Did He-Man come out a few decades too late? I liked the movie, but does it have the power? Summer Games Fest hit Friday afternoon with a bang, Xbox brought the lancer, and immediately stepped on a rake. Meanwhile Nintendo finally revealed the game everyone knew about, as the Ocarina of time returns. Plus a new 21 Jump street is coming, but why the skip to 24?

Bello, bello bello bello e ancora bello!
Bzw. besser gesagt MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.
By The Power of Grayskull.....For the first time in thirty-nine years, He-Man and the other Masters of the Universe are back on the big screen! After being sent to Earth as a young boy more than fifteen years ago to hide him from the evil Skeletor (Oscar-winner Jared Leto), Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) has finally found his sword and is returning to his homeland of Eternia to reclaim his legacy. Of course, it gets more complicated than that as not only has much of Eternia (including Castle Grayskull where he's from) been decimated and taken over by Skeletor and his minions but Adam has to figure out HOW to use the sword and become the hero he was always meant to be.....He-Man. ;) Oscar-nominated filmmaker Travis Knight (Kubo & the Two Strings, Coraline, Bumblebee) directs this modernized adaptation of the He-Man legend which originated on a popular animated show in the '80's. Also included in the cast are Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-At-Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, among several others.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week is an absolute monster of an episode. We are diving into the most talked-about releases of the summer—navigating endless liminal spaces, heading to Eternia with He-Man, surviving a demonic road trip, and breaking down the return of the Wayans family to the parody throne. We're kicking off with A24's massive sci-fi psychological horror phenomenon, directed by YouTube sensation Kane Parsons in his feature debut. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as a struggling furniture store owner who stumbles upon a dimension of endless, unsettling liminal spaces hidden right beneath his basement. Fun Flix Fact: The film's massive box office success made Kane Parsons the youngest filmmaker in history to reach number one at the American box office By the power of Grayskull, He-Man is back on the big screen! Directed by Travis Knight, this epic live-action adventure stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, who returns to Eternia to find his home shattered under the rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). Fun Flix Fact: Jared Leto went to extreme lengths to stay in character and intimidate his co-stars. Director Travis Knight revealed that Leto wore his prosthetic skeletal muscle suit off-camera and regularly smeared what appeared to be blood on his face between takes! The parody godfathers are back. The Wayans brothers have returned to the franchise for the first time in 25 years, reuniting with Anna Faris and Regina Hall for a wild take on modern horror hits like Longlegs, Terrifier 3, and even the 2026 biopic Michael. Fun Flix Fact: To maintain absolute secrecy around the surprise cameos, the production filmed multiple alternate endings involving different modern horror antagonists, keeping even the cast guessing until the final cut. Rounding out our main reviews is the supernatural horror flick directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe). Jacob Scipio and Lou Llobell star as a young couple on a road trip who witness a terrible highway accident, only to find themselves hunted by a demonic entity known only as "The Passenger." Fun Flix Fact:The production managed to keep its budget incredibly tight at $15 million, relying on claustrophobic car interiors and intense practical lighting to build relentless tension. To celebrate a quarter-century of raunchy, unapologetic comedy, we are winding the clock back to 2001. We revisit the Wayans brothers' follow-up to the blockbuster original to see how its haunted house spoofs hold up in 2026. Fun Flix Fact: Scary Movie 2 was notoriously rushed into production, hitting theaters just over a year after the first film. Despite the incredibly tight turnaround, it cemented tropes that defined early 2000s comedy cinema. And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Opening Line“Your Nerd Side is going full nostalgia this week — He-Man is back, She-Ra could be next, Supergirl is getting ready to fly, Spider-Noir is bringing Nicolas Cage into live-action Marvel weirdness, The Boys wrapped its final season, Star Wars is going tactical, Indiana Jones is returning to comics, Wolverine is slicing into PlayStation, and we're giving a shoutout to a voice actor gamers know well: Chris Murphy.”1. Masters of the Universe / He-ManThe new live-action Masters of the Universe movie is bringing back He-Man for a new generation. The cast