Today's podcast features sports performance coaches Sheldon Dunlap and Jeff Howser. Sheldon Dunlap is currently serving as a Strength & Conditioning Specialist with MARSOC (Marine Special Operations Command). Previously, he has worked at the collegiate level coaching a wide variety of sports at UC Davis and Duke University. Jeff Howser is a speed and performance coach with strong roots in track and field.  He spent 20 seasons as Duke's speed and conditioning coach and has trained a variety of team sports and high-level track and field athletes.  Jeff was a world bronze medalist in the 110m high hurdles and a multi-time ACC champion. When you look at all of the possible training variations out there today in strength and athletic performance, you realize that a great majority of our modern training has been done in some way, shape, or form, many decades ago.  One method out there that is more recent in nature is partial range, oscillatory repetition methods with barbells for the sake of improving athletic speed and power. Sheldon appeared way back on podcast #131 speaking on his integration of oscillating reps, into the Triphasic system pioneered by Cal Dietz.  Sheldon originally learned the oscillating method from Jeff Howser (who also learned it from Cal's influence). On episode 35 I sat down with Chris Korfist, Co founder of track football consortium and RPR. Chris is well known for speed training and sprints and that's exactly what a good portion of todays conversation centers around. We begin the conversation by discussing how Coach Korfist can best identify drivers in his athletes and how he utilizes that to examine and justify the implementation of training. Chris first discusses how he can utilize RPR to help inform him about movement competencies and potential compensatory patterns. We also discuss how video analysis can help to inform about the drivers and movement preferences of athletes. Coach Korfist discusses some of the more common movement flaws that he encounters with athletes and the negative ramifications for less than optimal movement choices. Coach korfist shares that many times he encounters runners that are pushers or quad dominant. He shares how stiff legged runs or prime times are a good option to teach athletes how to properly utilize their hamstrings and find proper foot placement. We also discuss the proper posture for stiff legged runs and why we may encounter athletes with excessive lean. Coach Korfist shares programming considerations based on profile are they muscle bound or are they more elastic in nature. If athletes are more muscle bound one of the things that stands out immediately is that they will need training that helps provide stiffness in order to get the system primed and ready to go. Indicators such as vertical jump, ankle rocker capabilities or ankle rocker hops help to inform programming needs for elastic athletes. We turn our conversation to weight room practices and discuss the best manner to progress athletes to keep speed the primary consideration. Coach Korfist shares some of his general strength methods and his rationale with Triphasic. He also shares how to keep athletes reflexive and springy when training strength movements. Coach Korfist shares a good point that athletic movement do not fit the generally profile of powerlifting or oly lifting. Greasing the groove is to the detriment of athletic development for those that wish to move in an athletic and dynamic manner. We turn our attention to the 1080 and coach Korfist shares how he starts his athletes on overspeed training. He discusses some of his rationale for starting athletes on overspeed early, it helps examine how they respond to moving fast, is there fear? Can they turn over properly. Coach Korfist also likes to use mini hurdles to encourage certain turn over patterns. Coach Korfist utilizes a variety of methods depending on the desired adaptation. Coach Korfist discusses how he utilizes the power of competition and has a leader board to help gamify and push athletes when doing resisted sprints. We also discuss some of the possible benefits of utilizing the 1080 for agilities as well as sporting practices. We end the conversation by discussing the ideas behind his article Too many notes that coach Korfist published a while back on Simplifaster. This article stood out in stark contrast to how I typically view Coach Korfist. I see coach Korfist as being an experimenter as well as a trainer that is able to provide individualized training means. Coach Korfist is all of the things mentioned earlier, however, he also likes to keep it simple and realizes like his article states" sometimes its what you don't play. Matt Van Dyke joins Rob on this week's Pacey Performance Podcast. As the Director of Sports Science for the Houston Texans, Matt is responsible for the management of training loads and other performance aspects implemented to each individual athlete in order to maximise performance and readiness. Prior to this, Matt has worked at the University of Texas and University of Denver, designing and implementing speed, strength, conditioning, and mobility training programs for men's lacrosse, alpine ski, baseball, tennis, swimming and track and field. On this episode I sat down with Cal Dietz, strength and conditioning coach at the University of Minnesota as well as author of Triphasic Training. I've mentioned many different aspects of Triphasic training on this podcast with other guest on the podcast and on today's episode Cal provides rationale for certain points within his preparatory methods. We start by discussing one of Cal's emphasis the floating heel and his rationale for utilizing different foot positions throughout prep. We discuss how foot placement may different between GPP and specific phases, as well as the idea behind the spring ankle model. Cal discusses the different levels of spring ankle and how to implement them into training, and why it