Qurratulain Hyder could weave a story in a manner that was quick in its pace and yet lingering in its mood. Her characters, often from urban backgrounds, live lives riddled with irony, while Qurratulain Hyder narrates their story with sardonic humour.One of the sharpest minds of her times, she spread her wings wide in the literary skies- she wrote for newspapers, short stories, memoirs and that magnificent historical novel, Aag Ka Dariya ( that she later translated into English herself as River of Fire)- a novel that encompasses the fates of four recurring characters over two and a half millennia. Let's listen today to a story that well illustrates her sparkling skills as a storyteller par excellence! -----About this channel: On this Youtube channel, you can listen to Hindi and Urdu Stories by famous writers of Hindi sahitya/ literature. You will find here stories from everyone from Premchand to Ismat Chughtai ; Suryabala to Mohan Rakesh, Kaleshwar and Mannu Bhandari.---There are certain tropes that one comes across in Hindi narratives, whether it be stories, TV series or films. One such is that of the mother suffering at the hands of her adult children. While one can argue that it is not far from reality, one has to admit that it is only in the hands of an accomplished writer that the nuances come through and words spoken by characters come alive, elevating the story above the mundane. Storyjam,podcast,Bhisham sahani,Bhisham Sahni,Hindi,kahani,kahaniyan,literature,Hindi literature,books,hindi books,hindi kahani,khoon ka rishta class 11,hindi audio story,urdu audio story,radio story,audible,progressive writers,bedtime stories,hindi mein kahani,saag meat,radio storytelling,chief ki dawat,chief ki dawat class 12,chief ki dawat kahani,chief ki dawat by bhisham sahni

