What happens when following Jesus doesn't look like what you signed up for? In this message, guest speaker Jeff Stemple picks up where last week's sermon left off — right at the moment in Matthew 16 where Jesus begins speaking plainly about suffering, rejection, and death, leaving his disciples confused, disappointed, and wrestling with their faith. From there, Jeff walks us into one of the most breathtaking moments in all of Scripture: the Transfiguration. In Matthew 17, just six days after that difficult conversation, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain — and what they witness there is God's direct answer to their confusion and disillusionment. His face shining like the sun, Moses and Elijah present, and a voice from heaven declaring the same words spoken at Jesus' baptism — with one powerful addition: Listen to him. That command is the heartbeat of this message. When the disciples were struggling most, God didn't offer an explanation. He gave a command. And that command still stands for us today.Jeff unpacks three ways we can get to a place of genuine, obedient listening: seeing Jesus for who he truly is (not merely who we want him to be), resisting our desire to control and manage our circumstances, and following Jesus back down the mountain into the ordinary obedience of everyday life.If you've ever felt disillusioned in your faith — like the experience isn't matching the advertisement — this message is for you.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2026 45:06

In this message from Matthew 16, Pastor Karl unpacks what it truly means to be a disciple of Jesus. This chapter marks a turning point in the Gospel of Matthew — Jesus shifts from miracles and crowds to confession and the cross, pressing his followers on three essential questions: What are you allowing to corrupt your faith? Who do you say Jesus is? And are you willing to pay the real cost of following him?Using the image of leaven, Pastor Karl warns against the subtle doctrines that quietly push Jesus off center — the Pharisees' tendency to add to God's Word and the Sadducees' tendency to subtract from it. Both lead to the same result: a faith that looks like Christianity but has lost its core. He then turns to Peter's confession at Caesarea Philippi — "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" — and challenges us to ask whether the full scope of our lives actually agrees with what we claim to believe about Jesus. Finally, he confronts the cost of true discipleship head-on: a crossless Christianity isn't a safer version of the faith — it's a distortion of it. Following Jesus in principle but not in practice isn't discipleship; it's branding.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this message from Matthew 15:29–16:4, Pastor Karl examines two very different groups of people who come to Jesus — and what their approach reveals about how we receive grace. The first group comes from the Decapolis, a Gentile region with no religious standing or covenant claim. They bring broken bodies, unspoken needs, and nothing to offer — and Jesus meets them with compassion, healing, and even provision they didn't know to ask for. The second group, the Pharisees and Sadducees, arrives with suspicion and a demand for proof — and Jesus refuses to perform for them. The contrast surfaces a powerful truth: Jesus has endless compassion for those who come to him needy, but no obligation to satisfy those who come feeling entitled. Unworthiness isn't a disqualification for grace — it's the prerequisite for it.Pastor Karl unpacks why the disciples hesitated to feed the 4,000 (it wasn't that they forgot what Jesus could do — it was that they questioned who he'd do it for), what it really means to "fall from grace," and why the cross is the only reliable lens through which to interpret God's love. When we bring our "not enough" to Jesus, we find that inadequacy is exactly the raw material he's looking for.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In Matthew 15, Pastor Karl walks through two encounters that reveal how Jesus responds to very different kinds of people. The first is a confrontation with the Pharisees — religious leaders who had mastered looking clean on the outside while leaving their hearts completely untouched. Jesus exposes their hypocrisy and makes clear that the real issue is never what comes in from the outside, but what flows out from within. The second is a striking contrast: a Canaanite woman from Tyre and Sidon who comes to Jesus with nothing to offer — no credentials, no leverage, no religious standing. She simply cries out for mercy. When Jesus seems silent and even dismissive, she doesn't leave offended. She presses in, clings to grace, and receives what the Pharisees never could: a direct word of commendation from Jesus himself — "Great is your faith."God honors a transformed heart and exposes religious hypocrisy. And he blesses according to his grace — not our worthiness. This message is an invitation to stop trying to leverage God and start crying out for his mercy.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

