"Mamushi," the fourth single from Megan the Stallion's album Megan was not supposed to be a huge hit. But thanks to a viral dance, the song has become the first song on the Billboard Hot 100 to feature Japanese lyrics since 1963. With. a feature from rapper Yuki Chiba and a beat from producer Koshy, "Mamushi" creates the kind of cross-cultural musical collaboration that helps correct a long record of U,S, pop stars appropriating Japanese culture. What's up to my salacious sables and ginger-bellied blacksnakes! Welcome back to the BNP everybody and dang, do I have a tasty platter of some delicately seasoned content for all y'all today! It is my absolute pleasure to welcome to the BNP, esteemed animator, director and storyboard artist Lubomir Arsov. Lubomir is a storyboard artist, character artist and an innovative, original animator, and he has worked for such major productions as The Ice Age and The Book of Life.I discovered Lubomir's animated short film In Shadow the other night while searching for trippy cartoons on the Interwebs, and it absolutely blew me away. In Shadow is a 13 minute long journey into the deep, dark underbelly and collective Unconscious of modern Western man. If that sounds like it would be gruesome and spooky, you'd be correct. Arsov's work tackles the hidden secrets and buried taboos that in many ways define our modern world, even while they are largely ignored (at least consciously) by the masses. In Shadow drags this horrific darkness out into the light, and ultimately the film is an uplifting and confronting invitation to rehabilitate our darkest personal and societal shames, and to bathe our fears and hatred in the light of Infinite Awareness.  Definitely check it out!! You can find In Shadow on Vimeo, YouTube, and many other sites. This episode is Part One of my chat with Lubomir. Part Two drops next week. Support Lubomir! Find him on IG @lubomirarsov to keep up with his latest and ongoing visionary projects. What a blessing to speak with such a powerful artist. I'm excited to share this conversation with the world. Please help keep Barbarian Noetics on the air by becoming a patron for just $1/month at patreon.com/noetics.  You receive a dream interpretation coupon, access to bonus content and an original haiku when you sign up! Follow me on IG @conantanner. Spread the word and tell a friend about the BNP! Also I need reviews pretty please??? Also 5 stars meow mew and subscriptions mew. Until next week everyone, stay real and be excellent to one another. One Love,Conan TRACKLIST FOR THIS EPISODEHerb Albert and the Tijuana Brass - Spanish FleaR.A. the Rugged Man - After Life (feat. This week we welcome Japanese Hip Hop scholar and reporter for Vice News, Dexter Thomas, and we talk a little bit about Vice News but mostly about Dexter’s outsider approach to journalism and the freedom he feels as a Black reporter at Vice in not being obligated to maintain the myth of a neutral perspective. Dexter shares his path to Vice, from college DJ to PhD in Asian Studies at Columbia University, freelance writer to the LA Times. We dive into hip hop music and culture in Japan, from its right-wing nationalist strains to its complicated relationship to Blackness, American imperialism and Black politics. That brings us to the hypersegmented world of TikTok, how today’s internet can be seen as isolating and reducing common language but also allows for new community and voice...and as powerful a space for activism as the streets. Ultimately, we come to a place of hope in our current moment, seeing the opportunity to acknowledge things that have been broken in America for a long time, and making it clearer that nothing will move forward without work.As a closing thought, we point you to the bonus minisodes we’ll be releasing while we’re on semester break – “What’s Making Us Sappy” – where we share recent guests’ media recommendations to broaden your winter watch/read/play/listen list.Visit the episode page for the full transcript of this conversation! Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Some Japanese cultural references mentioned in this episode:Tokyo destinations: Takadanobaba, Akihabara, Yoyogi ParkKogyaru fashion (including deep tanning)Nanking MassacreBooks mentioned in this episode:Hip-Hop Japan by Ian CondryThe Soul of Anime by Ian CondryBlue Nippon by Taylor AtkinsRace for Citizenship by Helen Heran JunMusic featured in this episode:Gauze (Japanese Hard Punk)Zeebra, Street Dreams (Japanese Hip Hop)SUNDAY SCHOOL, Lucien Hughes (Vaporwave)Last Summer Whisper, Anri (City Pop)Activism on TikTokSome background on 4Chan2020 protests in PortlandDexter’s Vice reportingListen to our “What’s Making Us Sappy” minisodes - make sure you subscribe to get the latest!NPR’s Pop Culture Happy HourHenry’s recommendations:Utopia (2020, Amazon, based on an earlier British show)The Good Lord Bird (Showtime)Share your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! Yo . One two, one, two, yo live in effect. Yo before we go on to side 2 or side b of this mega late show podcast release, i got a little announcement, man!! This episode of the podcast is featuring one of the most prestigious figures in Tokyo hip-hop culture. Shes been involved in far too many projects to mention and has worked along side some of the most notable people in Tokyo. This episode we have the illustrious DAISHA HUNTER. Daisha Hunter is a renaissance woman of media, entertainment, and Hip Hop scenes in Tokyo. She lived in Japan from 2006-2015 and "DaiWu" returned to celebrate her 36th Chamber Year and love of the WuTang Clan with her Japan Family. She was the first Black female DJ in Tokyo starting from a hobby and love of Baltimore Club Music and D.C. Go-Go. She then turned her access of Japanese clubs into an opportunity for artists, DJs, and brands to perform and produce. After launching her company ENTokyo, Daisha developed and hosted some of the earliest music performance events bringing together Japanese and expats whose networks still exist today. From marketing campaigns, brand activations, event production, Japanese Hip Hop touring DJ, creating the foodie hashtag #FatnessFirst, and being the self proclaimed Black Ambassador of Tokyo - her efforts to unite the foreigner, Japanese, and military communities in entertainment continue to succeed her time in Japan.
