For many years, commemorations of the two World Wars excluded the memorialisation of soldiers from the British Empire. But campaigners have gradually turned the spotlight on their experiences. In the First and Second World War, approximately 3.8 million soldiers from the Indian subcontinent served in the British Army. Indian and British troops often formed friendships that lasted beyond the wars, bonded in their camaraderie and bravery. Yet there was a ceiling for Indian soldiers, they would never go on to receive top jobs or become commanders. And despite comradery on the front, the top generals saw Indians as lesser. During the evacuation of Dunkirk, the British were given the order to “cut loose your Indians and your mules”. This horrified leaders in Delhi and despite Nehru's passionate antifascism, the Congress began small acts of civil disobedience in protest of India being placed in a war that it didn't sign up to. Listen as William and Anita are joined by Yasmin Khan to discuss the Raj at War, and how World War Two became a catalyst for the end of British rule in India… Twitter: @Empirepoduk Email: empirepoduk@gmail.com Goalhangerpodcasts.com Assistant Producer: Anouska Lewis Producer: Callum Hill Exec Producer: Neil Fearn Learn more about your ad choices. Sublime Knowledge   Take away: The power of understanding and aligning our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs with our goals to create positive change in our lives. The importance of moving beyond limiting beliefs and negative thought patterns, often formed in childhood, to embrace a more expansive view of personal potential and abundance. By practicing self-reflection, asking mentally enabling questions, and tapping into intuition, individuals can rewire their subconscious minds and break free from cycles of fear, doubt, and stagnation. By understanding how our mental faculties work and aligning them with our aspirations, we can lead more fulfilled, purposeful, and abundant lives.   Money Learnings: Alia grew up in New York City with a mother who worked extremely hard to support them after Alia's father passed away when she was 11. She observed her mother working 12 hours a day, seven days a week to pay the bills and support their life in expensive New York City. Her mother's constant work led to medical challenges and a poor quality of life. This experience motivated Alia to seek a different path. In her early 20s, she took control of her life and financial destiny, moving herself and her mother out of New York. Alia's childhood experiences shaped her to be stronger and more resilient against challenges. However, it wasn't until 2018 that she truly began to evolve her understanding of money. She realized that she was not the sole creator of money in her life and that it came from a divine source. This shift in perspective led her to explore multiple income streams and alternative ways of creating wealth that didn't rely solely on trading time for money.   Bio: In March 2022 Alia Yasmin Khan founded Sublime Knowledge, a mindset coaching company in Phoenix, Arizona. She has transformed thousands of lives using methods that she has applied successfully to her own life. With a profound desire to help others be the best version of themselves, Alia knows the importance of learning and serving. She has 20+ years of experience managing, growing, and expanding successful businesses and seeks to share her knowledge about mental strength, discipline and endurance with everyone willing to learn.   Highlights from this episode: Understanding the power of thoughts, feelings, and emotions in shaping our reality and experiences. The importance of setting clear goals and aligning our thoughts and actions with those goals. How meditation and self-reflection can help rewire the subconscious mind for positive change. Shifting from a "trading time for money" mindset to creating multiple income streams. Recognizing that love, compassion, and being of service to others leads to greater fulfillment. Using mentally enabling questions to tap into intuition and find creative solutions. The value of intentionality and feeling fulfilled each day in living an abundant life.   Links: https://sublimeknowledge.com/ https://aliayasminkhan.com/     Richer Soul Life Beyond Money. And, so when a young girl sees something, sees someone that looks like her creating something that she can use, that harks back to her history, her traditions, and her heritage, it's impactful on that woman because that woman will then go on to university, will go on to being an entrepreneur, or will go on to being a successful member of the community. Why failing is magical[16:22] We all fail, and we learn from those. In fact, failing is magical, and I tell them that all the time because you're going to learn how to ski, you're going to fall, but then you're going to get back up again, and that's what's most impactful for you as young women, that you tried something and you got to a certain point, and it grew you.Khalm is more than just a skincare brand[07:55] Khalm is connecting you back to those old traditions that really are more impactful today than ever before.Confidence in the face of failure[10:39] You may fail or you may succeed, but it leverages another opportunity and increases your confidence along the way. Just grab the opportunities and go for it.Show Links:MBC Program at Eccles Khalm SkincareWomen Who Succeed