What do you do when the storms of life hit? Our instinct is to hunker down, strain at the oars, and just try to survive. But what if the storm isn't just an obstacle — what if it's an invitation?Guest speaker Jeff Stemple walks us through one of the most familiar stories in Scripture: Jesus walking on water. And while the story is familiar, the truth buried inside it is anything but comfortable. By looking at the accounts in Mark, John, and Matthew side by side, Jeff unpacks why Matthew is the only gospel writer who includes Peter's attempt to step out of the boat — and why that "screw up" might be the most encouraging part of the whole story. The storms of life are invitations to step out in faith.Fear says stay put. Faith says step out. And what Jesus says to Peter in the middle of that storm, he says to all of us — come. The very place we least want to go may be the exact place Jesus is already standing, waiting for us to trust him.Whether your storm started last week or last year, this episode is for you.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this message from Matthew 14, Pastor Karl explores two seemingly separate events — the beheading of John the Baptist and the feeding of the five thousand — and reveals how they are deeply connected as a portrait of two contrasting kingdoms.Drawing on the parallel between Herod's banquet and Jesus's meal in the wilderness, Pastor Karl shows what sets the kingdom of the world apart from the kingdom of God: one ends in death, self-service, and corruption; the other in life, compassion, and abundance. Through the stories of Elijah, Elisha, and Moses, he demonstrates that the disciples had all the history they needed to trust Jesus in the moment — and yet, like us, they forgot. At the heart of this teaching is a simple but powerful truth: you are insufficient, but you are not useless. The kingdom of God doesn't have a supply problem — it has a distribution problem. God has never asked how much you have. He only asks what you have — and what you place in his hands, he multiplies.Discipleship, Pastor Karl argues, always involves cost, courage, compassion, commands, and cooperation. The good news is that the Good Shepherd is more than sufficient for all his sheep.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this concluding message of Matthew 13, Pastor Karl unpacks the final three parables of Jesus — the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Net — and challenges the common interpretations most of us have grown up hearing.Rather than reading these parables through a modern American lens, Pastor Karl takes us back into a first-century Jewish mindset to uncover what Jesus was really communicating. The treasure hidden in the field isn't something we purchase with our devotion — it's a picture of Jesus himself, who in joy gave everything to redeem his chosen people. The pearl of great price wasn't a treasure to the Jews at all, which is exactly the point: Jesus was revealing the shocking mystery that Gentiles — the unclean, the outsiders — would be included in the kingdom of God. And the parable of the net reminds us that not all roads lead to heaven, and that a day of separation is coming.Pastor Karl also draws a striking connection to the book of Ruth, showing how Boaz purchasing the field to gain Ruth as his bride foreshadowed what Jesus would do for his people — buying the field to possess the treasure within it.The message closes with one of the hardest passages for any pastor to preach at his own church: Jesus returning to his hometown, only to be met with familiarity and low expectation. The takeaway is pointed — low expectation limits reception. The messenger can be overlooked, but the message cannot: God chose to treasure you, not because of anything you offered, but because of the price his Son was willing to pay.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this message, Pastor Karl digs into the third and fourth parables of Matthew 13 — the Mustard Seed and the Leaven — and recovers an interpretation that the earliest church held for the first three centuries: these are not simply triumphant stories of kingdom growth, but diagnostic warnings about corruption quietly taking root within it.Using the memorable image of an unnaturally oversized Chihuahua, Pastor Karl challenges the assumption that bigger always means better — in culture, in church, and in personal faith. Just because something grows doesn't mean it's healthy. God designs everything with a DNA, and when growth outpaces its intended nature, something has gone wrong. From the Mustard Seed, the lesson is clear: a church that softens or reshapes Scripture to fit cultural comfort is one where corruption has found a home. Health — not size — is the measure that matters. From the Leaven, the warning cuts even deeper: what is hidden eventually spreads, and what spreads eventually shapes. Compromise never announces itself. It blends in, seeps slowly, and before long, convictions weaken, hunger for God fades, and obedience stalls.Pastor Karl closes with a pointed and personal call: audit your inputs, don't outgrow your obedience, and do serious business with the leaven you've allowed to stay too long.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

What do you do when the world around you feels messy, broken, and out of control? In this week's message, guest speaker David White walks us through one of Jesus's most vivid parables — the Parable of the Weeds and the Wheat from Matthew 13 — and unpacks why the kingdom of heaven doesn't always look the way we expect it to.Drawing from Jesus's own explanation of the parable, David explores the tension between good and evil growing side by side in the world, and why God's patience in the face of that tension is not permission — it's mercy. Along the way, he challenges the very human impulse to fix everything around us, and redirects our attention to the one thing we actually can control: what's growing in us.From the surprising agricultural detail that made Jesus's parable land for his original audience, to what the workers in the story reveal about our deep need for control, David unpacks what it looks like to trust the Farmer when the field feels overwhelming. He closes with a practical challenge around three things we actually can control — who we follow, what we feed on, and what we focus on — and invites listeners to reorient toward the kingdom rather than the weeds.Big Idea: You can't always control what's growing around you, but you can control what's growing in you.