(Conversation recorded on December 4th, 2024)     It is an unfortunate reality that the countries least responsible for the climate and ecological crises we face are often the ones most vulnerable to their effects today and in the future. India – with its population of 1.4 billion, rapidly rising temperatures, and limited resources compared to many developed nations – finds itself at the crossroads of these challenges. What do India's leading scientists and advocates have to say about coping with these extreme pressures?   In this episode, Nate is joined by environmentalist and policy advocate Sunita Narain to discuss the intricate relationship between environmental issues and development, emphasizing the need for economically inclusive solutions. She highlights India's challenges with sanitation, urban mobility, and climate change, while pushing for wiser approaches to governance and community planning. How can the moral and cultural history of India combine with science and innovation to guide policy making decisions? Why does ‘sustainable development' need to go beyond environmental considerations to include the economic availability for each nation's poorest citizens? And perhaps most importantly, how could today's challenges position India as a global leader in creating an economic system that prioritizes the health and well-being of all life on Earth?   About Sunita Narain: Sunita Narain has worked at the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a research and advocacy centre based in New Delhi, since 1982. She is currently Executive Director of the Centre, Treasurer of the Society for Environmental Communications and Editor of the bi-monthly magazine Down To Earth. She is a writer and environmentalist who uses knowledge for change. In 2005, she was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India. She has also received the World Water Prize for her work on rainwater harvesting and for her political influence in developing paradigms for community water management. In 2005, she also chaired the Tiger Task Force, at the request of the Prime Minister, to develop a conservation action plan for the country after the loss of the tigers in Sariska. Sunita Narain was a member of the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change as well as the National Ganga River Basin Authority.   Show Notes and More  Watch this video episode on YouTube ---   Support The Institute for the Study of Energy and Our Future Join our Substack newsletter Join our Discord channel and connect with other listeners

Swami indeed had been preparing him for this right from the 1970s and was visibly and invisibly directing the course of his life, he confides and adds that even now, it is Swami alone who is His greatest God, Guide and Goal.

