Khufiya, the new spy movie on Netflix, might just be one of the worst things that Vishal Bhardwaj has ever done. We discuss the film's tonal inconsistencies, incoherent plotting, odd performances, and most of all, that wild second-half. We also talk about the background score and how completely out of step with its story; the strange decision to include full musical interludes and introduce entire subplots that lead nowhere. We also delve into how secondary Tabu feels to the film, which replaces her character as the protagonist halfway through with Wamiqa Gabbi. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. BIO: Vishal Bhardwaj is a serial entrepreneur and founder of Predictions For Success, Engineer By Mistake, and Passionate Management Services.STORY: Vishal gained immediate success when he started his company and had about 100,000 followers. He thought this indicated that people loved what he was doing, so he decided to sell a corporate gift for Diwali 15 days before the festival. He didn't do any market research, so when he went to sell the product, no one would buy it as they had ordered their gifts months in advance.LEARNING: Do proper research before you jump into anything. Don't let emotions run your business for you. This immediate success motivated him to leverage everything, and he thought that whatever he touched would turn into gold because people loved what he was doing. Vishal and his team thought selling something would be a good idea.Diwali was just 15 days away, and Vishal suggested to his partner that they sell corporate gifts for the famous Indian festival. They started shopping for things even though they had no idea what the people would want. They thought having something in the range of $10 would be easy to crack. While at the market, Vishal suggested that rather than purchasing everything at a wholesale rate, they should buy something a little pricey but as a sample. So, if it didn't get sold, they would only have a little inventory sitting idle. His partner was against the suggestion. He thought they should buy cheap and in bulk. Vishal insisted that they forget about profits and try to learn something. They invested 100,000 rupees (about US$1,200) and purchased products in bulk. They did a professional photoshoot, and everything was exciting until it came time to sell the products. They talked to the companies to see if they were interested in purchasing the products, but the prices they quoted were less than even what the company had bought the products for. They couldn't sell even a single product and had to give them out as gifts to their customers for the next three years. What happens when you strip away all the elaborate set-ups and big cameras from a film? What happens when you restrict a filmmaker in his prime to an iPhone camera? Fursat is one such experiment where celebrated director Vishal Bharadwaj shot an entire short film on an IPhone 14 Pro. Starring Ishaan Khattar and Wamiqa Gabb, and cinematography by Swapnil Sonawane; the film gives a glimpse of restrictions can sometimes get the best out of a filmmaker. However, it's not all perfect. To find out, tune into my review!
Vishal Bhardwaj released a new film, a 30-minute short film titled Fursat. The film is a Bollywood-style musical celebrating the power of love and has scenes featuring the desert, the underwater, a train, and even a massive dance stage. The most fascinating thing about the film is that it was shot with an iPhone 14 Pro, and Actor Ishaan Khatter revealed it was a delightful experience to see the film's director Vishal Bhardwaj shoot the whole thing with an iPhone. Apple made a deal with Bhardwaj and roped him in to shoot the entire film on an iPhone 14 Pro.

The influence of William Shakespeare on cinema is well known & far reaching. Since the dawn of cinema The Bard's work has been adapted, or provided inspiration, in cinematic works from Griffith, Kurosawa, and Julie Taymor. The influence has also touched Indian filmmakers as well, providing rich, complex, and beautiful stories for filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Gulzar, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to explore themes, conventions, and emotions that run deep in Shakespeare's works. In this episode, hosts Ankur and Raeesa look into the history of Shakespeare in Indian cinema, and answer questions regarding the popularity of Shakespeare, and why Indian filmmakers keep reaching for the plays to tell very unique, idiosyncratic, and Indian stories.