is extremely important that athletes have strong feet and lower legs. Cal discusses the difference between implementing Triphasic in a bilateral and unilateral manner and how he deals with the negative feedback derived from bilateral movements. I was totally blown away a few months ago when Cal posted his video on performance cycling and I've referenced it on multiple occasions on the show. Cal discusses how he found the issue that can be created through facilitating workouts in a more traditional manner and the negative impact that can occur due to this. Triphasic is based around Block periodization, so naturally Cal discusses how block methods differ from mixed methods and presents reasoning for programming in a block system. I was interested to see what Cal's suggestions would be for speed and agility prep during the concentrated eccentric and isometric blocks within Triphasic, so Cal discusses a sensible manner to progress speed work during those concentrated strength blocks. We end the discussion by talking about the Goat Drill and how Cal stacks this agility as a natural mechanism for rest between sprints and to optimize skill uptake and learning processes. On Episode 21 I sit down with Troy Mchugh of TMAthleticDevelopment to discuss a variety of topics mostly centered around the neurological approach to training, speed development, and Triphasic Methodologies. We start our conversation with one of the guiding Principles of Troy's development system Neurological considerations. This naturally steers the conversation to how he effectively utilizes RPR to help prepare athletes for the rigors of training and their sport. One of the things that stuck out to me early on is how Troy elaborated the two variables that he is constantly monitoring, these are if the training puts athletes into a sympathetic or parasympathetic state. Troy elaborates on why this is such a major consideration in his examination of programming and preparation. We detail other recovery methods that he utilizes to make sure his athletes stay, happy, healthy, and fast. We spend a good bit of time talking about the foot and ankle methods that he utilizes and Troy talks about two major pieces of equipment that he utilizes to build not only the foot and ankle complex but also potentiate speed. The K box and the run rocket are two important pieces of equipment in Troy's preparatory methods. Troy discusses his unique approach to potentiation cluster, I believe he also refers to them as speed clusters where he utilizes the run rocket in a manner similar to Dietz's potentiation clusters. Troy also talks about the rationale behind utilizing this machine and how to take into account force velocity decrements to best load the exercise. We close out the conversation by talking about the general or globalized approaches that he takes in working with such a wide profile of athletes ranging from professionals, to collegiate athletes, all the way down to adolescents. A few factors flow throughout the conversation, one is viewing the body through a neurological lens and utilizing that to help drive home the most important factor the facilitation of max Velocity sprinting. Troy also provides a unique perspective on some of the Triphasic training methodologies that many are familiar with. Jake Tuura, Assistant Strength & Conditioning coach at Youngstown State University and mastermind behind jackedathlete.com, joins the show today to discuss jumper’s knee, power/force development, his time at Minnesota under Cal Dietz, coach-athlete relationships, having fun, vertical jump protocols, isometrics, tendons, and a whole lot more. Jake found his way to the weightroom through sports before his senior year in high school. When Jake went to college he had intentions of playing basketball, but was unable to play due to ongoing patellar tendinopathy (“jumper's knee”). Throughout this time he still tried various jump programs, but still ended up with the same patellar tendinopathy. Out of frustration, he stopped trying to play basketball and began to gravitate more towards lifting weights and trying to solve the problem of his jumper’s knee. Jake did his master’s degree internship under Cal Dietz at Minnesota, learning the ins and outs of Triphasic training. He then went to Minnesota Duluth and now is the Assistant Strength & Conditioning coach at Youngstown State University in Ohio. We kick it off discussing the disconnect between coaches and athletes and their view of the weightroom. Strength coaches tend to love all things lifting and only view the world through that lens, but athletes typically only love to play their sport and view strength and conditioning as a means to an end. Jake has learned to take a more realistic view on this and has found ways to build adherence and buy-in to the process. One example was changing the way he warmed athletes up. Rather than watching athletes mindlessly slog through a standard dynamic warm up, he found the use of games such as Spikeball to not only be more engaging, but better at increasing overall readiness. At the end of the day, Jake is always looking for ways to increase the collective buy-in of his athletes and make the training process enjoyable for them as opposed to following a more rigid model.  Next we discuss Jake’s time working under Cal Dietz and the Triphasic training model. First and foremost, Cal Dietz has a fantastic environment to maximize the benefits of the model, including a history of phenomenal professional athletes and a weight room set up perfectly for implementation. Jake’s initial exposure was completely foreign to him, but after being able to go through with the internship and ask a lot of questions, he wanted to implement it on his own. He quickly learned that implementation would be very difficult if you don’t have the facilities to do so, buy in from other coaches, or athletes with very different needs and personalities than one another. Jake had a similar experience with RPR, running into issues with athletes just going through the motions.  