A photographer's success hinges on access. This is an underlying thread in the tapestry woven in this week's show. Our discussion covers multiple facets and cultural attributes of Indian society, as seen through the eyes of a photographer with a knack for being in the right place at the right time. In this month's episode of the series, Picturing World Cultures, we speak with Indian photographer Pablo Bartholomew about his long career as a documentarian and photojournalist. From his early intimate views of 60s-era hippies launching a counterculture invasion from the West to his photojournalistic coverage of historic events, Bartholomew shares insights about dynamics at work behind the scenes. We also discuss changes to the marketplace for pictures over time, and whether an iconic picture is still able to affect a change in the world. As an antidote to a life chasing the news, Bartholomew embarked on a ten-year documentation of India's remote Naga tribes. In the show's second half, he walks us through his background research and the permissions process involved in photographing tribespeople and their customs with professional lighting gear.  There's also a personal motivation behind Bartholomew's Naga Project. As a child, he had heard many stories about goodwill the Naga showed his father's family during their flight from Burma to India during World War II.  “Principally, what I couldn't wrap my head around was that headhunters, they're supposed to be these ferocious people. Why would they let fair game pass through their backyard, to the degree where they would provide food and shelter?” he says. “So, there was in this savage something very kind. And I wanted to find out what the contradiction was.” Tune in today for more on the Naga tribes and other stories from India! If you haven't already listened, check out all the episodes of our Picturing World Cultures podcast series here.    Guest: Pablo Bartholomew Episode Timeline: 2:16: Pablo describes how the caste system functions as a defining aspect of Indian culture. 7:18: The influx of the Western hippy counterculture in India as recorded in Pablo's earliest pictures. 12:27: Capturing life on the streets of Delhi, Bombay, and Calcutta, a photo essay on Calcutta's Chinatown, and Pablo's work with the renowned Indian film director Satyajit Ray. 17:05: The rise of Pablo's photojournalism career, the dynamics of a photographer's access, and his iconic images of the tragic gas leak at Bhopal. 29:09: Pablo discusses how the work of a photojournalist has changed in the past 40 years. 32:53: Go-to camera gear, the various cameras Pablo's used over the years, and his transition from analog to digital. 36:37: Tips for mitigating the heat and humidity of India, plus equipment for image storage and film scanning. 40:10: Episode Break 41:23: Pablo's long-term project documenting the Naga tribes in Northeast India, his preliminary ethnographic research on the tribes, and gaining permission to photograph with full lighting gear.  51:43: Animist practices within the Naga tribes, and distinctions between tribes within the Naga identity. 1:00:05: Naga rituals it may be too late to photograph, and a memorable festival held by the Konyak tribe. 1:04:09: Pablo's cross-cultural project documenting economic emigres from India who have resettled in the US, France, England, Madagascar, and Portugal. 1:14:38: Pablo Bartholomew answers our PWC Visual Questionnaire.   Guest Bio: Pablo Bartholomew, a self-taught photographer born in New Delhi in 1955. His father Richard was a noted art critic as well as a photographer, allowing Pablo to learn photography at home at a very young age. In his subsequent career of nearly fifty years, Pablo has documented societies in conflict and transition, while also recording intimate details of his own generation maturing amid a changing India. From 1983 to 2004, his photojournalistic work was featured in every major international publication, from National Geographic to Paris Match and beyond. Pablo's photographs have been recognized by World Press Photo on three different occasions, including a 1985 ‘Picture of the Year' award for his riveting image from the Bhopal gas tragedy. In 2013, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for his contributions to photography, and in 2014, he was honored with the status of Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. In Episode 3, we meet the eminent photographer Gauri Gill, recent winner of the prestigious Prix Pictet. We also meet Rajesh Chaitya Vangad, renowned Warli artist & Gauri's collaborator on the body of work Fields of Sight , which is shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize prize 2024. Touching upon two recent publications with Patrick Frey, Gauri opens up to Adira about her life's work and process, thinking through collaboration, representation and what she calls active listening.   Translations:Excerpt 02: 14:14 - 15:42Before anyone else, my parents were like gurus to me; you might say even beyond that. Later on, I learned from Jivya Somha Mashe, a Padma Shri award winning local artist who has done a lot of work for the Warli artfrom and presented it across the world. So I joined him. We had no money in those days, I couldn't afford to go to school. My parents were poor and I had to abandon the traditional Warli way of life to go work for a company outside, which was a very difficult decision for me to make. I depict some of those experiences in my paintings and in this way connect our communal life with my lived experiences. My paintings feature traditional motifs as well as new ones like the company, trains, planes, the city and pollution; this is how we have evolved the art form. We want to say that we are not against education or progress but given the world's present condition, humans need to understand the issues we are grappling with and seek out the right solutions. We try to address this through our artform. Excerpt 03: 17:15 - 17:39(referring to one of his paintings) You can see the fire god, the flies and the butterflies which are all very important to the Warli way of life. Without the animals we share our spaces with, our way of life is impossible. Here you see the peacock and Hirva, one of our gods that lives in the Kuldev (shrine). In this painting that depicts our communal life, it's written that there is no distinction between us and them - all the animals are sacred. Excerpt 04: 18:27 - 18:55We (Gauri and I) traced my personal stories, the stories of my parents, the stories of the village school, stories of moneylenders here, stories of battles, stories from the company I worked for. We went and saw the temple here, the jungle here - the deforestation that's taking place. We revisited all of these relevant locations in the village, took pictures and did many tests before I started to paint over them. Excerpt 05: 23:40 - 24:25It was very difficult to paint over the photographs - If I drew a line with ink, it would sometimes create a tear. I had to be very careful when creating the works - each line was final, we did not redraw or modify a line. Each line had to be painted directly with a stick (I didn't have a brush). It was hard to manage all these aspects in the beginning - drawing the line, thinking about it & keeping my patience - but with time, it started to feel more natural.Hosted by Adira Thekkuveettil - https://www.adirathekkuveettil.com Akshay Mahajan - https://akshaymahajan.in Kaamna Patel - https://kaamna.com Supported by PhotoSouthAsia and Art South Asia Project Produced by Editions JOJOSpecial thanks to Dayanita Singh This podcast is meant to serve as an educational resource and all the recordings used in the episodes are for the purpose of supporting the research.

Meenakshi Sinha (GenX) and her 11 year old daughter, Radhika Chandra (Gen Z), join Yo to discuss a book Meenakshi put together based on letters from her mother, Mridula Sinha, in India while she was in the U.S. working on her PhD. During the episode we explore some of life's biggest lessons that Mridula wanted all daughters to know, the biggest being they are special. Originally the letters were written in Hindi and published in the Air India magazine, Swagat. Meenakshi translated them into English to fulfil her mother's wish – that the wisdom and advice contained in the letters reach a wider audience. Our hope is that you'll experience the same humanity, love, and connection when listening to our episode that one gets from reading this book. About Mridula Sinha (1942-2020) A renowned writer in Hindi and politician in India. She served as the Governor of the Indian state of Goa from August 2014 to October 2019. She authored more than 50 books in Hindi, both fiction and non0fiction. In 2021, she was posthumously awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, for her contributions to the fields of literature and education. Meenakshi is her fourth child and her only daughter. More About Meenakshi: Meenakshi Sinha worked as an economist for several years before finding her calling in art. She paints in acrylics and watercolors, and uses her works of art to raise funds and awareness for Seattle-area nonprofits. Meenakshi lives in Kirkland, WA, with her husband, their 11-year old daughter and a pup named Toffee.  3 Episode Takeaways: 1. The importance of social connections and relationships cannot be overstated and their impact on our well-being and success. 2. Grief can be a powerful way of finding strength in life's hardest moments but let's celebrate the milestones, even the smallest of them, they can help us cover a long distance. 3. We've concluded it is the content of a letter rather than form that is most important in communication – do whatever works best for you!