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this episode, Pastor Karl opens Matthew 13 — a chapter packed with seven parables — by laying the groundwork for what parables are and why Jesus used them. A parable, he explains, is a real-life story "thrown beside" a hard truth to make it easier to understand. Jesus uses seven of them in this chapter to help us grasp the rule and reign of God, and what it looks like when the gospel takes root — or doesn't — in a human heart. The focus this week is the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1–23), and Pastor Karl walks through each of the four soils Jesus describes: the hardened path, the rocky ground, the thorny ground, and the good soil. Each one represents a real response to God's Word — and the challenge of the passage is to honestly ask which one represents your heart right now.Along the way, Pastor Karl introduces the concept of exegetical constancy — how symbols like seed, birds, and the field carry consistent meaning throughout Scripture — and unpacks why Jesus chose to teach in parables at all. His answer may surprise you: it was an act of mercy. This episode will give you the tools to assess your own heart, pray more specifically for those you love, and understand what's happening spiritually in response to Scripture — right now, in real time.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this message, Pastor Karl wraps up the church's three-week study of Matthew 12 — what he calls the hinge point of Jesus's ministry and of all human history. Drawing from verses 40 through 50, he unpacks three powerful moments that reveal the heart of what Jesus was communicating to a resistant generation.Pastor Karl begins with Jesus's references to Jonah and the Queen of Sheba, showing how Jesus used these figures to slam the door on the demand for endless proof. The issue, he argues, was never a lack of evidence — it was a lack of surrender. Unbelief isn't intellectual; it's volitional. From there, Pastor Karl digs into one of the most misunderstood passages in Matthew: the parable of the empty house. When an unclean spirit returns to find a swept but empty home, it brings seven more spirits worse than itself. Jesus's point is sobering — moral reform without spiritual transformation is a setup for collapse. Cleaning up your life in your own strength, without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, leaves you more vulnerable than before, not less. Finally, Pastor Karl addresses Jesus's surprising response to his own family, and what it reveals about who truly belongs to the family of God. It isn't inherited proximity or religious familiarity — it's submission and obedience to the Father. This episode is a challenge and an encouragement: stop trying to clean the house on your own. This Easter, Pastor Karl takes an unconventional approach — rather than turning to a traditional resurrection passage, he stays in the church's ongoing study of Matthew 12, the hinge point of Jesus's ministry and the moment that set the crucifixion in motion.Through Matthew 12, Pastor Karl unpacks what it truly means to reckon with who Jesus claimed to be. He explores the miracle of the possessed, blind, and mute man — and how the religious leaders' refusal to accept what they witnessed reveals the same pattern of avoidance that people default to today. Jesus's response cuts through every excuse: there is no neutral ground. You're either for him or against him.Pastor Karl also addresses one of Scripture's most misunderstood concepts — the unforgivable sin. He sets the record straight on what blasphemy against the Holy Spirit actually means, why it's less about God's refusal to forgive and more about humanity's refusal to repent, and how a hardened heart doesn't happen overnight. The sermon closes with the Sign of Jonah — Jesus's declaration that the resurrection would be the only sign his generation would receive. Pastor Karl's challenge to listeners is direct: you don't need more evidence. The resurrection isn't a suggestion or an invitation. It's a declaration. The question is simply what you'll do with what you already know.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this Palm Sunday message, Pastor Karl walks through Matthew 12 — not the triumphal entry itself, but the pivotal chapter that sets it all in motion. This is the first moment in Scripture where a plot to kill Jesus takes shape, and the first time Jesus begins pointing toward his own death and resurrection. It is, as Pastor Karl calls it, the hinge point of Jesus's entire ministry. At the heart of the chapter is a confrontation with the Pharisees over the Sabbath — a conflict that sounds minor on the surface but carries enormous weight. Through it, Jesus makes a series of audacious claims: that he is greater than King David, greater than the Temple, and Lord of the Sabbath itself. Each claim forces those listening to a decision — either Jesus is speaking blasphemy, or he is exactly who he says he is.Pastor Karl unpacks why these claims were so explosive in their original context, what the Temple and Sabbath meant to first-century Jewish life, and why Jesus's healings and challenges to religious authority weren't just acts of compassion — they were declarations of kingship. The message lands on a sobering note for Palm Sunday: the same crowd that would soon shout Hosanna would, five days later, shout Crucify him. And the reason, Pastor Karl argues, isn't hard to find — it's the same reason any of us would.