Welcome to How Do You Talk to Someone When, our second Special Episode from Counsel Culture Podcasts. We will be navigating our way through each of these episodes, covering topics relevant to situations we all find ourselves in regularly. Some of these situations can be difficult to know how to handle, and we may struggle to know what to say. Perhaps you may have come away from conversations and wish you could take back something you said. Or perhaps you find yourself just avoiding the tougher topics of conversation? In this episode we're asking the question: “How do you talk to someone when…..they are dealing with depression?”It's estimated that over 20 million Australians are living with anxiety or depression. Beyond Blue reports that One in seven Australians will experience depression in their lifetime, and alarmingly, More than nine people die each day in Australia by suicide. Many around us are dealing with depression and we would never know. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health. In this episode, we'll be hearing from a few different people, and I thank them for their bravery and openness in talking us through their experience and sharing their wisdom. Mike, who loved and cared for someone with depression for many years. Chris Cipollone, who has lived with depression himself for a lot of his life and who's been a pastor, a speaker and an author on the subject. And then Professor Karen E. Mason, who is an expert in the theory and practice of integrating Christian faith, depression and suicide prevention. This UNCUT Conversation is with Chris Cipollone. He has served as a pastor in Sydney for over a decade and has also been living with depression for a similar amount of time. He's written a book, which I highly recommend: ‘Down Not Out: Depression, Anxiety and the Difference Jesus Makes' which explores how an identity in Christ impacts our thoughts, feelings and attitudes towards mental health.

This week Val and Rachel discuss The Heights, an American musical drama series that aired Thursday at 9:00 pm on the Fox network from August to November 1992. The Heights centered on a fictional band (also called The Heights) made up of mostly working-class young adults. Episodes regularly featured one of their songs. The eventual theme song for the show, "How Do You Talk to an Angel" (sung by cast member Jamie Walters), went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was the first song from a television show to top the Hot 100 since 1985, as well as the first song by a fictional band to top the Hot 100 since 1969. The Heights premiered on August 27, 1992, to low ratings, and never gained a substantial audience. Fox canceled the series less than a week after the theme song fell from the number one spot. Hot Topics Include: 1.) Holiday Birthdays 2.) Halloween Date Drama 3.) Val and Rachel disagree! 4.) Tom Shales' scathing TV review of The Heights 5.) Offscreen Suburb Drama at Rachel's House 6.) Song clip from "Natalie O, She's Pretty" 7.) Comparisons to Melrose Place and Thirtysomething 8.) Jamie Walters post-Hollywood career pivots WARNING: Rachel sings a LOT in this one. How Do You Talk to Your Kids About 9/11? Many of adults have memories about where they were when the planes crashed into the Twin Towers. But for an entire generation of kids and teens, 9/11 is less of a memory, and more of a whisper. That's because they were either infants at the time of the attacks, or had yet to be born. So we wanted to know how our listeners – parents and teachers – talk about 9/11 with the kids in their lives. We know playing “Bad Guys” is an integral part of early childhood development — but, as some older kids who are more exposed to the media know, real people can do bad things, too. We had planned to release a “Bad Guys” episode of Ear Snacks on Valentine’s Day, but first we wanted to explain to you, the parents, how and why we are approaching such a difficult topic, especially in the wake of last week’s tragedy in Parkland, Florida. This episode is not intended for kids. Jane Lindholm hosts Vermont Edition and But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids from Vermont Public Radio. Like Ear Snacks, But Why usually speaks to kids directly about the real world, but last year they released an episode for parents entitled “How Do You Talk to Kids About Violence in the News?” We spoke with Jane about about creating this episode, how media creators can address difficult topics with kids, and about her own experience as a parent of two young children. We share an excerpt from an interview with an older listener (Grey, 8) that won’t be included in next week’s “Bad Guys” episode, but it illustrates how older kids begin to understand the distinction between pretend evil-doers and people in the real-world who treat others in scary, unkind ways. We reference Dr. Robin Gurwitch (child psychologist at Duke University), Teacher Tom Hobson (early childhood educator & author), and Eric Hoffman’s book “Magic, Capes, Amazing Powers: Transforming Superhero Play in the Classroom” — oh, and we also feature an impromptu visit from 9-month-old guest percussionist. We'd love to talk more with you - if you have any comments, feedback or anything to share, please reach us via e-mail or on social media - on Twitter @andrewypolly or on Facebook.