includes Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto. Host angle:This is not just another reboot — this is Hollywood testing whether the big 1980s toy-cartoon universe can work again as a modern fantasy franchise.Quick line:“He-Man is back, Skeletor is back, and Hollywood is once again asking: can the power of Grayskull power a whole new movie universe?”2. She-Ra AngleEven if She-Ra is not the main focus yet, this is the natural fan question: if He-Man works, does She-Ra come next?Host angle:She-Ra may be the smartest expansion point because she has both 1980s nostalgia and a newer fanbase from the Netflix animated version.Quick line:“If Masters of the Universe hits, don't be shocked if fans immediately start chanting for She-Ra — because that may be the real franchise test.”3. Chris Murphy — Voice Actor SegmentChris Murphy is an American voice actor, writer, and producer. For gamers, he is best known as the voice of Murray in the Sly Cooper video game series. Behind The Voice Actors also lists him as Murray, and Streamily promotes him as “the voice of the amazing Murray from Sly Cooper.” Important clarification:This is not Senator Chris Murphy. This is Chris Murphy the voice actor, connected to PlayStation-era gaming nostalgia.Host angle:Murray was the big-hearted, funny muscle of the Sly Cooper crew. Chris Murphy helped make that character memorable for a whole generation of PlayStation fans.Quick line:“And a quick shoutout for gamers: Chris Murphy, the voice of Murray from Sly Cooper, is one of those actors whose voice lives rent-free in the heads of PlayStation kids everywhere.”4. SupergirlSupergirl is heading toward its June 26, 2026 theatrical release, with Milly Alcock starring as Kara Zor-El. The movie is inspired by the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, and recent coverage says the final trailer is pushing big space adventure, action, and Krypto energy. Host angle:This is DC trying to prove the new universe is bigger than just Superman and Batman.Quick line:“Supergirl is not just Superman's cousin anymore — DC is putting her front and center, and the question is whether fans are ready for Kara to carry the cape.”5. Spider-NoirSpider-Noir stars Nicolas Cage in a live-action noir-style Spider-Man story. Reuters reported that the series blends superhero storytelling with classic film noir and can be watched in black-and-white or color. Host angle:This is one of the strangest and coolest Marvel-adjacent projects because it is not trying to look like every other superhero show.Quick line:“Nicolas Cage as a 1930s noir Spider-Man? That is either crazy or brilliant — and honestly, with Cage, it might be both.”
By The power of Grayskull i have The power! Noniin sitten oli aika astua Eterniaan ja arvostelussa uusi He-Man elokuva Masters of the Universe, joka tuli juuri ensi-iltaan. Tehosteet? Jne. Jne. Näihin vastauksia arvostelussa. Oletko nähnyt tämän? Mitä mieltä? Oletko iso MOTU fani? Tai oletko nähnyt sen Lungrenin leffan?
By the power of Grayskull, the listeners have spoken! For our June new release review, the members of CinemaShock+ have chosen MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, the major live-action revival of He-Man and the forces of Eternia. Starring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, Idris Elba, and Jared Leto, the film represents Mattel's most significant theatrical push since BARBIE took over the world three years ago. We'll be taking a trek through the hyper-stylized world built by director Travis Knight, evaluating how it handles decades of lore, and discussing our childhood nostalgia for Eternia stands up against modern studio tropes. We discuss the balancing act between serving genuine 80s nostalgia and appealing to an entirely new audience, breaking down whether this block of corporate intellectual property holds any genuine artistic merit. As a reminder, members of CinemaShock+ have the voting power to choose what New Release we review each month, so if you want to help decide what July's bonus episode will be, head to cinemashock.net/plus to become a member today!

For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Giovanni Lago, and Brendan Hodges join me to review and discuss "Masters Of The Universe" starring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Kristen Wiig, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba. Directed by Travis Knight and based on the Mattel media franchise, it is the second live-action film adaptation after the 1987 film. After being in development for many years, this giant-sized IP has finally made its way to movie theater screens from Amazon MGM Studios, rather than streaming. But do audiences in 2026 still care about He-Man, Skeletor, Cringer, and many of the other iconic characters who are resurfacing in this reboot? Jueves de Cultura Geek Live! Hoy hablamos de Masters Of The Universe, El Power Suit de Lex Luthor para Man of Tomorrow, Backrooms, Amazing Digital Circus, Obsession y mucho mas!