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this message, Pastor Karl tackles one of the more challenging passages in Matthew's Gospel — a section most preachers skip, especially leading up to Easter. Working through Matthew 11:20–30, he confronts a subtle but serious spiritual danger: indifference toward Christ.Using Jesus's sharp words of judgment against Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum, Pastor Karl unpacks why indifference is not a neutral stance — it is quiet opposition. The cities Jesus condemns weren't filled with outright God-haters; they were filled with people who had witnessed his miraculous works firsthand and simply... didn't respond. Jesus declares their judgment will be worse than that of Tyre, Sidon, and even Sodom — cities synonymous with extreme wickedness — because with greater revelation comes greater responsibility.Pastor Karl also walks through what Scripture teaches about degrees of judgment, the nature of hell, and why the unforgivable sin is ultimately the rejection of a known gospel. He then turns to Jesus's tender invitation in verses 28–30 — the rest he offers to those crushed under the weight of self-imposed religion or man-made rules — and explains what it truly means to take on the easy yoke of Christ. The message closes with a powerful challenge: the goodness God has shown you is meant to lead you to repentance, not comfort.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this message, Pastor Karl opens a four-part Easter series through Matthew 11–12, describing these two chapters as the "hinge point" of Jesus's ministry — the moment when people moved from being amazed by Jesus to being required to make a decision about him. He frames the series around four responses to Christ: doubt, indifference, opposition, and ultimately, death and resurrection.Pastor Karl focuses on the figure of John the Baptist, who despite being called by God from the womb, boldly proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah, and living a life of radical faithfulness, now sits in a jail cell filled with doubt. Through John's story, Pastor Karl speaks directly to the "disappointed believer" — the person who has prayed, served, and sacrificed, only to find that what God has delivered looks different from what they had hoped for. Jesus's response to John is both a gentle rebuke and a profound reassurance: I am still the Messiah — but I will not always deliver what you desire. The central challenge of the message is the call to remain actively engaged in faith rather than drifting into passivity and disillusionment. Pastor Karl draws on Jesus's words — "blessed is the one who is not offended by me" — to invite listeners to release their expectations, trust God's timing, and renew their allegiance to Christ, especially as their community stands at a critical moment of growth and opportunity.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

He reminds us that following Jesus is costly, but that cost is worth embracing wholeheartedly.Michael walks through each theme with honesty and practical insight. He addresses how fear drives so many of our decisions and silences our faith, how we wrongly seek our sense of worth from performance, relationships, and achievement rather than from God, and how believers are called to a public, confessed, unapologetic faith — not a silent one. He also tackles the reality that living by a different standard than the world can create division, even within families, and encourages listeners to start by making their home a place where faith is modeled and prioritized. The message closes with a call to discipleship and faithfulness — the understanding that following Jesus means surrendering control daily and trusting that even small acts of obedience matter eternally. Michael reminds the congregation that salvation is free, but following Jesus costs everything, and yet nothing we lose is greater than what we gain. Jesus, he concludes, is worth public, costly, undivided allegiance.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In Matthew 10, Pastor Karl highlights a pivotal transition in Jesus' ministry, where the disciples move from merely observing and admiring Him to being sent out as active participants in His mission. Jesus calls the Twelve, empowers them with authority to heal, cast out demons, and proclaim the kingdom of heaven, and then commissions them to go first to the lost sheep of Israel. This chapter marks a hinge point in the Gospel: following Jesus is not just about learning His teachings or attending gatherings—it demands responsibility, urgency, and full participation in sharing the good news.Jesus is strikingly honest about the cost. He instructs the disciples to travel light, relying completely on God's provision rather than personal security or contingency plans, emphasizing that dependence on Him is central to discipleship. He warns of inevitable resistance: they will face opposition from culture, religious leaders, and even family members, as allegiance to Him can divide households and bring persecution. Yet, Jesus promises divine help—the Spirit will speak through them in moments of trial—and calls for wise, innocent endurance, urging believers to flee persecution when possible not for self-preservation, but to reach more people with the gospel.Ultimately, Pastor Karl challenges the church: a faith that costs nothing accomplishes nothing. The true disciple pledges exclusive allegiance to Jesus, accepting the responsibility to live as radical image-bearers of Christ in the world, no matter the personal price. This message confronts comfort-seeking Christianity and invites every listener to decide if Jesus is worth the cost of true following.