Arriving three years after the brilliant horror-comedy Makdee, The Blue Umbrella (2015) was Vishal Bhardwaj's sophomore children movie offering. As far as tone is concerned, the two movies could not have been more different. While Makdee was eerily discomfiting, The Blue Umbrella pulsates with a throbbing heart. Based on Ruskin Bond's story of the same name, The Blue Umbrella is a children's film set in an appropriately candy-coloured cosmos. The vibrant and scenic Himachal Pradesh village Banikhet thus becomes the stage for the story to unfold. The film revolves around a nine-year-old Biniya, played by Shreya Sharma, who finds a blue Japanese umbrella and immediately becomes the apple of Banikhet's eye. Biniya has but one enemy, the old and cantankerous shopkeeper Khatr, played to absolute perfection by Pankaj Kapur. He tries bribing, threatening and scaring Biniya to acquire this umbrella. Biniya's sleuth-like quest for the umbrella after it suddenly goes missing one day makes the otherwise languorous narrative taut. Indeed, the pace of the film is indulgent. But once you submit to Vishal Bhardwaj's vision, it is difficult to tear away from the screen. Everything from the dreamy cinematography to the lilting soundscape works in tandem to make this film soar. The film also succeeds in not becoming a good versus bad morality tale, keeping the tone light and breezy. If you haven't been able to catch up with this flick, you can now do so streaming exclusively on Netflix. That's the OTTplay Lost and Found film The Blue Umbrella for today's podcast. Gulzar's poetically cinematic Ijaazat (1987) is perhaps Hindi cinema's most mature exploration of divorce and live-in relationships. It's also a film whose dialogue is almost as lyrical as its songs. Featuring a memorable feature-length waltz between two fine actors, Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah, and a terrific soundtrack by Pancham, Ijaazat is a film that truly showcases Gulzar's poetic sensibilities. A film worth celebrating, time and again. We are joined by Pavan Jha, a technology consultant, an avid film buff, archivist and film historian, as we celebrate this lovely film. He shared numerous interesting insights into the film, touching on the film's characters, songs, dialogue and legacy, adding great context along the way. Listen in! Przepraszam.
The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2021 is stirring up the film fraternity in India. Among other things, it seeks to empower the government to sidestep the Central Board of Film Certification and become a "super censor" that can re-examine film certifications if there are any complaints against them, even after they have already been passed by the CBFC. The government released the draft Bill on 18 June into the public domain with this new contentious provision, and a few other proposals on age reclassification for viewers and film piracy. The general public has been given two weeks' time till Friday, 2 July, to submit their comments. A group of people have already shot off a letter to the government saying that “the amendments giving powers to the central government to revoke a film certificate must be dropped". Celebrities like Kamal Hassan and Vishal Bhardwaj have also vocally criticised the move on social media platforms and urged people to raise their voices against it. But why does the government want to be the super censor? What is the intention behind this move? And what do people from the film industry have to say about it?Tune in! This week we talk about Haider, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, and Shraddha Kapoor. This film is an adaptation of the Shakespearean play Hamlet, set in the backdrop of the Kashmir Conflicts of 1995. We discuss the brilliant performances and direction. We particularly discuss how brilliantly they adapt the story to an Indian background, and discuss individual scenes that we thought were interesting ways of adapting the original story. As a music producer in his early career, Hitesh Sonik has been a large part of composer Vishal Bhardwaj's signature sound. But there is a lot more to this soft-spoken music producer/composer (songs and background scores), who has given us several chartbusters along with colleague Clinton Cerejo. Some of these hit songs are Beedi jalaile, Ranaji, Dhan te na, Darrrling, etc. Hitesh shares with us his journey (this was in Dec 2012) into music from his college days in this part of the converSAtion. We are glad to get this shy and brilliant musician, to open up in this interview. Its something everyone would cherish. Enjoy. Now on his own, he recently scored the background music for films like Kedarnath (2018) and Chichchore (2019).

The India fantasy kabaddi has produced many talented kabaddi players during the past five years. These talented fantasy kabaddi players have made it to the top-most level and have made the nation proud. In our today’s post, will relay a story of a young defender from Himachal Pradesh. He became one of the youngest players to be the captain of a team in the online kabaddi games at 11wickets.com Let us have a look at the rise to fame of Telugu Titans’ superstar kabaddi games player Vishal Bhardwaj. The 22-year-old Vishal Bhardwaj was born on January 1st 1997 at a village in Una district of Himachal Pradesh. Unlike his other friends who were passionate about cricket, Vishal developed an interest in the game of Kabaddi at a very young age. He started playing Kabaddi in 8th standard at the age of 12 or 13. Vishal represented his school team in all the Inter-school Kabaddi tournaments. After his brilliant performances at the school level, he entered into his college with the same intensity towards Kabaddi. Looking at his exceptional capabilities at college-level Kabaddi, Vishal was sent to Bilaspur for better professional training. He lived in Bilaspur, which is almost 1,600 km away from his hometown in Himachal Pradesh. However, this didn’t affect Vishal’s concentration as he was very confident of making it through the highest level. Vishal performed consistently and was selected for the Junior National team in 2016. He represented India in 3 major Junior Kabaddi tournaments and even won gold in one of the championships. A breakthrough in Indian kabaddi league In 2016 Bhardwaj was picked up by the franchise Telugu Titans in the kabaddi fantasy game. But he didn’t get much chance and appeared in only two matches. During season 5 in 2017, he performed brilliantly well and was the backbone of Titans’ defence army. Vishal became the third successful defender of the season with 71 points in 22 games and an average of 3.22. During the 6th season in 2018, he was made the captain of his side at the age of 21. Though the Titans have never won the championship and trophy, they have been decent players under Vishal’s leadership. Playing style & signature move of Vishal Bhardwaj Vishal has always been a very calm and composed athlete. His strength, agility and quick decision making has made him one of the star defenders of the league. Vishal’s signature move has been the ‘Ankle Hold’. Ankle Hold is a move which has been specialised this 22-year-old young defender. Ankle hold is one of the most iconic moves by a defender in the game of Kabaddi. In this, the defender uses his firm grip and tremendous strength to grab the opposition raider by the ankle and pull him back as soon as possible so that he doesn’t touch the mid-line. Thanks for reading! Play fantasy sports and enjoy!

