Doug talks to grief specialist Ghulam Fernandes to explore the complex world of grief and loss. Through her own powerful journey of multiple personal losses, Ghulam talks about handling grief, building emotional resilience, and transforming pain into purpose. This episode isn't just about dealing with death – it's about understanding how various types of loss impact our lives and learning practical tools to navigate life's challenges while maintaining our goals and vision. KEY TAKEAWAYS Unresolved grief has three main causes: undelivered communication of significance, regrets about things being different/better, and unrealised hopes, dreams, and expectations Grief isn't restricted to bereavement, it can arise from any significant change in familiar patterns of behaviour, including career changes, relationships, and life transitions Common myths about grief like "be strong," "keep busy," and "time heals all wounds" can actually hinder the healing process and keep people stuck in their grief Grief is both cumulative and negative, it doesn't simply go away with time but needs to be actively processed and addressed Self-soothing behaviours like comfort eating, drinking, or gambling often mask unresolved grief and shouldn't be relied upon as coping mechanisms Building emotional resilience and establishing good self-care strategies are crucial for handling grief effectively While we can't change what has happened, we can choose how we respond to it and work to create something positive from our experiences Goal setting plays a vital role in grief recovery by helping create a clear vision and path forward while maintaining healthy boundaries BEST MOMENTS "It's like we carry a backpack and whenever we have difficult things we're not sure what to do with we kind of stuff them in there and then try and carry on." "You don't have to have one big wound, you can die from a thousand paper cuts and if you don't have a way of processing those things and regaining your peace of mind, then those things will sit there and keep being added to." "I want to be able to make a world of difference to those people that come into my path without expending lots of energy, worrying about all the people I can't help." "You can't change what's happened, but you can choose how you respond." "If you don't take care of yourself first, you actually end up with an empty cup and nothing to give." In today's episode, I'm joined by Grief Transformation Coach and Founder of Handling Grief, Ghulam Fernandes. Ghulam learned the hard way that time doesn't heal all. The unexpectedly painful loss of her brother made her realize she hadn't dealt with her mother's death, who passed away when she was only 13. Looking for answers to deal with the unresolved grief from her mother's death and facing her own mortality, she discovered an action-based, step-by-step process for handling grief, which, eventually, she used as a pillar to create her unique Handling Grief Programme. Throughout this episode, Ghulam and I discuss the differences between traditional grief counseling and Ghulam's approach, the lessons she learned from her grief experiences, and the importance of recognizing that every grief journey is unique. Ghulam also shares practical tips on supporting someone through grief, how to avoid unhelpful comments, and why practical help is much better than saying: "let me know if you need anything." Ghulam also shares her thoughts on resilience and finding happiness after loss, why it is crucial to recognize grief's long-term effects, the significance of staying in touch and providing ongoing support to grievers, and more.Tune in to episode 226 and find out how to regain peace, productivity, passion for life, and a sense of purpose after grief. Connect with Ghulan Fernandes I used to think that old people died, and other people died, until I experienced multiple significant losses. I was stuck in the pain of grief for years. At times I felt lost, empty, and hopeless. Lack of the right knowledge, tools and processes meant that I didn't know how to move forward. Sometimes I wondered what the point of life was. People around me didn't know what to say and would often come out with platitudes or unhelpful comments. During my quest in looking for answers, I explored many avenues. Counselling helped some, but when I discovered an action based step by step process for handling grief, it made a huge difference. It gave me a structured, systematic, and gentle process to discover and then deal with my unresolved grief. Everyone's journey is unique. Comparisons are unhelpful. I am passionate about helping others on their grief journey, so they don't spend years stuck in pain and therapy. AS FAR AS THEY CAN RUN takes us to rural to Pakistan, where families with disabled children have few options. Some desperate parents keep their children locked up or even chained. When athletic coaches from Karachi persuade the parents of three teenagers -- Ghulam, Sana, Sajawal – to allow the kids to participate in a sports training program as part of a Special Olympics initiative, the families glimpse the hope that living with disability doesn't have to mean that their children are "useless." But they and the coaches must confront the question of what sports can—and cannot—change. Over a one-year period, Iranian American filmmaker Tanaz Eshaghian follows three disabled children and their families as they grapple with shame and prejudice in rural Pakistan to realize new talents and a sense of belonging through sports. Intimate and unflinching, hopeful and tragic, AS FAR AS THEY CAN RUN is a fascinating look at those who are struggling to find acceptance and worth in a society that had relegated them to the margins. Director Tanaz Eshaghian joins us for a conversation on all of the daunting challenges, physical, logistically and psychologically in shooting the children and their situation, as well as the joy of seeing the benefit the program has on their lives. This episode discusses the contribution of one of the legends of Hindustani classical music, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khansahab. His contribution was not just restricted to classical music, but it can also be seen in popular music, in which he not only sang some of the popular songs himself, but also taught some of the very well known contemporary singers of popular music.
