No one ever said the future would be easy. But I think we all saw the glimmer of a dream, somewhere in the sky that night. The tiniest spark of hope that we can change our fate. Who could say? That moment has come and gone. This week, Rick is joined by Chris (Retro Hangover Podcast) and Jon to focus on one of the black sheep of the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XIII. The game certainly has a reputation - but is it earned? In the episode, we go over the presentation, the fantastic score (NOT by Uematsu!), the controversial datalog, and the troubled development. Is XIII worth a reexamination? You'll have to tune in to find out - do it up!Post mortem on FF XIII in GameDev magazineMore Retro Hangover PodcastClick on the following to find PPR on the web!PatreonJoin our DiscordTwitter Instagram Bluesky Thank you for listening! It's been a year since our first episode, but the internet's biggest retrospective series, Backtrack, is back! And this week: we're deep-diving on Final Fantasy XIII. In a summer where Baldur's Gate 3 and other bigger releases are happening: why are we talking about one of the most divisive Final Fantasy entries, you ask? Because we had the itch for more Final Fantasy after FFXVI, and well, because we're sick, of course. Released in North America in 2010 on the PS3 and Xbox, FFXIII split the fandom and had us asking pivotal questions: Why is it so linear? What the hell is a L'cie? What accent is Vanille using? Is this the death nail for Square? It's a confusing and fascinating game of terrible lows, bad story beats and character work, but it also holds many things worth praising: cutting edge graphics, the music, and new turn-based combat elements with the stagger and Paradigm systems. (We're a big fan of gameplay here at the Save Room and the Paradigm system had its hooks in us). The game spawned two sequels and the stagger-based combat system has been a franchise staple since so even with the negativity around it, it's impact has been lasting. While it's nowhere near our favorite entry we still find a lot to love and talk about and made it our focus to subject you, the listener, to it. Enjoy!
Seven years in the making, Lost Signals is Night School's difficult second album. It starts strong by playing the hits, and shines in its atmosphere and dialogue system, but fades where it should crescendo. In the roundup: ASUS ROG Ally, Dead Space 2023, FFXIII, Venba, Dave The Diver. And many thanks to the show's latest patron, Arti! Never Gonna Give Yeul UpFabula Nova Crystallis, the high-concept collection of Final Fantasy games dating from 2006, resulted in five games of varying tone and execution. Retro Encounter spent much of August playing and discussing Final Fantasy XIII, and today three panelists break down and lift up the rest of the family, including the former Agito, Final Fantasy Type-0, and the Versus XIII successor, Final Fantasy XV. How clear is Final Fantasy XIII's story? Not exactly Crystal. Final Fantasy XIII has a wild ride to the finish, and three Retro Encounter panelists cap off their personal experiences playing it by reacting to FF XIII's remarkable design changes, confusing character motivations, and beautiful imagery in its final chapters. So who did we bring to the final battle? Why are there so many metaphors for abandonment in the game? How does Square-Enix ruin this beautiful ending in future games? Listen for all of this and more! This week we're finishing out the Vile Peaks! Lightning announces her crazy plan and goes on her own way, with Hope on her heels (and later, hooves.) Vanille and Sazh go on a much jauntier and jazzier trip through a processing plant.
This week we catch up with Sazh and the crew as we blast off from Lake Bresha, as well as subterranean Cocoon proper, before crashing right back into The Vile Peaks. The party splinters, but we get oodles of juicy flashbacks.
Thunderbolts and Lightning / Very very frighteningFinal Fantasy XIII, one of the most divisive games in the world's most popular Japanese RPG series, is certainly old enough to be considered Retro, but its style and tone are anything but. Our panelists are one FF XIII veteran, one FF XIII neophyte, and one lapsed player; they're unkind to the linear corridors and grating personalities of the first half of FF XIII, but understanding of the game's troubled development history and appreciative of its stunning visuals, beautiful music, and frantic combat.