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this episode of the podcast from the church, Pastor Karl concludes the study of Matthew chapter 9, highlighting Jesus' revelation of His power through a series of remarkable miracles. He explains Matthew's Jewish perspective, portraying Jesus as the promised Messiah and Anointed One, contrasting this with other Gospel accounts. He recaps the structure of Matthew, noting how chapters 8–9 demonstrate Jesus' authority over disease, death, and demonic forces through ten miracles, while also showing the kinds of people who desperately approach Him.The core message centers on true faith: it arises not merely from believing Jesus can help, but from admitting that nothing else can. Pastor Karl unpacks the encounters in Matthew 9:18–34—the synagogue ruler pleading for his deceased daughter, the woman with a 12-year hemorrhage who touches Jesus' garment in faith (possibly connecting to Malachi's prophecy of healing in His "wings" or "corners"), the two blind men calling Him "Son of David" and trusting in His mercy alone, and the deliverance of a mute, demon-possessed man whose condition defied traditional Jewish exorcism methods. Through these stories, he emphasizes that desperate faith, even if imperfect or "weak," directed toward the right Savior—Jesus—releases God's power. Faith often requires a public "touchpoint" of expression, removing unbelieving voices that sound logical but hinder God's work, and ultimately trusting in God's mercy rather than demanding specific outcomes.Pastor Karl closes by applying the passage to the church's present moment, noting the explosive community growth in their area—with thousands of new residents and students arriving soon—as evidence that "the fields are ripe for harvest." Jesus' compassion on the harassed and helpless crowds compels believers to pray for workers and step into the harvest themselves, making this not just a message about miracles but about the church's responsibility to reach those in need with the gospel of the kingdom.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Pastor Karl continues the "Kingdom Now" series in Matthew 9:1–17, showing that Jesus doesn't patch torn-up lives—He recreates them entirely, unleashing kingdom power to prove His authority and bring radical newness. He explores the healing of the paralytic, lowered through the roof by four faithful friends who stopped at nothing to bring him to Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus first forgives the man's sins—addressing his deepest eternal need—then commands him to rise and walk, proving His divine authority on earth to forgive sins. This highlights bold evangelism through inconvenience, carrying others to Christ even when faith falters, and Jesus speaking hope first while prioritizing spiritual healing over temporary physical relief.Next, Pastor Karl examines Jesus' call to Matthew (Levi), the despised tax collector who instantly leaves everything—paycheck, position, protection, identity, and any fallback—to follow with total, courageous allegiance. Comfortable faith falls short; true discipleship demands unconditional commitment to a new kingdom. At Matthew's house, Jesus reclines with tax collectors and sinners, scandalizing the Pharisees. He declares He came as a physician for the sick—not the self-righteous—calling for mercy over rigid religion. Through parables of new cloth on old garments and new wine in fresh wineskins, He teaches that His kingdom brings expanding Holy Spirit life that inflexible, stubborn hearts cannot contain.Core truth: Jesus came to recreate, not repair. The kingdom confronts our deepest needs, demands total surrender, and requires elastic, flexible hearts to receive the Spirit's fresh, transforming work—choosing new wineskins over rigid old ones.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Guest speaker David White continues the "Kingdom Now" series in Matthew 8, showing that wherever God's kingdom arrives, chaos is confronted—but comfort is challenged. He examines two powerful encounters: Jesus calming a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee, where panicked disciples question His care despite His presence, and Jesus casting demons from two violent men into a herd of pigs in Gentile territory. The restored men return to community, but the townspeople—upset by the economic loss—beg Jesus to leave, preferring familiar chaos to costly change.David stresses Jesus' absolute authority over external storms and internal oppression, yet following Him requires denying self and embracing discomfort rather than seeking ease. He contrasts “Couch Jesus” (comfort-focused) with “Coach Jesus” (growth-focused), urging the dangerous prayer: “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven”—inviting God to confront chaos in marriages, families, finances, and mental health, while trusting Him through the inevitable challenges.Core truth: The kingdom is now—actively confronting chaos and challenging comfort—because Jesus loves us too much to leave us unchanged.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this sobering conclusion to the "Kingdom Now" series on the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Karl closes Matthew 7:21–29 with Jesus' urgent call to authentic, obedient faith. He recaps the narrow gate—Jesus Himself as the exclusive way to the Father (John 10:9)—requiring self-denial and kingdom priority, a path few find because truth is non-negotiable. The terrifying warning follows: Not everyone who says "Lord, Lord" will enter the kingdom—only those who do the Father's will. Even miracle-workers may hear, "I never knew you; depart from me," underscoring that salvation demands an intimate, mutual relationship: truly knowing Jesus and being known by Him, not superficial confession or religious activity without heart surrender and obedience.Pastor Karl illustrates this with the parable of the wise and foolish builders: Everyone hears Jesus' words, but only doers build on the rock. Storms are certain—far beyond our strength—and they reveal the unseen foundation. Lives built on anything else crumble with great destruction. Hearing or studying the Word isn't enough; we must be doers (James 1:22) for transformed, fruitful lives. He shares the powerful story behind "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus," born from Nokseng's martyrdom in India, declaring unwavering commitment amid tragedy: "No turning back… though none go with me… the cross before me, the world behind me."The message ends with Jesus' astonishing authority as the Word incarnate and a solemn challenge: Will you follow—not with lip service, but with total devotion through the narrow gate? As the congregation is invited to stand and sing the hymn only if they can declare it personally, Pastor Karl urges genuine surrender, heart examination, and reaching out for prayer to confirm a true decision to follow Christ. A grace-filled, convicting call to move from profession to possession, building on the only foundation that endures the storm.