There is a stink rising over the United Kingdom's second-largest city. Garbage has piled up for a month in Birmingham during a dispute between the city and its trash collectors. It is a sore sight for the eyes and offensive to the nose. Mountains of garbage are said to be visible from space, and people have complained of seeing rats as big as cats in the refuse. “You can see the juice flowing out of the bags onto the road. It stinks,” Naeem Yousef said. “It's bringing down the areas. People are saying, ‘Look at these areas, how dirty these people are.'” Members of Unite, the union representing garbage truck workers, walked off the job on March 11 over the elimination of a job position and painful pay cuts. The council said it had made a reasonable offer, that cuts would only affect a small number of jobs, and the jobs being eliminated were unnecessary. The Labour-run Birmingham City Council is effectively bankrupt because of a settlement over historic pay discrimination. As a result, it's had to make significant budget cuts of 300 million pounds ($383 million) over two years and is only providing services required by law, including waste collection. As heaps of black bags littered sidewalks, with their contents spilling out of holes chewed by critters, the city council declared a major incident to bring in additional cleanup crews and vehicles. Photos on news sites and social media show furniture, mattresses and car bumpers illegally dumped alongside bulging trash bags. In one neighborhood, garbage sacks were set ablaze. “Our priority is tackling the misery and disruption for residents,” Angela Rayner, Deputy Prime Minister, said. “It is essential to protect public health by tackling the backlog of waste.” Kevin Hollinrake, a Conservative Member of Parliament, said the situation was “a national embarrassment” and could become a public health emergency. Introducing Is Being a Politician the Worst Job in the World? from The New Yorker Radio Hour.Follow the show: The New Yorker Radio HourOn July 4th—while the U.S. celebrates its break from Britain—voters in the United Kingdom will go to the polls and, according to all predictions, oust the current government. The Conservative Party has been in power for fourteen years, presiding over serious economic decline and widespread discontent. The narrow, contentious referendum to break away from the European Union, sixty per cent of Britons now think, was a mistake. Yet the Labour Party shows no inclination to reverse or even mitigate Brexit. If the Conservatives have destroyed their reputation, why won't Labour move boldly to change the direction of the U.K.? Is the U.K. hopeless? David Remnick is joined by Rory Stewart, who spent nine years as a Conservative Member of Parliament, and now co-hosts the podcast “The Rest Is Politics.” He left the government prior to Brexit and wrote his best-selling memoir, “How Not to Be a Politician,” which pulls no punches in describing the soul-crushing sham of serving in office. “It's not impostor syndrome,” Stewart tells Remnick. “You are literally an impostor, and you're literally on television all the time claiming to understand things you don't understand and claiming to control things you don't control.” DISCLAIMER: Please note, this is an independent podcast episode not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced in conjunction with the host podcast feed or any of its media entities. British politicians love to invoke the family, from John Major's "Back to Basics" campaign, to New Labour's "hardworking families" - and now a prominent strain of the Conservative right says parents sticking together for the sake of the children is "the only possible basis for a safe and successful society". By turning family values into a political football, are they in denial about the way society has developed this century? For decades, single-person households have been the fastest-growing demographic and younger generations are re-defining romantic commitments and their purpose. Is the erosion of traditional structure around marriage and family a destructive thing for society, or does it offer the kind of freedom and individual choice denied to previous generations? GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: Maxime Bernier is leader of The People's Party of Canada which was launched by on 14 September 2018, and officially recognized by Elections Canada on 18 January 2019. Maxime Bernier worked for 19 years in the private sector, mostly in insurance, banking and financial regulation, before he was elected as a Conservative Member of the Canadian Parliament in 2016. He was Minister of Industry, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism in the Harper government. In 2018, he left the Conservative Party, which he considered "morally and intellectually corrupt", and founded the People's Party of Canada, which promotes a principled conservative, libertarian and populist platform. Bernier was the only