Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A Mystery About High Dimensional Concept Encoding, published by Fabien Roger on November 3, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. Epistemic status: I ran some experiments with surprising results, and I don't have a clear intuition of what it means for the way concepts are encoded in model activations. Help is welcome! [EDIT] I made a mistake while analyzing the data, and it changes some of the early interpretations of the results. It doesn't change the fact that using a classifier is a poor way of finding the directions which matter most, but it lifts most of the mystery. The mystery If you want to find the “direction” corresponding to a concept in a Large Language Model, “natural” methods fail to find a crucial direction: you need to remove >5 dimensions for the model's ability to use the concept to be affected. This seems to show that the concept is encoded in “a large number of dimensions”. But adversarial methods are able to find one direction which is quite significant (large effect when “removed”). How is that? What does that mean about how information is encoded by LLM? More details Let's say you want to remove the concept of gender from a GPT-2's activations between layers 23 and 24 (out of 48). (Both are >100 dimensional vectors). A natural thing to do is to have a bunch of sentences about guys and girls, train a linear classifier to predict if the sentence is about guys or girls, and use the direction the linear classifier gives you as the “direction corresponding to the concept of gender”. Then, you can project GPT-2's activation (at inference time) on the plane orthogonal to the direction to have the model not take gender into account anymore. This naive attempt fails: you can train a classifier to classify sentences as “guy-sentence” or “girl-sentence” based on the projected activations, and it will get 90% accuracy (down from 95%), and if you project GPT-2's activation in the middle of the network, it will make only a tiny difference in the output of the network. This is a method called INLP (Ravfogel, 2020) (the original technique removes multiple directions to obtain a measurable effect). But if you jointly train the projection and the linear classifier in an adversarial setup, you will get very different results: accuracy drops to ~50%, and GPT-2's behavior changes much more, and sometimes outputs “she” when “he” is more appropriate. This is called RLACE (Ravfogel, 2022). Why is that? The best explanation I have found to explain this discrepancy is that INLP (= using a classifier) finds the direction with the largest difference a clear separation, and it has almost no impact on model behavior. While RLACE (= using an adversarialy trained classifier and projection) finds a different direction (cosine similarity of 0.6), a direction where there is a clear separation a large difference, and it has a much greater impact on model behavior. [Edit (original images were wrong: titles were swapped)] [Edit] Here is what it looks like in the plane defined by the directions found by INLP and RLACE: INLP finds a clear separation, and RLACE uses changes with large magnitude as well as very large features. Is this something special about the distribution of neural activations? No: if you use another “natural” distribution like GLOVE word encodings (which Ravfogel's papers study), you will find that INLP fails to remove linearly available information, while RLACE is much better at it. However, that's not that surprising given the explanation above: the directions where there is a crisp distinction between two opposite concepts are not the one along which the magnitude of the changes is larger. But just because information is linearly available doesn't mean the network will be able to use it, especially if the direction you remove is one where the magnitude of the activati...

It hasn't banished them, it's just made them workable. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is part of my mindfulness meditation in the beginning. I don't have a breathing mindfulness practice. I just make sure I take a few deep breaths in the very beginning of my meditation and really focus on the tension that full lungs create, the muscle tension. When I let it out and relax, I just notice the tension release and my chest fall. Two or three rounds of that and then I don't really return to the breathing. It is an area that I've been interested in learning more about. Suggested Resources Book: The Phantom of the Psyche: Freeing Ourself From Inner Passivity by Peter Michaelson App: Good Habits (It's not a mindfulness app, its a habits app - it increases mindfulness because it increases awareness. Bullying Story This reminds me of self-bullying, when we bully ourselves. Mindfulness can be so helpful if we're bullying ourselves because usually if I hear an inner voice, I'm not even aware that this is an inner voice I'm responding to as if it were real. These inner voices use the word, 'you'. You're going to fail, you're no good. It’s talking to you as if you’re someone else. We respond to them as if someone else were saying this to us, and we believe it. And so, mindfulness can help this in so many ways. First becoming aware. You have to stop resisting these voices. This is happening and mindfulness is not just about the positive. Negative things are so much better if they’re experienced mindfully. When my inner voice says, people are not going to like you, I say (and I hope listeners are going to do this). This is the story so many people I’ve worked with have told me. You hear the voice, you listen to it and then you repeat it, but you change the you to an I. Ok, you are going to fail, the voice in my head just said that to me. And I say, Ok, I am going to fail. And then you tag on the word and. It’s sort of like saying, ‘tell me more’. So, I am going to fail … because I am no good. And tell me more … I’m not going to fight you. I’m just going to acknowledge that you said this to me. This inner voice said this, I’m going to own it. After a few rounds of doing this, a couple of things happen. First, it goes quiet. People say to me, I’m not hearing this voice anymore. They say, what does that mean. And I say, just enjoy the quiet. A lot of us are not used to a quiet mind. And sometimes that voice, after being heard says … oh, it might not be so bad. That’s how mindfulness can make a huge difference to how we bully ourselves. Bullying is an inner game. Whether it involves someone else, or ourselves, it all starts on the inside. To me, bullies, people who bully others, they’re chasing their own helplessness and trying to empower themselves but it only leads to more helplessness. It’s an inner phenomenon. The bully is the last person in the world who is going to admit to their helplessness.