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this challenging and convicting message from the "Kingdom Now" series on the Sermon on the Mount, Pastor Karl dives into Matthew 7:1-20, unpacking Jesus' teachings on judgment, discernment, prayer, and true discipleship.Pastor Karl begins by clarifying "Judge not, lest you be judged" — Jesus forbids condemning others, but calls for discernment and inspection of fruit. He uses the humorous image of the speck in your brother's eye versus the plank in your own, urging self-reflection first to avoid hypocrisy before helping others. He warns against casting pearls before swine or giving what is holy to dogs — don't waste the precious truths of God's kingdom on those who will only trample and reject them; be discerning and move on to receptive hearts.Jesus invites persistent, progressive prayer: Ask, seek, knock — ongoing commands with promises of receiving, finding, and entering God's presence. Pastor Karl emphasizes that continual prayer keeps us dependent on our good Father, who gives how much more generously than earthly parents, aligning our desires with His good will. The Golden Rule gets elevated: not just "don't do bad," but actively do to others what you want done to you — a revolutionary call to love.Jesus contrasts the narrow gate and road that leads to life (costly self-denial and obedience, yet light under His yoke) with the broad road of religious activity without heart change, which leads to destruction — few find the narrow way. Finally, beware false prophets disguised as sheep but inwardly wolves; recognize them (and ourselves) by their fruit. Good trees bear good fruit (love, joy, peace, etc.); bad trees produce bad — and a life of no fruit is equally revealing. Judge for identification, not condemnation.Pastor Karl closes with piercing questions: What sin do you quickly spot in others but slowly repent of yourself? What fruit would people taste from your life? He warns that self-deception is dangerous — the most perilous place is being close to Jesus without truly following Him.A grace-filled call to repentance, heart transformation, and walking the narrow road of fruitful, authentic discipleship.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Pastor Karl explains that worry is not a personality trait but a discipleship issue—a lack of trust that we are our own ultimate provider. He notes the physical and emotional toll of chronic anxiety, while research shows most worries never materialize and the rest prove less devastating than feared.Drawing from Jesus' illustrations of birds (who labor diligently yet trust God's care) and lilies (clothed more gloriously than Solomon), Pastor Karl clarifies: diligent work and planning are biblical, but anxiety over provision is not. Worry accomplishes nothing and robs us of life. The solution is radical: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Jesus calls disciples to dethrone worry by enthroning God's kingdom as the supreme priority—surpassing personal agendas, comfort, and even life itself. When the eternal kingdom becomes our greatest passion, God faithfully supplies what we truly need.Echoing Abraham's trust over Lot's worldly pursuit, Pastor Karl challenges listeners: Will we choose altars over assets, surrendering our plans to God's will? True freedom from worry comes not from trying harder to stop, but from wholehearted devotion to the King and His kingdom.A powerful, grace-filled invitation to examine our priorities, replace anxiety with kingdom passion, and live as trusting disciples who reflect their generous, faithful Father.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this challenging continuation of our series on the Gospel of Matthew, Pastor Karl unpacks Matthew 6, where Jesus lays out His expectations for true disciples in the Sermon on the Mount.Building on the heart-revealing demands of chapter 5, Jesus shifts the focus from mere external obedience to the hidden motives behind our spiritual lives. He addresses three key disciplines—giving, praying, and fasting—assuming His followers already practice them regularly, not for human applause but as genuine devotion to God.With piercing clarity, Jesus warns against hypocritical “performance” that craves the praise of people, declaring that such motives forfeit any reward from the Father. Instead, He calls disciples to secret, sincere acts of worship done unto God alone, promising that the Father who sees in secret will reward what is hidden from human eyes.Pastor Karl highlights the revolutionary big idea: Jesus calls us from performance in the presence of people to authentic presence with God. He then explores the Lord's model prayer as a pattern of adoration, submission, dependence, confession, and protection—emphasizing especially the vital link between receiving God's forgiveness and extending it to others. The message culminates in Jesus' stark command not to store up earthly treasures that moth, rust, and thieves destroy, but to invest generously in heavenly treasures that last forever. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also—revealing that generosity isn't primarily about raising money for God's kingdom, but about God raising children who trust and resemble their generous Father.A convicting yet grace-filled call to examine our motives, reorder our loves, and realign our lives as authentic disciples of Jesus—moving from religious show to wholehearted devotion that finds its reward in God Himself.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Merry Christmas! In this heartfelt Christmas Eve service message, Pastor Karl explores the profound truth that Christmas is far more than a baby in a manger—it's the culmination of God's everlasting love story that began in the Garden of Eden.Drawing parallels between Eden and Bethlehem, Pastor Karl unpacks how God's love has always been revealed through three key ways: proximity (drawing near to walk with us), provision (supplying what we cannot provide for ourselves, including forgiveness and eternal life), and parameters (loving boundaries for our protection and flourishing).Yet humanity's response—from Adam and Eve to today—has often been to doubt God's goodness, reject His nearness, and step outside His guardrails. Even so, God's relentless love pursues us, covers our shame, and satisfies His justice through the promised Seed: Jesus Christ, whose virgin birth and sacrificial death crush the enemy's power.Pastor Karl challenges us: Many love the warm vibe of Christmas but avoid its weighty claims. True celebration means embracing God's love fully—belonging to His family, becoming like Christ, giving our lives in response, and going on mission to share His love. This message invites everyone to respond to God's pursuit, whether by placing faith in Jesus for the first time or recommitting to live in joyful obedience within His loving parameters.Join us as Pastor Karl and his son Caleb dive deeper into these truths in a special family message. Yet, from the beginning, humanity has often rejected this love, doubting God's goodness and choosing our own way.The heart of the gospel shines through as Pastor Karl reminds us that even in our rejection, God's love pursues and covers us—first promised in Genesis with the crushing of the serpent's head through the seed of the woman, and perfectly fulfilled in the incarnation of Jesus, Emmanuel, "God with us."This message challenges us: Will we embrace not just the warmth of Christmas, but the weighty claims of Christmas—God's call to love Him fully with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength through belonging to His family, becoming like Christ, giving generously, and going on mission?A stirring reminder that God's everlasting love didn't begin in Bethlehem—it was set in motion from the very beginning, for you and me.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this profound and hope-filled Advent message, Pastor Karl continues the Christmas series with an honest, Scripture-saturated exploration of the third great gift Jesus brings: joy. Turning to the familiar yet astonishing encounter in Luke 1:26–38, Pastor Karl places us in the world of a young, powerless Mary—living in obscurity, poverty, and spiritual dryness under Roman oppression—when an angel suddenly declares her “highly favored” and announces she will bear the Son of God as a virgin. With pastoral clarity and compassion, Pastor Karl redefines biblical joy not as a forced smile, fleeting happiness, or denial of pain, but as a deep, settled confidence and calm cheerfulness in God—even when circumstances feel devastating. Mary's potentially ruinous situation (public shame, rejection, and lifelong stigma) becomes the backdrop for a joy that is rooted not in perfect conditions but in surrender to a perfect Savior. Joy, he shows, is not situational; it flows from trusting God's greater reality, His unchanging character, and His presence when clarity is absent.Drawing from Mary's radical response—“Let it be to me according to your word”—Pastor Karl tenderly calls every listener to the same doorway of lasting joy: radical surrender. Whether facing disappointment, health struggles, dashed dreams, or seasons of grief, joy grows when we release control, timelines, and the need to understand, and instead say “Yes, Lord” to whatever He has spoken. This is essential listening for anyone longing to move beyond seasonal happiness into the quiet, resilient cheerfulness that only Christ, born in a manger and risen from an empty tomb, can give.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this stirring and deeply encouraging Advent message, Pastor Karl continues the series The King Has Come with a raw and life-giving exploration of the second great gift Jesus brings: peace.Turning to the familiar yet profound scene in Luke 2:8–20, Pastor Karl invites us into the midnight terror of ordinary shepherds—suddenly confronted by the blinding glory of God—and shows how the very first words from heaven that night were not “Merry Christmas,” but “Fear not.” That first Christmas did not begin with sentimental calm; it began with paralyzing, mega-fear. And right there, in the middle of stacked-on-stacked fear, the angel announced good news of great joy: a Savior has been born who is Christ the Lord, the Prince of Peace. With pastoral tenderness and unflinching honesty, Pastor Karl unmasks fear as the mortal enemy of peace—how it magnifies threats, shrinks our view of God, and paints our future in colors darker than God ever intended. Yet the gospel is stronger: peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of a Person. Peace is not something Jesus gives; peace is who Jesus is—and He gives Himself.Through the shepherds' journey from terror to testimony, we're given clear, scriptural paths out of fear and into the unshakable peace of