A big theme during this discussion is that the biggest rock in training athletes is buy-in, not only from a results standpoint, but in maintaining a health coach-client relationship so that their sports performance continues to improve. He learned how to mold his training to the athlete, not the other way round. Many of these lessons were the result of trial and error and making a lot of mistakes, which Kyle makes the point that those mistakes are necessary for growth and self discovery. Jake emphasizes that it was through failure and keeping an open mind that allowed him to progress to the point where he is now.  This leads us into coach-athlete relationships, and how the main goal has always been to improve performance, not establish relationships. Coaches need to keep the main goal at the center of their attention, which is getting results. Jake is realistic about relationship expectations, especially with such a large number of athletes coming through the door. Carmen is a practical coach who is well versed in the “art” of coaching, and particularly the art of doing so at a small University where the coach-athlete ratio is very small and the level of incoming athletes from a physical perspective demands creative solutions to preparation. A big reason I wanted to get Carmen on the show was the nature of his articles, being a mixture of experience intelligence and practicality.  Throughout this podcast, I enjoy talking about a diverse array of training methods.  It is always enjoyable to do episodes where we see how these training means are filtered into a training package, and in this case, 4-year training at a Division 3 school. Bryan started his career at the University of Missouri Department of Physical Therapy in 2012. Before this, he served as a strength & conditioning coach at the University of Missouri since 2004, and before that at Arizona State University, University of Tulsa, and Missouri State University. Mann is internationally renowned for his work in autoregulation of strength training, specifically with Velocity Based Training and the Autoregulatory Progressive Resistance Exercise method (APRE). Mann splits his time between teaching, researching in sports performance enhancement, working as the Research Director for the Human Performance Institute, and working as the Director for Performance Research with the Department of Athletics. This week’s guest is Matt Van Dyke.  Matt is the associate director of sports performance at the University of Denver and the author of “Triphasic Lacrosse Training Manual”, along with Cal Dietz. Matt is the youngest coach I’ve had on the podcast so far at age 27, but in his short time in the field, he is already making a big impact, having written 2 books (Triphasic manual for high school and Triphasic Lacrosse), and having been mentored under some of the great strength coaches of our time. About a month ago, Matt showed me his ideas on training proper glute function in athletes that has slashed soft-tissue injury rates, and I was completely blown away.  I’ve been familiar with the use of neuromuscular resetting for the glutes (Be Activated/RPR/MAT/NKT), as well as the idea of various exercises to aid in motor patterning, but I was really impressed by how Matt had formed a hierarchy to this model, starting with structural issues and working down the line (you can read about the full sequence with all related exercises in the Triphasic Lacrosse manual). Seeing it all in place, it made a lot of sense to me based on everything I’ve seen in my past experience, and knew that this work was going to change how coaches thought about glute training and function for a long time. At the University of Denver, Matt works heavily with lacrosse, alpine ski, volleyball, tennis and swimming.  His prior experience included 6 months at the University of Minnesota working under Cal Dietz, as well as working at St. Cloud State, and interning at Iowa State. Dietz is also a member of the Gender Equity Committee at the University of Minnesota and currently represents the University as a member of the Big Ten committee to develop performance enhancing policy for anabolic and ergogenic aids.During his time at the university, Dietz has given numerous lectures around the country, as well as publish several scientific articles and dozens articles on training. Most recently, Dietz co-authored the the top selling book, Triphasic Training: A systematic approach to elite speed and explosive strength performance.Prior to returning to Minnesota, Dietz was the strength coordinator at The University of Findlay, overseeing 26 men's and women's sports, in addition to coordinating the university's fitness center, coaching the offensive line with the football program and teaching strength and conditioning classes. He is no stranger to Minnesota athletics after serving as a graduate assistant strength coach while pursuing his graduate degree. During this time Dietz was the first assistant to football and assisted with a Majority of Olympic Sports.The Shelby, Ohio, native earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Findlay in 1996 and his master's degree from Minnesota in kinesiology in May, 2000. During his athletic career at the University of Findlay Dietz won three National team championships, two in football and one in wrestling. Highlights of his career was earning 2 All-American honors in Football and winning the NAIA National Duals MVP in wrestling. In 1995 he received the NAIA College Sports Magazine Athlete of the year and was inducted into the University's of Findlay's Hall of Fame in 2005.Dietz married Karyn Bye, a member of the U.S. Olympic Women's Hockey Team which captured the gold medal in 1998 and silver medal in 2002. The couple resides in Hudson, Wis., with their daughter, Tatum Lynn Born in May 2003 and Brody Michael born July 2005.