If you've been checking out the Riff's lately, you may have noticed that Mike Bondurant has been joining me a bunch of times. He is from the INLP center where I've decided to take a bunch of classes in neurolinguistics programming, which is a type of coaching psychology that's been around for quite a while. I think it's super cool, you could check it out, check out his school there. But one of the things that has come to my attention in doing this program is this really cool conversation that I think belongs right at the heart of my coaching, about authenticity and I just wanted to chat with you about that today. Many people who have come on the show, many people who have come talk to me about coaching have a very specific conversation and I've talked about it in terms of a nagging sensation. Something isn't right in their life. They don't know what it is, they can't put their finger on it. They know that they want something more but they don't know what that is. In the midst of taking this school, it came to my attention that there's a very simple way of talking about it and neurolinguistics programming does just that. In the development in our life there are six stages and in those six stages, we move through them one after the next. We of course, at the beginning are basically dealing with food and shelter and clothing, right? Making sure that we have the basic necessities of life.

I just find it practical and awesome and it's just endlessly effective. So Mike and I jumped on the mic, we went through a couple of different podcasts, he's come on twice as an interview. I really think you're going to like it but send me your comments and thoughts. As always, it's really appreciated and it really helps us think about the show. This week, I want to talk to you about a technique that I actually learned because I've been going through the school. I've gotten my certification on the practitioner level, I've been working on the master's program and I just think this is the coolest thing ever. I've been doing it with my clients and I wanted to share it with you. It's the easiest option to figuring out what is your criteria for satisfaction.

Most of us do not achieve all the things that we want to in life. We see this as a given, that’s life. But if we sit down and really analyze the things we fall short on, we might start to understand more about ourselves and what it is that is holding us back from what we want. How do we talk to ourselves about losing weight? How do we see ourselves when we have achieved the success we are going after? How do we feel when we think about our life being completely different than it is right now? Neuro-linguistic Programming is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy that aims to know these things. Unlike many forms of therapy, NLP doesn’t need to know WHY you have problems with your mother, NLP just wants to know HOW you think about your mother and will help you reshape that thought. For this reason it has made quite a splash in the personal development / self help scene. Today we speak with a true expert on the topic, founder of iNLP, Mike Bundrant.

Show Notes: SatoriPrime.com/21 If you wanna know what you’re committed to, look at your results. (click to tweet) Let’s tackle a big issue that anyone on the entrepreneurial journey has faced in one way, shape, or form. Self sabotage. Sometimes we are so caught up in our cycles or loops, we don’t even realize we are addicted to the familiarity of poor circumstances. We become addicted to the safety, even if it is no good for us. Why do we do this?  How do we break out of it? How do we start getting the results we really want? Mike Bundrant joins us today to discuss these loops we find ourselves in, and how we can begin to break free of them. Mike has been doing iNLP training since 1995. You can find more information on him in the shownotes below! When you learn how to be happy consistently, you learn to tolerate the happiness, and trust it. (click to tweet) The Cliff Notes: Self sabotage is avoidable, unnecessary, self inflicted failure. People tend to go into loops and patterns in their intimate relationship scenarios, where in the end it backfires on them. To the unconscious mind, there is one thing that’s more important than anything else: familiarity. What’s familiar to us, is what’s safe to us. We’re gonna prefer what’s familiar to us all the time. Even emotions that are frustrating, but familiar, we’re going to set ourselves up to re-experience those emotions. If you find yourself in a negative loop, ask yourself, “why do I tolerate this?” Merely being exposed to something can cause you to gravitate towards it, due to the bit of familiarity associated with it. If you set a goal, but there is a deeper attachment happening, the goal you set might be able to override the attachment. Setting goals can help us break free of negative commitments we have. When you stop working against yourself, you begin to gain traction. When happiness makes you anxious, it’s because you’re not used to being happy. You’ll always bump into negativity. It’s a part of life. Build up a tolerance to the negativity. We will choose a familiar misery over a foreign happiness.
