Jack Fletcher joins the boys today with tales from the East coast. He was a busy bee during Lockdown, penning a novella called "Joypunks", visiting the psych ward, and getting in a little kerfuffle on the NY Subway. Then Chris Quinn, always a crowd favorite, drops in and completely disapproves of Clint's clip and music choices, as does Connor. Apologies for all the audio/video difficulties.

In this spooktacular Eerie Extra, Such a Nightmare co-host Katherine Troyer speaks with horror author and editor David-Jack Fletcher. We discuss the significance of normalizing LGBTQIA+ identities within the horror genre. This leads to an even bigger discussion of how queer horror can both offer a space for connection and push us beyond our comfort zones. David-Jack shares the vision behind Slashic Horror, his indie horror press that he co-founded with Lee Cross James. And we talk about the magic of crossing genres and the ways his work, including his novella The Haunting of Harry Peck, present the familiar in unfamiliar ways (or perhaps the other way around) through his genre-blending writing. This interview occurred on January 4, 2024; the episode first aired on January 30, 2024. David-Jack Fletcher is a writer and scholar hailing from Australia. With a PhD from Macquarie University in Cultural Studies, he wrote for over a decade in an academic setting before—in his words—jumping out of academia to pursue his dream of becoming a horror author and editor. To that end, he has a Post-Graduate Certificate in Editing and Publishing from the University of Southern Queensland, and he completed an internship with Sydney-based Spineless Wonders. Additionally, he was awarded a mentorship with the Australasian Horror Writers Association (AHWA) in 2022, undertaken with award-winning author Paul Mannering. David-Jack has published short stories in several horror anthologies across the UK, the US and Canada, and has appeared in international podcasts and interviews. Furthermore, his debut gay horror-comedy, The Haunting of Harry Peck, was published by Rack & Rune Publishing in February 2022 and became an international Amazon bestseller. And his latest award-winning novel, Raven's Creek is now available through all major retailers, published through his own imprint, Slashic Horror. David-Jack Fletcher is an award-winning Australian author, specialising in LGBTQI+ horror fiction. He dabbles in comedy-horror and dark fiction, but his true love is body horror. His debut novella, The Haunting of Harry Peck, is a 2022 Amazon international best-seller across several lists including Gay Fiction, Horror, and Two-Hour Literature. Raven's Creek (2023) won the Bookstagram Award for LGBTQ+ Novel of the Year, and is also a best-seller. He has also appeared in several anthologies across the US, Canada, and the UK. David-Jack's next novel is due for release in 2024, titled, The Count, which is a psychological body horror focusing on bloodlust and the looming certainty of death. He is also a qualified editor, operating a small online business, Chainsaw Editing, where he specialises in copyediting and developmental editing for horror/thriller, dark fiction, mystery/suspense, and the occasional historical romance. More recently, David-Jack co-founded Slashic Horror Press, which focuses on queer horror. When not writing and editing, David-Jack can be found on the couch with a book, cuddling his dogs and his husband.
Dr. Fletcher explains how he attempts to establish that Learning Disabilities are real. Likewise, he also describes the hypotheses in research surrounding subtypes of dyslexia.
Jack Fletcher argues in his book, Learning Disabilities from Identification to Intervention, that subcategories of learning disabilities are arbitrary, and that based on what we know about learning, Reading Fluency should not be an SLD because all areas of learning require automaticity. Meanwhile, reading fluency across the nation is lacking proficiency. Considering reading fluency in this current climate may be a serious lack of consideration for these trends in general education.
Jeremy Miciak and his colleague, Jack Fletcher, from the University of Houston Texas Center for Learning Disabilities argue that cognitive testing is not necessary for the identification of SLD through an SLD Manual with the TEA logo on it. He argues that cognitive testing through any of the 5 PSW methods are not reliable or valid, and that cognitive testing does not do a good job of effectively guiding instruction. As an alternative, he poses a TCLD or Hybrid Model that incorporates but formal achievement assessments and detailed progress monitoring data.
Aussie horror writer David-Jack Fletcher joins me from Down Under to talk about queer politics, “gay horror,” comic books, comedy in horror, and all kinds of goodness! Crikey!

He is the Events Chair for the African Student Association and the Public Relations Chair of the Political Science Club. Kyle is double majoring in political science and philosophy with the hopes of going to law school. He plans on continuing his advocacy through civil rights law, criminal defense law, and human rights law. The Student Solidarity Committee is organizing in solidarity with food service workers on campus who are in the middle of an organizing drive. The solidarity committee released what they are calling the SWORD Plan (Students and Workers Organizing for Real Defenses) which is a model for how we should be building solidarity in the wake of the pandemic. - JUST GOT CARD CHECK NEUTRALITY!!! And, Jack Fletcher is the co-founder of the Student Coalition for Change at Temple University. Kyle is a junior pre-law major at Temple and the co-founder of the Temple Coalition for Change. Last week, students, faculty, parents, staff, and community members held a car caravan, urging the university’s administration to cancel their plans to return to face-to-face classes. Protests are now a pretty standard feature on campus.
