On today's podcast: 1) Nvidia slides after it warns Trump's curbs on China chips will cost it billions. The US government has restricted Nvidia from selling its H20 chip in China, escalating the tech battle between Washington and Beijing. Restrictions and trade war concerns are expected to negatively impact chip-sector earnings and China's ambitions to compete on the global tech stage.2) China says it is open to trade talks if President Trump's Administration shows more respect. China wants the US to show more respect by reining in disparaging remarks by members of Trump's cabinet before agreeing to trade talks. Beijing also wants a more consistent US position and a willingness to address China's concerns around American sanctions and Taiwan.3) Investors await a key speech by Fed Chair Jay Powell. Powell is making a speech in Chicago as traders look for hints on how the Fed will manage rates as President Trump aims to implement his tariff policy, and they're also following retail sales data today.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Transit officials say the fake red curbs being painted at different locations around the City are stretching the agency's resources as it has to respond and re-paint the curbs the proper length. The red zones are appearing just before intersections, where parking is now prohibited following a new daylighting law which just went into effect. But, the agency initially said it didn't have the budget to paint all the curbs. For more, KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier.

Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers The Hour of Charm, radio's “most-celebrated all-girl orchestra” first took to the air on May 18th, 1934 over CBS. In the fall of 1944 it was airing on NBC for General Electric, Sundays at 10PM eastern time. The brainchild of Phil Spitalny, The Spitalnys had a deep musical heritage. Immigrants from Russia, they had settled in Cleveland, where Phil Spitalny and his brother Leopold played in local bands. By the time Phil was 30, Spitalny had directed a 50-piece symphony orchestra in Boston, had led bands in theaters, on radio, and in recording sessions, and had just completed a successful world tour. The Hour of Charm's featured player was Evelyn Kaye Klein, billed as “Evelyn and Her Magic Violin.” The orchestra specialized in familiar music, played in a style described by Spitalny as a cross between popular and symphonic. All of the girls sang in chorus, some solo, and all were proficient on more than one instrument. Jan Baker could play a dozen instruments; she took on the tuba and mastered it when Spitalny could find no woman to play it even after a nationwide search. Spitalny's hiring practices were influenced by voice and good looks, but musicianship was always his first consideration. “No performer is hired who can't give a finished rendition of two sonatas and two concetti, who hasn't the individual gifts of rhythm and melodic perception, who can't read music fluently, and who hasn't had a good deal of experience,” said his 1940 Current Biography entry. He was also looking for “sweetness and charm,” and it is doubtful that any other orchestra has ever been so stringently governed. The girls were not allowed to marry: they signed contracts to that effect, agreeing to stay single for two years. They wore uniform attire, with the exception of the three principals, Evelyn, Vivien, and Maxine. They wore evening gowns, with no jewelry, their hair styled in “long, soft bobs.” No one would weigh more than 122 pounds. Curbs were enforced on personal behavior, with Evelyn in charge of backstage disputes and Spitalny handling such professional matters as musical arrangements, themes, and dress. “Associations in the all-girl orchestra are much like sorority life,” wrote Evelyn in a 1942 Radio Life article. A committee of five was formed to pass judgment on all offstage matters, including dating. “Whenever a girl wants to go out, she goes to the committee and says, ‘I want a date with Mr. So-and-So.' They ask her who the man is, what he does, and for references. If he passes muster, she gets her date. But if the committee feels that it would hurt the orchestra for a member to be seen with that man, the engagement doesn't materialize.” Spitalny staunchly defended the musicianship of all his girls, and he once bet bandleader Abe Lyman $1,000 that they could outplay Lyman's all-male group. The women had professional pride, said Spitalny: they didn't have problems with alcohol, and, when the war broke out, his was the only band in the land that didn't have trouble with the draft. He continued lecturing newcomers about the need to be good; they had to be better than their male counterparts to be taken seriously. If a man muffed a note, nobody cared; if a woman did, the attitude was “well, what can you expect?” The show opened and closed with hymns, especially during the war. The opening theme was “The American Hymn of Liberty,” the closer, often a favored hymn of someone in the service. This gave the show a serious, almost solemn air. The closing signature blended out of the theme and into the song We Must Be Vigilant, sung by the orchestra to the tune of American Patrol. Spitalny married Evelyn in June 1946. They lived in Miami, where Spitalny died in 1970.

