[3:46] She is Tamieka Weeks and I am so thrilled to finally get her on RIMScast to talk about her career journey, her work at Southwire, and what it was like to lead the RIMS Atlanta Chapter. [3:59] We will also talk about how Tamieka helps drive a culture of safety at Southwire, in the spirit of National Electrical Safety Month, coming up in May. [4:08] Interview! Tamieka Weeks, welcome to RIMScast! [4:31] Tamieka Weeks started as a claims adjuster with a finance degree. Her career has been so different from many. Tamieka hopes all will take their journey for what it's worth and be proud of their accomplishments. [5:08] When someone approaches you with an opportunity, say Yes! Don't turn it down. You never know what doors may open. As a former claims adjuster, and now the Director of Global Risk Management and Insurance, she wants to have a relationship with the claims adjusters. [5:45] In a file review, Tamieka wants to know the why behind an insurance policy. She purchases a policy with the intent of protecting Southwire's assets. [6:29] Southwire is about an hour west of Atlanta, in Carrollton, Georgia. It is the leading manufacturer of wiring cable. Southwire will celebrate 75 years in March of 2030. Southwire is excited about where it is today and is looking forward to continuing to grow globally. [7:13] Tamieka knows to expect the unexpected and be able to pivot. She never knows what may come up in a day. She is open. She knows she is there to support the organization. [7:38] Tamieka is a trusted advisor and a subject matter expert within the organization. She prides herself on ensuring that everyone knows that she is here to support them. [7:54] Southwire has 9,000 employees. In November 2024, Southwire launched a risk management SharePoint site. It goes into risk management insurance definitions and surety bonds definitions. It's all about sharing the knowledge of the industry. [8:26] The SharePoint site also provides the claims reporting. Tamieka educates the employees on what to do when an incident occurs. The first thing is to report the claim to the TPA. If they have any questions, they can contact Tamieka. Tamieka is also responsible for surety bonds. [9:16] There is a checklist for property claims and those are reported to Tamieka. The instructions for what needs to happen on a property claim are on the SharePoint site. It's important to notify Tamieka so she can report the property claim. [9:32] It's all about everyone being aware of what needs to happen about an event. [9:41] Tamieka has been with Southwire for almost 12 years. She helped build the risk culture at Southwire. It's been a fun ride, for sure! [9:53] Tamieka partnered with several team members to develop the SharePoint site. It's been exciting for the organization. It was launched by the IT department and several others. Tamieka had spoken with risk professionals throughout the industry about what they were launching. [10:33] The beauty of the risk industry is that we don't have to reinvent the wheel. It's all about what we can do to enhance their organization through process improvement. [11:00] When Tamieka started with Southwire, she was busy administering certificates of insurance. The SharePoint site streamlines everything in a central location. People can see their insurance limits, request what they need, and submit information to their insurance brokers. [11:45] Tamieka's risk team of about 5 people reports to the General Counsel department. [12:27] Plug Time! RIMS Webinars! [14:18] When Tamieka joined risk management, she loved it instantly because it's continually evolving. The market and your company are evolving and you have to be able to embrace the change. There are always new risks and emerging risks. [14:43] Once, cyber risk was new. Now the new risk we're talking about is AI. Who knows what new risk we will be talking about in the next nine months to a year? To be in the risk management industry, you have to love it to wake up each day not knowing what to expect. [15:16] Tamiela says the meaningful relationships that we establish from day to day, month to month, and year to year are truly amazing. The industry is amazing, as well, from Atlanta to global. She is excited about RISKWORLD 2025 in Chicago. [15:43] RISKWORLD 2025 will be held from May 4th through May 7th, in Chicago, Illinois. [15:47] May is also National Electrical Safety Awareness Month in the U.S. Southwire is always focused on safety, with monthly training for team members. They focus on team members from entering the facilities to exiting the facilities. Safety is number one. [16:28] Southwire's Environmental Health and Safety Department strives for safety. Southwire recently completed Lockout/Tagout training, a safety procedure for properly shutting off equipment to ensure that no one is accidentally injured if machinery is being serviced. [17:01] Tamieka says labeling is