Justin Atkins joined the United States Marine Corps on September 11, 2001, after witnessing the terror attacks that took place that day. Justin's career in the Marine Corps would span 12 years and take him to four different continents. Justin received training as an Infantry Rifleman and as a Marine Security Guard after completing Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina.Justin was medically retired due to complications from his wounds received on his first deployment to Iraq. While on active duty, Justin completed his associate degree in general studies through the American Military University and was a highly decorated combat veteran.Justin completed his bachelor's degree in Kinesiological Science through the University of Nevada Las Vegas and served as a Senator, Senate President pro tempore, and Attorney General while part of the undergraduate student body. Justin helped expand access to mental health services at UNLV in response to the October 1 shootings and made several trips to Carson City to advocate for increased funding for UNLV.Justin completed a Master of Public Health degree from Baylor University and is now an MD candidate at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV. Justin is an accomplished researcher, a father of four, and a loving husband. He plans to complete a residency in Family Medicine here in Las Vegas and to continue serving the veteran community as a Primary Care Practitioner for the Veterans Administration.

This week's Urban Valor episode features Marine veteran, Spencer Zeisset, also known as Z. Z grew up in Bethalto, Illinois. As a kid, he and his friends would create fight games and engage in hand-to-hand combat. On one occasion, Z's eye was nearly injured by a sharpened spear during one of these games. He recounts the incident when he was sent flying through a van window as it rolled over and came to a stop on top of him.Z's inspiration to become a Marine was ignited by playing video games like Halo and Battlefield. Enlisting as an 0311 Infantry Rifleman, he became a part of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, Charlie Company. Alongside his military service, Z discovered his knack for designing military-themed art. Following his time in the Marine Corps, he established a company named “Phaseline” and elevated his artistry to new heights.

Nivardo conducted two combat deployments during his enlistment. During one of those deployments, he and his unit were met with intense combat after occupying a Taliban stronghold known as the “Green House.” Nivardo leaves us with how his experience in the military changed his life and what he's doing to keep a healthy mental state of mind.

Christian Bussler joined the Marine Corps Reserves right out of high school and was assigned to MP Co. "C" in Dayton, Ohio as an Infantry Rifleman, and was later crosstrained as a Graves Registration/Mortuary Affairs Marine. In 2003 his platoon of Mortuary Affairs specialists was activated to head to Kuwait, where he participated in the invasion of Iraq. In February of 2004, he volunteered to go back to Iraq and was assigned to Weapons Company 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, where he was wounded in combat operations while fighting against Al Qaeda terrorist insurgents. After Chris' surgeries, he volunteered once again to go back to Iraq in 2005, but this time as the Staff Noncommisioned Offier in charge of all Mortuary Affairs operations in and around Al Taqaddum and Ar Ramadi, Iraq. With Bussler's leadership, his team executed 4 search and recovery missions in active hostile territory and successfully recovered 13 service members and 1 civilian contractor originally classified as "missing in action." His team also successfully process and evacuated 150 service members back to the continental United States.  His book, "No Tougher Duty, No Greater Honor" details his experiences as a forward operating "body-bagger" in midst of combat.  Chris tells the side of war that no one ever speaks of, about a duty that few know exists.

He served 8 Years in the United States Marine Corps, including a tour in Afghanistan in 2008 for 8 months with 24th MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) BLT 1/6 (Battalion Landing Team - 1st Battalion 6th Marines). While overseas Stephen served as a Generator Operator attached to a Grunt unit. He was also an Electrician and went on a few patrols to help with the unit’s electrical gear. Can vets walk off the devastating impacts of PTSD? Do long-distance hiking, biking and river paddling journeys offer far better treatment for the emotional and psychological damage of war than pills or therapy offered by the VA? Sean Gobin is a United States Marine Corps veteran who served 12 years as an Infantry Rifleman and Armor Officer. He tells us his own personal story. After returning home from several deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Sean hiked the 2,181-mile Appalachian Trail. In 2013, he founded Warrior Expeditions and now serves as the Chief Executive Officer.Since 2013, Warrior Expeditions has provided veterans with everything they need to complete a three to six month-long outdoor expedition at no cost. Their journeys offer them the opportunity to decompress from military service and come to terms with wartime experiences.Participants have reported significant improvements in physical, mental, and social well-being during and after their journeys.Warrior Expeditions outfits veterans with some of the most highly rated equipment and clothing available from the outdoor retail industry. Eric Kazmierczak began his new mission as Director of Operations for the Resurrecting Lives Foundation in August 2014. Eric was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. In October of 1993 he joined the Marine Corps and started his career as an Infantry Rifleman with his first tour of duty at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  From this beginning he would progress through the Marine Corps ranks and retire as a Staff Sergeant (SSgt). During his time in the Marine Corps he held numerous leadership positions at all levels of command. During his Marine Corps career, Eric would participate in operations in;  Bosnia, Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, Riverine operations with UNITAS in South America.  Volunteer for Recruiting Duty in Cleveland Ohio, where he was meritoriously promoted to SSgt in 2001. In 2005 and 2006, Eric would complete two combat tours as an Infantry Platoon Sergeant to eastern Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Finally, he would serve as Staff Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge of the Command and Operation Center, Marine Pacific Command and Operations Chief for the 3rd Marine Regiment in Hawaii.  In 2009 he retired from active duty Marine Corps.  Eric’s personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. After being retired from the Marine Corps, Eric went to work as a local Warrior Care Coordinator assisting Veterans with TBI and PTSD.  He provided non-medical care to combat and non combatant wounded by assisting and facilitating their transition to civilian life. http://veteranpodcast.com/021