I recently had a deeply insightful conversation with Dawn Apuan on the Wealthy Wellthy Podcast. Dawn's story will resonate with anyone who's ever felt stuck in their financial situation, wondering if there's a way out. Dawn was living on $2,700 a month as a pastor, barely making ends meet for her family of six. After the birth of her daughter, she realized she couldn't continue in the same situation, emotionally or financially. This led her to explore ways to work from home, and in an unexpected twist, she found a path to entrepreneurship. Her journey started with a small investment in an online course and a lot of self-teaching. In a few short months, Dawn went from making $3,000 in eight months to $35,000 by the end of the year. But what truly transformed her was the shift in her mindset—from scarcity to abundance. It was no longer about “just getting by,” but about learning new skills and expanding her belief in what was possible. In our conversation, Dawn talks candidly about the mental shifts she had to make, from overcoming limiting beliefs around money to learning how to value herself and her work. She shares how, despite her fears and doubts, she invested in herself and kept pushing forward—proving that anyone can rewrite their financial story with the right mindset and effort. http://krisstina.com/call I am offering you the same CURBS program that changed Dawn's life for $500-$1,000 OFF before the official launch on October 10th.If you're interested in joining, saving a lot of your hard-earned money, and being guided through a proven financial blueprint to eliminate money-stress, and building unshakable wealth regardless of the economy click this link to book our quick 15-minute chat to discuss your unique situation and see if you're right for the community. In this episode, I open up about the dark moments that shaped my path, from losing everything and struggling to support my family, to discovering the principles that have allowed me to not just survive, but to thrive. I share how I turned my biggest failures into lessons that now guide my approach to money, health, and life. One of the most pivotal moments in my journey was when I realized that money isn't just about numbers—it's about mindset and behavior. Growing up in a challenging environment, I developed an intense drive to succeed, but that success came at a cost. I found myself in the same financial stress despite earning more money than I ever thought possible. This realization forced me to rethink everything I knew about money, and I learned the hard way that financial success without the right habits and understanding leads to a vicious cycle of earning and spending without true fulfillment. I discuss the irony of achieving financial success while sacrificing my health, leading to a complete collapse that taught me the true value of balance and the importance of investing in myself. This was when I developed the CURBS method, a system designed to help you manage your money in a way that builds real wealth and security. I also talk about the concept of "lifestyle creep"—the tendency for expenses to rise along with income—and how mastering spending is more crucial than simply earning more. Money, as I've come to understand, is a mirror that reflects our values and intentions. When managed well, it can lead to fulfillment and happiness; when misunderstood, it can cause anxiety and stress. That's why I emphasize the importance of knowing your "Good Enough" number—a concept that's crucial for financial peace of mind. Understanding how much is truly enough for you is key to living a life that's rich in every sense of the word, not just financially.

He explains that the idea for the system came about when his wife broke her leg and struggled with getting in and out of the shower. The Rapid Recess System uses steel brackets to recess the plywood floor between floor joists, allowing for the installation of thin shower trays or pans. Erlbach emphasizes that curbless showers are common in Europe and are more accessible and aesthetically pleasing than traditional showers with curbs. He also addresses the challenges of getting installers to adopt the system and the importance of educating customers about the benefits of curbless showers.TakeawaysCurbless showers provide accessibility and aesthetic benefits compared to traditional showers with curbs. The Rapid Recess System uses steel brackets to recess the plywood floor between floor joists, allowing for the installation of thin shower trays or pans.Curbless showers are common in Europe and are more accessible and aesthetically pleasing.Getting installers to adopt curbless shower systems can be challenging due to resistance to change and lack of knowledge.Educating customers about the benefits of curbless showers and offering them as an option can lead to increased customer satisfaction and home value.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background01:10 The Benefits of Curbless Showers03:26 Curbless Showers in Europe vs. the US06:11 Challenges of Getting Installers to Adopt Curbless Shower Systems10:53 Educating Customers about the Benefits of Curbless ShowersSupport the Show.website: https://homedesignsforlife.com/Email: homedesignsforlife@gmail.com

It's an ex-English teacher's dream novel, a book about books! We discuss outlining, how much she knows what she's doing, without trying to limit the places her characters could take her. Also, we chat through how how she has learned as an author, and what she wants to change about the way she works. You can hear why she finds pictures online to inspire her characters, what it's like to work with an editor, and how far the finished book is from her very first idea.Support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Too young to scroll? French panel calls for curbs on screen time for youth

Concerns over "too much screen time" for youngsters are nothing new. In pre-internet days, young people sometimes saw their TV viewing curtailed as a punishment. But it's now been three decades since mobile phones went mainstream, and nearly two since the advent of the tablet and the smartphone. Many teachers and psychiatrists link long hours of scrolling and exposure to violent and pornographic images, as well as cyberbullying, anxiety and sleep deprivation among a generation whose attention span has shrunk. We ask about a panel that has just submitted recommendations to France's president, starting with a ban on smartphones for under-13s. What's the right measure in our connected world? What responsibility for parents, teachers and the tech giants whose entire business model rests on keeping us on our screens as long as possible? Can curbs really be enforced? Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Rebecca Gnignati and Juliette Brown.

Too often our stories about China are dictated by the urban experience, probably because journalists inside and outside of China are often based in the big cities; Beijing specifically. Those who live in the cities also tend to be more educated, more privileged, and so able to dominate the global attention more.  That's why I'm particularly keen to hear about the lives of those who still live in the countryside, or at least are still considered ‘rural residents' by the Chinese government. They make up a sizeable proportion of the population, and you'll hear that in my first question to my guest today, we discuss just how big this group is. How do the poorest in China live today, considering the government has announced that there is no more extreme poverty? Just how wide are their gaps in living standards, education, health, compared to their compatriots who live in the cities?  Professor Scott Rozelle joins me on this episode. He is the co-director of the Stanford Center on China's Economy and Institutions, a developmental economist who has been conducting research in China for over three decades. He is also the co-author of Invisible China: How the Urban-Rural Divide Threatens China's Rise. No artificial anything, no sweetener, no caffeine; it's all top quality ingredients and a clean label. It is also slightly more alkaline than typical sparkling water.  There are actually 11 clinical trials and over 2 decades of research behind GOOD IDEA. The discovery is the specific ratio of amino acids and chromium picolinate. At first, they discovered pairing the chromium with the 5 amino acids was dropping post-meal blood sugar by about 10% while keeping insulin levels at the same rate as placebo; after perfecting the ratio, it improved to reduce post-meal blood sugar by 20-30% or more for some people.  Purchase Good Idea here: https://www.goodidea.us/discount/KETOKAMP use the coupon code KETOKAMP for 10% off your order.
