You will never know who you will meet in this small world. The world looks so big, but this world is so small. I had a conversation with David Hollenbach, not knowing that I had seen and talked to him before. Once we spoke about where we saw and talked before, he signed his book personally and gave it to me, such an awesome person. On July 19, 2023, we had a great conversation about leadership. David Hollenbach is a veteran of the United States Navy with a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Barry University. A major focus of research for his capstone was how strong, positive leadership can influence the culture of a large organization. While studying at Barry University he published "The Firefighter's Creed" and “Women in the Fire Service: A Diverse Culture Leads to a Successful Culture,” an article highlighting the importance of gender diversity within the fire service in Fire Engineering Magazine. He has spent years as an instructor, coach, and mentor, helping others define and realize success. Although he no longer works as a servant to the community, his passion for service to others remains stronger than ever. During his 23-year career in the fire service, he served as a: • Firefighter • Apparatus Driver/Pump-Operator/Engineer • Company Officer/Lieutenant • Battalion Chief in Operations • Chief of Special Operations • Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) peer counselor • Public Safety Rescue Diver • Coordinator and developer of his department's first leadership development program Battalion Chief David Hollenbach (retired) is the author of “Fireproof: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future." He is a motivational speaker, coach, and mentor. He owns and operates David Hollenbach Consulting, LLC, and hosts the popular podcast “From Embers to Excellence." FIREPROOF: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future [Morgan James Publishing (October 11, 2022) ISBN: 1631958607 $8.49 on eBook and $17.95 Paperback] Mr. Hollenbach takes the idea behind Yale University's Grand Strategy Program designed for political leaders and heads of large corporations and applies those principles to the individual. His book answers the question: How can I create a grand strategy for my life? He then leads the reader through steps to develop their own unique grand strategy to create a life that helps others and leaves a stellar legacy. Personal development topics like self-leadership, self-awareness, communication, healthy relationships, and self-care run throughout FIREPROOF, as David R. Hollenbach, III emphasizes the importance of uncovering one's core values and finding one big WHY. Hollenbach provides an analysis tool for challenging situations to help the reader discern which parts they can control, what they can influence, and which things they can neither control nor influence. He has spent years as an instructor, coach and mentor helping others define and realize success. Q. What inspired you to write “Fireproof: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future?”A. The death of my brother inspired me to write the book. My leadership failures, both personal and professional, inspired me to finish it.Q. What do you hope is the biggest takeaway from the book?A. That an individual's core essence determines the kind of leader they will be. Once they discover the truth inside of themselves—flaws and all—readers can challenge their limitations and let go of self-defeating behaviors. Within FIREPROOF, the question, “How can I create a Grand Strategy for my life?” is answered and leads the reader to develop their own unique Grand Strategy, to create a life that helps others and leaves a stellar legacy. Personal development topics like self-leadership, self-awareness, communication, healthy relationships and self-care run throughout FIREPROOF, as I emphasize the importance of uncovering one's core values and finding their big WHY. I also provide tools for releasing stress and working through feelings of overwhelm, as well as outline critical daily habits and mindset matters that are essential for success.Q. What makes you an expert in this field/a unique voice to speak on this topic?A. I based the book on my personal experience and research. I spent 23 years in the fire service. I moved up through the ranks, retiring as a battalion chief responsible for 6 fire stations. I have effectively led people from all backgrounds in high stress environments. I developed a leadership training program for my fire department and taught leadership for 10 of the 23 years I served. I suffer from PTSD and as part of my healing process I research and study philosophy. In FIREPROOF: Your Grand Strategy for Transforming Failure into Fuel for Your Future, Mr. Hollenbach takes the idea behind Yale University's Grand Strategy Program designed for political leaders and heads of large corporations and applies those principles to the individual. His book answers the question: How can I create a Grand Strategy for my life? He then leads the reader through steps to develop their own unique Grand Strategy to create a stellar legacy. The chief operating officer of Britain's biggest budget airline has resigned just as the peak summer season gets under way.Peter Bellew apparently left easyJet on Friday 1 July “to pursue other business opportunities”. For a top operational executive to leave the airline just as the busiest months of the year are beginning shows the scale of the crisis at easyJet.Since international air travel restarted at scale in March this year, easyJet has struggled to operate the schedule it promised. The fire service continues to be plagued by occupational health risks that have been directly related to the rigors of firefighting. The author has written about and published on these extensively terming it the three-legged stool. The three legs of the stool are fire service cardiovascular deaths and disability, occupational cancer threats and behavioral health disorders including suicide. Sadly, all three of these occupational risks can be minimized but are often not through annual early detection exams. The notion of situational awareness is key to fire ground survival and that same concept of situational awareness of our health risk status is paramount to assuring survival. We know early detection is a key factor in better survival outcomes. Yet, many firefighters are still not receiving annual wellness exams or ones that are specific to the unique health risks they face as firefighters. ________ Chief LeDuc began his emergency medical services training in Lowell, MA. in 1986 and completed his paramedic training at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. In Episode 25, I finally sit down with the outgoing Operations Chief of III MEF Information Group, MGySgt Rich Deuto. As he heads back to familiar territory as the incoming Senior Enlisted Leader for Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion, we investigate his passion for history, the impact of growing up as a Marine brat, as well as the impact that has had on his won family as his son later joined the Marine Corps. His arrival on Okinawa two years ago was my opportunity to have a 2691 MGuns on island with me that I could engage with regularly for much the same kind of professional discussions you hear on this podcast. I held off as long as I could to record this episode because I wanted to have as much observation time before the interview. Personally, the interviews which focus on a guest with whom I have a strong personal relationship are the most intimate. I’m sure you’ll agree the exchange was value added to the show.
