Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth ----- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all time[1] and were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form.[2] Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. J. Ivy was born March 3, 1976 as James Ivy Richardson II in Chicago, Illinois to James Ivy Richardson Sr. and Pamela Richardson. His father was a Disc Jockey and On-Air Personality, who went by the name Jim Richards. Jim Richards' highlights included hosting the morning hour show on Chicago's popular radio station WVON,[2] and his mother was a registered nurse. J. Ivy grew up on Chicago's South side with his family until the age of 14 before moving to the South Suburbs of Chicago, where he attended Rich Central High School. Ivy discovered his poetry talent during his junior year when his English teacher asked him to perform a piece he had written for a routine homework assignment.[3] He performed in front of the student body and received a standing ovation. J. was heavily influenced by his mother, who supported his budding talent by encouraging him to continue writing and publish his burgeoning body of work. After his successful school performance, J took his poetry passion as a serious hobby and began regularly writing and performing well into his college years. J. Ivy attended Illinois State University, where he became known on campus as "The Poet" and delved deeper into the art form. After college, J. Ivy returned to Chicago and frequently performed on the local arts circuit. As his popularity grew, J. Ivy was featured several times on Chicago's WGCIradio station and later became the host of "Rituals," (from 1997 to 2000) the most popular poetry night in Chicago and perhaps the nation at that time. He was eventually asked to come on Russell Simmons' HBO Def Poetry Jam. He received a standing ovation for his performance of "I Need to Write"[4] and was invited back for two encore appearances in later seasons where he performed his signature poems "Dear Father" and "Never Let Me Down." Fellow Chicagoan Kanye West heard about J. Ivy from mutual friends while he was working on his debut album The College Dropout for Roc-A-Fella Records. He contacted Ivy and offered him the opportunity to be on the song, "Never Let Me Down" which also featured Jay-Z. The College Dropout album earned a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The night J. Ivy recorded his verse on "Never Let Me Down," he heard music from a singer named John Stephens. J. Ivy was so inspired by John's music that he began to call him John Legend. J. Ivy is also featured in the first episode of the Kanye three part documentary Jeen-yuhs. His distinct hip-hop poetic style caught the attention of many who were not accustomed to hearing poetry incorporated into music in this manner which led him to collaborating with many artists including John Legend, Estelle, Slum Village, Maurice Brown, Smoke DZA, and more. On October 26, 2010, J. Ivy released his second studio album "HERE I AM", which features guest artists Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets, Jessica Care Moore, Jesse Boykins III, Blitz the Ambassador, Chris Rob, Amanda Seales, Mikkey Halsted, and more. In 2014 J. Ivy released a mixtape titled, "Diggin' in the Papes Vol.1", which features a host of collaborative records Ivy has created with Hip-Hop artist and producers like Crooked I, The Cool Kids, Ski Beatz, Slum Village, Carl Thomas, Tall Black Guy, and more. In 2017 J. Ivy released his third studio album, "My Daddy's Records", an album created for his book "Dear Father: Breaking the Cycle of Pain." J. Ivy is currently the Chicago Chapter President of the Recording Academy and is the first Spoken-Word Artist to hold a Chapter President seat in the history of the Recording Academy. In 2012, J. Ivy followed up his album "HERE I AM" with the release of his book "HERE I AM: Then & Now," a compilation of the album's lyrics, stories regarding the inspiration for the album, and additional poetry. In January 2014 J. Ivy inked a book deal with Beyond Words Publishing, an imprint of Atria Books & Simon & Schuster, for the January 2015 release of his new book "Dear Father: Breaking the Cycle of Pain",[6] which is based on J. Ivy's poem "Dear Father" (as seen on HBO Def Poetry). In addition to his voice, Ivy has been a featured in numerous ads and served as a spokesperson for national corporate initiatives. He has been a model for both Mecca and LRG's national print-ads as well as a spokesperson for Ford Urban.com alongside Tarrey Torae, Rocsi from BET's 106 & Park and MTV's VJ Sway Calloway. J. Ivy was the sole voice and face in Verizon's History in the Making Campaign, which earned him a Gold Clio Award for the campaign's commercial, which was shown in movie theaters nationwide. This campaign was directed by Bob Giraldi, who directed Michael Jackson's "Beat It." J. Ivy's musical endorsements have also included extensive work with Allstate Insurance's Beyond February initiative. J. Ivy's voice has also been heard on 2013 Benjamin Moore & Co. Paint Commercial, 2013–15 Nissan Commercials, HBO Boxing, Monday Night Football, CBS Sports, MTV's Who's Got Game, and in the 2009 and 2011 NFL seasons, he was featured on the introduction for the entire season of NBC's Sunday Night Football alongside Faith Hill. J. Ivy supports programs that bring arts into the school system. He is a regular performer in Chicago Public Schools. J. Ivy was a guest speaker/performer at Deepak Chopra's 2012 Annual Sages & Scientists Symposium and was the official MC for the 2013 & 2014 edition.