When Ken researched his Bible School classmate, Melvin Warren, he stumbled across Dr. Curtis' book. It referenced a familiar, legendary press conference. In 1970, at the famed Arch entrance at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Melvin made a speech as the cameras rolled and journalists scribbled notes. He claimed that the school's racism so marred his experience as a student that he tore up his diploma and tossed it into the trash. He made national news. That incident not only drove Ken into a years-long quest to understand the dynamic of racism in his white evangelical church but it also played significantly into the doctoral dissertation of another Moody grad, Dr. Jesse Curtis. Dr. Curtis is now an assistant professor at Valparaiso University. Ken and Jesse compare notes on that momentous event. It prompted Ken's Beached White Male journey. It also contributed to Dr. Curtis' doctoral focus - now a book considered a “must-read” by both Jemar Tisby and Kristin Kobes du Mez. Ken and Jese discuss The Myth of Colorblind Christians: Evangelicals and White Supremacy in the Civil Rights Era. Dr. Curtis covers the history of racism in the white evangelical church going back to the Billy Graham era when Howard Jones became the first African American evangelist on “The Team.” Jesse believes that the Church Growth Movement founded by Donald McGavran contributed to the segregation that was a feature in the explosive growth the church at the turn of the century - including “ethnic” congregations and mega-churches. McGavran's protege, C. Peter Wagner, added fuel that dynamic. In their wide-ranging discussion, they talk about evangelical super-stars like Rick Warren and Bill Hybels as well as champions like Bill Pannel, Tom Skinner and John Perkins. Curtis argues that the notion of “colorblind Christians” is a myth. While he wrote some five years ago, the case is as relevant as ever. Just this week, in his inaugural address, the 47th President stated, “We will forge a society that is colorblind…” His supporters stood in enthusiastic applause. Ken and Jesse agree: this is not progress. SHOW NOTESBecome a Patron | Ken's Substack PageEpisode Number 399 Support the show
Dr. Jesse Curtis shows us how white evangelicals in the 20th century US grew their own institutions and created an evangelical form of whiteness, infusing the politics of colorblindness with sacred fervor. They deployed a Christian brand of colorblindness to protect new investments in whiteness. While black evangelicals used the rhetoric of Christian unity to challenge racism, white evangelicals repurposed this language to silence their black counterparts and retain power. Encore Episode
This episode focuses on the organization True Love Waits and its founding as a highly ambitious campaign to transform the diversity of sexual cultures, expressions, and ethics in the US into a singular ethic based on Christian principles. While doing so, the campaign also contributed to the culture of abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention by sacralizing the practice of victim blaming. Many of us are taught that talking about race and racial identity in the church leads to division. Many of us would, and many still do, identify as “colorblind Christians” who didn't see racial differences as relevant to the church. Our guest today helps us understand that “colorblindness” has tended not to be a virtue, and is especially difficult to defend in a church context that has been shaped by American history. Historian Jesse Curtis has written a new book, The Myth of Colorblind Christians, that challenges the idea that there ever was a truly colorblind tradition of Christianity. Jesse Curtis is an Assistant Professor of History at Valparaiso University. He received his BA in educational ministries from Moody Bible Insitute, his MA in history from Kent State, and his Ph.D. in history from Temple University. He's the author of many peer-reviewed works as well as the book we discuss in today's episode, The Myth of Colorblind Christians: Evangelicals and White Supremacy in the Civil Rights Era. As always we invite you to leave us a rating on your favorite podcast app or send us a comment at podcast@slbrownfoundation.org. On this episode I sat down to discuss my newly published article In Season Training Organization: American Football Available at From the Ground Up Athletic performance.com. The aim of the original article was to inform individuals on how I program a 15 week cycle in season, by utilizing block programming prescription to keep all qualities at a high level. The episode features talking points about the different zones that I utilize (Strength, Strength-speed, Speed-Strength, Peaking or speed) as well as the methods employed for each zone. I discuss the usage of a variety of workout styles such as French contrast, which is where heavy compound lifts are attached to more explosive jump or plyometric auxiliary pieces. Within the episode there is a 15 week skeleton provided in regards to the implementation of blocks based upon the concept of residual training effects. Residual training effects help practitioners insure that they don't let qualities decay beyond repair in a pivotal time such as the in season. Within the episode I share the residual training effects for a variety of qualities and also help to provide rationale on when you would want to arrange training to avoid drop offs. It's a good idea to model training for specific populations, I believe there are certain general qualities that need to be developed in all populations. However, if you want to fully serve your athletes you need to do a needs assessment to understand the characteristics of the game. A need's assessment can take into account a variety of factors. Firstly, it can help inform you on the needs of the sport, such as the dominant energy system utilized within competition. A needs assessment can also help you understand the plyometric nature as well as movement characteristics prevalent within the sport. Within a contact sport such as football it's impossible to avoid all injuries, but understanding the major risk that are associated with each sport can help you leverage your training to account for the issues to the best of your ability. Another important factor shared is the idea of taking into account the effect past training has on future performance. The episode features a flow model based upon the banister model, where individuals can access past training and how it positively or negatively influences a performance test or parameter. With this data in hand we can make better decisions on the needs of future training solutions and predict performance outcomes. All training sessions are going to have some level of positive or negative training effects associated with them the positive training effects tend to stick around longer and are more closely tied to residual effects, where negative effects are shorter and are associated with residual fatigue. It's important that we balance the positive and negative aspects especially in light of future performance. Will residual fatigue accumulated for sessions work itself out of the system to allow for optimal performance? At this point in the conversation I shared a portion of the high low model of Francis and I extend the rationale that it's important to provide windows as well as methods for recovery from high intensity prescriptions. Fatigue is an area that I didn't feature as much in the original write up and I wanted to make sure to share the considerations for fatigue and how to avoid unnecessary fatigue at a pivotal time. Interview with professor, historian, and author Jesse Curtis. Jonny interviews Jesse on his new book “The Myth of Colorblind Christians: Evangelicals and White Supremacy in the Civil Rights Era.” They delve into ideas about how “colorblindness” fails to confront systemic racism as we know it today, how Evangelicalism and social justice are pitted against each other, the history of the Church Growth and racial reconciliation movements, and more. It's a rich interview with tons of history. Also in this episode, the pastors talk back about receiving the gift of God's mercy. Later, a little Spiritual Show and Tell: the new Pedro the Lion album, Hinds' Feet on High Places, and caring for your body with a massage. //Notes// -Interview with Jesse Curtis- Jesse Curtis on twitter: https://twitter.com/jncthehistorian The Myth of Colorblind Christians: https://nyupress.org/9781479809370/the-myth-of-colorblind-christians/ Down with the Honky Christ–Up with the Funky Jesus: https://www.the-nbea.org/down-with-the-honky-christ-up-with-the-funky-jesus/ - Spiritual Show and Tell - Havasu by Pedro the Lion:https://davidbazan.com/music/havasu/ First Drum Set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LTF-gRHJfk Hinds' Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard https://www.amazon.com/Hinds-Feet-Places-Hannah-Hurnard/dp/0842314296 //About this Podcast// Resist and Restore is a podcast by Circle of Hope.
