Little self-published booklets known as 'zines' have long been a staple of DIY and counter-culture movements. They have deep roots in underground music scenes like punk. Today, zines are having a renaissance, with more DIY-ers returning to the medium to spread information and stories - as well as to avoid increased censorship. The Common recently visited the Boston Public Library's Jamaica Plain branch to check out the BPL's zine collection with children's librarian and local punk drummer, Chris Strunk. When Tim Colegrove decided to open a computer repair store in 2021, it was partially because he was interested in entrepreneurship. He also really needed a place to keep the vintage computers and gear that were piling up in his home. So, The BYTE Shop was born: A computer repair shop AND museum to the modern home computer in Jamaica Plain. The Common visited Tim at The BYTE Shop to talk about the store's fully operational computer history exhibit (that is open for the public to come and try), as well as how community and sustainability play into its mission. White Supremacy and Racism in Progressive America: Race, Place, and Space (Policy Press, 2024) examines the connections between race, place, and space, and sheds light on how they contribute and maintain racial hierarchies. Dr. Miguel Montalva Barba focuses on the White residents of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, which, according to the Cooks Political Report Partisan Voting Index, is the most liberal district in the state and 15th in the United States of America. The book uses settler colonialism and critical race theory to explore how self-identified progressive White residents perceive their gentrifying neighborhood and how they make sense of their positionality. Using the extended case method, as well as in-depth interviews, participant observation, content analysis and visual/media analysis, the author reveals how systemic racialized inequality persists even in a politically progressive borough. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In this episode, The Gritty Nurses and Nurse Matthew discuss two juxtaposing cases: first of a nurse who uploaded a video showing her at a strip club before her shift and a horrifying case of a nurse who fell asleep in her car and then accidentally drove off the top floor of a parking garage. We discuss both cases, the circumstances around each, the "upload/pick me" culture and how common falling asleep while driving among shift workers are. Details of Case 2: "I was so exhausted..." A Boston nurse was injured after driving off the top floor of a parking garage. Authorities responded to the incident at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, according to a police report from the Boston Police Department. Responding officers found a “heavily damaged” 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee next to the garage, as well as a piece of railing that appeared to match the railing on the garage's roof. Boston fire officials reportedly informed police that a vehicle had plunged off the top of the parking garage, though it was unclear how. Municipal elections take place on November 7 in Boston, and our city council is on the ballot. For the rest of this week, The Common is checking in with the candidates in three city council races -- District 5, District 6 and District 3, where a change in leadership is guaranteed. Today, we head to District 6, where earlier this year incumbent City Councilor Kendra Lara was defeated in a preliminary election. It was one of two historic upsets (District 5 incumbent City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo was also defeated) in a city where incumbents often maintain power. Now, candidates Ben Weber and William King face off to represent District 6, which includes Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury and a small portion of Roslindale. We met the candidates at locations of their choosing and gave them six minutes to answer the same series of questions. The deadline to register to vote in the November 7 election is this Saturday, October 28 at 5:00 pm. You can check your voter registration status or register to vote through the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website: https://www.sec.state.ma.us/VoterRegistrationSearch/MyVoterRegStatus.aspx Greater Boston's daily podcast where news and culture meet.
Taking over the world with tiny trees...Tim Arsenault is the founder of Bonsai Bar, a pop-up bonsai workshop held a breweries. As a self identified, serial hobbyist, Tim says "I get really into all sorts of weird hobbies that I find fascinating. Just to name ones that start with “B”, I'm into Birding, Boardgames, Baking and Bonsai. My interest was first piqued by the bonsai collection at the Arnold Arboretum in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston where I used to go on picnics with my wife Annie. Later I stumbled upon the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society's annual member show at the Denver Botanical Gardens, and I bought a few trees from a vendor and got really hooked. Later, I took an intro to bonsai course with Hal Sasaki in Denver and heard about this bonsai artist, Ryan Neil, who does weekly webcasts on bonsai (Mirai Live) and I've been looking for a way to work in bonsai ever since."Connect with Bonsai Barbonsaibar.comLet's Connect:@HappenstanceThePodcast@CareerCoachCassieHappenstance the Playlist

Unlicensed, uninsured, unregistered. It was all perfectly okay when Boston City Councilor was commuting to and from City Hall for work. But then Kendra Lara crashed into a Jamaica Plain home, and her house of cards fell pretty quickly. Today Lara pled not guilty in court. Howie has a field day with that one!
The Boston City Council continues to be steeped in tension after incidents involving two councilors brought what Council President Ed Flynn described as "negative attention to the institution," in a recent release. Those incidents include Councilor Ricardo Arroyo admitting to an ethics violation after providing legal representation his brother, Felix Arroyo, in a sexual harassment case involving the city. The other incident includes Councilor Kendra Lara's recent involvement in a car crash in Jamaica Plain. Boston Globe City Hall Reporter Danny McDonald joins The Common with more.
