Malpractice insurance is something most PAs and other clinicians assume they understand... until something goes wrong. In this episode, Kat sits down with Christopher Cannell, DMSc, MPAS, MPLC, PA-C, DFAAPA, founder of The APC Consultant, for a clear, practical deep dive into malpractice insurance 101 and the medical-legal realities no one teaches us in PA school or on the job. We break down what malpractice insurance actually covers, the key differences between claims-made and occurrence policies, and why employer-provided coverage may not protect you in the way you think it does. Chris explains common assumptions clinicians make about liability insurance, tail coverage, and personal policies, and where those assumptions can quietly put your license, career, and finances at risk. We also go beyond the policy itself to talk about real-world risk management and walk through an anonymized case study that highlights how communication, documentation, and post-event decisions can dramatically affect outcomes. We explore how legal uncertainty contributes to burnout, defensive medicine, and chronic stress, and why legal literacy is an essential (but overlooked) form of clinician self-care. Whether you're early in your PA career or years into practice, this episode will help you feel more confident, informed, and proactive about protecting yourself in today's increasingly complex healthcare environment. Topics Covered: Malpractice insurance explained for PAs and other medical providers Claims-made vs. occurrence policies Tail coverage, nose coverage, and employer-provided malpractice insurance Common malpractice insurance myths and mistakes Risk management strategies that actually matter Medical-legal case studies and lessons learned How legal stress contributes to burnout Resources Mentioned: Check out The APC Consultant and join the waitlist for Chris's masterclass: theapcconsultant.com The Academy of Physician Associates in Legal Medicine (APALM): apalm.net AAPA's Risk Management CME Course: cme.aapa.org/local/catalog/view/product.php?productid=902 Connect with Chris: Email: chris@theapconsultant.com | info@theapcconsultant.com Website: theapcconsultant.com Phone: 339-933-1952 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/christophercannell https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-apc-consultant Instagram: @theapcconsultant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/p/The-APC-Consultant-61553148984788/ If this episode was helpful, subscribe to the PA the FI Way podcast or YouTube channel for more content to help you build financial independence and prevent burnout along the way. Marine cargo ports serve as the conduits connecting global and regional economies, and their ability to run efficiently can be felt near and far. In this Talking Transports podcast, American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) Vice President of Government Relations John Bressler, joins Lee Klaskow, Bloomberg Intelligence senior transportation and logistics analyst, to unpack the policies shaping US seaports and what his trade organization is doing to push for more federal infrastructure funding. Bressler also discusses rail consolidation, shipbuilding incentives, tariffs and automation, stressing balance between efficiency, labor and security. With ports investing in decarbonization, dredging and digitalization, he says smarter infrastructure and collaboration will keep America’s maritime network competitive and resilient.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send us a textPhysician Associate Christi Froiland spent a decade as an athletic trainer in the lower 48 before she went to PA school. She then returned to her hometown of Anchorage where she has practiced at both a dermatology clinic and an urgent care for over 18 years. She has also served for the last decade as the PA representative to the Alaska State Medical Association (ASMA). Outside of the legislature I, too, am a PA, and I know Christi through our professional organization the Alaska Academy of Physician Assistants. Our American professional organization (AAPA) has officially changed the name of our profession to Physician Associates. Alaska PAs have voted to officially change our name to physician associates as well, but the name change has not happened at the regulatory or statutory level yet. The PA profession in Alaska needs modernizing beyond a name change, and although we do not speak about it directly, we will reference Senate Bill 89 sponsored by Sen. Löki Tobin, which would modernize Alaska laws governing PAs.
Happy PA Week! Celebrate with AAPA President Todd Pickard as he shares how PAs make connections and relationships that drive forward access, quality, innovation, advocacy, and ultimately patient care. We will learn about our professions' advances over the past year and get a sneak peak at what's to come!

In February 2025, the AAPA published a press release entitled: 'AAPA Releases Survey Showing Physician Support for Removing Barriers to PA Practice.' According to AAPA President Jason Prevelige (DMSc, MBA, PA-C, DFAAPA), the survey proved that, “Physicians recognize the need for change. It's time to modernize these laws so healthcare teams can focus on what matters most, patient care.” But what did this survey REALLY show? Chandani Patel DeZure, MD, joins me to unpack the details.Links:https://www.aapa.org/news-central/2025/02/aapa-releases-survey-showing-physician-support-for-removing-barriers-to-pa-practice/https://www.aapa.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/AAPA_Morning-Consult-Survey.pdfJoin us! Recharting Your Life With Hope -Get Unstuck and Discover Direction, Purpose, and Joy for Your Life
Raquelle, "Rocky" Akavan did something amazing, but it probably didn't feel all that big at the time. She craved a group of fellow PA moms to talk to, so she created a small Facebook group for PA moms. Little did she know it would eventually grow to 19,000 members only 8 years later and become one of the largest special interest groups of AAPA (the national PA organization). The group is like a professional home filled with friends I talk to and share advice, as well as tips and tricks for surviving motherhood, marriage, and my career. It's become a way of empowering and advocating for our profession by a shared vision and a group of moms who can get $hit done! I wanted to highlight Rocky and let her tell her story of how it all started and what she went through along the way. As she says, it takes a village (and gives credit to her amazing team of PA Moms who work 24/7 to keep the group going). Take home points: If there's something lacking in your and it's not already available, take the brave step and create it! Spend time figuring out your core values, and reassess them periodically, then use them to make any decision. Set aside time with no phones or screens. Everything else can wait. Good leaders have to implement boundaries, which in turn, gives everyone on the team permission to set boundaries. Burnout is multifactorial, for some it's all about their work, but relationships and health also contribute. You are not alone. If you start feeling overwhelmed or burned out, use this as a sign to step back and reevaluate; ask yourself what needs to shift? You're never really stuck; even when it feels like it. There are so many more choices. Stay true to yourself by really spending time getting to know yourself and what's important to you. YOLO: You only live once so ask yourself what would create a life with no regrets and use that as your guide. On today's podcast, I have the honor of speaking with former president of AAPA and current CMO and VP of Clinical Affairs of AAPA, Jennifer Orozco. We discuss advocacy, making an impact, and how to get a seat at the table. Jenn stresses the importance of removing barriers to PA practice because healthcare can't afford to keep these barriers. PAs are experts in their fields and need to share their knowledge, experience and expertise with policy makers and those in leadership making decisions. Every PA has a powerful voice, and Jenn outlines ways in which we can start taking action today. We don't need to ask for permission to share our ideas or opinions. We need to think bigger than just our own clinic and our own hospital system. We need to be bold in sharing our expertise so that we can make positive changes in healthcare. Press play to hear inspiration and a call to action so that we can keep moving the PA profession and the American healthcare system forward in a positive direction.