Pataakha is based on a short story called Do Behnein by Charan Singh Pathik. Vishal, aided well by his actors and crew, creates a colorful, textured world. Sanya Malhotra and Radhika Madan, who makes her film debut, work ferociously hard to become Badki and Chhutki. Both are fine actors who nail the difficult dialect but this is also a physically demanding role – the sisters are constantly punching each other, rolling in mud or screaming. With blackened teeth and strong body language, they become the characters.

For Episode 20, our guest is a fellow podcaster: [Maxdavinci](twitter.com/MaxDaVinci) of The Lewd Cabal, your go-to podcast for an eclectic selection of topics including deep dives into South Indian cinema, food, sports, and a whole lot more to come. For his debut appearance on The Khandaan, Max chose an evergreen classic: 1992’s Salman Khan-starrer, Suryvanshi. This legendary piece of cinema was allegedly a figment of Salman’s imagination – a film unmatched, as Max points out, in not only Hindi but in all Indian cinema for decades in its scope and concept. The costumes, the special effects, the homage to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the boundless racism, the indifferent songs that at least two of the four people on the podcast have seared into their lizard brain, the camera’s unerring eye for thrusting bosoms… this is a movie that offers much to the discerning viewer. Co-starring an extremely hammy Saeed Jaffrey, a disconcertingly excellent Amrita Singh, a sanskaari Sheeba, Sushma Seth, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan, and Puneet Issar, Suryavanshi is a lot. As usual, we also discuss some of the new releases and trailers – Thugs of Hindustan and Bazaar, as well as Sui Dhaaga, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam and Pataakha. We discuss the sheer and welcome reliability of filmmakers such as Vishal Bhardwaj and Mani Ratnam before somehow ending with plans to watch 1990’s Tum Mere Ho.If there are movies or guests you would like to see featured, do remember to drop us a line at [upodcasting@gmail.com](upodcasting@gmail.com) Give Away: If you want to win 1 of 3 Sui Dhaaga- Made In India goodie bags, head over to https://www.kenz-now.com/campaign/win-sui-dhaaga-made-in-india-goodie-bag/ To hear more from Max you can head over to [the Lewd Cabal page](http://www.thelewdcabal.com/)

Revenge, justice, and betrayal in Shakespeare’s play and in the history of the politically-disputed Kashmir region arise as core topics in this discussion about the Hindi film Haider between Priya Jaikumar (USC) and Bhaskar Sarkar (UC-Santa Barbara.) The two professors interrogate and celebrate the film and play’s ability to combine local cultural specificity and popular accessibility. Arguing Haider offers new understandings of the character of Hamlet, the pair also question the concepts of “the original” and “the derivative.” Series: "Carsey-Wolf Center" [Humanities] [Show ID: 33500]

Arguing Haider offers new understandings of the character of Hamlet, the pair also question the concepts of “the original” and “the derivative.” Series: "Carsey-Wolf Center" [Humanities] [Show ID: 33500]

Mya Gosling is the creator of the popular webcomic Good Tickle Brain, the world's foremost and possibly only stick-figure Shakespeare webcomic. I love Mya's work, she makes Shakespeare super fun. Based on our conversation it's clear to me that her primary goal is to share her love of Shakespeare with others, and that's a good thing. So naturally I spent a bit of time in our podcast talking with My about how she makes money from her Good Tickle Brain webcomic. Of course we also talk about Shakespeare and her favourite shows on the playbill at the Stratford Festival. No spoilers here, you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out. 1) Our thoughts on Rangoon: a novel idea that ends up being a victim of its own indulgence. 2) Despite it's failings, Vishal Bhardwaj deserves credit for trying something different 3) Is Saif Ali Khan's time up? The flatness of his performance compared to the intensity of Shahid and Ranbir does not bode well 4) Trailer review of 'Trapped' - where we wonder if the film has enough to hold an audience for an entire feature length film.