placed on Southwire wires and cables to ensure the customers are aware of how to use the products. Customers can also download information on the safe use of Southwire products. This is part of Southwire's Environmental Health and Safety efforts. [17:43] RIMS Plug! [19:10] Tamieka describes practicing risk management in the greater Atlanta area. She says it's all about the people and the risk management community. Everybody just loves everybody! It's Southern hospitality. When she joined the Atlanta RIMS Chapter, it was very welcoming. [19:34] When Tamieka joined the board, the board members saw so much potential in her. They assured her she could do this. Tamieka says Atlanta is the land of opportunity. Tamieka joined the chapter in 2013. She became the first Black female President of the Atlanta Chapter. [20:38] Tamieka became Chapter President during COVID-19. Her thoughts were about what she could do to make the organization better and what she could do for succession planning. [20:59] Members were at home. Tamieka connected with the previous presidents and prior board members. No one was in person. Tamieka asked the previous officers for their notes. They were happy to talk and share ideas to make the chapter succeed. [22:02] That moment was more about the Chapter and less about Tamieka. Tamieka built committees and sent surveys. Tamieka wanted to hear what the members had to say. She gave the board and members a voice. It was a fun time, working to make the chapter better. [22:44] The feedback from past presidents was the foundation to win 2022 Chapter of the Year! Their ability and willingness to help Tamieka in her role made the RIMS Atlanta Chapter special. [23:33] The chapter had a virtual social hour with a mixologist. They had a virtual trivia game. They had a virtual mentor event. They raised money at a Virtual Aid Conference. They were creative in everything they did. They were able to connect with members in a challenging time. [24:20] The surveys were critical. They partnered with global RIMS to enhance their bylaws. The new bylaws permitted the board to meet virtually. They changed their chapter website. They made many improvements to the chapter's success. [24:58] In 2025, Tamieka received the Walter H. Buce Jr. Memorial Award which honors the insurance and risk management professional of the year in the RIMS Atlanta Chapter. Tamieka calls the award overwhelming. She is deeply honored. It means the world to her. [26:04] Tamieka's advice for young risk professionals: “Stay focused. When others see potential in you, listen to them. Don't shy away. Work hard. Set clear goals. Trust in yourself. Stay dedicated. Be persistent. Be intentional. Your path will eventually reveal itself. [29:29] “You're going to have people around you that are going to be your cheerleaders. Please find a mentor. They're going to support you along the way. In Atlanta, I would also say we have focused on bridging the gap of rising risk professionals and students entering the industry.” [27:08] “The RIMS Atlanta Chapter has embraced what we can do to help and support the young professionals who are focused on entering the industry soon. That's been a huge success for the RIMS Atlanta Chapter, as well.” [27:28] Tamieka Weeks, It's such a pleasure to see you again. I look forward to seeing you after this episode comes out, at RISKWORLD 2025 in Chicago. Tamieka is looking forward to seeing everyone, It's going to be a great RISKWORLD! Her goal is to empower those dealing with cancer to embrace their inner Warrior so that they can build a tribe, energize their voices, and expand their choices.Businesses that have employees on this journey often have many questions regarding how they can support the employee. In addition to Federal and State laws that apply, it's also important to have empathy in a difficult situation. It's also important to know how to deal with co-workers, clients, and business associates during this time. Deb works with businesses to help them navigate these challenges. As an unlikely cancer survivor, she experienced the disconnection and despair of a system where cancer is the star of the show while people with cancer are watching silently from the sidelines. Now, she is using her experience and expertise to kill cancer with honesty, communication, and collaboration. She advocates for everyone involved, from the cancer Warrior to their friends and families, and even the medical personnel who support them. The narrative for those dealing with cancer must change. These Warriors should never have to face their journey alone. It's time to build unwavering tribes rooted in selflessness and community support.Deb founded Wise Women Communications, LLC (WWC), an award-winning, full-service public relations and marketing firm. Register at RIMS.org/RISKWORLD. We want to see you there! [2:48] Jose Aponte is my guest. He is a vice president