In Episode 21, I interview one of my closest friends in the Marine Corps, MGySgt Vince Quinteros. In the exchange, we cover a timespan from the beginning of our careers to his current billet as the Operations Chief of Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion. During our conversation, he highlights the complexity inherent to being a linguist in uniform and having to balance competing priorities. We discuss the aggressive posture he adopted to get on deployments that later became core experiences that molded his career. He reminds the audience to cherish every moment because our time in uniform is a fleeting experience. Master Guns encourages each of us to avoid a risk-averse posture, particularly when an opportunity is identified. In line with his pugilistic nature, he jabs back during the conversation about the fact that someone needs to interview me.
Someone is injured on set...what do you do? Ideally, a set medic will be there to jump in and take control of the situation, trained and ready for any variety of injury or illness. In this interview, Rose Donahue talks with Samuel Scheller and Orvis Slack the CEO and Operations Chief at Guardian Elite Medical Services about the role of an on-set medic. They cover the responsibilities of that position, how to get involved in the production and live-event industry, and what you can do to make productions safer.

A letter from Grey Gloaming, Exile of the Rapid Evening and Operations Chief of the Brink, delivered to Keen Forester Gloaming by secure courier. Dad, I don’t know if you remember this, but when I was just a little girl, just after you first took me Off Cycle, we got into a big fight about Crystal Palace. I didn’t understand how a thing like that could exist--it didn’t make sense to me--mostly because I still didn’t make sense to me, but I knew that I made sense to it. It knew what I would do, even if I didn’t know what I would do. And you worked for it. I yelled at you and I cried, and because you wanted to appease me you told me something very important much earlier than you wanted to: You told me that sometimes Crystal Palace gets things wrong. You said that its predictions were like an endless field of perfect poppies: From a distance, they were a billow of pure red in the breeze. Yet if you looked closely, you might find other colors too: the green of stems not yet ready to bud; the yellow and blue of wildflowers dropped by passing birds; the damaged burgandy of petals crumpled under an animal’s foot. The glinting copper and silver of a gardener’s tools. The field was the field, you said, a glide of sweet scarlet over hill and meadow. There would never be so many other colors as to change that. But they were there, too. I was there, too. This is me telling you that the Mirage is Me. The Mirage is the broken stem and the stomped flower and the foreign strain of blossoms. I am… we are the exception to the rule. So, I don’t care what string of words they found inside of Crystal Palace this time: the Twilight Mirage isn’t annihilation waiting to happen. This place has problems. Lots of them. But look around, dad. People are working to fix them every day. Every day, Ioota Pretense, the Qui Err Coalition, and her allies in Echo Reverie and Gig Kephart find new ways to bring people together, whether through stitches, broadcasts, or literally lifting a city and transporting across the mirage itself. Every day, the Waking Cadent, her Beloved Nights, and the excerpt Signet help people who want to leave this place, just like you want them to. Except they do it because they want to, not because you’re forcing them. Every day, the members of Seneschal’s Brace push back on the dominance of the Hegemony and the Free States. The Cadent. Declan’s Corrective. Even. Fourteen. Tenderness. They’re not perfect, but they aren’t Volition either. Every day Demani and I use our training to help people who pass through the Brink, and the many who can’t even afford to do that. And we aren’t alone, because every day, even under the nose of groups like Advent, regular people are finally trying to do more than save their own hides. And more and more, under the shadow of Volition and in the face of your ridiculous announcement, people are realizing that they need to work together. So, throw out whatever Crystal Palace told you because that fact changes everything. It might be the case that you don’t notice all the other colors in the field of red, but that’s only because they’re spread apart, one-in-a-thousand. Bring them all together though? Put the violet next to the white next to the green and yellow and orange? Then look close, dad, because the field disappears. Suddenly, just in that one little place, just right here in the mirage, what you'll see? It isn't a field at all. It's a Garden. Episode 11 of Top Game drops today with the highly anticipated MGySgt Sean Nakao, MARSOC veteran and current Operations Chief of America’s Radio Battalion. In our conversation we explore not only the importance of caring about the life we lead in uniform, but more specifically, how we can transfer that attitude to those around us. He also covers the significance of making career decision based on facts as opposed to emotion. More than just shop talk, the interview also geeks out on everything from Japanese Whisky to Pokemon Go, software defined radios, beam forming and mesh networks in the modern household. Key amongst the topics explored is the search for balance between Duty to family and Duty to the Corps. As Master Guns eloquently stated, “If it’s right for my family, then it’s right.”