The stories of losing home are the most profoundly disturbing. Yet these “stories” are the reality of millions of people across the world, everyday. Today there are over 117.3 million people who have been forcibly displaced from their homes. We forget and we repeat ad infinitum the same patterns of greed, revenge and loss. And yet, in the midst of this unspeakable sadness, there is a glimmer of hope- not offered by politicians, big institutions or organizations, but in the basic decency and humanity of a common man, who against all odds, decides to do what is right. ------------------------ Listen to Hindi kahaniyan and Urdu Kahaniyan by famous as well as lesser known writers. There are some relationships that have copious amounts written about them, and then there are a handful that we seldom read about. One such is that of a father-in-law and daughter-in-law. In India their conversations are seldom spoken about, often buried under the heavy burden of familial hierarchy. This story by Ajay Jugran offers a glimpse of tender affection and respect between a daughter-in-law and her father-in-law, in a story steeped in a bygone era in a misty small town. ----------------- Listen to Hindi kahaniyan and Urdu Kahaniyan by famous as well as lesser known writers. What would two great writers from history talk about if they were to meet? We may not find that out, but when one translates the works of the other, what is evident is a sense of common concern, a shared worldview and a hat tip to the greatness of the other. When Premchand translated works of Leo Tolstoy, he didn't just use his vast and rich vocabulary to retell the great Russian's work in Hindustani, he took the story and drew its essence in a way that the story became Indian. Incidentally, if you listen carefully you'll recognize another work or two that may have been inspired by the original. As the first study of its kind, Gender, Sexuality and Feminism in Pakistani Urdu Writing (Anthem, 2022) offers a new understanding of progressive women's poetry in Urdu and the legacy of postcolonial politics. It underlines Urdu's linguistic hybridities, the context of the zenana, reform, and rekhti to illustrate how the modernising impulse under colonial rule impacted women as subjects in textual form. It argues that canonical texts for sharif women from Mirat-ul Arus to Umrao Jan Ada need to be looked at alongside women's diaries and autobiographies so that we have an overall picture of gendered lives from imaginative fiction, memoirs and biographies. In the late nineteenth century, ideas of the cosmopolitan and local were in conversation with the secular and sacred across different Indian literatures. Emerging poets from the zenana can be traced back to Zahida Khatun Sherwania from Aligarh and Haya Lakhnavi from Lucknow who had very unique trajectories as sharif women. With the rise of anti-colonial nationalism, the Indian women's movement gathered force and those who had previously been confined to the private sphere took their place in public as speaking subjects. The influence of the Left, Marxist thought and resistance against colonial rule fired the Progressive Writers Movement in the 1930s. The pioneering writer and activist Rashid Jahan was at the helm of the movement mediating women's voices through a scientific and rational lens. She was succeeded by Ismat Chughtai, who like her contemporary Saadat Hasan Manto courted controversy by writing openly about sexualities and class. With the onset of partition, as the progressive writers were split across two nations, they carried with them the vision of a secular borderless world. In Pakistan, Urdu became an ideological ground for state formation, and Urdu writers came under state surveillance in the Cold War era. The study picks up the story of progressive women poets in Pakistan to try and understand their response to emerging dominant narratives of nation, community and gender. How did national politics and an ideological Islamisation that was at odds with a secular separation of church and state affect their writing? Despite the disintegration of the Progressive Writers Movement and the official closure of the Left in Pakistan, the author argues that an exceptional legacy can be found in the voices of distinctive women poets including Ada Jafri, Zehra Nigah, Sara Shagufta, Parvin Shakir, Fahmida Riaz and Kishwar Naheed. Their poems offer new metaphors and symbols borrowing from feminist thought and a hybrid Islamicate culture. Riaz and Naheed joined forces with the women's movement in Pakistan in the 1980s and caused some discomfort amongst Urdu literary circles with their writing. Celebrated across both sides of the border, their poetry and politics is less well known than the verse of the progressive poet par excellence Faiz Ahmed Faiz or the hard hitting lyrics of Habib Jalib. The book demonstrates how they manipulate and appropriate a national language as mother tongue speakers to enunciate a middle ground between the sacred and secular. In doing so they offer a new aesthetic that is inspired by activism and influenced by feminist philosophy. Iqra Shagufta Cheema is a writer, researcher, and chronic procrastinator. When they do write, they write in the areas of postmodernist postcolonial literatures, transnational feminisms, gender and sexuality studies, and film studies. Will all that pent up justified anger lead to a free-for-all, or will it go flat after a while, like soapsuds? --------------------------------- Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan, better known by his nom de plume Agyeya, held a prominent presence in the world of Hindi literature. It is widely believed that he brought experimentalism to Hindi poetry. Though long before he was known for his poetry, he had started writing short stories and novels. As a young man he contributed to a magazine edited by Munshi Premchand. In fact there is an interesting anecdote about his pen name, Agyeya. As a freedom fighter young Sachchidanand was imprisoned. While in jail he used to send his short stories to well known writer, Jainendra. Since his name could not be used, Jainendra passed on his articles to Munshi Premchand saying that the writer's name was ‘Agyeya' meaning unknowable. --------------------------------- On my channel you can listen to Hindi and Urdu Stories by famous writers of Hindi sahitya/ literature. Pankaj Mishra's Run and Hide tells a story of modern Indian times, as the hidden pasts of wealthy, Gatsby-style tech entrepreneurs must be reckoned with. And to help put this modern India in context, Dr Pragya Dhital will consider the resonances of the tumultuous period of "The Emergency", the response of the Indian government to a period of "internal disturbance" in the 1970s. She discusses the homemade or samizdat style leaflets which journalists like Ram Dutt Tripathi used to great effect. The cuisine of India is a national symbol around the world, but Dr Sharanya Murali explores how this most traditional artform, cookery, can become iconoclastic when utilised in performance art by the likes of Pushpamala N and Raj Goody. And Dr Vikram Visana will consider populism in India, telling us how differing parties are vying to answer questions of national identity which seem increasingly ill-suited to the challenges facing this modern democracy - and one of the key figures he discusses is KM Munshi. Asked for their key cultural figures of India the panel made some eclectic choices. Seek out the short stories of Ismat Chughtai who endured an obscenity trial for her works, and VS Naipaul was viewed as a great chronicler of a crisis in the Hindu struggle with the modern world. Bilkis Dadi was the most recognisable face of the Shaheen Bagh protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the music of Mehdi Hassan was remembered as a culturally unifying force between India and Pakistan. Thinking of Ismat Chughtai today as we come closer to her death Anniversary. Ismat boldly went where few women then or even now dare to go. She took on the world of men, including their writings, and turned it all on its head. She appropriated their language, their stereotypes, their prejudices and shaped bold narratives about women that unmasked the genteel society's hypocrisy and bigotry. ---------------------------------------- My podcast on other platforms: Spotifyopen.spotify.com/show/0rG7ez0Pku1MuWhfvo6Dtz Apple Podcastspodcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/storyjam-hindi-urdu-audio-stories/id1513845846 Gaana.comgaana.com/podcast/storyjam-hindi-urdu-audio-stories-season-1 RadioPublicradiopublic.com/storyjam-GmywpN Pocket Castspca.st/rwdymlsd Overcastovercast.fm/itu #Hindi #StoryJam #hindikavita #Urdupoetry #urdu #IsmatChughtai #Ismat #IsmatAapa #gangajamuni #lihaaf #lihaf #Manto #Feminism #indiafeminism --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/storyjam/message

Ismat Chughtai needs no introduction. A pillar of Urdu literature, she wrote fearlessly about oppressive gender roles and hypocrisy of the middle and upper-middle class. Her fearlessness got her into trouble often and her work was banned. But she didn't care. She wrote instinctively and with candour. That's the only way I know how to write, she would say. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/storyjam/message

A pioneer of modern urdu writing, Rashid Jahan appeared on the literary scene with a bang in 1932. She was one of four twenty year olds, (and the only girl among them) who brought out the urdu compilation- Angaarey. It was a collection of such sharp and incisive commentary about the upper class, especially the Muslim society of which they were a part, that there was an uproar. So much so that the British banned their book. Rashid was more than a writer, she was a true iconoclast. An activist deeply committed to the ideals of equality and justice. She was a doctor who dressed in her 'khaddar' sari and sleeveless blouse and short hair, walked the dusty paths of rural areas, seeking and treating patients. She was a feminist, before anyone in her world knew the meaning of the word. She was a literary flag bearer, someone who later Ismat Chughtai said she was indebted to for opening her eyes. While Rashid's writing on and about women is stellar, today I chose a story that places her in the wider landscape of social commentary. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/storyjam/message