at Alliant and the president of the Atlanta Chapter of the Latin American Association of Insurance Agencies (LAAIA). Jose will be one of the featured speakers at the DEI Studio at RISKWORLD 2024. His session will be on Monday morning, May 6th at 10:00 a.m., following the opening keynote. [3:16] We wanted to hear his take on the state of DE&I today, how he and the LAAIA are upholding a legacy that began nearly 60 years ago, and the methods they are using to recruit and retain the next generation of risk talent. Jose Aponte, welcome to RIMScast! [3:53] Jose Aponte will be at RISKWORLD 2024 representing the Latin American Association of Insurance Agencies. Jose tells of his career path, working in sales, then in claims for direct carriers. He worked briefly for Wells Fargo, and then Marsh. With Marsh, Jose relocated to Atlanta, GA, where he was recruited by Alliant. [5:15] Jose works for Alliant as a Senior Account Executive Lead. He supports various producers. His role is market-facing and client-facing, which he enjoys. He manages a large book of business with large business and large middle-market accounts. [5:49] When Jose started at Marsh, he was asked to be part of Marsh's Hispanic Employee Resource Group called OLA. They have chapters throughout the country. It was a great experience for him. [6:08] They also wanted, as an ERG Group and with the Diversity Inclusion Division at Marsh, to see how they can expand further and support Latino Inclusion within the industry. Jose suggested they support the LAAIA and help them expand. George Woods connected Jose with Javier Naranjo, (now a past president of LAAIA) in 2015. [6:45] The intent was to support Latino engagement with the insurance industry and risk management. How could they help the LAAIA expand? The LAAIA was established in 1969. Jose helped, along with several other founding board members, to form the first LAAIA chapter outside of Florida, in Atlanta, with Marsh's support, right before COVID. [7:25] Other chapters have since expanded beyond Atlanta. Jose is the Atlanta Chapter President. There are chapters in Houston and Dallas Texas, and Denver, Colorado, and there are more to come. [8:02] The LAAIA was launched in 1969. At the time, Latino insurance agents weren't able to seek appointments or partnerships with carriers. The LAAIA was founded by Manual Arques with seven founding members of Cuban descent out of Southern Florida to help Hispanic Latino insurance agents receive carrier appointments. [9:00] There were carriers at the time that did not want to insure Latinos. That general inequity was the catalyst. Today two of the seven founding members are still alive. They are honored in Hispanic Heritage Month because of their vision and foresight in establishing the LAAIA. The LAAIA stands strong today. [10:00] Pastor De La Tejera and Andy Rodriguez, two of the founders and past presidents share an aura of wisdom and experience in meetings of past presidents. They are inspiring. Jose wants to be like them and inspire others as well. [10:32] In 2024, Jose would like to see more Latino leadership in the insurance industry. The talent pool of Latino speakers for panels is very limited. How do we fix that? We need to build the pipeline and attract more Latino talent into the industry. That is the main focus of LAAIA, to attract young Latinos to the insurance and risk management industry. [12:11] When he was a broker, Jose told people working for him that insurance was the industry where Warren Buffet had most of his assets. Why would you not want to be part of an industry with so much potential for wealth? To attract people you have to be a great storyteller and show people how the industry and all its verticals align with them. [12:57] The challenges are the lack of Latino leadership, how to build our pipeline for the up-and-coming talent, and for current talent, how to further expand and be in those management positions as well. [13:28] Jose helped found the Latinos at Alliant Employee Resource Group two years ago. He tells members that even though they don't have the title “leader,” they can be leaders in the sense of driving for change. Be disruptors in that regard. The LAAIA looks for scholarship funding, partnering with the Spencer Educational Foundation. [14:13] The LAAIA awarded two scholarships to risk management talent and they are determined to do more. The LAAIA just partnered with the University of Southern Florida and brought in various resources to provide $2,500 in scholarships to expand and market the industry. [14:48] The success of the LAAIA is measured by how much young talent they sponsor, and how many members are in the organization who receive mentorship on the benefits of being a member. The benchmark is the size of their book of business and how the LAAIA encourages them to expand through mentorship with expertise and knowledge. [15:30] The LAAIA looks