By the end of this episode, you'll understand why your blood sugar, liver detox processes, and gut health might be sabotaging your sleep in ways you never imagined. Plus, I'll share how one of my clients went from 13 years of sleep struggles to sleeping 7.5 hours straight - and how she got excited about bedtime again.This isn't about counting sheep or buying blackout curtains. This is about detective work - finding the real clues your body is giving you and solving the mystery of your 3AM wake-ups once and for all.
This week, we explore some key contributors to laminitis, other than grass, that every horse owner should be aware of.In the last episode, we discussed sugar-induced laminitis and why spring grass can be a big concern for many horse owners. However, sugar is not the only factor that can trigger laminitis, and owners need to understand the broader range of potential causes.A Whole-Body IssueLaminitis is inflammation of the lamina. It is often a reflection of systemic inflammation and not just a foot problem. Inflammation, especially when chronic, can damage tissues and affect many parts of the body before appearing in the hooves. Laminitis is often a symptom of deeper, unresolved health issues.Stress and Emotional TriggersStress is the primary cause of inflammation in horses. Emotional stress resulting from the loss of a pasture mate, a new environment, or changes in the herd can lead to laminitic episodes. Chronic stress raises cortisol, increases blood sugar, and suppresses the immune system, which is particularly dangerous for insulin-resistant horses. Supporting horses through emotional changes and acknowledging their grief is essential, as horses feel things deeply, and unaddressed stress can lead to significant health issues.The Role of Gut ToxicityGut health links closely to laminitis, especially in horses with insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome. A compromised gut, often caused by poor diet or chronic inflammation, can lead to a leaky gut, which allows toxins to enter the bloodstream, creating systemic inflammation. Removing inflammatory ingredients such as processed feeds, preservatives, and vegetable oils from the diet can significantly improve hoof health. Owners should look for food sensitivities, even to common ingredients like flax, and consider rotating feeds and supplements to reduce the risk of intolerance.Hidden Causes in the Diet Some horses are more sensitive to ingredients than others. So, an ingredient that is safe for most horses might be causing your horse inflammation. If your horse is not improving despite a low-sugar diet, look at everything it eats. Supplements cannot offset food intolerances. So, if your horse is reacting to something in its diet, the only solution is to remove that item.Medication, Liver Load, and ToxicityLong-term use of medications, exposure to chemicals, commercial feeds, and over-vaccination can compromise liver function. When the liver becomes overwhelmed, toxins tend to build up, and the immune system responds with inflammation. To reduce the inflammation, focus on supporting detoxification and reducing the overall toxic load. Chronic inflammation can lead to further issues like Cushing's disease if not addressed early.Vaccination ConsiderationsVaccines can trigger inflammatory responses, especially in horses already dealing with laminitis or metabolic challenges. Inflammation from vaccines may not appear immediately, but it can cause issues in the weeks that follow. For sensitive horses, particularly those with compromised immune systems or high toxicity levels, vaccinations should be approached with care. Work with your vet to determine what is necessary, how to support your horse through the process, and when it might be best to delay or avoid certain vaccines.Final ThoughtIf your horse is struggling with chronic laminitis and nothing seems to help, it may be time to look beyond sugar and hoof care. In this vital and technically complex presentation, Dr Scott Antoine explains why PANS (Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptoccocal Infection) are common and overlooked root cause of psychiatric symptoms in children (such as OCD, restrictive eating, anxiety, emotional distress, depression, dramatic mood swings, psychosis and suicidal ideation). In doing so, he encourages physicians to explore mental health in an entirely new way, especially in the treatment of children. Dr Scott Antoine completed his undergraduate training at the University of Scranton, after which he completed his doctorate at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He later served in active duty with the United States Army as an Emergency Physician and worked as an Emergency Physician at St. Francis Hospital until 2019. In addition to his board certification in Emergency Medicine, he achieved board certification in Integrative Medicine and holds certifications in Functional Medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) and A4M. His book The Comprehensive Physicians Guide to the Management of PANS and PANDAS was released in February 2024 to excellent reviews. He discovered his calling when he and his wife Ellen, also a Functional and Integrative Medicine physician, battled to correctly diagnose the root-cause of their 12 year old daughter's sudden-onset OCD, insomnia, rage, as PANS. Since then, he has helped hundreds of children recover from PANS and PANDAS, and in 2019 helped to pass a law which prohibits insurance companies in Indiana from denying coverage for medical care (including IVIG) for children with PANS and PANDAS. In this richly informative personable interview, he presents an evidence-based outline of the successful ways to both diagnose and treat PANS and PANDAS, and stresses that they are not nearly as rare as mainstream medicine seems to believe. He decodes complex medical expertise, referencing over 300 clinical studies and peer-reviewed medical literature, that identify biological mechanisms and the root causes that underlie PANS and PANDAS. In this episode, Dr Antoine unravels why PANS/PANDAS can have such a profound, often sudden impact on Children's psychiatric health, and demands that PANS and PANDAS be considered more broadly in psychiatric diagnoses. Other causes of autoimmunity, including genetics, intestinal permeability, infection/T-cell activation and molecular mimicry (the mechanism by which microbes can induce autoimmunity). How to treat infections using prolonged use of antibiotics, and which antibiotics to choose. This month, we're celebrating our second anniversary with the Playing In The Sandbox podcast. Since the podcast has been running for a while, I plan to make some changes. Be on the lookout for this! This is causing a bit of interruption for me and my team. Due to this disruption, I'm sharing advice on this common workplace challenge. Grab your pen and paper, and learn how to handle an uncooperative employee. 1. You have a hard worker who gets everything done, but they always seem to be so angry. The way they talk to their coworkers and their constant frustration in customer interactions makes you look at them kind of differently. Often, these can be signs that they have trouble outside of work. The best way to handle this is to become an empathetic leader who takes the time to listen to their problems. Your employee may just need someone to care enough to hear what's going on in their life. 2. Speaking of a listening ear and feeling valued, another reason for disruption within the workplace is that the employee may feel as though the company doesn't care about them. Often, when workers feel that an organization isn't listening to their problems or concerns, it can make them feel unappreciated and cause them to care less about their work ethic. 3. Having unclear expectations and roles can create disruption within the workplace. When employees are unsure of what's expected from them, they may ask the wrong person, when it should come from you. This can cause them to become frustrated with their job role. Setting expectations and defining their roles helps prevent feelings of uncertainty and keeps employees engaged and productive. 4. When employees become disruptive, remember they're not doing it to cause problems or get under your skin. They are doing it because they are unsure of how to communicate the problem they're having within the organization. Hold twenty-minute meetings with your team and let them lead the conversation. This allows them to feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, feelings, and problems with you. 5. Why is recognition so important? When you show your employees that you're proud of their work, it creates a good feeling inside them. It's like, "Hey, my boss actually took the time to tell me they liked my work." It also lets them know they are fulfilling their duties within their job role. When leaders take the time to show their team members that they're appreciated for their efforts, it helps them stay motivated and engaged with their work.