federal party leader opposed to the COVID hysteria during the past two years. Can the Conservative Party escape its existential crisis? On this week's #NCFWhittle we are joined by one of parliament's leading political thinkers, traditionalist conservative Danny Kruger MP, Conservative Member of Parliament for Devizes and sometime political secretary to then Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Mr. Kruger's new book is "Covenant: The New Politics of Home, Neighbourhood and Nation", in which he offers a thoughtful and rounded call for a conservatism that values family and community over self-interest and social atomisation: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Covenant-Pol... Kruger tells us that contemporary conservatism can easily be seen as a hollowed-out creed. Combining heartless free-market individualism with an unthinking social liberalism - or else simple authoritarian populism - it offers little to those whose sense of meaning is securely rooted in their families, communities and country. Kruger argues that we must restore the sources of virtue and belonging that underpin the good life by repairing the covenantal relationships of love and partnership that underpin our families, local communities and ultimately our country. We must, he contends, go beyond a politics based purely on individual autonomy, social atomisation and self-worship. By examining the most fundamental questions of love, sex, life and death, ranging from marriage to assisted dying, Kruger charts a course towards a conservatism that can respond humanely and wisely to the social, environmental and economic crises that face us. This riposte to both liberal orthodoxy and the authoritarian right is unmissable for anyone interested in British politics. It's a key contribution to the debate on how the Conservative Party can respond to its current crisis. What's at stake in the next general election for UK climate policy? Listen to Jason Mitchell discuss with Rt. Hon. Chris Skidmore MP, former Minister and Chair of the UK Net Zero Review, about why it's critical that the UK maintain its international climate leadership; what should the UK do about domestic oil and gas production in another energy security crisis; and how the UK can respond to the US and EU clean energy stimulus programmes. The Right Honourable Chris Skidmore is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Kingswood. He was the UK's former Energy and Clean Growth Minister attending cabinet who signed the UK's net zero commitment into law in June 2019, and also served as Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation twice between 2018 and 2020. In September 2022 he was appointed Chair of the Net Zero Review, an independent review into the delivery of UK net zero climate commitments. The report of the review, Mission Zero, was published in January 2023.
In a first for our podcasts, we delve into the world of government and parliament. RCPCH President Camilla Kingdon speaks with Dame Andrea Leadsom MP, Conservative Member of Parliament for South Northamptonshire about her experiences of advocating for infant and child health. Dame Andrea wants every baby to have the best start in life - a message shared by the College. She chaired the Government's Early Years Healthy Development Review and its March 2021 report, The best start for life, a vision for the 1001 critical days, outlines areas for action to improve the health outcomes of all babies in England, including new Family Hubs. She now chairs the Start for Life Unit, a team of civil servants tasked with implementing the review's recommendations. Dame Andrea talks with Camilla about her experiences of championing infant and child health in Parliament, and why she's so passionate and focused on this early period of life. Camilla asks how paediatricians can use their voice to support policy change, particularly where there are competing priorities, and how to consider poverty's impact on child health outcomes. Ensuring decision-makers introduce the best public policy for children and young people is an important part of our work at RCPCH. We engage regularly with Ministers, senior civil servants, MPs, Lords and advisers on a wide range of matters. On some occasions, like this one, that will mean engaging with individuals from specific political parties. However, we never endorse political parties or movements, and work with representatives of all parties equally and that remains the case with this podcast. We are grateful to Dame Andrea for sharing her views as someone with a central role in government policymaking on early years. Do keep an eye out on our podcasts for future conversations with policymakers from across the political spectrum. God Save the King and Rule Britannia! To mark the occasion of the crowning of Britain's new king and Canada's new head of state, this episode features a special guest from the other side of the Atlantic.Ann Widdecombe served as a