With movies like “Once,” “Begin Again” and “Sing Street,” Irish filmmaker John Carney has found a way to make movie musicals relevant for contemporary audiences. His latest effort is "Power Ballad." Kansas City's Paul Rudd stars alongside Nick Jonas in the story of a struggling wedding singer who bonds with a pop star. When the former boy band member steals a song from his friend, things get dicey. Rudd is as good as he's been in years, and Jonas is solid in a role tailor made for him. “Power Ballad” is a rousing crowd-pleaser that's filled with catchy music. If you are familiar with the phrase, "By the power of Grayskull," then the clunky action fantasy "Masters of the Universe" might be nostalgic for you...but that's really all it's got going for it. In this update of the 80s adventure cartoons based on the line of Mattel toys, Nicholas Galitzine plays an annoyingly uncertain He-Man, Jered Leto provides the petulant voice of Skeletor and Idris Elba is wasted as a washed-up warrior. The movie's tongue-in-cheek approach never works. “Masters of the Universe” lacks the power. The Wayans Brothers are back with yet another ultra raunchy horror movie parody. Despite its title, "Scary Movie" is actually “Scary Movie 6,” the latest installment in the franchise that started 26 years ago. It reunites many of the movies' familiar cast members including Marlon and Shawn Wayans and a few dozen other Wayans, Regina Hall and Anna Faris. Sadly, the Wayans have officially run out of ideas for “Scary Movie” and try to fill the gap with repetitive and aggressively offensive material. Now that's scary.

Thats a whole lot of Podcasting… For this momentous milestone we are doing what we do best: diving headlong in and compounding some Elements of Awesome into something great: this is us mixing in a half tonne of “‘80s nostalgia” a few cups of “sweet ass toy-line”and then filtering it through the lens of “Summer blockbuster movie” with just a dash of “music by Queen”! Synopsis After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia, where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe. https://youtu.be/4kmireaj30c A huge shout-out to the heroic warriors (and the evil forces of Skeletor) who join in with our moderated live-chat during the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST. By the power of Grayskull, we made a huge mistake. This week on Be Kind Rewind, Dave, Cody, & Paul Walcher revisit 1987's Masters of the Universe — the flop that took down an entire movie studio. We dig into what holds up (Frank Langella performing Shakespeare under a skull mask, Dolph Lundgren as a walking action figure, James Tolkan from Back to the Future as a hardboiled detective who somehow ends up an honorary Master of the Universe), what doesn't (no Battle Cat, no Orko, no Prince Adam, no real Eternia), and the bonkers behind-the-scenes story including the studio running out of money three days before filming wrapped, a planned sequel that became Cyborg with Jean-Claude Van Damme, and a marketing pitch that simply said "make it Star Wars but He-Man." We also Muppetize the movie, find one of the most surprising Pastor's Corner moments hiding in a bad movie ever, and pick our winners and losers. Plus: the debut of Hot Take Cody as our new opener, a brand new Movie Game, and a bonus round on the top five highest-grossing toy movies of all time.

Join us as we travel back to Eternia—and suburban Earth—to revisit the 1987 cult classic Masters of the Universe, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as the iconic Skeletor. Based on the wildly popular Mattel toy line and animated series, this ambitious live-action adaptation brought swords, sorcery, laser blasters, and Castle Grayskull to the big screen in a way only the 1980s could. In this episode, we discuss the film's journey from toy shelves to theaters, its memorable cast—including a young Courteney Cox—and why this once-maligned box-office disappointment has grown into a beloved cult favorite over the decades. We also examine the movie's departures from the source material, its production challenges, and the performance that many fans still consider the film's greatest strength: Langella's unforgettable Skeletor.Whether you're a lifelong Master of the Universe or preparing for the franchise's big-screen return, grab your Power Sword and join us for a nostalgic look back at one of the most fascinating comic and toy adaptations of the 1980s. Holly hopes to wrestle the power of Grayskull from Skeletor in Masters of the Universe (1987, re-watch), with Dolph Lundgren as the live action version of Mattel's He-Man action figure, teaming up with Courtney Cox to save the Earth from Frank Langella's deliciously hammy villain in this Cannon Films classic. Listen as we get nostalgic for after-school cartoons, toy collecting, mullets, magic and mayhem on this week's exciting episode! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week, we review Masters of the Universe (1987), Gary Goddard's sci-fi fantasy cult classic that blasts He-Man from Eternia straight into suburban Earth. Dolph Lundgren stars as the mighty He-Man, squaring off against Frank Langella's gloriously theatrical Skeletor in a battle for the cosmic key — and the fate of the universe. With its wild mix of swords, lasers, synth scores, and fish-out-of-water hijinks, this Cannon Films production reimagines the beloved Mattel toy line with a decidedly '80s flair. Is it By the Power of Grayskull or just a powerfully bad idea? We're still on the road to Grayskull as we inch closer to the release of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie! And we're still covering Medieval movies and this week we look at The Messenger about Joan of Arc. Less a passion project and more a get his wife a job project, Luc Besson fired the first director of this project to hire his wife, Milla Jovovich in the lead role. Did it work? Find out as we cover The Messenger.
