It's tempting to think that we just need to wait out this broken world until Jesus comes back, to think that joy only begins with heaven. But the apostle Peter tells us that right now, even during our struggles and challenges, an inexpressible joy is possible. We're continuing our word of the year series with a focus on the word JOY this week. (Be sure to listen to last week's episode on Trust and Isaiah 40 if you missed it). This week, I want to introduce you to a study tool in the back of your Bible called the concordance. A concordance is an alphabetical index of words used in the Bible and the main Bible references where the word occurs. This week, I'm using my concordance to help me study the word joy. I loved this phrase in my concordance. It's from 1 Peter 1:6 and it says, “an inexpressible and glorious joy.” Inexpressible and glorious? That is the kind of joy that I want to find! That is the kind of joy that I want to invite all of you to find as well. I flipped back over to 1 Peter, and much to my surprise, even though this is a familiar passage, it still struck me anew when I read it. So let me read you our passage for today, and then we're going to walk through our Bible study method. This joy is intriguing because it's mentioned in the context of suffering and trials, challenging us to understand how we can experience such profound joy amidst difficulties. We start by asking, "What does it say?" and realize that to understand the passage fully, we need to consider the preceding verses. Peter is essentially pulling us into a huddle, reminding us of the living hope we have through Jesus Christ's resurrection and the inheritance that awaits us – imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. The joy mentioned is not dependent on external circumstances but is an internal energy that remains undisturbed by life's storms. It's accessible and available to us in Christ, though we may need to ask for it repeatedly. So, if you're seeking joy or it's been absent from your life, perhaps this is your word and your year to embrace it. Remember, joy is always within reach, and it's our inheritance as believers in Christ. Jesus Brings Inexpressible Joy, 1 Peter 1:6-9
Sunday AM Worship - 11/5/2023
As we near the end of our week on joy, today we look at another aspect of the joy available to us in God, specifically how our joy could be so great that the Bible would call it inexpressible. May our hearts be opened to a greater measure of joy than we've yet experienced, and the wisdom and faith to hold on to that joy as our portion in God. Our Scripture for today comes from 1 Peter 1:8-9, and today's worship is You Are My Joy by United Pursuit feat Will Reagan. -- Jesus' invitation in Matthew 11 to find real rest is for YOU. First15's brand-new devotional book called Rhythms was written with you in mind. Each day of this 28-day devotional invites you to break away from your normal rhythm of waking, eating, working, and sleeping to discover a spiritual rhythm that, when practiced, will lead you into a more vibrant, abundant life in every way that matters. What makes the Christian's joy in Christ inexpressible? And how do we foster that joy? These are the questions that John Piper answers from 1 Peter 1:8–9 in this episode of Light + Truth.

A Light Unto My Path will answer these 7 critical questions: Why do we read the Bible? How was the Bible created? Why do we need to interpret the Bible? What is the Bible about? What are the best tools for studying the Bible? What can I learn from others? How can I learn for myself? I love that the goal of this book is not to learn more about the Bible (even though you will), but to better understand the Bible as one of the primary ways God seeks to have a relationship with us today.
