Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura, Cavalera Conspiracy) joins us for an incredible discussion. Iggor provided the perfect DJ set throughout Day 1 of the NWN/Hospital Fest, capturing the spirit of what the festival was all about. We go into his history from starting Sepultura as a 13 year old in Brazil, to playing with Boredoms in Japan, to collaborating with Prurient and Power Trip, to his current noise explorations and tons more. Iggor has carried the torch of the underground since the early 80s and the flame still burns! For the ExtraNoisextra segment on the patreon, Iggor talks about his gear, field recording in the Amazon, record shopping with Merzbow in Japan and more. This 20 minute segment is in the middle of the episode on the patreon feed.
XIU XIU is an experimental rock group with an eclectic and at times deeply noisy sound, and lyrics that deal with dark and intensely personal subject matter. They are extremely important to me personally going back to my teen years, and were my direct gateway to the world of harsh noise, specifically through hearing a remix of one their songs by THE CHERRY POINT. Jamie Stewart was kind enough to talk to me about the noisier side of XIU XIU, including working with artists such as MERZBOW and PRURIENT, memories of The Smell in LA, drug influenced sound experiments and much more. Three words we had no idea could go together: Naked + Comedy + Show…but apparently, they do. In the city that never sleeps, where dreams are born and laughter is the currency, there exists a comedy club that takes the phrase "bare it all" quite literally. Every month, in Brooklyn, female and male comedians, some you've even seen on the Tonight Show, America's Got Talent, The Late Show and more, gather in the buff, to deliver standup comedy to an audience partially made up of nude and fully clothed attendees. Really, no really? Jason and Peter began investigating so they went to the epicenter, to the guy who organizes, emcees, and performs in the Naked Comedy Show. Billy Procida is a New York City-based stand-up comedian, writer, and the host of: The Manwhore Podcast: Sex-Positive Conversations. He's also the producer and host of "The Naked Comedy Show." IN THIS EPISODE: Bombing in the nude in front of your ex-girlfriend and her unprepared friends. Naked comedy and the male vs female experiences. The reason to do comedy nude. Is standup improved when all your private bits are out there? Jason, a half-nude icon himself reveals what it's like acting while naked. Who's the audience for naked comedy? Peter's Tale: Meeting a work colleague in a totally naked situation. True or false: Younger people, comfortable with nudity, have healthier body attitudes. Comedians who turn down the Naked Comedy Show. Jason's surprising answer to: Does nudity on stage and in films elevate the productions. Manscaping 2023 - what should you look like downtown? Allegedly Andrew Cuomo groped his former assistant, Britany Commisso, feeling her fanny as they stood for a selfie. She said she felt safer sitting down with him on the couch, where they snapped the pic. Prurient accusations aside, there's much more to this story.
Sarah and Amanda do an episode ripped from the headlines with celebrity ghost stories and the secret life of sex toys. Sarah takes a cue from Variety and a few other publications obsessed with the supernatural encounters of the rich and famous, including Cher, Keanu Reeves, and Cate Blanchett. Amanda tells the shocking truth about chastity belts and the problems with their high-tech, modern-day versions. Other subjects covered include one-use white domestic terrorist tools, a period fetish community, and the extra-ness of Joan Collins. Recommendations: Amanda recommends the animated series Gravity Falls. Sarah recommends The Alienist and Search Party. This week we review Prurient's "Casablanca Flamethrower" and Boris's "NO."
In the first of two episodes, Dominick Fernow joins us to discuss the very beginnings of Prurient and Hospital Productions. We begin the journey in '90s Wisconsin as he navigates the worlds of death metal and techno, which eventually leads to the noise underground. While the three of us have all known Dominick for nearly two decades, we all learned plenty of new and incredible information about his most distant past. Join us for some highly enlightening noise history. Noisextra is assisting Hospital Productions to compile a live Prurient box set commemorating the 25th anniversary of the project. If any listeners have a live recording, video or radio show from the years 1997-2006, please email gang@noisextra.com and we will go from there.
Welcome back NTWIC's! That's right, we're back — starting off season 2 strong with a solid discussion on NOISE (Yes, yes that is a genre)! Logan and Aaron start this season off, with Jake joining later in the conversation... you'll see. We're proud of our "big brained" starter for a new season. We hope you will enjoy it, too.
The podcast has been about Techno from the early beginnings. But besides Techno, I really like exploring the boundaries of what electronic music can be. I follow a lot of artists and I have discovered so much beautiful music in the last decade. Some of the tracks don't fit within the sets I usually create. But I really have the need to do something with it. Aftertouch is a podcast I once created as a playground to experiment, but was not active for a long time. This is a reboot and will be posted in the Low Frequency stream. Aftertouch will focus on Ambient, IDM, Noise, Drones, Soundscapes,... You name it. The purpose is to create a mind blowing experience. Some space where you can loose yourself, or find yourself, be creative, unwind or just the opposite. There will be no taking in the podcast, just music. That should speak for itself. I hope you like it as much as I do. All the best! Judith shares her belief that the Law of Attraction can bring positive or negative experiences into your life. Nicola takes the discussion on from there... You can listen to Part 1 here >> On the Show Judith’s still in Trowbridge and this week she’s been challenged by the Aga. She’s had the car serviced in anticipation of more motorway driving during the autumn and winter, is planning to explore a nearby M&S food hall scouring for treats for a visiting client on Monday, and visiting chocolate-boxy Bradford on Avon which inspired a longish piece of writing on Facebook. Nicola is looking forward to the Mani LitFest (though much resistant to the so-called word LitFest) today and the local Arts and Crafts Fair in Pefko’s Garden tomorrow. She and Sarah have enjoyed a nice quiet week and, despite thunderstorms, they’ve even made it to the beach – twice. What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Judith’s attracted three new clients and noticed something strange but very interesting about visitor numbers to her Facebook Business Page. Nicola’s been on a writing retreat in a beautiful garden in Kardamyli where she felt inspired to work on a short story about Greek vampires instead of her novel. Her view is that all writing is good for a writer and Judith agrees with her. Focus of the Week Nicola and Judith always promised to revisit the topic of the Law of Attraction after part 1 in episode 172. Today Judith makes a presentation about what the Law of Attraction means to her, namely that it is the belief that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, people can bring positive or negative experiences into their life and that this Law attracts thoughts, ideas, people, situations and circumstances. Nicola takes the discussion on from there and shares three examples from her own current life where thoughts of the Law of Attraction are uppermost in her mind. Words of the Week Nicola chooses Politics and Judith picks Prurient. Project Updates Judith’s thinking is all about how to round up contributions to the 200th Own It! show next week, and Nicola updates with where she’s at in her two special projects with Jane and Pete, her novel and her regrets about giving up the podcast website and her own vzine. Judith believes both can be reinstated with ease if Nicola chooses. Who or What’s Impressed? Judith was (unusually) impressed with something she saw on X Factor, the Diane Warren moment. And Nicola has fallen in love with the more serious side of the writing of Kate Atkinson. Thanks for listening! Two hours of new noise! Celebrating 20 years of Wolf Eyes and Prurient.
It's an extra long episode of "K Have You Seen" to cover our longest movie yet: Paul Thomas Anderson's breakout hit, 1997's "Boogie Nights." Prurient subject matter collides with poignant humanity and grade-A filmmaking to create a weird, funny, and sad time capsule of the late 70s and early 80s.