Christ: speaking God's truth over fear's lies, refusing to agree with the spirit of fear, drawing near to Jesus through spiritual disciplines, and taking bold steps of obedience that move us against comfort and toward surrender. This is a word for everyone whose heart has been ruled by anxiety, worst-case scenarios, or the quiet fears that steal joy—especially in this season. A tender yet urgent call to stop trusting the unknown future to our own control and start trusting it to the known God who entered our fear as a baby in a manger.Because the King has come, fear does not get the final word. Peace does. And when the Prince of Peace takes over a life, what spills out is no longer fear—but praise, testimony, and unshakable confidence in the goodness of God.Essential listening for anyone who longs to trade fear for the peace that passes all understanding this Christmas.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Week 1 | The King Has Come: Hope

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2025 44:20

In this stirring and deeply encouraging Advent message, Pastor Karl launches the new series The King Has Come with a powerful exploration of the first great gift Jesus brings: hope.Turning to Luke 2 and the quiet, largely forgotten figures of Simeon and Anna, Pastor Karl paints a vivid picture of two elderly saints who spent decades waiting in faithful obscurity—praying unanswered prayers, worshiping through silence, and serving without recognition. Yet the moment a 40-day-old baby was carried into the temple, their Spirit-illuminated eyes saw what the crowds missed: the long-promised Messiah, the Consolation of Israel, the Redemption of Jerusalem.Through their story, Pastor Karl reveals that biblical hope is not wishful thinking; it is the confident, unshakable expectation of future good rooted in the unchanging character and faithfulness of God. Hope grows in the hidden soil of daily faithfulness, thrives when God chooses to work in silence, and celebrates the tiny seed because it already trusts the coming harvest. Simeon and Anna never saw Jesus preach, heal, or rise from the dead—yet they held the infant King and departed in peace, because they knew who He was long before they saw what He would do.A tender yet convicting word for everyone who has waited a long time and is still waiting, prayed a long time and is still praying, and hoped a long time and is still hoping. In a season that can feel rushed and noisy, this message calls us to slow down, stay faithful, and train our eyes to recognize the presence of the King—even when He shows up wrapped in the ordinary, the small, and the seemingly insignificant.Because the King has come, hope is not dead. It is alive, resilient, and bubbling up in every heart that keeps showing up and keeps looking for Jesus. In this sobering and soul-searching message, Pastor Karl dives deep into Matthew 5:17–48, where Jesus declares that He came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it—and then raises the bar of righteousness far beyond anything the scribes and Pharisees ever imagined.Through six piercing examples—anger that murders the heart, lust that commits adultery in the mind, casual divorce, manipulative oaths, retaliation, and hatred disguised as justice—Jesus exposes the truth we all try to avoid: outward obedience is never enough. God judges the heart. Every single one of us stands guilty before His perfect standard.Yet the bad news is meant to drive us to the best news. Pastor Karl powerfully unpacks how Jesus' command in verse 48—“You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect”—is not a cruel impossible demand, but the very reason the Son of God came. We cannot achieve the righteousness God requires, so God freely gives it to us through faith in Christ. Jesus took our unrighteousness and imputes His perfect righteousness to all who repent and trust Him.A hard-hitting, heart-exposing sermon that leaves no room for self-righteousness, but ends with the liberating joy of the gospel: guilty sinners can be clothed in the very righteousness of God and stand before Him as if we had never sinned. From spiritual poverty and mourning over sin to meekness, insatiable hunger for righteousness, mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, and even rejoicing in persecution, these aren't optional extras; they're the non-negotiable “be-attitudes” that must mark every citizen of God's kingdom. When these attitudes shape us, we naturally become the salt of the earth and the light of the world—distinct from culture, preserving what is decaying, and shining so brightly that others see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. In this compelling sermon, Pastor Karl concludes Matthew Chapter 4, tracing Jesus' move to Capernaum in Galilee of the Gentiles—fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy that light dawns in the region of the shadow of death—and the launch of His ministry with the urgent call: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” He unpacks John the Baptist's arrest and martyrdom as the forerunner who must decrease so Jesus can increase, then contrasts the radical response of the first disciples—Peter, Andrew, James, and John—who immediately abandon nets, boats, and family to follow Jesus and become fishers of men—with the great crowds drawn only by miracles to meet their needs. Pastor Karl challenges every listener: Are you part of the crowd seeking Jesus to fix your problems, or a true disciple whose primary identity has changed, leaving everything behind to seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness? He explains that biblical righteousness exceeds the Pharisees not in degree but in kind—imputed by faith in Christ, yet proven through a lifestyle of Scripture study, prayer, evangelism, tithing, and obedience.
