You may think you know what Hula is, but you might want to rethink your concept of it. From its origins as a spiritual practice for Hawaiian culture, the Hula has been used by tourism to exploit and promote a "Hula girl" image that is in real life not accurate at all. We talk about the history of this dance as an art form and cultural tradition and discuss the exploration and misperceptions of the "hula girl" that was created by tourism and capitalism. It's everything from mythology to misogyny and how we can be better advocates and tourists in Hawaii.Misperceptions of the Hula Girl by Noah DolimEpisodes to check out after this one: The Political Power of Dance, Margaret Keane, Anna May WongWant to check out some of our favorite books? It's 1958 and America is rife with fads. Everyone's looking to make a quick buck with the next big thing, and Wham-O's struck gold with the hula hoop. But the hula hoop has a long, and sometimes sordid history. At the heart of America's love affair with the hula hoop is the often-forgotten pop-culture ICON Joan Anderson, who first introduced the hoop to Wham-O, only to be written out of history. Co-director of the documentary ‘Hula Girl', Amy Hill, is here to tell Joan's tale. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In episode two of season four I chat with fashion and costume designer Katie-Louise Nicol-Ford, seamstress extraordinaire and co-founder of demi-couture label, Nicol + Ford. Costume as a cache for creativity came to Katie-Louise early in life, starting with the character of “Hula Girl”, but as we turn the pages of her colourful story and observe the various personas she's played with along the way, we see her current role firmly lands her as the leading lady of her own glamorous narrative. No matter which role she takes on to the outside world, for Katie-Louise, fantasy & empowerment go hand-in-hand, characterise her source of self-confidence and are critical in defining her spirited style. View my shoot with Katie-Louise at MadeleinePark.co. Produced by MITT Work.

Although Eddie was content working in Chicago, the allure of the islands was a persistent temptation. The other tattooers were getting ready to jump ship for warmer climates in California, and Tommy was ready to board a plane for Honolulu shortly after tattooing a Hula Girl on Eddie's back.