at how is the member's success, looking forward. How is the members' knowledge being developed by the educational resources, training, and continuing education seminars? Jose notes that members are increasing, as well as the quality of membership and the expensing of it. [15:55] The IAAIA has a very committed legislative committee. It tracks legislative issues in Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Colorado and interacts with local legislators. Last month they had lunch with Georgia Insurance Commissioner John King, addressing issues that are going on affecting IAAIA members and insurance consumers. [16:48] RIMS plug time! There are RISKWORLD 2024 pre-conference workshops held on May 4th and 5th at the San Diego Convention Center. A link is in this episode's show notes. [18:40] Our friends at FERMA encourage you to participate in its inaugural International Risk Managers Survey, open through March 2024 to risk professionals from the U.S., Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. It is produced in partnership with PwC France. The results will be distributed in October 2024. A link is in this episode's show notes. [19:15] Justin recently had Megan Miller and Tandeka Nomvete of Spencer on RIMScast for Women's History Month. Tandeka is on the board of the Atlanta Chapter of the LAAIA. Megan said in the interview that she hopes one day to see a panel of only women talking about an issue not tied to the challenges of women in the profession. [20:01] Similarly, Jose would be pleased to see a panel of Hispanic and Latino industry experts talking about auto liability, for example, and not Hispanic and Latino issues. Jose would like to see how risk managers develop in their career track. The LAAIA has to reach out to find out who are those individuals and bring them to the panel. [21:21] Comparing the DE&I visions of LAAIA and RIMS, Jose believes they align very well. It's about bringing in future leaders within a culture of DE&I. The LAAIA has great partnerships with diverse allies. There is so much intersectionality in our industry; we have to think about how we can support each other. The LAAIA does that very well. [24:17] Jose will be at RISKWORLD 2024 in sunny San Diego. He will host a conversation at the DEI Studio in support of the evolution of the risk profession, Latinos and Latino women in the industry, and equity, making sure things are more fair. Latinos represent a GDP of $3.2 trillion and it keeps climbing with a growing population. [25:14] The insurance industry is well aware of the impact of the Latino population. We need more Latino men and women in the industry to speak to them. This is a global trend. Your opportunities are greater when you know two languages and greater still if you know three. [26:38] Typhaine Beaupérin of FERMA was on RIMScast. She speaks at least five languages. It's a great life skill. Jose used two languages in his first job as a bilingual claims rep. [27:54] In his first job, Jose did not have a champion or mentor. When he started at Nationwide, he sought champions and support from leadership, and he found them. He mentors and volunteers now to help others avoid learning the hard way. We need individuals from RIMS who have experience to be mentors committed to advancement. [29:48] Jose will be in the DE&I Studio on Monday, May 6th, at 10 a.m. Pacific, following Peter Diamandis's opening keynote. Jose is excited to speak to colleagues from other boards and organizations such as NAAIA, Insure Equality, and APIW. It will be an amazing discussion at the DE&I Studio. Come by with your questions and solutions! [30:49] The details are on this episode's show notes. Justin looks forward to getting a selfie with Jose in May! There is a link to LAAIA and a link to Jose Aponte in this episode's show notes. Jose also invites listeners with questions to talk to him on LinkedIn. [31:29] Jose, thanks for joining us on RIMScast! [31:36] Special thanks again to Jose Aponte of the LAAIA for joining us here today on RIMScast. A link to the LAAIA.com site is in this episode's show notes. If you'll be attending RISKWORLD 2024, be sure to check out Jose's session at 10 a.m. Pacific, on Monday, May 6th, in the DE&I Studio. Hey everyone, welcome back to the layers of design podcast. I'm your host Ebehi. Thank you returning and new listeners for tuning in! I had hoped to release this episode back in August but life happened and I finally got around to editing a few weeks later than anticipated. As always, I am excited to share this episode with you all! My guest today is making waves in the profession and community as a whole… It is my pleasure to introduce you all to Desmond Johnson. He is a registered architect in Atlanta, currently working as Design Manager for Middle Street Partners, a southeast-based real estate development organization. Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, he is a 2013 alum of Florida A&M University, where he received his Bachelors of Science in Architectural Studies; and a 2015 alum of the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received his Master of Architecture degree. Professionally, he has a broad range of design and project management experience in both the public and private sectors. Desmond is an active member of the National Organization of Minority Architects, volunteers his time as an Architect Licensing Advisor for NCARB and has served on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Chapter of the American Institute of Architects since 2017 as both the Emerging Professionals Director and as Treasurer. He also formerly served as the planning co-chair for Atlanta's chapter of the Young Architects Forum. Desmond's commitment to community enrichment efforts, his passion to create change, and his passion for great design led to his appointment by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and the Atlanta City Council to the Atlanta Urban Design Commission in November 2018. A short one year later, he was elevated to Chair of the Commission, where he presides over all public meetings. During his tenure on the Commission so far, he has reviewed over 800 projects, ranging from single-family homes in historic districts to the city's largest planned recreational greenspace in history. His efforts within the architectural industry have led to his recognition by AIA Georgia as the recipient of the 2017 Emerging Professional of the Year Award, by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of the metropolitan's area “People on the Move,” and by AIA National as one of 20 awardees of the 2021 Young Architect Award. So dare I say, Desmond is a trail blazer and an inspiration to many. In this episode, we get to know a bit more about his journey within the industry as he shares - amongst others - his experience with licensure, the different skills he's learned along the way, and if you listen till the end, you'll find out his most impactful project.

He is a licensed REALTOR in Alabama, and co-host of Profitable Powerhouse Properties podcast. Jonathan is married to Katie and has 3 children ages 5 to 13. WHAT YOU WILL HEAR:[2:04] Their journey towards Real estate Industry[5:17] How AHI Properties started as a company[10:45] Their Focus on quality and being hands-on across the markets[14:00] Importance of having a larger operation with more systems in placed[15:58] Why it is a great time to be in Rental properties[17:57] Expanding their network to build relationships with Investors[20:07] Dynamics of Real estate perspective used[27:20] Adapting Technology in property management business[32:14] Diversified strategies offered to Investors[34:10] Educating their agents on how to properly deal with Investors[39:00] Transition model from Accidental Landlord to Intentional Investor [42:15] Why some Real estate professionals are not Investing[50:15] Difference of Reactive from Proactive manager[52:30] How to leverage other people's money[54:20] Importance of Cash Reserves [56:35] Advice to their-25-year-old self[59:00] First Entrepreneurial Endeavor[01:03] How Informal and Informal Training shaped their journey[01:05] Moby Dick or The Deal that Got away KEY QUOTES:[20:26] One of the key ingredients to our success is to bring opportunities for investors to have other investment options in multiple areas. To be that firm that brings them the opportunity to use their knowledge in multiple platforms and help them even if they're outside our marketplace.[22:20] To be successful in business, the two golden rules to follow is that you have to do what you say and tell them when you're gonna do what you say. [25:50 It's great to meet some investor personally and be able to sit with them but it's not exactly an effective business strategy. You're not displaying your expertise or knowledge in the market just by talking to them, but if you can show them on their own screen and show the data and explain details why it is important, then it's much better.[32:14] Combination of those strategies seem to work well and once they dive in to different layers of that and understand that we don't need to get stuck in one mole, we can do multiple things with this and not only create some instant cash flow but also longer-term stuff. [47:55] It takes someone that understands from a bigger picture and be educated on how it makes sense in real estate. You have all the tools and knowledge to make it the least risk possible, but there will always gonna be a risk. It's the lack of confidence and education that's why some people don't invest in real estate. Summary of Business:AHI Properties is one of Alabama's largest property management companies and currently manages over 1200 single family homes, condos and townhomes as well as some light commercial property and company assets spanning 6 states.