All these sorts of questions are explored through an exhaustive journey through Chibnall's era, examining every episode, and a multitude of interviews and extras. Along the way, key running themes and storytelling quirks of the era are identified and discussed, in a cumulative analysis capturing how the era was shaped, and how it shifted over time. The character of Yaz is approached from a place of curiosity and empathy. Topics visited along this journey include the idea of storytelling ‘time loops', evolving character writing, infantilisation, the impact of an audience upon how characters are written, character regression and storytelling oscillation, the interplay between offscreen platonic relationships and ‘in-character' relationship shipping, expectations of audience affection, disinterest in drama, claims and positioning of LGBT representation, and many more.… Continue reading →

On the Greek island of Lesvos, refugees from the nearby Moria camp gathered in a fish restaurant for lunch. The owners had converted the restaurant to a nonprofit dedicated to feeding refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and elsewhere. Families sat around tables, laughing, chatting, and playing music. In 2020, Moria burned down leaving 13,000 people unsheltered. Before the fire, the camp was often called a living hell by those stuck in it. But for a few hours a week, refugees could forget their political status. They could get lost in the taste of delicious food and be reminded of home. This is one of many stories Yasmin Khan tells about the power of food in her third cookbook, "Ripe Figs: Recipes and Stories from Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus." Khan's food writing is more than just recipes. We speak to her about the stakes of a good meal in the moments you feel you have little else.Want to support 1A? Pankaj Mishra's Run and Hide tells a story of modern Indian times, as the hidden pasts of wealthy, Gatsby-style tech entrepreneurs must be reckoned with. And to help put this modern India in context, Dr Pragya Dhital will consider the resonances of the tumultuous period of "The Emergency", the response of the Indian government to a period of "internal disturbance" in the 1970s. She discusses the homemade or samizdat style leaflets which journalists like Ram Dutt Tripathi used to great effect. The cuisine of India is a national symbol around the world, but Dr Sharanya Murali explores how this most traditional artform, cookery, can become iconoclastic when utilised in performance art by the likes of Pushpamala N and Raj Goody. And Dr Vikram Visana will consider populism in India, telling us how differing parties are vying to answer questions of national identity which seem increasingly ill-suited to the challenges facing this modern democracy - and one of the key figures he discusses is KM Munshi. Asked for their key cultural figures of India the panel made some eclectic choices. Seek out the short stories of Ismat Chughtai who endured an obscenity trial for her works, and VS Naipaul was viewed as a great chronicler of a crisis in the Hindu struggle with the modern world. Bilkis Dadi was the most recognisable face of the Shaheen Bagh protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the music of Mehdi Hassan was remembered as a culturally unifying force between India and Pakistan. Food offers a unique insight into community and culture. One of the joys of international travel is discovering a region through its food – not just for the pleasure of eating like a local, but for what doing that tells you about people, place and time. After a year of little if any travel for leisure (and perhaps more travel uncertainty ahead too), our panel will be discussing how the discovery of the foods of a nation impacts our cultural understanding of it – and in turn, how increasing or decreasing international tourism can impact a region's culinary landscape. Chair Angela Clutton – food historian, writer and host of the hugely successful Borough Market Cookbook Club – will be joined by panelists Russell Norman, who fell in love with Venice through its food and has spent years using the food of that city to communicate a greater understanding of its history and culture; and Yasmin Khan, whose recently published Ripe Figs is typical of her immersive work in food and travel.

Yasmin Khan's Twitter bio reads: “Challenging stereotypes of the Middle East, one pomegranate at a time.” With her new cookbook, “The Saffron Tales,” Khan has not only delivered a beautifully written book about Persian food but has also challenged us to think about Persian food in entirely new ways. Khan set out in 2013 to write her book because she was fed up with people in making assumptions that Iran equals bombs, nukes, and fanatics. She wanted to show the texture and the beauty she experienced during her own visits to the Iranian countryside. What she could not predict is that the antagonism between the “West” and Iran would only grow greater, especially with the US election of Donald Trump. In this episode, Khan speaks about meeting artisanal chocolatiers in Iran, why London doesn't have great regional Persian restaurants, and why she was denied a visa to the US during the Obama administration. Produced by Juan Ramirez. Music by AF the Naysayer and Blue Dot Sessions.
