En mai 2014, un événement inédit a secoué le monde bancaire : BNP Paribas, première banque française, a accepté de payer une amende colossale de 8,97 milliards de dollars au gouvernement américain. Le motif ? La banque avait contourné les embargos imposés par les États-Unis à Cuba, l'Iran et le Soudan entre 2004 et 2012. Ces pays étaient considérés par Washington comme des États soutenant le terrorisme ou violant les droits humains.Quels faits étaient reprochés exactement ? BNP Paribas avait réalisé, via certaines filiales, des transactions en dollars pour le compte de clients liés à ces pays. Or, toute opération en dollars transitant à un moment donné par le système financier américain est soumise à la législation des États-Unis. Cela signifie que même une banque étrangère peut être poursuivie à partir du moment où elle utilise la monnaie américaine. C'est l'un des points clés de ce dossier.La banque a reconnu avoir non seulement effectué ces paiements, mais parfois mis en place des procédures visant à masquer l'identité des clients ou l'origine réelle des fonds pour éviter les contrôles américains. Sur le plan du droit américain, la sanction était donc légale : la banque avait violé les règles de l'Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), qui encadre les embargos.Là où le dossier devient explosif, c'est sur le plan du droit international. Beaucoup d'experts et de gouvernements ont dénoncé une sanction « extraterritoriale ». Autrement dit, les États-Unis appliquent leurs lois à des entités étrangères, opérant hors de leur territoire, simplement parce qu'elles utilisent la monnaie américaine ou un serveur situé aux États-Unis. Pour nombre de juristes, cela revient à imposer au reste du monde la politique étrangère américaine.Les critiques soulignent que BNP Paribas n'a pas violé le droit français ni le droit international, et que les embargos américains n'engageaient que les États-Unis. Pourtant, Washington a considéré que l'utilisation du dollar suffisait à justifier son intervention. Ce type de sanction a depuis été utilisé contre de nombreuses entreprises européennes, provoquant un réel malaise diplomatique.L'affaire BNP a ainsi mis en lumière un rapport de force : les États-Unis disposent d'une arme économique puissante — le contrôle du dollar — qui leur permet d'étendre leur influence bien au-delà de leurs frontières. She was the longest-serving prime minister of Bangladesh since the country's independence and the longest-serving female head of government in the world. Her premiership was characterized by dictatorship, oligarchy, and crimes against humanity. She resigned and fled to India following the July Revolution in 2024, and in November 2025, she was found guilty of crimes against humanity by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal and sentenced to death in absentia.Hasina is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh's founding president, and is a member of the Tungipara Sheikh political family. She had little presence in politics before her father's assassination in August 1975. Afterwards, she took asylum in India, became involved with the Awami League, and was elected as its president – a position which she continues to hold. After returning to Bangladesh in 1981, she and the Awami League became involved with the pro-democracy movement against the military rule of Hussain Muhammad Ershad, culminating in the 1990 Bangladesh mass uprising and the restoration of parliamentary democracy in the 1991 Bangladeshi general election.Following a narrow loss to Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the 1991 election, Hasina, as leader of the opposition, accused Zia's BNP of electoral dishonesty and boycotted the Parliament. This was followed by violent demonstrations and political turmoil, causing Zia to resign in favour of a caretaker government. Hasina was elected prime minister in the June 1996 election, and she was succeeded by Zia in July 2001. During the 2006–2008 political crisis, Hasina was detained on extortion charges. After her release from jail, her party won the 2008 election, and she became the prime minister for a second term.During Hasina's second premiership, Bangladesh witnessed democratic backsliding and widespread human rights abuses. Numerous politicians and journalists were systematically and judicially punished for challenging her views. A 2024 government report estimated that more than US$16 billion was annually laundered from the country during Hasina's tenure from 2009 to 2024, adding up to more than $240 billion over 15 years. Her government provided assistance to nearly a million Rohingya who had entered the country fleeing the genocide in Myanmar.In 2022, anti-government protests broke out demanding Hasina's resignation. These were followed in July 2024 by fresh student protests which demanded the reform of quotas in government jobs. The protests were met with brutal crackdown by law-enforcement agencies and paramilitary forces, resulting in massacre of students. By August, the protests intensified into a mass uprising against the government, culminating in Hasina resigning and fleeing to India. In February 2025, a UN OHCHR report found that she personally directed and coordinated the crackdown and that it may amount to crimes against humanity. In November 2025, she was convicted of crimes against humanity by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal and sentenced to death in absentia. Communities Secretary Steve Reed, who is in charge of local government, has said he is “appalled” that serving London councillors are campaigning to become MPs in another country. He wrote to Tower Hamlets Council after it was revealed by The Standard that at least two of the borough's elected representatives had launched campaigns to stand in upcoming elections in Bangladesh. Residents in Mile End have called on Sabina Khan to resign after she announced she was standing for the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) in polls in February. Independent councillor Ohid Ahmed, who represents Lansbury ward in Poplar, is also campaigning to become a BNP candidate. It comes as government envoys were sent into Tower Hamlets Council last year, over concerns about the party's leadership, governance and culture. Svenska vapenfabriker byggde moderna stridsflyg, ubåtar, stridsfordon, stridsvagnar och mindre vapen som raketgeväret Carl Gustaf.Samtidigt byggde vi mest skyddsrum per capita. Alla människor i Sverige i åldrarna 16 till 65 år hade civilförsvarsplikt med krav på att delta i återkommande övningar.Historia Nu Dok är podden som går historien på djupet. I den här dokumentärserien i tre delar undersöker vi Sveriges roll i det kalla kriget, om kriget någonsin var nära och hur beredda vi var om kriget blev oundvikligt. Detta är den tredje och sista delen av Historia Nu Dok – Sverige och det Kalla Kriget – som gjordes i samarbete med förlaget Historiska Media.Från 1949 till i mitten på 1960-talet ökades Sveriges militära utgifter i kronor och ören till samma summor som under andra världskriget. Stay Behind-rörelsen levde sedan vidare under kalla kriget och avslöjades först på 1990-talet för den svenska allmänheten.Stay behind-rörelse skulle träda in om det värsta hade hänt - att Sovjetunionen besegrat Sverige i ett krig. Men det främsta målet var naturligtvis att i samarbete med Nato att slå tillbaka ett Sovjetiskt anfall.Sverige valde också att utveckla ett eget flygvapen. Något som inga andra jämförbara länder utanför supermakterna eller stormakterna gjorde vid samma tid. I Sverige planerade vi för egna kärnvapen redan innan vi visste vad kärnvapen var för något.Sverige har en lång tradition av en utvecklad försvarsindustri, ända sedan stormaktstiden vapensmedjor på 1600-talet.
