The A-72 base supported Pathfinder missions to guide bomber crews to success via the Oboe System. The German Army began a surprise counter attack in Belgium's Ardennes Forest at day break on December 16. Their early, deep and desperate incursions, described as a "Last Gamble," were an attempt to capture the port of Antwerp and cut allied supply lines. The 597th Bomber Squadron flew intense air support to help repel the Axis army of older men and boys. Stanley's training to fly the B-26, Martin Marauder, at Barksdale Army Air Base, in Shreveport, LA. Barksdale is home to the 2nd Bomb Wing, which flew with Billy Mitchell during his 1921 flying exhibition with Glenn L. Martin. The King & his crew will ship to Hunter Field in Georgia as it prepares to travel across the Atlantic Ocean to the European Theater of Operations. This is episode five of the final review of Stanley's War. It's January 1944 and The Silver King graduates from Bomber School in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He's now a 2nd Lt. in the U. S. Army Air Corps. Then it's five months for advance training at Columbia Army Air Base in South Carolina. As the allies invade Europe with Operation Overload in early June, Stanley has orders to report at Barksdale Army Air Base in Shreveport for B-26 training. He now has what he wants: The Martin Marauder. He wrote two descriptive, thoughtful letters from France about his hours and days at the "Lucky Strike" camp in Le Harve. It's been two months with no mail and Stanley is ready for Ida Mae's home cooking. He hopes to ride one of "The Queens" west over the Atlantic from Antwerp. It may be a ship to New York harbor or a flight to Miami. He hasn't received any mail in a month. He's bored, frustrated and gaining points as he waits (77 to 85). The war in Europe ended in early May. Three months later after many rumors and disappointments, Stanley writes that he should be home soon. News from the Pacific about Japan's imminent surrender is a welcome subject in his second August letter.