[7] Additionally, J. Ivy has conducted poetry workshops and given performances for Reading Is Fundamental, The Kanye West Foundation, and Steve Harvey's Mentoring Camp For Young Men, where he presented his Dear Father Initiative, which teaches the power of forgiveness and promotes social emotional healing through the exercise of writing and journaling. J. Ivy has appeared on many programs and series, including: ER, The Martha Stewart Show, ABC's BCS Selection Show, ABC's All-America Team Show, ABC's FedEx Orange Bowl Championship Game, ABC's Monday Night Football, ABC's NBA Finals, Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on HBO, HBO's Bob Costas Now, HBO Boxing, MTV's Who's Got Game, MTV's 2004 New Year's Eve Bash (2004), MTV's Black History Month Special (2004), MTV's My Block, VH-1's Best Year Ever (2005), B.E.T.'s Lyric Café, BET's Black Carpet Series, B.E.T.'s Harlem Nights, the independent film, Backstabbers (1999), ESPN's 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and B.E.T.'s "Ali: The People's Champ, which won a NAACP Image Award. In 2018 Ivy's national T.V. commercial for AARP premiered on Super Bowl Sunday during the episode of NBC's This Is Us and has run through 2019. In January of 2019 J. Ivy wrote for, starred in, and narrated B.E.T.'s documentary "Martin: The Legacy of a King." He was also featured in Episode 1 of AMC's [1] "Hip-Hop: The Songs that Shook America." 2022.09.07 - 0615 – Voice Director SkillsThe skills of a director[1]· They are a bridge between the actor and client. They are likely to work with voice artists more often than the script writer or the sharp-suited client, so they can explain what's going on, know what language to use, how to get the best out of you and how to get the written word to be an effective spoken word. They understand that voice work is an art and not a science. Oh, and that sharp-suited client? They may also be sharp-tongued as well, giving brash and unhelpful criticism of your performance. A director will be a mediator, interpreting and communicating that a bit more helpfully. · A director or producer is a ‘second pair of ears', giving objectivity and suggestions: “try it this way”, “why not alter your pitch”, “perhaps if you slowed down a bit…”. After all a script is not necessarily black and white but fifty shades of grey (no, not like that), there are interpretations and someone else may help you see them. They coax and explain, to bring out your best performance, giving collaboratory ‘notes' rather than ‘feedback'.· They may be your ‘point of contact' in the session, introducing you to others who may be in the production area, the client, writer, editor, runner and so on; show you into the studio and adjust your mic stand and headphone level, ask if you want to stand or sit, provide water and possibly even give you time and ‘permission' to prepare with warm-up exercises such as shoulder rolls, neck stretches and lip trills.· They have the creative overview of the whole piece, how your character fits in and interacts with other ones, the brand voice, and the overall marketing strategy. They know the character you are playing, the purpose of the project, the tone that's needed, the target audience, the visuals your voice is part of and so on. Especially in animation and gaming, where the lines are often recorded separately, the director gives you the context for your part so there's a better overall listen and experience for the player or viewer: what you're reacting to, what's happening around you, your part in a conversation or story arc. They may provide lead-in lines for you to bounce off from, and so give a more authentic response.· They know about sound, so will press buttons and fade-up, err, faders, to make the very best of your unique voice. Although you are being given direction and of course the people who are paying you have the final decision, what happens in the studio should be a collaborative process. Get to know, like and trust studio directors:· They may support you and your interpretation of the script if there's a disagreement in the control room· You may get to meet them in the future on another job· Heck, they may recommend you for another job. [1] Again, I am using the term ‘director', but actual job titles and responsibilities will vary from different studios and stations. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. About Ed: Ed Lewis is a Voice Director for Video Games, Animation, Audiobooks, Commercials, Documentaries, Promos and for pretty much anything else you want him for. Ed's extensive experience casting Film, Television and Theatre for ten years, paired with his actor training from the University of Michigan give him a unique perspective on how to approach Voice Over projects. He treats his work as a VO Director exactly the same as his time directing auditions for The Wire, Chappelle's Show, 24 and others. Ed's experience working in casting with amazing directors like David Simon, David Koepp, David Esbjorson and all other sorts of Davids has taught him how to direct projects from children's animation to first-person shooters. Communicating with actors can be a challenge, but Ed has the vocabulary, insight, experience and knowledge to communicate the client's vision and to make the recording sessions productive with even the most difficult and complex individuals. What did casting directors do during the pandemic? It's not the casting director's job to make the choices for you, it's that actor's job. You don't have to throw a ton of ideas out, you have to settle on your choices. Casting directors are put under such rigorous standards, actors need to realize that CD's have so much going on. Audiobook: Prepping is your friend! Prepping for Commerical and VO auditions: Watch a lot of commercials! Watching commercials online vs watching on TV: If you don't know a product exists, you're not going looking for it as opposed to watching tv commercials on cable, these products come up. It's not about your voice, it's about your acting and you got to make a full scene. Video games: Play a lot of video games There are so many roles right now for women, women who can fit into that world and understand the action world, there is a huge market Casting Directors love actors, they want you to succeed! His pet peeve? Apologizing for your work!

