Our Community Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"Stop Blaming White Cops?" Dr. Jemar Tisby & Pastor G. Tyler Respond to Pastor Philip Anthony Mitchell In this powerful and thought-provoking episode of Pass The Mic, hosts Dr. Jemar Tisby and G. Tyler Burns respond to controversial remarks made by Pastor Philip Anthony Mitchell in a recent sermon, where he stated: “Stop blaming white cops for the killing of Black children.” Jemar and G. Tyler unpack the implications of this statement, examining it through the lens of Black Christian ethics, systemic injustice, and the church's prophetic responsibility in addressing police violence and anti-Black racism. It's important to note that Pastor Mitchell has apologized for this statement, and they address his apology as well. They also reflect on how statements like these impact grieving communities, perpetuate harmful narratives, and reveal deeper tensions within American Christianity when it comes to race, justice, and pastoral leadership. In this thought-provoking episode of Pass The Mic, Dr. Jemar Tisby and Pastor G. Tyler Burns dive deep into the complicated dynamics of Black Christians being expected to offer absolution to white Christians in the face of racism. They explore how some Black Christian leaders have been pressured — or at times have chosen — to position themselves as brokers of racial reconciliation, often using the role to build platforms rather than pursuing genuine, hard truths about justice. The conversation also touches on the significance of preserving Black history and the dangers of suppressing it. In this conversation, Jemar Tisby discusses the historical and present-day challenges faced by Christians in addressing racism. He highlights the need for Christians to understand the history and culture of the communities they seek to serve, and the hypocrisy of advocating for justice abroad while ignoring injustice at home. Tisby also explores the personal sacrifices made by individuals who resisted racism and emphasizes the importance of honoring their legacy. He discusses the role of faith in promoting racial justice and the need for the church to take a bold stance against racism. We are taking a little time to gear up for the next round of episodes from Pass The Mic but did not want to leave you hanging. We've got back to back hits from the archives for you to enjoy in the meantime. New episodes return Feb 5th. With civil rights advocacy in his DNA, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism. As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Moss spent the last two decades practicing and preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality.  Dr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was recently recognized as one of the “12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World” by Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary. As part of his community engagement through Trinity United Church of Christ, Dr. Moss led the team that came up with the “My Life Matters” curriculum; which includes the viral video, “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival” created in the aftermath of Michael Brown's death at the hands of Ferguson, Missouri police. Dr. Moss was named to the inaugural Root 100, a list that “recognizes emerging and established African-American leaders who are making extraordinary contributions,” according to the publication's website. Honorees range between ages 25 to 45 and their accomplishments and successes transcend media headlines or statistics. With a unique gift to communicate across generations, Dr. Moss' creative Bible-based messages have inspired young and old alike. His intergenerational preaching gift has made Dr. Moss a popular speaker on college campuses, at conferences, and churches across the globe. He is highly influenced by the works of Zora Neale Hurston, August Wilson, Howard Thurman, Jazz, and Hip-Hop music. The work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the pastoral ministry of his father, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, have been primary mentors for his spiritual formation. The founder of Unashamed Media Group, a justice centered, faith-based agency committed to producing and curating stories to inspire the heart and challenge the mind, Dr. Moss is the recipient of a 2016 NAACP Image award for his work, which includes providing biblical context and theological support to a myriad of groups and causes, including the #BlackLivesMatter and the #Occupy movements. His earlier publications include: Redemption in a Red Light District, and The Gospel According to the Wiz: And Other Sermons from Cinema. He co-authored The Gospel Re-Mix; How to Reach the Hip-Hop Generation with three other contributors, and Preach! The Power and Purpose Behind Our Praise, with his father. He is married to his college sweetheart, the former Monica Brown of Orlando, Florida, a Spelman College and Columbia University graduate. They are the proud parents of two creative and humorous children, Elijah Wynton and Makayla Elon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

We've got back to back hits from the archives for you to enjoy in the meantime. New episodes return Feb 5th. Becoming Brave with Dr. Brenda Salter Mcneil (ARCHIVES): What a special guest we have on the podcast today! If you are familiar with the conversation about reconciliation and justice in the church, you won't get very far without hearing the name, the Rev. Dr. Brenda Salter Mcneil.  Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil is a dynamic speaker, author, professor and reconciliation thought leader. Her mission is to inspire, equip and empower the next generation of Christian leaders to be practitioners of reconciliation. Dr. Brenda is an international trailblazer, leading individuals, communities, and organizations to biblical reconciliation. She was featured as one of the 50 most influential women to watch by Christianity Today in 2012. She is the author of Roadmap to Reconciliation 2.0, A Credible Witness: Reflections on Power, Evangelism and Race (2008), and The Heart of Racial Justice: How Soul Change Leads to Social Change (2005), coauthored with Rick Richardson. Her newest book Becoming Brave: Finding the Courage to Pursue Racial Justice Now is available August 2020. Becoming Brave offers a distinctly Christian framework for addressing systemic injustice. It challenges Christians to be everyday activists who become brave enough to break the silence and work with others to dismantle systems of injustice and inequality. Looking through the lens of the biblical narrative of Esther, McNeil challenges Christian reconcilers to recognize the particular pain in our world so they can work together to repair what is broken while maintaining a deep hope in God's ongoing work for justice. This book provides education and prophetic inspiration for every person who wants to take reconciliation seriously. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

If you listened to our 5 part mini series 'Not The Voice, The Microphone: The Pass The Mic Story', the style of this episode will be very familiar to you. In honor of MLK day, we wanted to revisit a 'cannon event' from Pass The Mic's history that we unfortunately did not have time to discuss in the miniseries but definitely deserves a spotlight. This week Dr. Jemar Tisby is joined by Executive Producer Beau York to share an oral history of sorts from their experiences in Memphis, TN 50 years after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. At the time, two events took place that weekend. Both named MLK50. One was put on by the National Civil Rights Museum that brought together activists, thought leaders, and veterans from the Civil Rights movement of the past and present. The other was put on by the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. They went to the former, but definitely have thoughts on the latter. Enjoy.