In this episode of Missing Frames, Shawn and returning guest John Mills tackle one of the most gloriously baffling cult films of the 1980s: Masters of the Universe.Technically speaking? It's not a good movie.Emotionally speaking? They kind of love it anyway.Together, Shawn and John dive deep into the strange, earnest, deeply endearing world of Cannon Films' live-action adaptation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and a gloriously committed Frank Langella as Skeletor. Along the way, they unpack the film's bizarre production history, its unmistakable “Cannon Films energy,” and why the movie's sincerity and lack of cynicism make it weirdly lovable. They also discuss that odd moment when a "bad" movie ends up being far more endearing and memorable than a competent one.By the Power of Grayskull, this one has the power.
Masters of the Universe (1987) Director: Gary Goddard Cast: Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Meg Foster, Billy BartyBy the power of Grayskull — and a budget that clearly ran out before they could build a decent set — we're diving headfirst into the gloriously broken 1987 Cannon Films fever dream that is Masters of the Universe. This week, John and Sean strap on their cosmic keys, dust off their He-Man nostalgia (well, Sean's nostalgia — John was busy being a Ghostbusters kid), and try to figure out what the hell they just watched. Oh, and we also talk about Hulk Hogan's new Netflix documentary, Real American, because apparently two massively jacked, possibly fictional characters for one episode wasn't enough. In this episode, we discuss:He-Mansplaining: A Franchise Left Stranded on Earth — Sean breaks down why this movie is basically unwatchable if you didn't grow up playing with Snake Mountain, and actively insulting if you did. No Prince Adam, no Battle Cat, no context — just Dolph Lundgren looking absolutely shredded and wandering around a deserted California town.Canon Fodder: How Golan-Globus Torched Their Own Studio — The behind-the-scenes disaster is almost more entertaining than the film itself. Budget cuts, three days of filming halted because they literally ran out of money, sets being torn down mid-shoot, and props that got recycled into Jean-Claude Van Damme's Cyborg. This is the beautiful chaos of late-80s Cannon Films in full self-destruction mode. The Puff Piece Problem: Hulk Hogan's WWE-Laundered Legacy — The guys dig into Netflix's Hulk Hogan: Real American and call out exactly what it is — a carefully sanitized, WWE-produced hagiography that glosses over the steroids, the racial slurs, the sex tape, and basically anything that would make Terry Bollea look like a human being with flaws. The first three episodes slap. The fourth one chickens out.Skeletor Deserved Better (And So Did We) — Frank Langella shows up, chews every piece of scenery in sight, and delivers the only performance worth watching in this entire movie. James Tolkan's accented cop is deeply out of place and completely hilarious. And poor Billy Barty is buried under pounds of prosthetics as Gwildor, a character so annoying he makes Jar Jar Binks look understated. We Also Talked About:Hulk Hogan: Real American (Netflix, 2026) — A four-episode WWE-produced docuseries covering Hogan's rise from fat kid playing bass in a band to the most recognizable figure in wrestling history. Great archival footage, Linda Hogan telling it surprisingly straight, Jesse Ventura being selectively complimentary, and Donald Trump somehow finding time in his schedule to appear on camera. The Bubba the Love Sponge/racial slur situation? Barely mentioned. The Many Lies of Hulk Hogan (Part 1) (Youtube)The Many Lies of Hulk Hogan (Part 2) (Youtube)I Come in Peace (1990, Dolph Lundgren) — Referenced as a recent pod pick, because apparently the guys can't get enough of Dolph.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week.
