In this episode, we sit down with Wolfgang Korn, a German architect and author who played a significant role in documenting Nepali architecture history. He shares his journey of skipping German army service, which led him to Nepal, and his experiences with the Kathmandu hippie trail in the 1970s. Wolfgang discusses Kastamandap and Boudhanath, the challenges of measuring Nepali architecture, and how Sukul houses were built without nails. His insights into Bhaktapur history and culture provide a fascinating look at traditional Newar architecture. We also dive into his personal experiences, including his first hashish experience in Nepal, how he found a way to politely reject Nepali food, and his encounter with Aila. He recalls the time when the Nepal government controlled marijuana and shares stories of hippie culture in Kathmandu. Beyond architecture, Wolfgang talks about Nepali sports history, his role in training Nepal's first female football team, and a surprising meeting with Dev Anand in Nepal. Join us as we explore Hanuman Dhoka heritage, Nepal's water resources, and how Wolfgang's work has helped preserve Nepal's architectural legacy.
"I don't think Dev Sahab and Goldie ever pretended they were making art but the artistry was inherent in what they were doing. 'Guide' (1965) is the daddy of all films. In it, Dev Anand's character just wanted to escape his past; he is not in search of the meaning of life. The meaning of life is thrust upon him. He's really the unwilling messiah. Goldie Sahab told me the story is a different beast from the screenplay. At that time, I shook my head as if I understood what he was saying. But it's only now that I am a practitioner that I realise, 'Oh, it was a mantra he was transmitting to me'. The screenplay and story are not the same. That's is why RK Narayan cribbed so much about 'Guide'. Watch the English 'Guide' [which was a flop] - that was the book. Watch the Hindi 'Guide'. It was different." - Tanuja Chaturvedi, author, 'Hum Dono; the Dev and Goldie Story' talks to Manjula Narayan about her book that touches on the professional collaboration of the Anand brothers, Dev and Goldie Anand, who, together, made some of the most memorable commercial Hindi films of the 1950s and 1960s, the power of vintage Hindi film music, and her experience of working at their production company, Navketan Films, as a young graduate fresh out of FTII.
because Filmi Ladies is turning 2! Thanks be to Patron Saint Dev Anand who inspires us to be bigger and better! We celebrate with Do Devs (actually 3, but who's counting?): Dev in a double role in Hum Dono and singular Dev in the singularly delightful Nau Do Gyarah. What are your favorite Dev movies? We deep dive into how our cinema has always reflected our leading political thought of the time, how Dileep Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor were fundamentally different type of heroes than the modern Indian hero. We then analyze the masculine anxieties of the Indian society diving into how the theory of martial races might have impacted it and then finally talk about the men who should have been our ideals of positive masculinity compared to who in reality are.

This week marked the 100th birth anniversary of yesteryear superstar Dev Anand (born 26 September 1923), who has had generations of women swooning over his indomitable — and ageless — style. In episode 1319 of #CutTheClutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta moves away from the news cycle to remember an actor he admired — and how the ‘hero' he grew up watching on the big screen became a friend.
A whole lot of stuff awful and awesome as Abhinandan Sekhri and Rajyasree Sen review the documentary The Supermodels, the movie Jaane Jaan, the podcast SmartLess, and 100 years of veteran actor Dev Anand's cinema. Abhinandan also recommends another Punjabi song. PS: Rajyasree reveals a secret connection between supermodel Cindy Crawford and Dev Anand. Listen to the full episode to find out! Hosted on Acast. Dev Anand (26 Sept 1923 - 3 Dec 2011) is regarded as one of the most charismatic, and pathbreaking directors of Hindi cinema. Celebrating his birth centenary, this podcast also includes his exclusive interview with SBS Hindi after receiving the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award for 2002 for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema.
