Vane and Jorge sit with the insightful Dr. Lynn Comella, Associate Professor, Gender and Sexuality Studies at University of Nevada-Las Vegas (how appropriate!), and author of "Vibrator Nation: How Feminist Sex-Toy Stores Changed the Business of Pleasure" to get real about porn. This episode came about after we read Dr. Comella's response to renowned anti-porn feminist, Dr. Gail Dines, and Vane expressed being a "porn skeptic" after seeing the current state of porn. Discussion includes: can porn be feminist? Is porn affecting and even hurting sexual interactions today, or is it an empowering form of media? We also talk about moving around the country as a family due to the nature of his profession. After that we talk about his coaching career and how he is prepping up for this year as part of the coaching staff for the Washington Commanders. In addition he talks about what inspired him to set up The Lynn Family Foundation. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five.  About Anthony Lynn Anthony served as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017-2021. He began his career as an undrafted rookie out of college and spent seven seasons in the NFL. When he was with the Denver Broncos, he won two, back-to-back Super Bowl championships. After his playing career ended in 2000, he immediately went into coaching. His career has included being the special teams assistant coach for the Denver Broncos, the running backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns. While he was with the New York Jets, he was assistant head coach. He started With the Buffalo Bills as the offensive coordinator before being promoted to interim head coach for the Buffalo Bills in 2015 and 2016. Despite a busy and successful career, Anthony was determined to finish his college degree after starting it 26 years prior. In 2018, he received his bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Nevada – Las Vegas. He debated not attending the graduation ceremony to walk on the stage and get his diploma, but decided to attend. Cian T. McMahon is an associate professor of history at University of Nevada-Las Vegas. His research focuses on the history and identity of the Irish Diaspora. In this interview, he discusses his new book The Coffin Ship: Life and Death at Sea during the Great Irish Famine (NYU Press, 2021), a social history of migration during the Great Irish Famine (1845-55). Drawing primarily on migrants' diaries and letters, The Coffin Ship reconstructs the experience of leaving Ireland by sea during the cataclysm of the Famine of the late 1840s and early 1850s, when approximately 2.2 million people left Ireland. With chapters examining “Preparation”, “Embarkation”, “Life”, “Death”, and “Arrival”, McMahon not only provides an intimate account of migrant experiences but also places this migration into its British imperial and Atlantic contexts, tracing maritime routes from Ireland to Liverpool and from there to Quebec, the United States and Australia. McMahon's book also investigates popular memories of the Famine, not least the assumption that the “coffin ships” that passed back and forth between Ireland and Eastern Canada were sites of mass death. The Coffin Ship is published by NYU Press as part of their new Glucksman Irish Diaspora Series. Steve was previously a Las Vegas City Council member and has been practicing law there for over 40 years.  He has served as the District Attorney since 2012. His office handles over 75,000 cases a year and has recently been in the media spotlight with high-profile cases such as the arrest of Duane "Keefe D" Davis in the Tupac Shakur murder, the UNLV shooting, and the death of teen Jonathan Lewis, whose murder was captured on video by a mob of high school students. In our professional lives, we often face critical situations that demand immediate responses, challenging our crisis management skills. This episode explores Steve's perspective and approach to crisis management.  We discuss how his prosecution and criminal defense law expertise enables a quick understanding and framing of complex issues when he is on the clock to provide a timely response to the community and media. Hello everyone. I hope you are doing well. We are on to the second episode of this fall season, this time with Noelle Garcia. Based in the Chicago area, Noelle is an artist and educator who focuses on themes of identity, family history, and recovered narratives in her work. She is an indigenous artist from the Klamath and Paiute tribes. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Noelle has earned awards and fellowships at various institutions such as the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, the Nevada Arts Council, the Illinois Arts Council, and the American Indian Graduate Center. I had a good time re-listening to our conversation as we discussed how motherhood informed Noelle's beadwork, the ownership of stories, and deciding who to sell one's trauma to. As usual, relax and I hope you enjoy this.Links Mentioned:Noelle's WebsiteNoelle's InstagramEdgar Heap of BirdsTrail of TearsMaternal Perspectives ExhibitionTending Tender ExhibitionCenter For Native Futures and Indigenous ResearchFollow Seeing Color:Seeing Color WebsiteSubscribe on Apple PodcastsFacebookTwitterInstagram

Shannon is joined by Marine veteran Paul McQuigg and his son, Sebastian McQuigg for a conversation about the importance of never giving up in the face of adversity. In 2006, Paul was critically wounded by a bomb blast that left him with intense injuries in his jaw and tongue. With help from Semper Fi & America's Fund, Paul received medical and financial support that allowed him to heal and raise his son. As a football player at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Sebastian discusses how his father's perseverance inspires him as he plays on the field. Later, Paul discusses how he sought positivity throughout his recovery, and how he hopes to encourage others in similar situations.