Conservative Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons from 1987-2010. During that time, she held several Cabinet portfolios, and early on in her tenure, converted to the Catholic faith. She also held a seat in the European Parliament as a representative of the Brexit Party from 2019-2020.A well-known political commentator and public personality, Widdecombe makes the case for why Britain's withdrawal from the European Union was necessary (and why it was fully in line with Catholic social teaching on subsidiarity). Concern is growing about Elnaz Rekabi, the 33-year-old Iranian athlete who competed in South Korea on Sunday without a mandatory hijab. On social media today, Rekabi said there was a problem climbing with the covering, apologized, and said she was returning to Iran. Now rights groups based abroad are raising the alarm about what might happen to her once she's home. It comes amid ongoing protests by Iranian women and male allies, sparked by the death of police custody of Mahsa Amini. Amini was an Iranian Kurd, and that community has borne the brunt of the regime's crackdown. Now some are fleeing across the border to Iraqi Kurdistan and joining armed opposition groups. Correspondent Nima Elbagir traveled there to learn more about this budding insurgency. Nicola Rollock, Professor of Social Policy and Race at King's College London and an expert on racial justice, has a book out, The Racial Code: Tales of Resistance and Survival. in which she explores the hidden rules of race and racism, how they maintain the status quo, the pain and cost of navigating everyday racism and how to truly achieve racial justice. The Crown Prosecution Service has apologised unreservedly to a woman whose rape case was dropped after defence lawyers claimed she had an episode of a rare sleep walking condition called ‘sexsomnia'. In what is believed to be the first case of its kind in the UK - the CPS now says it was wrong to drop the case and it should have gone to court. The BBC followed Jade McCrossen-Nethercott's case as events unfolded over three years. Emma speaks to Jade and Emma Ailes, the producer and director of the BBC 3 documentary : SEXSOMNIA: CASE CLOSED? about why she began following Jade's case. The Home Secretary Suella Braverman has signalled that she may consider giving anonymity to criminal suspects as she feels a “media circus” jeopardises a fair trial. Speaking to an audience of Young Conservatives at the Conservative Conference in Birmingham, her comments came in answer to a question referring to the high profile cases of singer Sir Cliff Richard and Harvey Proctor, a former Conservative Member of Parliament, who were falsely accused of sexual abuse and never charged. Currently, alleged victims of sexual offences receive lifelong anonymity under UK law but there is no law against naming a suspect. So what effect would it have, particularly on women, if anonymity were given? Joining Emma is Lady Nourse who was cleared of 17 counts of historical child sex abuse involving a boy under the age of 12 in 2021, and Mark Williams-Thomas, an investigative journalist and former detective who exposed Jimmy Savile as a paedophile. When was the last time you tried something completely new? After over a decade in the music industry, 4 successful albums, and a Mercury Prize nomination under her belt, Nadine Shah has turned her hand to acting for the first time. The singer, songwriter, and musician talks to Emma Barnett about fear of failure, updating Shakespeare, and learning to act for her debut role as Titania in Matthew Dunster and Jimmy Fairhurst's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. It's exactly a month since Liz Truss became leader of the conservative party and today she makes her first speech in that new role to the party faithful at their conference in Birmingham later this morning. Instead of the usual honeymoon period a new leader can expect to enjoy she has been beset by adverse publicity after the unveiling of chancellor's mini budget almost two weeks ago. It led to huge market unrest with the pound plunging to record lows against the dollar. Emma speaks to Kirsty Buchanan, her former Special Advisor.

This is our latest interview with the political figures grappling with what happens when a right-wing party succeeds with an economically populist offer. Jake Berry is Conservative Member of Parliament for Rossendale and Darwen, and leads the Northern Research Group - the collection of Tory MPs representing constituencies in the traditionally Labour-dominated north of England. The NRG seeks to petition its party to make good on the higher spending 'side-of-the-bus' populism of Brexit. We ask whether Boris Johnson's Conservative Party really differs from previous incarnations, how the Jeremy Corbyn moment looked from the other side, and get Jake's view of new left experimentation in local government in the north, such as the 'Preston Model'. Help us continue! Follow us everywhere!