I really enjoyed the new period drama Jubilee, set in the 40s and 50s, and centered on the aspiration and ambition of a group of people from the world of Hindi cinema. I got a chance to pick the brains of writer Atul Sabharwal (Powder, Aurangzeb, Class of 83) and director/showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane (Udaan, Lootera, Trapped) on the scripting and the making of the show. We talked about everything from the research, casting and lighting of the show to the music and the exquisite closing seven minutes of the final episode. FINALLY we 1) have as guest star the truly wise, witty, funny, and delightful Sal (twitter: @salandthebadpun) 2) dig into Bengali cinema 3) try to enact dramatic poses inspired by our subject matter (spoiler: one of us fails utterly) Suchitra Sen is a unique figure in Indian cinema: she's the sine qua non of Bengali films (no one woman is as critical to an entire body of a language cinema as she), she is highly regarded in both Bengali and Hindi cinema, she resolutely sculpted her professional image, and she walked away from films when she decided she was done and never looked back. We discuss four of her big films in both languages: Saptapadi, Agni Pariksha, Devdas, and Aandhi. Several of Suchitra Sen's Bengali films that we discuss are available on Youtube with English subtitles at excellent TommyDan55 channel: Chaowa Pawa (It Happened One Night (https://youtube.com/watch?v=MNdJAi3xj9w&feature=shares), Agni Pariksha (https://youtube.com/watch?v=rOcC8KZNOSc&feature=shares), Saptapadi (https://youtube.com/watch?v=xRQA9jmK_pI&feature=shares), and several others, including Deep Jele Jai (which Beth watched but does not have strong enough feelings about to add to the podcast discussion; tell her in the comments if you do! https://youtube.com/watch?v=sR682WolT7U&feature=shares). The channel has her Hindi Devdas too! https://youtube.com/watch?v=VIWWvAyKKvg&feature=shares And the great Dekhne Mein Bhola Hai Dil Ka Salouna from Bombai Ka Babu. -------------- Khwaja Ahmad Abbas was the “genius” writer behind most of Raj Kapoor's superhit (and on one occasion flop) films- Awaara, Shri 420, Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Mera Naam Joker. Next up in our series Women Superstars of Indian Cinema: Waheeda Rehman! We LOVE Waheeda Rehman—and frankly we're not sure we can be friends with anyone who doesn't, but does such a person even exist? The major films discussed today are Guide (1965) Kohraa (1964), and CID (1956, her first Hindi role). Neither of us could handle a rewatch of Pyaasa or Kagaaz Ke Phool, no matter how great they are. It seems like this series is also, inadvertently, going to include at least one truly annoying man per episode. Last time it was Raj Kapoor, and this time it's Dev Anand—who, to be fair, is way less irritating than Raj Kapoor and way less irritating in the films we watched than he would be later in his career. Nevertheless, he persisted. https://open.spotify.com/show/7Ib9C1X5ObvN18u9WR0TK9 or Apple Podcasts https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/my-podcasts/show/filmi-ladies/aacadcfe-4195-40a4-ba16-e528118ec892 @filmiladies on Instagram and Twitter Pitu is @pitusultan on Instagram Beth is @bethlovesbolly on Twitter Email us at filmiladies at gmail Our logo was designed by London-based artist Paula Ganoo @velcrothoughts on Instagram https://www.art2arts.co.uk/paula-vaughan
Experts and film historians nod in agreement every time they remember Dev Anand and his love for Urdu. One of the stars of the DilipKumar-Raj Kapoor-Dev Anand triumvirate, Dev was known to enjoy his dialogues and songs written in Urdu. In this special episode of Urdunama we celebrate the legend's love for the language and what could possibly be attributed to his initial training in the language. Tune in!

“Mother, I sit by my window for hours on end, And watch the long trains rumble past” (Trains, Humayun Kabir) Trains. Watching them, travelling in them or waiting for them. Trains offered us an escape. Watching the world pass by through its windows, the fleeting glimpses of incomplete lives outside or falling asleep to their rhythmic sways. We discuss trains and the long journeys we made in them. The books we read in them, the books that featured them, the songs, the films and the legends about trains. It is said trains are the lifeline of India. That’s true. But they also carry its soul. In this episode on trains, we travel through Kipling, Ray, Theorux, Dev Anand, Prem Nazir and Gandhi to understand their role in our popular culture. In spotlight we feature a trailblazer whose work in radio, TV, plays, children’s literature, films and documentaries left a deep imprint on our cultural landscape. Sai Paranjpye is a national treasure and her rich and varied body of work must be celebrated more. We talk about what made her unique in the pantheon of great Indian film directors. Kapil Sibal is not the first Indian politician to trend on Twitter, but perhaps the first one to trend with a dubious adjective (or noun, whatever), idiot. His lack of knowledge about how the internet works was evident when he asked companies like Facebook and Google to prescreen content which is posted by Indian users after he found a few morphed pictures of Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh which showed them in bad light. This year has seen quite a rew RIPs and Dev Anand and Indira Goswami get added to the list. In cricket, Sehwag scores a double century and if you are in Maharashtra, beware of those 500 rupee notes - they could just be fake!