For those of you that have been listening to “Live with Squacky” for a while now (either Season 1 or in YouTube format before this) – you know that animation and character work is my favorite type of voiceover work to do! So when I get the chance to interview actors that are super pros in these genres of voice acting, it's even more exciting for me!! My special guest today is a top tier talent in the voice acting world. I met Elley Ray Hennessy for the first time in 2012 or so at a VO conference I attended in Toronto. I was so impressed with her level of creativity and her ability to get an entire room of people to follow her guidance in creating characters. I had the chance to attend a session with her again at VO Atlanta after that and was again impressed with her ability to give such awesome direction to get actors to reach their highest level of performance. She is truly one of the best voice actors out there! ELLEY has been traversing the stages, film sets, television and radio studios for over 40 years, delighting audiences worldwide. Her talent and compassion to share it are "unparalleled." Elley has performed in over 300 theatrical productions, with hundreds of on-camera series and movies to her credit and voiced literally thousands of commercial campaigns, animated series, animated movies and games. Enjoy Part 1 of this episode! Part 2 will be released on Tuesday, February 15 at 8am ET on Apple Podcasts and all podcast platforms. What was the first Georgian song taught in the UK, and how did it come about? How can Georgian songs be used in theatre and ensemble training? And just how many songs are in the book 99 Georgian songs? Joan Mills, Voice Director at the Centre for Performance Research (https://thecpr.org.uk/), talks about tending the flame of living traditions - influenced by her recent interview of Sam Lee (https://soundcloud.com/samleesongs) and reflections on Sheila Chandra's music ‘Weaving My Ancestors' Voices' (https://www.sheilachandra.com/). She speaks of ‘Points of Contact' a concept that inspired many ‘Giving Voice' Festivals. Our wide ranging conversation covers: experimental voice practitioners; approaches to educating both actors and singers; her ‘legacy' bringing the book 99 Georgian Songs to life with the help of Joseph Jordania (https://twitter.com/drjordania) after the untimely death of its originator - Edisher Garakandize. She sees the Continuum as being “like a bridge, but also like a wheel”. Disney animators are some of my most favorite people to interview! So you bet I jumped at the chance to talk with Tony Bancroft, a legendary animator and movie maker who wears all kinds of hats. We talked about his role as voice director of the Lionsgate movie, Red Shoes, and the Seven Dwarfs- and yes, I asked him how he felt about Disney's live-action Mulan. Tony, if you weren't aware, directed the original animated film!
Here's part two of my interview with producer and voice director, Jeff Howell. Chuck and Stacey are honored to welcome a living legend in the voice over industry, 8-time Daytime Emmy winning voice director, Andrea Romano. In Part 1 of this special 3-part episode series, Andrea begins the story of how her personal and professional dreams began to come true growing up in Long Island, New York with her large, supportive family. When friend and colleague, Ginny McSwain called to tell Andrea she was leaving Hanna-Barbera, she jumped at the chance to apply for the casting director job working alongside, Gordon Hunt. Andrea shares her experiences working with acting greats like Daws Butler, Jonathan Winters and William Christopher as well as helping start voice over careers for Mark Hamill and Jessica Walter. While still at Hanna-Barbera she was able to work on other projects like DuckTales, Rescue Rangers and Winnie the Pooh. A fearless risk taker, Andrea signed on to direct for the newly formed Warner Brothers TV animation where she started working with Steven Spielberg on his new productions.
